Presented by
Dear Changemakers,
Thank you for supporting our mission and for saying yes to saving
babies with us. In the 13-year history of our nonprofit organization,
we have never been on the cusp of something so big before. Since
we last gathered in this ballroom in 2019, we have expanded into
our 16th state, initiated our first Congressional stillbirth prevention
legislation, and welcomed our 56th Count the Kicks Ambassador.
We are in a race to prevent every preventable stillbirth we can.
Every expectant parent deserves critical Count the Kicks education
during pregnancy so their baby has the best chance of arriving
healthy. This early warning system WORKS. Last year alone, we
heard from 22 families who said their baby’s life was saved due to
our program. Since Count the Kicks launched in Iowa in 2008, we
have helped prevent preventable stillbirths in 27 states and three
countries — collecting nearly 100 save stories so far.
It all started with five Iowa women and the loss of their beautiful
daughters Madeline, Grace, Jayden, Emma Kate and Grace. It
continues with all of you. Our collective legacy is huge — Iowa
reached a 32 percent stillbirth rate reduction in the first decade
of Count the Kicks while the rest of the country remained relatively
stagnant. Within that we’ve seen a 39 percent stillbirth rate
reduction among Black women. This translates to hundreds of
Iowa babies saved.
While we celebrate this success, we know our work is not over.
Public health officials who review causes of stillbirth across the
country report that 55 percent of expectant parents who endured
the loss of a baby noticed a change in their baby’s movements —
but no one ever told them that this change was an urgent red flag
or that they needed to alert their doctor. They find out only after
their baby is gone.
Babies can’t wait. Families can’t
wait. That is why your support
today means everything
— and will make all the
difference for someone
out there. We can’t wait
to show you the impact
of your support.

28 WEEKS?
IT’S TIME TO START
COUNTING!
OUR CAMPAIGN
The Count the Kicks campaign teaches expectant parents the method for
and importance of counting their baby’s kicks daily in the third trimester
of pregnancy. Kick counting is the practice of keeping a daily record of
fetal movements during the third trimester — including kicks, jabs, rolls
and punches.
According to the CDC, stillbirth still occurs in 1 out of every 169
pregnancies in the U.S. Research shows a change in a baby’s movement
is the first or sometimes only indication a baby may be in distress and
needs to be checked by a healthcare provider.
When expectant parents use the Count the Kicks app to track their baby’s
movements they will get to know what is normal for their baby. They will
also have data to share with their provider if they notice a change, which
may reduce the risk of stillbirth. The goal of this evidence-based public
health campaign is to prevent preventable stillbirths and improve the
chances of a healthy birth outcome for mom and baby.
APP FEATURES
The hallmark tool of our campaign is the FREE Count the Kicks app, which
is available in the iOS and Google Play app stores. The Count the Kicks
app is available in 14 languages, and has been downloaded more than
180,000 times in all 50 states and more than 140 other countries.
The Count the Kicks app is an easy way for expectant parents to monitor
their baby’s well-being in addition to regular prenatal visits. It’s also a
great way for expectant parents to bond with their baby.

Since the beginning of Count the Kicks, there has been a rally cry
that “Every Kick Counts” — starting with early radio PSAs of football
celebrities such as Kirk Ferentz and Nate Kaeding. One of the PSAs,
which first aired in October 2007, is even credited with saving the first
Count the Kicks baby, Danny McCune of South Dakota. The metaphors
between football kicking and baby kicking are endless, stealing headlines
last fall with Iowa Hawkeye punter Tory Taylor’s, “Punting is Winning”
T-shirt popularity, and now, with the launch of Every Kick Counts.
Bragging Rights Just Got an Upgrade
Every Kick Counts is a philanthropic opportunity for athletes to turn their
performance on the field into a win for their community. Launched in
collaboration with former University of Iowa consensus All-American
placekicker, Keith Duncan, kickers and punters from across the country
will join together this fall to raise funds for Count the Kicks.
How It Works
Athletes who sign up support Count the Kicks by collecting pledges and
sponsorships for every score, punt, kick or success they have in their
game. Athletes see their performance in their sport translated into
monetary support for a life-saving cause.
Kick for a Cause
Athletes who participate will gain exposure for their team and their
school. They also have the opportunity to vie for scholarships, beef up
their college resumes and earn rewards for participating in challenges
throughout the season. Participants also demonstrate their commitment
to charitable giving as a student athlete.
If you know of an athlete who is interested in turning their stats on the field
into a win for their community, invite them to participate in the Every Kick
Counts campaign. Interested participants at all levels can sign up today
at EveryKickCounts.com.
Pledge Your Support
Not an athlete? We invite you to pledge your support to one! You can
make pledges based on the points your athlete scores, yards they kick or
just make a flat donation. This is a great way for family, friends and fans
to show your athlete, and Every Kick Counts, your support.

WHERE DOES YOUR
DONATION GO?
Through our early warning system, Count the Kicks, we have a community
of moms who are in tune with their bodies and their babies. These
expectant parents are advocates for their children before they are even
born, and our app empowers them to let their providers know when
something feels off.
When you give to our mission, you become a part of the movement to
make kick counting a common practice for ALL expectant parents in the
third trimester of pregnancy. Together we are sparking systemic change
and saving lives. Your support goes directly to funding our outreach and
advocacy for stillbirth prevention programs like Count the Kicks.
A donation of $500 could allow us to host an information booth at
a local baby fair, or partner with a community organization to host a
webinar series to educate expectant parents.
A donation of $250 could allow us to reach expectant parents in
marginalized communities with life-saving information about
kick counting.
A donation of $100 could fill the triage unit of a birthing hospital with
Count the Kicks educational materials.
A donation of $50 could provide kick counting bracelets to 15 moms who
don’t have access to our free mobile app.
A donation of $25 could fill an entire OBGYN office with Count the Kicks
educational materials.
Every amount matters. Your contribution will help save babies, improve
birth outcomes and support our work to make stillbirth a maternal
healthy tragedy of the past. We are grateful for your presence at our
luncheon today and for your gift. We are a platinum-rated nonprofit
on Guidestar.

OUR VISION
Our Vision
We are in a rush to save every baby from preventable stillbirth — and
we want to get to the point that kick counting is common practice for all
expectant parents in the third trimester of pregnancy.
How We Achieve It
In the past six months we have seen not only one, but two pieces of
stillbirth prevention legislation introduced in Congress. Last month,
the Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act of 2022 was
introduced in both houses of Congress. Our organization initiated this
legislation with Rep. Alma Adams (D- North Carolina) and we are
grateful to Iowa Congresswomen Ashley Hinson and Cindy Axne for
co-sponsoring the bill in the House. In the Senate, the bill is being led by
Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and Senator Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana).
The House and Senate companion legislation would add stillbirth and
stillbirth prevention to Title V of the Social Security Act — something
that has been lacking since the introduction of Title V back in 1935. Our
organization co-hosted its first Congressional Briefing on stillbirth in
December related to the passing of the SHINE for Autumn Act — a bill
that would fund more research on the causes of stillbirth.
These important pieces of stillbirth prevention legislation are a powerful
way to bring stillbirth out of the shadows and to improve birth outcomes
for thousands of families in the U.S. The time to support this legislation
is now. We encourage our supporters to contact their Congressional
representatives and ask them to support these bills. You can share your
support at bit.ly/StillbirthPreventionAct.
Turning Our Vision Into a Reality
We have a bold vision to save 7,500 babies every year in the U.S. To do
that, we must expand Count the Kicks to all 50 states. The number of
state partnerships has doubled in the last two years, and our campaign is
currently launched and fully funded in 16 states. With several more states
expected to launch later this year, our vision is becoming a reality one
state at a time. Your support helps us grow our reach and build the case
to expand to states that don’t yet have Count the Kicks.
