Subject-verb Agreement Rules
You learnt about subject-verb agreement in an earlier lesson.
Do you remember the rules?
Rule No 1: In a sentence where the simple present tense is used,
A singular (one) noun needs a singular verb.
e.g. The spider crawls around the web.
A plural (many) noun needs a plural verb.
e.g. The spiders crawl around the web.
Rule No 2: When using the singular form of the verb, you need to add
‘s’, or ‘es’, or ‘ies’ to the verb.
E.g.
1. They walk. He walks.
2. The athletes catch the ball. The athlete catches the ball.

Two Nouns in a Sentence
Look at the sentence: The boy with the puppies smile/smiles at his mother.
Do we use the singular verb smiles or the plural verb smile?
Ask yourself who is doing the action: the boy or the puppies?
The answer is the boy.
Since the boy is a singular noun, we use the singular verb smiles.
The boy with the puppies smiles at his mother.

Simple Past Tense
We use past tense to talk about something that has happened in the past.
