The Confident Young Octopus

Deep in the ocean lived an octopus. It lived 5
alone but it was confident that it could survive. It understood how to
take care of itself. Sometimes, creatures like sharks tried to eat it,
but the octopus knew many tricks to get away safely.

Once, the octopus swam into a deep, rocky area in the ocean. It realised that no
other creature was there, so it swam around happily and sang to itself. Suddenly, a
shark appeared. The octopus had neither teeth nor sharp claws to protect itself. It
hardly fought with other creatures. What could it do?

The octopus then thought of a clever trick. It raced to the bottom of

the sea and buried itself in the sand. The shark came by and was 10

confused: where was the octopus? In fact, the octopus lay in the

sand with two tentacles waving above. Its body changed colour to

match that of its surroundings. The two tentacles changed colour

and they looked like sea snakes! The shark was disappointed and

swam away. 15
The octopus started swimming around again. Just then, it saw a diver swimming

towards it. The diver held a bright light. This time, the octopus hid among the rocks.

The octopus didn’t have a backbone, so it could squeeze easily between the rocks.

When the diver came close, the octopus suddenly shot a cloud of black ink at him.

The diver was caught by surprise and dropped his light. The octopus burst out from 20

among the rocks and swam away so fast that the diver could not follow it.

The octopus chuckled to itself, “If I have faith in myself, they can’t catch me!” Just 25
then, a large school of fish came by. There were no rocks nearby, so the octopus 30
did something else: it broke off one of its arms! The arm changed colour and
squirmed around in the water. All the fish thought it was going to attack them and
they disappeared immediately.

The octopus dug around in the sand looking for small crabs for dinner. It was lucky –
there were seven of them! As it ate the crabs, the octopus thought, “They found me
easily today. I won because I have great belief in my power to stay alive. But
tomorrow I’d better look for a safer hiding place!”
