LYFE LYFE THURSDAY | APR 4, 2024 26 /theSunMedia FOLLOW ON YOUTUBE Malaysian Paper SHAH ALAM: Lotuss Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s (Lotus’s Malaysia) third annual #KitakanJiran Ramadan Cookout under the SamaSama Riang Berganda campaign, alongside long term partner Food Aid Foundation, brought joy to underprivileged communities across the country. Over 100 volunteers prepared and distributed 2,000 buka puasa meals to welfare homes, surau and mosques in Kota Baru, Seberang Jaya, Malacca and Shah Alam. Lotus’s Malaysia corporate services executive director Azliza Azmel said: “This Ramadan, our aim is to share Ramadan’s blessings by bringing joy to those less fortunate and help develop a sense of gratitude and community responsibility amongst our colleagues. The cookout this year is even more heartwarming as our colleagues from stores and head office took the opportunity to give their time to prepare and share nourishing buka puasa meals for 200 underprivileged children from six welfare homes and a school. “I also take this opportunity to thank the many brands that joined us in bringing delight to these children and homes through their generous contribution of products and vouchers amounting to RM 28,000.” In addition to the #KitakanJiran Cookout, Lotus’s teamed up with local animation company Animonsta to create a space and an opportunity for the children to interact and take part in activities such as Meet and Greet with BoBoiBoy and Mechamato, BoBoiBoy Galaxy Run, paper basket weaving and batik painting. Lotus’s and Adabi volunteers also cooked and gave away 2,400 bowls of bubur lambuk to customers at its Children from Pertubuhan Kasih Bestari enjoying their play time at the exclusive BoBoiBoy play area at Lotus’s Shah Alam, with special appearance by BoBoiBoy and Mechamato. store in Malacca and Shah Alam. Hakka language film made in India set for October premiere A new director from Kolkata is making a Hakka language movie based on the Chinese community in India’s own Chinatown, with real-people from the Tangra and Tiretta areas as casts – a first and unique project in India. Directed by rookie director Chahat Mansingka, the movie centres around death or loss, friendship, forgiveness, and love. The movie shows the reality faced by Chinese families in the city, whereby the elderly stay back while the younger generation migrates to different parts of the world. Chahat was inspired to delve into writing a script for the Chinese community as he lived near a Chinese dental community. “It is a closed community, which made it difficult to convince the Chinese people about my project and get them to act on it,” said the 26 yearold filmmaker, who had distributed pamphlets in hundreds to their homes to find his cast. But a Chinese food company in Tiretta Bazaar came to their rescue. Janice Lee, a director of Pou Chong, played an instrumental role by spreading the word through her Facebook account to find the cast. About 60 people from the community auditioned for the main roles, and six were selected, while 15 took on supporting and extra roles. For the main role, Chahat selected Priscilla Ching Liying, 57, a Chinese The Hakka film will show life in a Chinatown in India, specifically Tiretta Bazaar, Kolkata. – PIC FROM INSTAGRAM @WILD_FLOW ERS_AT_HER_ FEET █ BY S.TAMARAI CHELVI The film aims to capture the pulse of the vibrant Hakka community in India. – PIC FROM INSTAGRAM @OHKOLKATA descendant who was raised in Kolkata but shifted to Bangalore after marriage. “I flew down to Kolkata and stayed with the team for the shoot,” said Ching. Child educator-turned-actress Selena Yap, 29, who plays Ching’s daughter in the movie, revealed: “Acting in the film was an entirely different experience.” The shooting began in October around Tangra and Tiretta Bazaar, specifically focusing on Chinese tanneries, vegetable markets, restaurants, Pei Moi school, Nam Soon Church and Tiretta Bazaar. The filmmaker managed to capture the vibrant Chinese New Year celebration. “I hope this movie will leave a footprint of our existence in Kolkata for over two centuries, since the first Chinese landed in Achipur,” said Liu Mei Ling, who had contributed to the development of the storyline. Liu, a committee member of the World Hakka Conference Association, lives in Tangra. The movie is expected to be screened at the 33rd World Hakka Conference in Luoyang, China in October. The 30-year-old former world number three has struggled to get back to top form after suffering a wrist injury in 2021, which sidelined him for months and saw him slip down the rankings. Yesterday, Thiem claimed his first win on the ATP Tour in 2024 by beating German Maximilian Marterer 6-1, 6- 7(3), 6-4 in the first round of the Estoril Open. “(I’m going) to listen a bit to my body. To really take care that there is nothing coming up, no problems for the wrist. I cut down the intensity of my practice a little bit, but I’ve had enough practice in my life. I can handle it if it’s a little bit less,” Thiem said after his win. Berrettini wins in Marrakesh ITALY’S Matteo Berrettini won his first match on the main ATP circuit yesterday after an injury-plagued seven months. The former world No. 6, who has slipped to 135th, dispatched 56th-ranked Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko 6-2, 6-1 on the clay in Morocco. The Italian will next play Spaniard Jaume Munar in the second round. “Seven months without playing is a long time. I missed it and that’s why I have so much energy,” said Berrettini. The 27-year-old limped out of the US Open last August after rupturing right ankle ligaments and was forced to pull out of the Australian Open on the eve of his return with a foot injury. Berrettini reached the final of a Challenger event in Phoenix in March but lost in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Miami to Andy Murray later that same month. TRAMLINES

SPORTS SPORTS THURSDAY | APR 4, 2024 28 Last ticket to Augusta Winning Texas Open only chance for PGA Tour veteran Horschel to make Masters BILLY HORSCHEL hasn’t missed a major championship since 2018. He’s played in nine of the past 10 Masters, with a career-best finish of T17. But the PGA Tour veteran is facing a new reality following a rough 2022-23 season. Unless and until he plays better golf, he won’t be in any major field. Horschel, 37, arrived at this week’s Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio at No. 80 in the Official World Golf Ranking; had he been inside the top 50 at this point, he would qualify for next week’s Masters. The only way for him to get back to Georgia is to win the Texas Open. The winner of this week’s tournament, if not already qualified, will be the final player into the Masters field and Horschel is plenty aware. “Yeah, I’m not in Augusta and my main focus this week is to win,” Horschel said. “I think if you’re in Augusta, you’re sort of – ultimately you always want to win, but I think you’re sort of assessing where your game is, what you need to work on, some of the shots you may need to have to be able to play well at Augusta. “So yeah, there’s two different mindsets between the players that are in Augusta and the players that aren’t in Augusta.” Horschel made just 13 cuts in 23 starts in the 2022-23 tour season and notched three top-10 finishes. He didn’t make the FedEx Cup playoffs, leaving him on the outside looking in at the tour’s Signature Events to start 2024. “Yeah, I’m not happy that I’m not in Augusta or any of the majors as we sit here right now, but listen, it’s my own fault,” Horschel said. “I can’t do anything about that, I didn’t play well last year, but the great thing is this game of golf gives you opportunities to correct that wrong and I’m trying the best I can right now to make up for a bad year last year and get myself back to where I feel like I deserve to be in the game of golf or I want to be in the game of golf.” He’s begun making up for that bad year by putting together a strong March. Now Horschel will play the Texas Open for the first time since 2019. He has three top-five finishes at the event in his career. “It’s nice to be back and hopefully the success I’ve had in the past can continue to happen this week,” he said. Horschel’s recent performances have earned him fifth place in the Aon Swing 5 standings, which determine eligibility for upcoming Signature Events. As long as he stays inside that top five, Horschel will play his way into the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters. “I know I’ve had to play well this year,” Horschel said. “I haven’t played bad, I just haven’t played well enough, and to play well the last couple weeks to finally get myself in a position to be able to qualify for one of the Signature Events is huge.” – Field Level Media Yadav ‘bowling rockets’ in Lucknow’s IPL win SPEEDSTER Mayank Yadav bowled the quickest ball of the new IPL season at 156.7kph in a fiery spell to power Lucknow Super Giants to a 28-run win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru yesterday. Lucknow rode Quinton de Kock’s 56-ball 81 and an unbeaten 40 by Nicholas Pooran to post 181- 5 at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. New pace sensation Yadav then turned up the heat with his thunderbolts to return figures of 3- 14, which included removing Glenn Maxwell for a duck and bowling Cameron Green for nine. “Glad to have him in our team,” De Kock said of Lucknow’s pace ace. “He is bowling rockets at the moment. He is keeping things simple. Youngsters bowling express pace can get caught up trying different things.” Bengaluru were bowled out for 153 and suffered their third loss in four matches this season. Lucknow won their second straight match after an opening defeat. The 21-year-old Yadav surpassed his previous top speed, having sent down a ball at 155.8kph on his IPL debut in Lucknow’s first win of the season on Saturday. Shaun Tait bowled the IPL’s fastest ever ball in 2011 at 157.71kph. Delhi-born Yadav has set the tournament alight in his first two matches and ultimately dreams of representing his country. “I feel very good, winning two player of the match awards, but I am happier that we won both the matches,” he said. “My aim is to play for India as much as possible. So I feel this is just the start and my main goal is what I am focused on.” Bengaluru lost the wickets of Virat Kohli, skipper Faf du Plessis and Maxwell in the space of nine deliveries and three runs. Left-arm spinner Manimaran Siddharth, who came in as impact substitute in place of De Kock, got Kohli as his debut wicket as the star batsman miscued a shot to backward point and walked back after his 22 off 16 balls. Wickets kept tumbling and despite cameos from Rajat Patidar, who made 29, and Mahipal Lomror, who hit 33 off 13, the chase ended tamely. – AFP WORLD NO. 1 Nelly Korda will try to stretch her win streak to four events at the LPGA Match Play, which starts on Wednesday under a revamped format. A field of 96 players will compete at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas as the tournament moves beyond a match-play event to a hybrid starting with stroke play today, with the top eight players after 54 holes advancing to a weekend match-play competition. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested over the weekend ahead of Monday’s championship match. “Worry about stroke play. We have three days of it,” Korda said. “I know there’s a cut after two days and just eight girls get in, so definitely going to have to play some solid golf. Taking it more stroke play and hopefully get into the match play part of it.” Reigning Olympic champion Korda won her 11th career LPGA Tour title, and third in as many starts, at last week’s Ford Championship. She began her run in January’s Drive On Championship in her hometown of Bradenton, Florida, then backed it up with a victory at last month’s Seri Pak Championship. “I’m super proud of the events that I’ve played and the hard work that my team and I have put in to get those victories,” Korda said yesterday. “At the end of the day, it’s tough when you win first two out of three events in a row where you kind of can’t kind of think about it too much. You have to process what you’ve done but then you have to get ready for the next week.” Korda has practiced for two days on a layout she had never played before. “Had the day on Sunday afternoon, my five-hour drive, to process the win and had to get ready,” she said. “Just trying to stay very much so in the moment.” This week’s US$2 million (RM9.5m) event is the last tuneup ahead of the year’s first women’s major event, the Chevron Championship in two weeks. Other top players in the field include France’s third-ranked Celine Boutier, Minjee Lee of Australia, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and Kim Hyo-joo of South Korea. Thailand’s Pajaree Anannarukarn is back to defend her title. – AFP Korda out to stretch streak at LPGA Match Play SHORTS Split between PGA, LIV not sustainable: McIlroy THE rift between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is not sustainable and will not benefit anyone in the long term, Rory McIlroy told Golf Magazine yesterday. “There needs to be a correction. I think what’s happening is not sustainable right now, so something needs to happen to try to bring it all back together so we can all move forward so we don’t have this division that’s sort of ongoing,” McIlroy said. “They keep going down those different paths and I just don’t see how that benefits anyone in the long run… I think (it’s) a shame for the overall game of golf.” A potential merger between the two tours reportedly is ongoing, although the four-time major winner does not see that coming to fruition any time soon. “It’s certainly divided and I think what the framework and June 6 tried to do was unify the game which ultimately needs to happen,” McIlroy said. “We’re not there yet. We’re probably still quite a long ways from it, but I would hope that in the future that we can get there, unify the game and get the best players back together again.” It is unclear when or whether the tour and the PIF will finalize their “framework agreement” from last June after a self-imposed Dec 31 deadline came and went. In the meantime, LIV Golf has attracted the likes of Spaniard Jon Rahm. Bracewell back on Pakistan tour MICHAEL BRACEWELL will captain New Zealand for the first time on their Twenty20 tour of Pakistan this month, with a host of top names missing because they are playing in the Indian Premier League. Pakistan host New Zealand for five Twenty20 internationals, starting in Rawalpindi on April 18, as both teams warm up for June’s T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. All-rounder Bracewell was named captain yesterday on his return from more than a year out with a ruptured Achilles and broken finger in the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson, who is playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. “It’s three days that I’ll never forget,” Bracewell said. “I’m very excited, it’s a huge honour just to be picked again for New Zealand and then on top of that selected as captain. I wasn’t expecting that.” New Zealand selector Sam Wells said: “We have picked a squad with a lot of power and exciting bowling options.” New Zealand won 4-1 in a home five-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan in January. Red Bull issue statement denying claims by friend of accuser RED BULL have denied claims made by a friend of Christian Horner’s accuser amid the saga involving the Formula One team principal. Horner was accused of inappropriate behaviour by an unnamed Red Bull employee, but has strenuously denied the allegations throughout, with an independent investigation clearing the Brit of any wrongdoing. The accuser has appealed against the Red Bull decision, with the process ongoing, and now in an interview published by the BBC, a friend of Horner’s accuser spoke out about the controversy. “It is registered to go to an employment tribunal, which is public. As a friend, I can tell you I would assume that Horner, like he has done every step of the way, will do everything he can to make sure that the employee tribunal is not public. “Unfortunately, the date is a long time away. She has been threatened with legalese every step of the way, as has the media. She has now been suspended and it’s clear that’s Red Bull following a process to eventually fire her.” However, Red Bull have responded to those claims, with a spokesperson saying: “Christian has not made attempts to make sure the employment tribunal is private and she has not been suspended with the intent of firing her.” Lucknow Super Giants’ Mayank Yadav bowls during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. – AFPPIX

SPORTS SPORTS THURSDAY | APR 4, 2024 29 O’Neil praises resilient Wolves WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS manager Gary O’Neil praised the resilience his side showed yesterday in their 1-1 draw at Burnley. Wolves boss O’Neil called the 1-1 draw a “fair result” as his injury-hit side had to dig in to earn a point that takes them to 42 for the campaign, surpassing last season’s total. Rayan Ait-Nouri’s header was his third goal in four for Wolves as he played in a more advanced role while several forwards have been out injured. Although the Algerian squandered a superb chance in the second half when played in one-on-one, O’Neil was grateful for his goalscoring form. “He’s doing unbelievably well with the changes and the different areas we’re asking him to pop up in,” he said. “Not very often but occasionally he looks like a left-back, unfortunately those two times have been when he’s six yards with just the goalkeeper to beat, but an unbelievable performance from him again. “Burnley would have fancied this. Wolves coming with no Pedro Neto, no Matheus Cunha, no (Hee Chan) Hwang, no (Jean-Ricner) Bellegarde, no (Craig) Dawson, Burnley would have seen this as a game they could go and try and win, definitely. “And the lads didn’t look like a team that had reached 41 points and were happy to settle. I thought they fought, worked, showed moments of quality. I’m really proud of what they produced and the situation is looking brighter.” Patience pays off for Cherries BOURNEMOUTH manager Andoni Iraola praised his side’s patience after a late goal from Justin Kluivert earned a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace. Dutchman Kluivert’s strike 11 minutes from time was enough to seal the Cherries’ third straight win and their fourth in five matches. Iraola, whose side found it tough going to breach Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson and his stubborn defence, also praised substitute Antoine Semenyo for setting up the winning goal after coming on at half-time. “Tonight probably wasn’t the game we wanted to play because Palace are a team that want to keep position and want to defend on the ball without being too direct in attack,” he said. “They were not creating chances but we were not comfortable but I think we dealt quite well with the game. We had a strong bench and scored another late goal, which is not a bad thing. “We have almost two players in each position and that is good for the competition and also helped provide energy in the second half. “Antoine had a headache before the game but at least he was able to give us a good 45 minutes and make the assist and he was a very important player for us.” Valuable point for Toffees Dyche pleased with Everton’s second-half display in Newcastle draw S EAN DYCHE hailed Everton’s second-half “edge” as they came from behind to rescue a valuable point in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle. The Magpies went ahead through Alexander Isak’s first-half strike, but spurned a number of opportunities before Everton struck back in the latter stages. Paul Dummett’s challenge on Ashley Young saw the Toffees awarded a penalty in the 87th minute and after a VAR check, substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to slot home from the spot. A draw still hands Everton an unwanted record of 13 Premier League games without a win, but Dyche believes his side secured a “good point” on the road. “I thought it was a pretty decent performance, but at half-time I mentioned that edge and how we turn that into a winning performance and I thought second half was a very valid attempt to do that,” he said. “We didn’t get the win but we get a good point on the road in the Premier League, it’s always important. “The penalty of course, we’ve only had one this season, should have had another one Saturday but we didn’t get that. “I don’t know why they have to look at that a hundred times, it’s absolutely bizarre because I’ve seen it back and it gets given straight away. “Anyway, they did get to the right decision so we’re pleased with that, and Dom put it away so we’re pleased for him as well.” It was only Calvert-Lewin’s fourth goal of the season in the Premier League, but Dyche praised the forward for his hard work. “It changes the noise around him, he’s been working hard, Beto has also worked hard as well,” Dyche added. Newcastle looked to be heading for a second win in four days when Isak fired them into the lead with his 19th goal of the season. But having seen James Tarkowski rattle his own post, Dan Burn have a goal ruled out for offside and Vitaly Mykolenko clear an Isak shot off the line, the visitors finished strongly. James Garner had already hit the woodwork when they got their reward from the spot. Asked about his overriding emotion after the game, Magpies head coach Eddie Howe said: “Definitely frustrated. “I thought we needed that second goal. It looked like we’d got it on a couple of occasions – of course, the VAR one was really, really tight and then Alex’s chance looked a big moment in the game. “At 1-0, Everton were never out of it. They’ve hit the post themselves and of course the penalty is probably the big moment.” “When you look at it (the penalty decision) back – which I have very quickly – both players are grappling each other initially, but I think it’s just the height of Paul’s arm around Ashley’s neck that swings it against us. “Probably if the boot’s on the other foot, I’m wanting a penalty for that.” – The Independent Nuno talks up Gibbs-White after impressive performance NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO hailed the importance of Morgan Gibbs-White after he inspired Nottingham Forest to a vital 3-1 win over Fulham. Gibbs-White put in a virtuoso display in a golden first half which saw Forest cruise into a 3-0 lead. After setting up Callum HudsonOdoi’s opener, he watched as Chris Wood made it 2-0 before completing the scoring with a fine finish on the stroke of half-time. “Morgan is a very special player for us,” the Portuguese said. “Very important, talented, the work rate on the pitch, but to allow Morgan to have these moments a lot of things happen behind, hard work by the boys and this is very important.” That sublime opening 45 minutes laid the foundations for just a second League win of 2024 for Forest and the first since they were deducted four points for breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules last month. That opened up a three-point gap over Luton, who occupy 18th position and visit title-chasing Arsenal overnightt, but Nuno is not getting carried away. “Of course I am pleased, I am pleased with the performance, it was a good one, much improvement from previous games,” he said. “After the points deduction it was very important we had some urgency of getting some good results. It’s what we fight for, it’s about points and we need them desperately. “With all the noise that’s going on around us, it’s very hard to keep that togetherness. But the credit goes to the players because they are sticking with their tasks. “We know it was important for us today, but let’s not get over the moon. There is still a long way to go.” Forest had to endure a nervy time as Tosin Adarabioyo’s header gave Fulham a lifeline and the visitors spent most of the second half knocking on the door. “Bad performance, disappointing evening for us, really disappointing result. When you don’t start the game the way you should of course you are going to get punished,” Fulham boss Marco Silva said. “In the first half we didn’t play, we were there but we didn’t play. We weren’t there, we didn’t do what we planned, we were so, so slow.” – The Independent BURNLEY manager Vincent Kompany was left to rue another refereeing decision after his relegation-battling side were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves. A day after Kompany said refereeing standards in the Premier League this season have “not been good enough”, the Belgian disputed Thomas Bramall’s decision to award Wolves the free-kick from which Rayan Ait-Nouri cancelled out Jacob Bruun Larsen’s goal deep into first half stoppage time. Ait-Nouri went down under a challenge from Dara O’Shea, but Kompany said there had been no contact between the two. “Don’t get me on referees again!” Kompany said. “But if we have to, of course, it was an issue. “If you do a pirouette and you fall on your own, absolutely no contact made, then it’s just not a foul, I think we can all agree on this. “But then as well the referee is in the best position ever, a really good position, he sees it, I can see it from three times as far as he is and for some reason there’s a decision made out of nothing. “Then I look at my own team, and how we defend the set-play, that’s always the case, but yes, it’s a repeat and it doesn’t make it any easier.” The draw extended Burnley’s unbeaten run to four games, but the gap to safety grew to six points as Nottingham Forest beat Fulham 3-1. Burnley were on top for much of the game, but could not make their dominance pay. However, Kompany saw it as a point gained rather than two lost. “We played in every sense how we were supposed to,” he said. “We were aggressive, we were on the front foot, we created chances. I feel at every level it was a good performance. I’ll take the point and we go again. “I can only praise the players. They looked like a Premier League team today. It doesn’t buy us any points or get us any higher in the league. Perhaps we belong a little bit higher if it hadn’t been for so many bad decisions. “Right now we’ve not earned the right to remain in the Premier League. All we need is a fighting chance, that’s all. The win edged Juventus closer to their 22nd final in the cup, which they have won a record 14 times. The return leg will be played in Rome on April 23. Juventus could have opened the scoring early in the game when they were awarded a penalty for Matias Vecino’s foul on defender Andrea Cambiaso but the referee overturned his decision after a VAR check showed that the Juve right-back was offside. Lazio, who lost striker Mattia Zaccagni through injury in the 14th minute, looked better in the opening half, pressing for chances while they held more possession. But the visitors, who on Saturday edged Juve 1-0 at home in Serie A with a lastgasp goal, struggled for precision and Chiesa eventually gave Juventus the lead five minutes after the break. The Italy striker profited from a neat vertical pass by Cambiaso to strike from the edge of the box low inside the right post. The goal sparked Juventus into life and Vlahovic doubled their advantage in the 64th minute, netting into the bottom far corner. Weston McKennie played Vlahovic in from the right flank with a first touch for the Serbian to break into the box and score his 10th goal across all competitions since the turn of the year. “It was a really difficult period for all of us, we knew we had to be up to this game,” Vlahovic told Mediaset. “We played against a very strong team, with a strong coach. We gave everything and after the goal everything became easier.” Juventus are unbeaten in their last 23 home games in the competition, a record streak for the Bianconeri in the tournament. Their last home Italian Cup defeat came in March 2015, a 2-1 loss to Fiorentina with a brace from Mohamed Salah. Lazio, who have reached the Italian Cup semifinals for the first time since 2018-19, ended the game with no shots on target, suffering five consecutive defeats away from home in the competition for the first time. – Reuters Enrique ‘very happy’ with Mbappe PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN coach Luis Enrique said yesterday he was “very happy” with star attacker Kylian Mbappe as he downplayed rumours of a rift. Following Mbappe’s announcement to the club in February that he would leave Paris at the end of his contract this summer, the Frenchman has seen his playing minutes reduced and he looked visibly unhappy when substituted off with half an hour to play in PSG’s 2-0 win at Marseille on Sunday. Asked about Mbappe’s attitude when leaving the pitch at the Velodrome, PSG’s Spanish coach Luis Enrique said: “What’s curious is everything that’s being said based on a piece of false news. “Someone has invented an insult (based on a lipreading of a video showing Mbappe as he made his way off the pitch) and then from that comes all kinds of speculations.” After the match, Mbappe posted a photo on Instagram of himself walking off the field under the rain, holding the captain’s armband in his hand – in the absence of Brazilian defender Marquinhos, the attacker was PSG’s captain on the night. “I’m taking it all in my stride. I’m very happy with all my players, Kylian included, he’s always behaved admirably,” said Luis Enrique. The Spaniard said in an interview with Prime Video that Mbappe “can still change his mind” about leaving. Although heavily linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid, Mbappe has still not announced where he will play football next season after his current contract expires with PSG. Luis Enrique’s former side Barcelona will visit PSG for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie next week. “We’re all in the same boat, sailing and seeking success,” said Luis Enrique of his side’s treble quest. “I’d love this to end well for PSG, for Kylian, for everyone.” On Tuesday, Lyon host second-division Valenciennes in the first semi-final tie of the French Cup with the winners facing either PSG or Rennes in May’s showpiece final. – AFP Lacazette fires Lyon into French Cup final ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE scored twice as Lyon defeated second-tier Valenciennes 3- 0 yesterday to reach the French Cup final. Valenciennes, who are almost certain to be relegated from Ligue 2, had a first-half goal disallowed following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up. Lacazette won and converted a penalty in the 51st minute and then added a second with a clinical finish on the turn. Gift Orban replaced Lacazette and tapped in Lyon’s third with 15 minutes left to seal Lyon’s place in the May 25 final in Lille. It will be Lyon’s first appearance in the final since 2012, when they beat third-division Quevilly to lift the most recent of their five French Cups. Kaiserslautern end Saarbruecken run KAISERSLAUTERN became the first side from outside the Bundesliga to reach the German Cup final yesterday since 2011, ending third-tier Saarbruecken’s run with a 2-0 victory. Hosts Saarbruecken were bidding to become the first third-division club to lift the trophy in the competition’s history, but came up short after goalkeeper Tim Schreiber’s costly error. Saarbruecken had already knocked Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Moenchengladbach out of the cup, but came unstuck against fallen giants Kaiserslautern. “That hurts so much,” Saarbruecken coach Ruediger Ziehl told ARD. “We didn’t have to lose that game. We paid for one mistake.” SIDENETTING Juventus’ Federico Chiesa celebrates scoring against Lazio. –REUTERSPIX

SPORTS SPORTS THURSDAY | APR 4, 2024 31 MALAYSIA have to accept that they have a rocky path ahead in the Thomas Cup 2024 even if professional player Lee Zii Jia is available for their campaign in Chengdu, China, said former national singles champion Roslin Hashim. He said Malaysia have been caught in a tricky situation due to uncertainties surrounding the participation of Zii Jia and Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist Ng Tze Yong. “Tze Yong’s injury has affected us and if Zii Jia does not want to play, our team will be shaky. “The team must be prepared to accept Zii Jia’s decision. It may be a relief if he agrees to play but I still can’t see the way forward for the team in the Thomas Cup 2024,” he told Bernama. Zii Jia’s participation now hangs in the balance after Academy Badminton Malaysia coaching director Rexy Mainaky said yesterday that the world No. 11 is unsure of representing the country in the world men’s team championship. Rexy said Team LZJ is drawing up the best plans for the All England 2021 champion in his quest for glory at the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris, scheduled for July 26 to Aug 11. He had earlier said Tze Yong, who is undergoing rehabilitation following recent back surgery, might be listed for Thomas Cup duty, depending on his condition in the next few weeks. Malaysia, seeded fifth in the Thomas Cup, have been drawn in Group D together with 2016 champions Denmark, Hong Kong and African continent representative Algeria. With Denmark being group favourites due to the strength of their singles, Roslin said the outcome against Hong Kong will be crucial in determining whether Malaysia can clear the group stage and qualify for the quarterfinals. “Hong Kong will surely rely on their singles to steal points from Malaysia, who have the edge in the doubles. Let’s say Zii Jia plays in the Thomas Cup; it is still difficult to predict his performance against Hong Kong’s top player Angus Ng Ka Long, who has a good record against him,” he said. If both Zii Jia and Tze Yong are not available, Roslin said, Malaysia have no choice but to field Leong Jun Hao as the first singles, followed by two young players, Justin Hoh and Eogene Ewe. The Thomas Cup will be held from April 27 to May 5 and the submission of players’ names dateline is on April 13. – Bernama ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Bournemouth 1 (Kluivert 79) Crystal Palace 0, Burnley 1 (Bruun Larsen 37) Wolves 1 (Ait Nouri 45+3), Newcastle 1 (Isak 15) Everton 1 (Calvert-Lewin 88-pen), Nottingham Forest 3 (Hudson-Odoi 9, Wood 19, Gibbs-White 45+3) Fulham 1 (Adarabioyo 49), West Ham 1 (Zouma 19) Tottenham 1 (Johnson 5). The 2023 Taiwan Open champion and his teammate, Toh Ee Wei have unofficially confirmed their ticket to Paris by being ranked eighth out of the world’s best eight in the qualification ranking that will close on April 28. “Even though the priority is the Olympic Games, we must be prepared to give our best performance in tournaments such as BAC as it is a platform to keep our momentum. “If you can win a title why not? The preparations are as usual (and) just came back from Switzerland so it’s not possible that the training could be (much) different. “The most important thing is how we perform at the tournament,” he told reporters yesterday. Asked if they were ready to go toe-to-toe with world No. 1 Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong of China in the first round of the BAC, Tang Jie said they would give everything to pull off a surprise in the match after losing three times in their previous meetings. However, the 26-year-old athlete admitted to being in the best of health, free from injury as well as getting psychological services from specialist Frederick Tan provided by Badminton Association of Malaysia and it is very important to get through this season. “I had just recovered from a fever and have to take care of whatever I eat. Hopefully we can see the difference in these three months. “He (Frederick) is going to BAC as the first tournament. I am excited to work with him,” he said. – Bernama I play my best squash when I’m relaxed, says Sivasangari LONDON Squash Classic 2024 champion S.Sivasangari says it is her mantra of keeping calm and seizing the moment that sparked her remarkable triumph in the tournament. The current world No. 13 Sivasangari rocked the squash world as she defied the odds by beating three top four players including a thrilling win against world No. 2 from Egypt, Hania El Hammamy 11-9, 5-11, 13-11, 12-14, 11-8 in the final in Alexandra Palace, London. The Asian Games reigning champion attributed her recent success to maintaining composure and enjoying the game without succumbing to pressure to secure her maiden Gold-tier Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour title. “For me, I just want to forget about all that and just enjoy what I do. I think I play my best squash when I’m relaxed, so I hope to continue these form and mentality in upcoming tournaments too. “I’ve always wanted to challenge these top players and try to beat them, so to be doing it in this tournament, definitely feels amazing,” she told Bernama when contacted. Sivasangari said the famous London glory had boosted her confidence significantly as she aims to become the world’s best, with the ultimate goal of contributing gold medal for the country in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Drawing inspiration from her exceptional performance in London, the 25-year-old vowed to continue striving for more successes in the future and eyes to break into the top 10 Currently taking a few days off in Spain, she is gearing up to compete in the El Gouna International Squash Open in Cairo from April 19-26, followed by the 2023-2024 PSA World Championships, also in Cairo from May 9-17. – Bernama Rocky path ahead Malaysia Thomas Cup squad still ‘shaky’ even with Zii Jia RESULTS & STANDINGS S’pore rules out playing CG host SINGAPORE yesterday joined Malaysia in ruling out hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, further plunging the future of the multi-sport event into doubt. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has been scrambling to find a new host after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew last year because of soaring costs. Malaysia emerged as a possible replacement but turned down the opportunity last month because of the cost, despite the offer of a £100 million (RM597m) sweetener from the CGF. The financial support is available to any prospective host. “Commonwealth Games Singapore and Sport Singapore have studied the feasibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and have decided not to make any bid to host the Games,” the two sports bodies said in a joint statement, giving no more detail. Victoria’s sudden pullout, and the lack of an obvious alternative, have raised doubts over the future of the Games. Brennan Johnson’s early strike was cancelled out by a goal from Kurt Zouma as a frantic London derby ended all square. “I thought for the most part we controlled the game pretty well,” said the Spurs boss. “They are a big strong team. They sit deep and make it difficult for you. You have to be fairly calm in your approach but also really disciplined because they are a threat from the counter-attack. “We conceded from a set-piece but the rest of the set-pieces we coped with really well. In the front third we lacked a bit of clarity of thought. “But they are human beings, it is just football. I would love to have a joystick and put them where I want them, but it doesn’t work like that. “Sometimes we have more time than we think. There were times when the ball was flashed across the box when we should have been in those areas. “It is all part of the development. That is why we have coaches, why we develop a system. We are not the finished article and we know that. “There was enough there tonight for me to say that it is a team still heading in the right direction.” West Ham should have gone ahead inside four minutes when Mohammed Kudus rolled the ball across goal, but Jarrod Bowen put a simple chance wide. Just over a minute later they were behind when Tottenham put a carbon copy chance away, Timo Werner crossing for Johnson to sweep home. The Hammers equalised in bizarre fashion in the 19th minute when Bowen swung in a corner. With Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario rooted to his line, the unmarked Zouma went up for a header and glanced the ball into the net off his back. “It came off my and head and shoulder,” said Zouma. “The m o s t important thing is it went in. We didn’t start well but the reaction was good, and it’s good for confidence. “It was a really intense game. We gave so much energy. We know Tottenham attack with six people and we had to counter that.” Michail Antonio spurned a glorious chance to put West Ham ahead after half-time when he held off Micky van de Ven to go one on one with Vicario, only to fluff his finish. Destiny Udogie could have won it for Spurs in stoppage time but drilled his shot straight at Lukasz Fabianski. “It was probably fair in the end, we did a lot of good things and showed much more resilience in defence tonight,” said Hammers boss David Moyes. “We looked a threat and had to do a good job to stop a very good Tottenham team.” Moyes, whose side won 2-1 at Tottenham in December, added: “If you’d offered me four points off Spurs this season I would’ve shook your hand, said ‘thanks very much’ and walked away,‘ said the West Ham boss. “We had a threat and so did they – they are a good side and that’s why they are challenging for the Champions League. “I’m sure after the way we played on the weekend, to see the way the defence played ([here), we looked much more organised. We had setpieces, we had chances, so overall hopefully it will give us good confidence.” Moyes’ men have now conceded 55 League goals this season, the same number as they lost during the whole of 2022-23, and are without a clean sheet in 11 matches. But there is clearly some fire in this West Ham side, sparked by the inspirational Bowen, who raised a taunting fist in defiance at the away fans after delivering the deadball routine for Zouma’s equaliser. – The Independent/Agencies SCAN ME THURSDAY | APR 4, 2024 or download app from the App Store or Google PlayTM . www.thesun.my Free access to iPaper PDF Download SCAN ME Malaysian Paper Read iPaper at Malaysian Paper Malaysian Paper Work in progress Tottenham not finished article but on right track: Postecoglou Tottenham’s Son Heung-min looks dejected after the English Premier League match against West Ham at the London Stadium yesterday. – REUTERSPIX Yadav ‘bowling rockets in Lucknow’s IPL win -Story - on page 29 Story on page 28 ‘Don’t get me on referees again’ -Story on page 30 One boot in final
