Acknowledging the past, focusing on the present, and planning for the future are
all tenants of true empowerment. It was James Baldwin who wrote “If you know
whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” In
this one hour discussion, we will look at African American history in the context of
American history. We will discuss the tremendous opportunities we have before
us today in focusing on leadership; and will think intentionally about planning for
the future here at Allstate. All the while countenancing the fact that no one goes
it alone; we all stand on the shoulders of those before us, and through reciprocity
and leadership, will give back by lending our shoulders to others.

Collaboration Across Allstate, Thursday, February 15, 1:00 - 1:55 p.m. Allstate Cafeteria Bldg 103
For the first time in history, four generations are in the workplace at the same time creating a new set of
challenges in communication and collaboration across teams, departments, and organizations: (a) traditional
methods of how things got done are being challenged; (b) process is still very important, however, the
human factor (people’s emotions, reactions, and interpretations) is having a much greater impact on project
success; and (c) focusing on similarities and commonalities instead of being stifled by differences, is driving
greater collaboration. In this discussion, we will use research data from MIT and other research institutions
on what drives great collaboration and effective communication.
