LESSON PLANNING AND PLANNER WRITING

WHY PLANNING A LESSON IS IMPORTANT?

∗ Be it the management of a dinner ∗ an important event ∗ or our daily routines ∗ planning makes every thing organized and saves us from wasting time and effort on unforeseen happenings. Planning

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT CLASSROOM RULES CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT ROOM ARRANGEMENT PLANNING ACTIVE LEARNING MAINTAINING ORDER Lesson planning is one of the integral parts of classroom management.

An effective lesson plan: ●has clear aims and SMART objectives ●has activities that are timed and related to learning objectives ●uses subject-specific language ●matches provision to students’ needs ●lists how resources will be used ●sets realistic expectations of effort, attainment, achievement, progress and behaviour ●uses homework to extend and apply learning

IMPORTANT POINTS ●Objectives: What do we want the students to know and be able to do or to understand? ●Resources :What resources will we need if the activities are to go ahead? ●Allocated time: Can the assigned task be completed during the allocated time? ●Starter Activity: to brainstorm , recap ,revise ,reinforce the previously taught concept or to gauge the students prior knowledge about the concept. ●Learning activities: What activities will enable students to reach the objectives? ●Afl: Does the student show progression of understanding and effective work representation ●Evaluation:How can we evaluate and assess the level of attainment targets?

SETTING OBJECTIVES

These are the learning wings and foundation of a lesson. It is of prime importance that a teacher defines the outline of expected learning outcomes. And it is crucial that: ●The pupils know, what the teacher expects them to do, learn and demonstrate in their new learning activity . ●The teacher should have absolute idea of the concepts to deliver during her lesson ; so the objective(s) should be clear. OBJECTIVES

MATERIALS RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ●Plan! Prepare! Go! ●Envision your needs. ●List all resources. ●Have enough manipulative (when needed) for groups or individuals.

A comprehensive guide to plan a starter activity: Six “R’s”: ●Rehearse: To practice and consolidate existing skills ●Recall: To secure knowledge of facts ●Refresh: To draw on and revisit previous learning ●Refine: To sharpen methods and procedures ●Read: To use appropriate vocabulary and interpret images ●Reason: To use and apply acquired knowledge STARTER ACTIVITIES OF A LESSON PLAN

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Learning activity:(main lesson) should: • have a smooth transition from the starter activity to the main lesson, covering the objectives; • be focused on the main and major objective; • deal with students’ thinking, learning and areas of concerns; • provide sufficient practice of the concept; • integrate with daily life application; • allow teacher and students to reflect and evaluate their teaching and learning outcomes. Learning activity

Plenaries can be used for a range of different purposes: • link the objectives & outcomes; • draw together the learning of the whole group & the individual; • summarize and take quick recap of the concept taught; • consolidate & extend learning; • highlight not only what has been learned but also how it has been learned Plenary /wrap up

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING ●Teacher-made test ●In-class or homework assignment ●Worksheets ●Performance assessments ●Informal assessment ●Feed back through out the lesson: in written form in-class or homework assignment. ●Feedback during class activities and discussions.

EVALUATING LESSONS For each lesson, ask: ●What happened? ●What effect did it have? ●Why did it happen? ●How could it be improved? ●How might the teacher/students have behaved differently? ●How should things be done next time?
