Activity 1 – Hands-on Activity: Invent a New Animal Species

Materials Needed:
• Pencil
• Pen
• Coloured Pencils

Instructions

In this exercise, you will invent a new animal species.

1. Decide what type of animal it will be – a mammal, bird, insect, reptile or
amphibian. Your animal has to have the same characteristics as the
other animals in this group, so if it is a mammal it will need to have fur
and give birth to live young. If it is an insect it has three body parts.

2. Add on more characteristics and feel free to give it any type of colour,
number of legs, or features as long as it retains similarities with other
animals in its group.

3. Write down what it eats, where it lives, how it moves and how it
reproduces.

4. Present the animal to your teacher and describe it to your classmates.
Explain whether it is a mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or insect and
what characteristics it has in common with other animals in that group.

1. Jennifer and Ginny made the following statements about an animal shown
below.

Jennifer: The snake belongs to the amphibian group.
Ginny: No, you are wrong.

Why did Ginny disagree with Jennifer?

(1) The snake gives birth to its young while amphibians lay eggs.
(2) The snake can only live on land while amphibians only live in water.
(3) The snake has a dry and scaly skin while amphibians have moist skin.
(4) The snake can live on land and water while amphibians only live in

water.
