Bob: How does a guitar player from Perth gain such an audience in Europe?
MV: We have really put a lot of effort into making this happen. We put
everything we had into getting the band to Europe in 2000 to play
three tiny gigs in the Black Forrest. After around ten years and
twenty tours, we finally got signed to Jazzhaus Records in 2010
who’s attention we attracted after producing an album with Kevin
Shirley.
Bob: Where in Europe do you tour?
MV: We play a lot in Germany which has become our home
away from home. We also play in Austria, Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Poland, England, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France,
Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium.
Bob: Tell us about the new CD “Live & On Fire”.
MV: The new album consists mainly of material from “Never
Going Back” along with a few older tracks that have remained in
the live set. There was a pretty strong undercurrent from fans that
they wanted a new live album. The band had been talking about it
for a while so the time was right. Upon reflection, I think it’s the best
representation of the band to date.
Bob: Do you have a guitar tech?
MV: Yes and no. At home I have built a fantastic relationship with
Kevin Nitrovane who has been working with me to hone and fine-tune
my instruments for over 20 years. Only guitar players know that feeling,
when you’re just floating on the fretboard and the harmonics are true all over
the neck. Ah, the simple pleasures…
On tour however, I use guitars that I receive on loan from Tokai, they are set up
by Lupo’s Rock Shop in Stuttgart who do a great job. On the road I tweak the guitars
myself if necessary, and have learned to meditate during my daily chore of restringing
four guitars. I’ve never had any issues with these instruments other than not wanting to
give them back at the end of the tour!
Bob: What guitars do you use in the studio?
MV: For our next studio album, which we are working on as we speak, I am using my Tokai
guitars exclusively. They are just awesome! The clarity going to tape, whether crystal clean or
ugly dirty is just amazing. I’m really enjoying exploring the range of sounds we are getting, the
guitars are so inspiring that they are leading me to play things I wouldn’t have thought of previously, which is
just fantastic.
Bob: What about Amps and effects?
MV: On tour I’m not too fussy, as sometimes one has to use whatever is available at the time. Last tour I used
a Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb. The tour before that I used a Marshall JCM 800. In the past I have shipped
my amps to Europe, but for some reason they just don’t sound the same as they do at home. I have spent
quite a lot of time and money exploring power conditioners etc, but to no avail. I am open to the possibility
that it’s all in my head and I’ll just have to live with that, but to me they just sounded thin and trebly. As far as
pedals go at the gig, looking at the floor from right to left, this is what I see - TC Electronics Polytune tuner,
Rodenburg Gas 828 NG Overdrive, Cry Baby Classic Wah Wah, Klon Centaur, Fulltone Plimsoul Overdrive
and an MXR Stereo Chorus which I run mono. This leads into a Wampler Faux AnalogEcho Delay, then finally
into a Hermida Reverb, both of which sit on the top of my amp. Sometimes I may include a Fulltone Mini-Deja
Vibe just to mix it up a bit.
Bob: What’s in store for you in the coming year?
MV: First priority is to produce our new studio album which will be released next February in Europe, we’ll
back that up with another tour of Europe in February/ March. We are also looking at the east coast of Australia
to generate a fan base over there which until now has eluded us. We will also be performing some showcase
sets later in the year in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra which may help us rectify that situation.
