Vital to overcome weaknesses in governance, graft: PM KUALA LUMPUR: Weaknesses in governance and widespread systemic corruption are critical issues that must be addressed immediately before tackling the structural problems that undermine the country’s economic strength, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a live address to the nation on Tuesday night, Anwar said he emphasised the corruption issue because it is the primary cancer that weakens the country’s economy, eroding morals and diminishing people’s confidence. He said corruption occurs at every level, top to bottom, burdening the people with the whims of certain groups seeking commissions before giving any approvals. “In the first year itself, I stressed on the need to stop the practice of direct negotiation in government procurement, referred to as negotiated tender, and to transition to an open tender system.” Earlier, Anwar said the stagnant economy of the people, the lacklustre business ecosystem and the weak financial position of the federal government are the structural problems that are o‘Corruption the primary cancer that weakens nation’s economy, erodes morals and diminishes confidence of the people’ decreasing Malaysia’s economic strength. On the issue of punishment for the corrupt raised by the people, Anwar said investigations are ongoing and that legal avenues and court processes must be followed. He said the government fully empowers enforcement agencies such as the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the National Audit Department to act firmly and ensure a more orderly civil service free from corruption, sluggishness and laziness. “Most importantly, this practice (corruption) must be stopped. The process takes time and is sometimes exhausting. Like many others, I am also impatient. Why have no actions been taken to address past practices of amassing wealth unlawfully?” On the actions of certain parties which belittle the effort to fight corruption, saying it is only a political slogan, Anwar said it is common in politics, and he believes the corruption issue can be resolved if it is addressed consistently and steadfastly. Citing the flood mitigation projects implemented through open tender, Anwar said the government saved RM2 billion in public funds. He said the government had also busted civil servants involved in smuggling syndicates at the country’s entry points, whose action had cost the country up to RM2 billion since 2017. Anwar added that there have been attempts to disrupt peace in the nation and its thriving economy. “In recent weeks, our nation has been shocked by several violent incidents that have claimed the lives of security personnel as well as actions by extremist groups and instigators. “I assure you that, after my meeting with security forces, we will take firm action against these groups, and Insya-Allah, the situation will become calmer and more controlled.” On May 17, two police officers at the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor Bahru, Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, were killed after being attacked by a masked man armed with a machete while another policeman, Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, was injured after being shot. On the same day, in a separate incident in Kuala Lumpur, two local men were arrested by police officers after attempting to trespass into Istana Negara. A machete was later found in the suspects’ vehicle, Bernama reported. On Saturday, the police confirmed receiving a report from Seputeh MP Teresa Kok over a death threat through a letter sent to her house along with two bullets. On Sunday, a 35-year-old local man was arrested after being suspected of trespassing at the Dato’ Keramat police station in Penang and attempting to seize a police officer’s submaching gun. THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 3 PETALING JAYA: One million Malaysians over 15 years old are experiencing depression, according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023, but there is a grossly inadequate number of psychiatrists to deal with the problem. Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital psychiatry and mental health department head Dr Fariza Yahya said the figure has doubled from 2019, with about 50% of cases exhibiting self-harming behaviour and suicidal tendencies. International Islamic University Malaysia psychiatrist Dr Rozanizam Zakaria said in January 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that more than 264 million people of all ages globally were affected by depression. He said the organisation suggests a minimum threshold of at least one psychiatrist per 100,000 population as a basic indicator of mental health service availability. “Currently, Malaysia has about 500 psychiatrists resulting in a ratio of approximately 0.52 psychiatrists per 100,000 patients, which falls very short of what WHO recommends.” Fariza said the hospital’s Psychiatric Specialist Clinic receives 50 new mental health cases for treatment each month, with 25 of them involving patients suffering from depression. “The prevalence of depression is about 5% worldwide. Cases are more prevalent in major cities where there are more stressors, especially for those with financial issues, low income and poor social support. “The most affected age group are those between 20 and 40. Even though we cannot prevent depression we can stop it from worsening by treating it as soon as possible.” Fariza said those who seek psychiatric treatment usually have moderate to severe symptoms that have deteriorated their social functions and caused them to have suicidal thoughts, or exhibit such behaviour. She said it is crucial to raise awareness on the severity and dangers of mental illness, as it is among the leading causes of death due to suicide. “The stigma of having mental illness causes people to avoid seeking treatment. Malays, in particular, attribute the illness to supernatural causes or being possessed by spirits.” She said some patients sought treatment from traditional medicine practitioners in villages, while others attempted self-treatment with illegal drugs such as pil kuda (methamphetamine). Fariza said methamphetamine is a stimulant that may make patients feel happy for the moment, but it does not treat depression as they will return to their original state once the euphoric effect subsides. “Males with mental illness also usually suffer from substance abuse or addiction to narcotics. “More serious mental illness in younger age groups are usually triggered by depression, unstable family environments, traumatic events, history of abuse, relationship problems and academic pressures.” Fariza said common factors leading to depression among middle-aged and elderly individuals are their chronic or terminal illnesses which are further compounded by marital or financial problems. “Work-related stress is also a significant factor within the age group, while housewives often face depression due to abusive husbands or those who are drug addicts.” Rozanizam said apart from psychiatrists, the country desperately needs a multidisciplinary team of clinical psychologists, counsellors, occupational therapists and mental health nurses. He said such a team is critical for managing and treating mental health conditions. However, the government also needs to implement supportive policies and provide training for various stakeholders to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Rozanizam said there must be moves to promote acceptance and inclusion for all individuals facing mental health challenges, and stressed the importance of enhancing accessibility to mental health services in disadvantaged and rural areas. He said this could be achieved through increased financial support and additional resources, with a focus on improving community mental health services and preventive programmes. “We should encourage greater involvement of non-governmental organisations to strengthen mental health support and include resilience-building skills into the education curriculum beginning at the primary school level.” Exciting activities await visitors at Unity Week event JOHOR BAHRU: An exciting lineup of activities awaits visitors in conjunction with the National Unity Week 2024 celebration, which will be held at Padang Akasia and Begonia, Angsana Johor Bahru Mall for four days, starting today. The National Unity Ministry said about 20 interesting activities will be held, including a unique exhibition featuring houses representing 22 ethnic groups alongside the Orang Asli settlements and the Iban longhouses, which are expected to attract visitors. Also being held are the Rahmah Sales, the Malaysia Bertuah Tanah Berdaulat exhibition, a 50% discount in summonses, the National Registration Department’s Bas Mekar service, the Road Transport Department helmet exchange, “FoodUnites & Foodtruck” and a Kembara Ilmu. State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the approval process will consider various procedures that must be followed, with a decision yet to be reached. “Colebrand International Limited is currently unable to conduct the field study. While discussions have taken place, approval for the process has not been granted. “Hence, the field study remains pending due to potential constraints, including other states also seeking to build new international airports. Nevertheless, we will stay updated on the progress through the Transport Ministry (MOT).” He said this after officiating the closing of the Road Safety Explorvokasi Programme at Universiti Teknologi Mara on Tuesday. The state government had previously expressed hope that the federal government would approve the construction proposal for the Seri Iskandar International Airport, situated in central Perak, as a means to stimulate the state’s economic development. The airport is seen as essential for meeting the state’s requirements to attract investments, particularly from the Lumut Maritime Industrial City, which holds the potential to generate up to RM72 billion in investments over the next 25 years. Previously, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the state already possesses appropriate land for the airport’s development. However, the proposals are contingent upon approval from the MOT and the Finance Ministry. The proposed Seri Iskandar International Airport is slated for construction on a new site spanning approximately 1,618.7ha near Felcra Nasaruddin in Bota. Funding for the project will be facilitated through private finance initiatives. Meanwhile, Mohammad Nizar stressed the state government’s serious concern regarding the frequent accidents reported, particularly along the Menora Tunnel route. He expressed hope that the construction of the West Ipoh Span Expressway (WISE) will contribute to the reduction in fatal accidents. The WISE highway, stretching 60km, will have three lanes in both direction starting from Gopeng through Batu Gajah, Siputeh, Manong, Tronoh, Beko, Seri Iskandar and finally reaching Kuala Kangsar. - Bernama Socso career initiative plan for schools KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) aims for at least 552 schools nationwide, encompassing various educational streams, to participate in the MYFutureJobs Career Exploration Programme (CEP). She said with growing attention to poverty issues and the idea of multidimensional poverty, it is imperative stakeholders receive the necessary training to ensure the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is comprehended fully and applied in policy and decision making. “As one of the strategies to combat poverty, training programmes based on the MPI should be developed to provide individuals and organisations with the knowledge, tools and capacity necessary to comprehend and tackle the complexities of poverty that extend beyond income-based measures.” On Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is serious in its efforts to increase the earnings of the people and eradicate hardcore poverty in Malaysia. He said the implementation of the People’s Income Initiative, in collaboration with state governments, has shown progress. He also said the government is formulating a Progressive Wage Policy for the private sector, in line with improvements made to the salaries and allowances of civil servants. Suhaiza said a well thought out training plan would provide stakeholders with tools they need to analyse and interpret data, enabling them to effectively use the MPI in intervention efforts and policy making. She said training on information dissemination and capacity building should also be carried out to maximise the impact of the MPI in materialising specialised and focused actions in addressing the unique aspects of poverty. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the artefacts were provided by Tun Muhammad Amin Tun Ahmad from Bentan Island, Riau in Indonesia, who is said to be the 11th heir of Hang Tuah. “The Keris Sundang is believed to be a relic from Hang Tuah and a gift from his father-in-law (Bendahara) Tun Perak. The handle of the keris is made of silver, which symbolises Tun Perak’s gift to his son-in-law. “The second artefact, a pair of Keris Hukum or Keris Sula (for impalement), is used for executions (one for men, one for women) as ordered by the Sultan to the Bendahara,” he said. Earlier, Ab Rauf received the artefacts from Tun Muhammad Amin in a brief ceremony at a hotel in Ayer Keroh. Also present was State Tourism, Heritage, Art and Culture Committee chairman exco Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman. “The artefacts will be the main attraction in the Hang Tuah Exhibition, which runs until the end of June in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year,” said Ab Rauf. “The Malacca government believes that with the discoveries and various evidence that have been successfully collected by a group of researchers, including the discovery of various artefacts from many countries, it will be able to straighten out the distortion of history by the colonialists on Hang Tuah and the Malay Sultanate of Malacca.” He also said in conjunction with the exhibition, other Hang Tuah artefacts will also be exhibited, namely those from Okinawa in Japan, as well as India and Turkiye. He added that historical findings also detail Hang Tuah’s travels and voyages, and that he was a significant diplomat born in Malacca in the 14th century. – Bernama not well-off. The operations began modestly, with Muhammad Farhan distributing just three packets of nasi lemak to underprivileged residents in his neighbourhood. But the initiative quickly gained momentum with the help of friends, and he now regularly provides between 200 and 300 food packets to those in need. Currently serving as an information officer at the National Blood Centre, Muhammad Farhan said he distributes food every Saturday or Sunday without fail. “We focus on those in need, including the elderly, and we distribute the food packets from house to house.” Muhammad Farhan, who was appointed a Unity Ambassador by the National Unity Ministry, also said he bears the bulk of the food costs from his own funds, but his friends supplement it as and when they can. His unwavering dedication to helping vulnerable groups has not gone unnoticed. Recognised by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Muhammad Farhan was honoured with the MyHero 4.0 Award 2023, which he dedicated to his late father. The recognition honours those who exemplify unwavering commitment to serving others selflessly, as true heroes and heroines. In 2014, 2016, and 2018, a total of 18 Malaysians, including Muhammad Farhan, were bestowed with MyHero awards. Reflecting on his achievement, he expressed gratitude and said: “Upon receiving the award, I felt a deep sense of appreciation, knowing that the prize money could make a meaningful impact by aiding the less fortunate with essential food supplies.” He emphasised the collaborative effort behind his success, acknowledging the support of his friends, without whom his accomplishments would not have been possible. THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 7 Vietnam parliament confirms new president HANOI: Vietnam’s parliament elected former police minister To Lam as the state president yesterday, in a move analysts see as a “stepping stone” for Lam to bid later for the position of chief of the ruling Communist Party, the country’s top job. Lam’s election followed the appointment on Monday by Vietnam’s National Assembly of its new chairman, former deputy Tran Thanh Man, possibly bringing to a temporary end twomonths of heightened political turbulence which saw the exit of three of Vietnam’s top five leaders over unspecified wrongdoings. In line with normal procedures in the tightlycontrolled one-party state, lawmakers voted unanimously on a resolution that approved Lam’s appointment. That followed his nomination by the Communist Party last week. As head of the Public Security Ministry, Lam, 66, has been a crucial figure in a sweeping antigraft campaign, known as “blazing furnace”, which is aimed at rooting out widespread corruption but has also been seen by critics as a tool to sideline opponents during political infighting. That in turn is denting the country’s appeal among foreign investors, who mostly reduced their securities holdings in recent months in coincidence with bad political news. It is also paralysing the public administration, with billions of dollars in foreign aid and public funds unspent. After his election, Lam told lawmakers he would “resolutely and persistently continue the fight against corruption”. The state president holds a largely ceremonial role but is one of the country’s top four political positions, the so-called ‘four pillars’. The others are the party chief, the prime minister and the parliament speaker. Political infighting is expected to temporarily abate after Lam’s election, said Carl Thayer, emeritus professor and Vietnam expert at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. But the crucial battle remains to be fought, as ageing party chief Nguyen Phu Trong’s third term ends in 2026 – or earlier if he steps down before his mandate expires. “To Lam could use his position as one of the ‘four pillars’ as a stepping stone to become general secretary,” said Thayer, referring to the top job in the party. “With the elevation to the office of president, it becomes clear that there are more ambitions for To Lam than retirement,” said Florian Feyerabend, the representative in Vietnam for Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a think tank, noting the position could be a “launch pad” to win the party chief job. Until that crucial position is filled, Feyerabend expected continued infighting, which he defined as “the modus operandi of the system”. The parliament also voted to dismiss Lam from his post as police minister, according to state media, a move not originally in its schedule. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assigned Deputy Public Security Minister Tran Quoc To, 62, to temporarily head the ministry. – Reuters Thailand celebrates return of looted statues from US BANGKOK: Two statues smuggled out of Thailand, including a 900-year-old sculpture that spent three decades at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, were welcomed back to the kingdom in an official repatriation ceremony in Bangkok on Tuesday. A 129cm statue of the Hindu god Shiva, dubbed “Golden Boy”, was repatriated after being linked to British-Thai art dealer Douglas Latchford, who was charged with trafficking looted relics from Cambodia and Thailand shortly before he died in 2020. The statue, displayed in the Met from 1988 to 2023, was discovered near the Cambodian border during an archaeological dig at Prasat Ban Yang ruins more than 50 years ago. It is believed to have been smuggled out of Thailand by Latchford in 1975. A second bronze sculpture, a 43gm kneeling female figure with her hands above her head in a Thai greeting posture dubbed “Kneeling Woman”, was also returned after it was linked to Latchford. The return of the items comes as a growing number of museums discuss steps to repatriate looted artworks. “We are honoured to get these artefacts back, they shall be located in their motherland permanently,” the directorgeneral of Thailand’s Fine Arts Department Phnombootra Chandrachoti said at the repatriation ceremony at the National Museum in Bangkok. “However, the effort of returning looted objects doesn’t end here,” he told a news conference later. “We aim to get them all back.” The two statues are part of 16 sculptures due to be returned to Cambodia and Thailand by the Met, which said in a December statement that it is “removing from its collection all Angkorian sculptures known by the museum to be associated with the dealer Douglas Latchford”. US ambassador to Thailand Robert F Godec said the return of the statues would strengthen cultural ties between the two countries. “We are pleased to support the preservation of Thai history and to strengthen our cultural ties. Welcome home ‘Golden Boy’ and ‘Kneeling Woman’!” Godec wrote on X. – AFP ‘Plane made dramatic drop, people flung upwards’ SINGAPORE: There was little warning of the chaos that was to come as passengers on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 relaxed with just three hours to Singapore after a long haul flight from London. But as the Boeing 777-300R soared above Myanmar, it suddenly hit extreme turbulence, wildly throwing passengers, flight attendants and inflight meals and kettles around the cabin. “Suddenly, the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking,” said Malaysian student Dzafran Azmir. One passenger died of a suspected heart attack and at least 30 were injured after the flight encountered what the airline described as sudden extreme turbulence around 10 hours into the journey as it flew over the southern tip of Myanmar. The flight had “a rapid change in vertical rate, consistent with a sudden turbulence event” at 0749 GMT (3.49pm in Malaysia), flight data provider FlightRadar 24 said. “The entire thing happened within 10 seconds,” Dzafran said. “People dropped to the ground, my phone flew out of my hand and went a couple aisles to the side, people’s shoes flung about.” Oxygen masks hung down from the plane’s ceiling, sections of which had fallen down or been dented and broken. Debris, including fruit salad, kettles and trays of in-flight meals, was strewn about the cabin, eyewitness footage showed. Turbulence – or pockets of disturbed air – can have many causes. Singapore Airlines did not say what type was involved. Weather reports show severe thunderstorms in the area. “It was cloudy outside, completely white,” Dzafran said. The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the plane to Bangkok, landing around an hour later, and was met by ambulances and emergency personnel. “The crew and people inside lavatories were hurt the most,” Dzafran said. Emergency crews lifted injured passengers over their heads on stretchers down the narrow aisles, while other passengers remained seated. As a passenger filmed others disembarking, a voice can be heard saying: “There are still people on the ground.” Medical tents were set up on the tarmac to examine the injured. THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 8 @thesundaily FOLLOW ON Malaysian Paper INSTAGRAM French president flies to New Caledonia NOUMEA: President Emmanuel Macron yesterday flew to France’s Pacific territory of New Caledonia in a bid to defuse a political crisis after nine days of riots have killed six people and injured hundreds. Macron’s sudden decision to fly across nine time zones to the southwest Pacific archipelago, located some 17,000km from mainland France, is a sign of the gravity with which the Paris government views the crisis. New Caledonia, colonised by France in the second half of the 19th century, and other French overseas territories spanning the world’s oceans are an integral part of French territory. But there have long been tensions between the Paris government and pro-independence voices among New Caledonia’s indigenous Kanak population. France has also been concerned about foreign interference in the crisis – accusing Azerbaijan of stirring trouble – and New Caledonia’s government said an “unprecedented” cyberattack on an internet provider for the territory had been launched. Macron plans to “listen to, talk and hold discussions with New Caledonian elected officials” in an attempt to restore order, said a presidential aide, asking not to be named, in Paris. He wants to “give answers to the many legitimate questions Caledonians are asking, both on the reconstruction side and the political side”, the official said. The deadliest unrest in four decades was sparked by French plans to give voting rights to thousands of non-indigenous residents, which Kanaks say will dilute their votes. French authorities sent more than 1,000 troops, tactical police and national security reinforcements from Paris in a bid to quell the violence. But unrest is ongoing, albeit not on the scale of last week. – AFP B R I E F SBEIJING FREES CITIZEN JOURNALIST ZHANG ZHAN SHANGHAI: Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan has been released from prison after serving four years for her coverage of Beijing’s Covid-19 response, according to a video released by media watchdog Reporters Without Borders. Zhang, a former lawyer, travelled to the central city of Wuhan in February 2020 to report on the chaos at the pandemic’s epicentre, questioning the authorities’ handling of the outbreak in her smartphone videos. She was detained in May 2020 and sentenced seven months later to four years in jail for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”. “Police released me from prison at five in the morning on May 13 and sent me to my older brother’s home in Shanghai,” Zhang said. “Thank you everyone for your help and concern.” – AFP TORNADO REDUCES SMALL IOWA TOWN TO RUBBLE LOS ANGELES: A powerful tornado ripped through a small Iowa town on Tuesday, killing multiple people and leaving at least a dozen injured. Images from the town of Greenfield show a path of utter destruction, with homes reduced to splinters, debris strewn everywhere and several large wind turbines toppled. “This tornado has devastated a good portion of this town,” said Sgt Alex Dinkla, a spokesperson with the Iowa State Patrol. He did not provide a death toll. At least a dozen people in Greenfield, a town of about 2,000 people, were injured in the twister. Because the local hospital sustained damage in the storm, those people had to be transferred to facilities in nearby towns. Earlier, Beijing said it had complained to the United States over Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulating Taiwan on Lai’s swearing-in. China considers self-ruled Taiwan part of its territory and has branded Lai, who was sworn in on Monday, as a “dangerous separatist”. In his speech on Monday, Lai said a “glorious era of Taiwan’s democracy has arrived” and thanked citizens for “refusing to be swayed by external forces, for resolutely defending democracy”. oStatement does not spell out retaliatory measures “Yesterday’s speech ... can be described as a downright confession of Taiwan independence,” a statement from Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) released late Tuesday read. It added that “(China) must take countermeasures and penalise the DPP authorities for colluding with external forces in their provocations for independence”. The statement, attributed to TAO spokesperson Chen Binhua, did not specify what retaliatory measures from Beijing would entail. Chinese warplanes and naval vessels maintain a presence around the island, but in recent days, there has not been a significant uptick in the numbers. “I would like to emphasise that no matter what (Lai) says or how he says it, it will not change the status and fact that Taiwan is a part of China ... The complete reunification of the motherland must be realised and can certainly be realised,” Chen said. Also on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Taiwan “separatists will be nailed to the pillar of shame in history”, according to a statement published by the ministry. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, when nationalists fled to the island following their defeat by communist forces in the Chinese civil war on the mainland. Washington switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979, but it has remained Taiwan’s most important partner and biggest arms supplier. Blinken said in his congratulations message that he looked forward to Washington and Taipei maintaining “peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait”. Beijing said on Tuesday his message “seriously violates the One China principle ... and sends a wrong signal to separatist forces”. “We are strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed to this, and have lodged stern representations with the United States,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a regular news conference. – AFP Australia reports first human avian flu infection SYDNEY: Australia reported its first human case of avian influenza yesterday in a child who authorities said had been infected in India but made a full recovery, while a different highly contagious strain was found on an egg farm. The H5N1 strain of avian flu has swept the globe in recent years, killing billions of farmed and wild birds and spreading to tens of mammal species. Health authorities in Victoria said contact tracing had not identified any further cases and there was a very low chance of others becoming infected as the flu does not easily spread between people. “This is the first confirmed human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Australia,” said Dr Claire Looker, the state’s chief health officer. It was the first instance of detection of the H5N1 strain in a person or animal in the country. “The child experienced a severe infection but is no longer unwell and has made a full recovery.” The case in Victoria involves an H5N1 virus, but the strain is not the same as those responsible for outbreaks in the United States, Looker said. A farm worker in Texas tested positive for the virus earlier this year as it spread through the US cattle herd. Australia is the only continent where animals have so far stayed free of the H5N1 avian influenza virus, but authorities said a different strain of bird flu had been detected at an egg farm near Melbourne. First laboratory tests showed that virus was an as yet unidentified H7 strain that probably came from the wild bird population and had been seen in Australia before, said Graeme Cooke, Victoria’s chief veterinary officer. Curbs were imposed on movement around the farm and the birds would be destroyed, he said. “This area does have a high density of poultry businesses, both egg laying and poultry meat,” Cooke told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio. “At this stage we can’t say whether there’ll be any spread to other properties. We are now taking measures necessary to stamp it out to remove any onward spread.” The outbreak presented no risk to human health, he said. – Reuters BASIC NEEDS ... THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 9 Blinken criticised over Israel policy WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken faced criticism from the right and left over Israel policy in Congress on Tuesday, with Republicans accusing the Biden administration of failing Israel and Democrats, saying it is doing too little to help civilians in Gaza. Furious protesters interrupted Blinken as he began his testimony before two committees in the Democratic-controlled Senate, calling him a war criminal and accusing him of involvement in genocide. At the first hearing, before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Blinken flinched from a protester who approached him from behind, waving a sign that said “criminal”, before security officers carried her out of the room. Blinken reiterated the support of President Joe Biden’s administration for Israel, but insisted it was focused on easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and opposed an Israeli assault on Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza where over one million displaced people have taken shelter. Blinken appeared later on Tuesday before the Senate appropriations subcommittee, which oversees diplomatic and foreign aid spending. He returns to Capitol Hill for two more rounds of testimony at hearings of the Republican-led House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and a House appropriations subcommittee. Republicans criticised Biden for saying this month that he would delay a shipment of bombs to Israel and consider withholding others if Israeli forces launched a major invasion of Rafah. Billions of dollars in US military assistance remain in the pipeline for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Republicans also called for action in response to the International Criminal Court prosecutor’s announcement that he had requested arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his defence minister over alleged war crimes in the Gaza conflict. The prosecutor, Karim Khan, also sought arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders. – Reuters B R I E F SRUSSIA RETURNS SIX CHILDREN TO UKRAINE MOSCOW: Russia has returned six children displaced by the conflict in Ukraine to their families in a deal brokered by Qatar, TASS news agency reported. Ukraine believes Russia has illegally taken more than 19,000 of its children since the start of its 2022 offensive, of which fewer than 400 have been returned. The children – a group of boys aged six to 17 that included two brothers – were reunited with their families at an event in the Qatari embassy in Moscow. The event was attended by the Qatari ambassador as well as officials representing Russia’s children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, TASS said. Since July 2023, Qatar has helped bring back dozens of children taken to Russia and occupied territories during the two-year conflict, an issue that is highly sensitive in Ukraine. – AFP HONG KONG SPY CASE ACCUSED FOUND DEAD LONDON: British police are investigating the unexplained death of a man charged earlier this month with assisting Hong Kong’s foreign intelligence service. Police said in a statement they received a call from a member of the public on Sunday. The man pronounced dead at the scene in Maidenhead, southern England, was named as 37-year-old Matthew Trickett. Trickett, a former Royal Marine with a private security firm, was one of three men granted bail at a May 13 court hearing after being charged with two offences under Britain’s National Security Act. The case has fuelled a diplomatic row between Britain and China. Britain’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador on May 14 to state that espionage and cyber attacks were not acceptable on British soil. The Chinese Embassy accused Britain of fabricating the charges. – Reuters Huge crowds in Tehran attend president’s funeral TEHRAN: Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers for late president Ebrahim Raisi yesterday as huge crowds thronged the capital Tehran for his funeral procession. Flanked by top officials, Khamenei said prayers over the coffins of the eight dead from Sunday’s helicopter crash, who also included Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. A sea of mourners filled the open space around Tehran university, where the prayers were held before the funeral procession moved on to Enghelab and Azadi squares. State television said Raisi, who had been widely seen as Khamenei’s most likely successor as supreme leader, had received a “million-fold farewell” from the people of Tehran. “We have lost a prominent personality. He was a very good brother. He was an efficient, competent, sincere and serious official,” Khamenei told visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh joined the procession, as did the deputy leader of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem. “I say once again ... we are sure that the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its support for the Palestinian people,” Haniyeh told the crowd. In the capital, huge banners have gone up hailing the late president as “the martyr of service”, while others bade “farewell to the servant of the disadvantaged”. Tehran residents received phone messages urging them to join the funeral procession. “I was sad, I came to calm my heart and calm the heart of the supreme leader,” said one mourner who gave her name only as Maryam and said she had travelled from Varamin, south of Tehran, to pay her last respects. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the move was aimed at accelerating efforts to secure a ceasefire in Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza. “We hope that our recognition and our reasons contribute to other western countries to follow this path because the more we are, the more strength we will have to impose a ceasefire, to achieve the release of the hostages held by Hamas, to relaunch the political process that can lead to a peace agreement,” he said in a speech to the country’s lower house. Israel launched its war in Gaza in retaliation for an Oct 7 attack by Hamas that killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages, by Israeli tallies. Israel’s operations in the enclave have killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Spain and its allies have spent months lobbying European nations, including France, Portugal, Belgium and Slovenia, to garner support for the recognition of a Palestinian state. “Today, Ireland, Norway, and Spain are announcing that we recognise the state of Palestine,” Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris said at a press conference in Dublin. “Each of us will now undertake whatever national steps that are necessary to give effect to that decision.” He added that Ireland was unequivocal in fully recognising Israel and its right to exist “securely and in peace with its neighbours”, and he called for all hostages in Gaza to be immediately released. In Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, said the only alternative for a political solution between Israelis and Palestinians is “two states living side by side in peace and security”. In response to the announcements, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz ordered the immediate return of the Israeli ambassadors to the three countries for consultations and warned of further “severe consequences”. “I am sending a clear message today: Israel will not be complacent against those who undermine its sovereignty and endanger its security,” he said. Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it would also reprimand the Irish, Spanish and Norwegian ambassadors and show them a video of female hostages being held in captivity by Hamas. Israel argues the only way to achieve Palestinian statehood is through negotiations and that bypassing this process would give Hamas and other groups an incentive to use violence. Around 144 out of 193 member-states of the United Nations have already taken the step, including most of the global south, Russia, China and India, but only a handful of 27 EU members have so far done so, Sweden being the first in 2014. The United Kingdom and Australia have indicated in recent months that they could soon follow suit. Palestinians seek statehood in the Israelioccupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as their capital. Israel’s staunchest ally, the United States, last month vetoed an attempt at UN recognition for a Palestinian state, arguing that a two-state solution can only come from direct negotiations between the parties. – Reuters Mourners hold posters of Raisi in Tehran yesterday. – AFPPIC launched, involving help from the European Union, Russia and Turkiye. State television announced Raisi’s death early on Monday. The Iranian military said yesterday that domestically produced drones had played a key role in locating the crash site. Funeral ceremonies for Raisi and his entourage began on Tuesday, with processions through Tabriz and the Shi’ite clerical centre of Qom drawing tens of thousands of black-clad mourners. From Tehran, the bodies will be taken to Iran’s second city of Mashhad, Raisi’s hometown in the northeast, where he will be buried today after funeral rites at the Imam Reza shrine. Khamenei, who wields ultimate authority in Iran, has declared five days of national mourning and assigned vice-president Mohammad Mokhber, 68, as caretaker president until a June 28 election for Raisi’s successor. Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri, who was Amir-Abdollahian’s deputy, has been named acting foreign minister. The country’s armed forces chief Mohammad Bagheri has ordered an investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash. Raisi was elected president in 2021, succeeding the moderate Hassan Rouhani at a time when the economy was battered by US sanctions imposed over Iran’s nuclear activities. The ultra-conservative’s time in office saw mass protests, a deepening economic crisis and unprecedented armed exchanges with arch-enemy Israel. After his death, Russia and China sent their condolences, as did Nato, while the UN Security Council observed a minute’s silence. Messages of condolence also flooded in from Iran’s allies around the region, including the Syrian government. – AFP
10 THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 READ OUR HERE /thesun Malaysian Paper Iran has topped the league NEWS of the demise of President Ebrahim Raisi and the foreign minister of Iran may have been received with heartache by the people of Iran and Azerbaijan, the place that he was to visit to inaugurate the grand opening of a new dam. However, the truth is that Iran has arrived at the world stage. With or without the complicity of the dark force of the Mossad or some elements within Iran, the fact remains that Iran is not experiencing any chaotic transition of power. Its state of armed alertness remains topnotch since the breach of Israel on Oct 7, 2023, and had gone even higher after Teheran delivered a serious and massive blow to Israel’s much-vaunted defence on April 14th, 2024. Instead of being perpetually accused of using Houthis, Hizbullahs and Hamas, a triage of sub-state groups, to undermine the security of Israel, the facts show that even the students from all the leading universities in the United States and the European Union, not excluding those in Austral Oceania, have risen against Israel. Surely Iran cannot be accused of planting anyone to trigger these feisty challenges against Zionism and Israel of the perfidious, albeit, pseudo-Judaic state? Besides, there are legions of Jewish groups, professors and human rights activists across the world that have challenged the very existence of Israel to impose its iron will on all who refused to roll over and play dead. Bethlehem and the NGO, “Not in Our Name”, is the best example. On April 14th, unlike the Israeli Defence Forces which claimed to be the “most moral army in the Middle East”, the Islamic Republic of Iran went for the jugular of Tel Aviv by focusing on its military targets. How? This was achieved mostly,by using a combo of drones, projectiles and cruise missiles, all of which were accurately arrayed against the military targets of Israel. The four water desalination plants of Israel north of Gaza were left intact. They were not even on the putative list of Iran’s targets. Teheran did destroy two of Israel’s militarygrade runways in the nuclear testing base of Israel in the Dimona Desert. Then again, this was a symbolic strike to demonstrate the ability of Iran to hit one of the most guarded possessions of Israel even though Iran and Israel had no shared borders and were divided 1,200km apart. What makes everything all the more remarkable is the sudden switch in the international profile of Israel and Iran. While the former i.e. Israel has been widely considered the pariah of the world – due to its combo of apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocidal campaign in Gaza and West Bank since 1948 – it turns out that Iran has been the most mature and rational state actor. The reversal of the roles could not have been more dramatic in the history of international relations. Thus, Ebrahim’s demise must be seen in the proper context. A leader and a foreign minister may be lost but in the coming state funeral, Iran will have a panoply of VVIPs attending the august and solemn event. Why? Prior to the retaliation against Israel on April 14, Iran was perceived as the “incorrigible bully” of the Middle East. Iran had to swallow hook, line and sinker, the unpalatable moniker that it was a rogue nuclear state; when Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei deemed the weapon to be unIslamic due to its destructive powers that cannot discriminate between civilians and combatants. A key tenet in the Sunni and Shia concept of war, Qital, for that matter is Jihad. Yet, for more than two decades at least, Iran has had the unfortunate misfortune of being weighed down by rounds of sanctions, leading to a thriving black market for anything – from children’s eyeglasses to valuable currencies. However, even if Ebrahim’s death is not mourned by few in Iran due to the differences in public opinion in the country, it is key to remember that everyone in the West now sees Iran as a rational strategic global actor. More importantly, Iran has less than 50 days to hold a fresh presidential election while the post of Ebrahim is quietly held by his vice president. There is no room for usurpation. A presidential election must be held. Iran, in the flash of a moment, has become more democratic than even the US, even though elections alone cannot be the be-all and endall of how the quality of democracy is measured. First and foremost, the majority must not exert its will over the minority. Jews and Zoroastrians continue to thrive in Iran. Secondly, there is a peaceful transition of power that is ongoing as the country mourns the demise of Ebrahim and other dignitaries. Just as importantly, Iran’s nuclear negotiations with the US, the UK, Russia, China and the EU remain on track in Switzerland. Insofar as its relations with the US are concerned, there is an Iranian hotline with and via Oman. Iran and Turkey’s relationship remains robust. Saudi Arabia and Iran have also reconciled their relationship with the help of China. Although the latter has been reported to break all its relationship with Israel, Teheran is not goading Beijing to go even further than what China is permitted to do. Time and again, Iran has proven to be the sturdy enabler of regional peace. Over the last eight months, only one ship that belongs to an Israeli owner has been dragged back to Iran in March. Iran, for the lack of a better phrase, has become the singular provider of peace. Thus, while there are silhouettes of some macabre shenanigans that attend the downing of Ebrahim’s helicopter, granted that of the four choppers that went up, only his could not withstand the treacherous conditions to reach East Azerbaijan safely, the truth is more powerful than the lies: a new Iran has arrived. The fact that the wreckage of the helicopter was detected by the drones of Turkey and not Europe nor the US, based on the heat that was emitting from the cold and rain-soaked area north of Iran, implies the concurrent rise of Turkey too. Is it any wonder why the foreign policy of China and Russia have sought to be close to the two? For that matter, is it any wonder why Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysia to focus on the Asian Renaissance since the 1990s? Involving youths in shaping education policy IN today’s educational system, where policy shapes the future of the next generation, an important voice is often not heard: the voice of youth. However, as we delve deeper into the educational system, it becomes apparent that to improve it, we must move past the traditional ways of formulating policies, wherein including young people in the process is not only an aspiration but a necessity. Youth engagement and participation in shaping education policy highlights the essential role that young people can play in influencing education policies at the national and international levels. Youths are the leaders who will ensure that education accomplishes its intended purpose as an influence for good change, whether by encouraging an inclusive curriculum or switching from conventional to creative teaching techniques. Why is youth engagement in education policy-making so important? Firstly, young people can offer a fresh perspective on the current state of affairs. Their first-hand knowledge gained as students implies that their opinions are crucial to the development of educational policies and the improvement of educational systems. By actively including young people in policy discussions, we can ensure that educational policies are up-to-date, concerns are resolved and needs are addressed. Secondly, youth participation encourages young people to feel empowered and take charge of their education. Students can gain more independence when they are placed in an environment that values and respects their opinions since this allows them to take ownership of their educational journey. In addition, it can boost their interest and involvement, aiding in the development of other intellectual skills, including teamwork, leadership and problem-solving. Engaging youth in educational politics is the next important factor as it enables not only microeconomic changes but also profound social changes. By advocating for national minority groups and pursuing greater equity in education, the younger generation can Mourners hold posters of Raisi during a funeral ceremony for him. – AFPPIC COMMENT by Nur Nasya Dania Mohd Hatta COMMENT by Dr Rais Hussin be a key force in transforming society into a more democratic one. Through these resolute endeavours in civil rights activism and tireless efforts to influence policymaking, youths can compel the status quo to be questioned, speak up for structural change and consequently make a difference on the local, national and global levels of civilisation. However, youth involvement in policymaking will not happen spontaneously; it requires serious effort and commitment from all involved parties. Educational institutions, commercial investors, civil society organisations and relevant authorities must create effective platforms for youths to play a role in decision-making. This specifically refers to creating youth participation channels, facilitating projects tackled by young people and funding programmes that promote youth leadership development. Creating an atmosphere of communication, respect and harmony is also vital to garnering the opinions and involvement of youth in the decisionmaking process regarding educational policy formation. Merely urging young people to participate in policy discussions is insufficient; policymakers must genuinely consider their real thoughts, views and perspectives. In conclusion, involving youths in the process of forming education policy is not merely one of many priorities; it serves as the foundation for a system that is fair, inclusive and responsive to the needs of society. One of the greatest benefits of philosophy is the encouragement for young people to become active change agents in education, with the ultimate goal for them to reach their full potential and lay the foundation for a more prosperous and brighter future for all. ”We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” – 32nd president of the United States Franklin D. 11 THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 How Girl Guides transformed my life journey WHEN I was just over nine years old, my journey with the Girl Guides began. My mum enrolled me, influenced by Aunty Melor, one of the dedicated leaders of Girl Guides. Little did I know then how significant this decision would be. At that tender age, it was not just an after-school activity or a way to pass the time, it was an adventure that would shape my character and teach me invaluable life lessons. It was a time of discovery, where every meeting and event brought new skills and friendships, and developed a strong sisterhood mindset. Through this journey, I had the chance to connect with many inspiring icons. If you are progressive, you may even get the opportunity to travel internationally. Let me share another part of my journey, as you know life is not a bed of roses. The real challenges began when I embarked on the journey to achieve the “Anugerah Pandu Puteri Tunas” award. It was not an easy path – many sacrifices were needed, and tough choices had to be made. I had to maintain a detailed log, ensuring every aspect was documented meticulously. It was daunting at times but it taught me the value of perseverance and attention to detail. I vividly remember a moment with my friends (Raisa, Ameera, Hani, Irysaa and Dian) when we were all working towards our “Pandu Puteri Tunas” award. At that point in time, we promised each other that we would not pursue the “Pandu Puteri Anugerah Remaja” because the tasks ahead seemed too overwhelming. However, as we continued our journey, something incredible happened: all of us completed our “Anugerah Remaja” successfully. Can you imagine we had completed one decade of friendship, thanks to Girl Guides and all the dedicated leaders who kept us connected? Now, as we set our sights on the Queen’s Guide award this year, I am filled with pride and excitement. Each level has taught us something new. We have learned the importance of a growth mindset, the power of collaboration and the courage to be bold and vocal. Our self-confidence has flourished through these experiences. To all the girls out there, I encourage you to join Girl Guides. The journey will help you develop resilience and understand the importance of personal growth. Lastly, our heartfelt thanks go out to our Girl Guides leaders and teachers. Your guidance and support have been invaluable. You have not only led us but inspired us to become the best versions of ourselves. Resilience is born from facing challenges head-on and learning from each experience. In the company of friends and mentors, the impossible becomes achievable. Tanusya Manimuttu SMK Damansara Utama Unjustified assessment rate hikes spark outcry in Selayang THE Selayang Municipal Council (SMC) recently sent a letter dated April 1, 2024, regarding the increase in assessment rates for the following year. However, the Department of Valuation and Building Services did not dispatch the notice until May 10, the final day for residents to lodge protests. Strangely, despite some residents receiving the email, on May 11 (a Saturday), a postman was tasked with delivering notices to every household. Is this arrangement with Pos Malaysia special, and if so, who is covering the costs of this last-minute delivery? Although the deadline has been extended until the end of the month, many individuals are encountering challenges in submitting their protests against the increased assessment rates. This situation may resonate with the experiences of residents in other councils. The feedback forms are crafted in a way that complicates residents’ responses, despite the council merely needing to ascertain whether everyone agrees or disagrees with the rate hikes. With a quantum increase of over 50%, this is simply unreasonable. While SMC may argue that the rate has remained unchanged for many years, the current circumstances are not conducive to raising assessment rates. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, we continued to pay the same rate despite minimal work being carried out. Furthermore, SMC’s performance has been lacking over the years. I have resided in an area under its jurisdiction since 1997, during the tenure of its first president, Kasjoo Kadis. Until today, SMC has shown little improvement. Despite Selangor being under Pakatan Harapan since 2008, there has been minimal or no reform in the operations of local governments. Under DAP’s two-state exco, Ng Sze Han, and its current exco, Ng Suee Lim, SMC and numerous other councils have yet to undergo any significant overhaul. Despite having a minister in charge of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Meng, little to no mention has been made about reforming the Local Government Act. Unless Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim takes decisive action, politicians are unlikely to implement unpopular measures, even if they are what the people desire. We want to see improvement in the delivery of services by the third tier of government. If not, their directors should face a 20% salary reduction, similar to the ministers’ salary cuts. This is particularly crucial during these challenging times. Imagine campaigning for several years just to get the council to address steep humps that damage cars with lower decks, only to find that several other issues remain unresolved. Politicians claim these steep humps are at the request of residents, showing disregard for the damage they cause to vehicles. If Penang can effectively clean up its illegal dumps and Kuching can rank as the 15th cleanest city in the world, why does Selangor remain one of the dirtiest states in the country? Should we replace the individuals in leadership positions or consider changing the governing party in the upcoming general election? Stephen Ng Selayang Empowering poverty fighters THE concept of “multidimensional poverty” recognises poverty as a complex issue beyond financial or economic metrics. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted that the Madani administration is dedicated to addressing severe poverty, infrastructure development and essential utilities. With growing attention to the poverty issue and the idea of multidimensional poverty becoming more popular, it is imperative that stakeholders receive the necessary training to guarantee that the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is successfully comprehended, used and applied in policy and decision-making. This will enable significant and long-lasting initiatives to address multidimensional poverty in Malaysia. To combat poverty, training programmes based on the MPI should be developed to give individuals and organisations the knowledge, tools and capacities necessary to comprehend and tackle the complexities of poverty that extend beyond income-based measures. In this regard, training goals may improve participants’ comprehension of multidimensional poverty ideas, give them tools for analysing and interpreting data and enable them to effectively use the MPI in interventions and policymaking. Given this, a well-thought-out plan will ensure that the training material is suited to the target audience and their responsibilities in combatting poverty, making it easier to choose the pertinent subjects and approaches that will be helpful to the participants. Therefore, one of the training strategies must involve the team conducting a needs assessment. This entails determining the training’s target audience (for example, government officials, NGOs and researchers), ascertaining their current knowledge and proficiency levels about multidimensional poverty and defining the particular domains in which training is needed. Workshops are one way to conduct training. Interactive and participatory techniques are promoted to actively involve individuals. It is hoped that the MPI’s impact may be maximised by information dissemination and capacity building through training, which will result in more specialised and focused actions addressing poverty’s unique aspects. The Multidimensional Poverty Training Plan and Strategy seeks to establish a solid base of knowledge and experience among stakeholders to effectively confront poverty from a multidimensional viewpoint. The plan should be adaptive and responsive to the changing demands and obstacles of poverty reduction initiatives. It should enable participants to make well-informed decisions and implement evidence-based policies that result in significant and long-lasting poverty alleviation. Extensive and productive stakeholder interaction is crucial for the MPI’s successful implementation. When customising interaction tactics, various stakeholder groups’ distinct priorities, viewpoints and interests should be considered. While NGOs and community leaders can be more concerned about the impact on grassroots activities and local empowerment, policymakers will need information on policy implications and how the MPI may influence data-driven decision-making. This engagement creates a sense of ownership, commitment and accountability and guarantees that the MPI matches their needs and goals. Inclusionary and interactive stakeholder engagement is essential for every project but it becomes more critical when the MPI is executed. Therefore, including stakeholders in an inclusive way ensures that a variety of viewpoints, especially those marginalised and disadvantaged groups, are considered. This inclusion aids in identifying metrics that accurately reflect the unique hardships that various demographic groups experience. On the other hand, participatory involvement guarantees that the features that have been selected are pertinent to the local context and considerate of cultural norms, values and customs. Communities are more likely to connect with the dimensions, and governments are more willing to support them. Thus, stakeholders’ combined efforts will help to provide more sophisticated knowledge of practical and focused measures for reducing poverty. This knowledge’s multifaceted nature will ultimately enable practitioners and politicians to create focused and practical solutions. He pointed out that the ongoing partnership between Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and BMCC could be a key driver in advancing both nations’ bilateral trade relationships in the digital space. Since the roundtable session in February, significant progress has been made on the identified action items. These include the partnership between MDEC, BMCC and the British High Commission for the Malaysian trade mission in conjunction with London Tech Week 2024 in June. Additionally, there has been support provided to BMCC members regarding inquiries pertaining to the Malaysia Digital status of various companies. The group on Tuesday entered into a conditional subscription agreement with Advance Opportunities Fund VCC and Advance Opportunities Fund 1 (collectively, subscribers) to undertake the proposed notes. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Magma said the notes would mature on the date falling 36 months from the closing date of the first sub-tranche of the Tranche 1 Notes (proposed notes issue). The proposed notes issue would be issued in three tranches, subject to the terms and conditions as set out in the subscription agreement. The proposed notes issue is expected to raise RM30 million through the issuance of Tranche 1 Notes. An amount of up to RM70 million may be raised through the issuance of Tranche 2 Notes and Tranche 3 Notes, comprising RM2.5 million for each sub-tranche, at the company’s discretion. The proposed notes issue of RM100 million would be utilised for funding requirements, namely repayment of existing financing facilities, working capital and expenses relating to the proposed notes issue. “This is especially since the company was not able to proceed with the further drawdown of the previous RCN as it has almost exhausted the approved maximum shares to be issued under the previous RCN,” it said. The proposed notes issue is not expected to have a material effect on the earnings of the group for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2024. Barring any unforeseen circumstances and subject to all requisite approvals being obtained, the first sub-tranche of Tranche 1 Notes should be available for issuance by the fourth quarter of 2024 and the proposed notes issue is expected to be fully issued within three years from issuance of the first sub-tranche of Tranche 1 Notes. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (pic) highlighted that these reductions translate to cost savings of RM74 million. “Since its launch in 2011, the EMGS programme under the Asean Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) has provided support and encouragement for the implementation of sustainable energy practices and efficiency across various sectors. “This achievement goes beyond mere statistics, it embodies the collaborative efforts of stakeholders towards effective energy management and environmental sustainability. “These results signify proactive strides towards Malaysia’s sustainable future, aligning with the goal of attaining net zero greenhouse gas emissions,” he said during his speech at the EMGS Certificate Award Ceremony on Tuesday. Nik Nazmi said so far, 184 organisations nationwide have participated in EMGS certification, with the ceremony honouring 107 of them for their accomplishments with EMGS certificate awards. He said the organisations involved represent a diverse range of facilities spanning both public and private sectors, including hospitals, health laboratories, clinics, research institutions, educational institutions, banks, office buildings and industrial establishments. “This includes eight organisations receiving 1-Star certificates, 32 receiving 2-Star certificates and 67 receiving 3-Star certificates, with seven of these being renewals. “We also present special awards to organisations excelling in energy reduction and those showing strong commitment to the programme across their facilities,“ he said. Nik Nazmi stressed that efficient energy management is vital for mitigating climate change and promoting the country’s green economic growth. “As such, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, along with the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, and agencies like the Energy Commission and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority, are committed to supporting efficient energy management programmes. “This aligns with the targets in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2016-2025, National Energy Policy 2022-2040 and National Energy Transition Roadmap.” – Bernama CIMB forecasts mid-June kickoff for fuel subsidy rationalisation KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Investment Bank Bhd anticipates the rollout of fuel subsidy rationalisation to commence in mid-June at the earliest. This projection aligns with the government’s recent indication that the rationalisation will begin with diesel, it said in a note yesterday. “The implementation date was not stated, though we understand that registrations for the diesel fleet card system are due to be in the next month, putting June as the earliest start date. “Considering the application process for the fleet card, we expect the rollout to take place in mid-June at the earliest,” it said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a national address on Tuesday, announced the Cabinet’s decision to initiate fuel subsidy rationalisation, starting with diesel. However, specific timelines have not been disclosed, pending announcements from the relevant ministries. To recap, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali stated in February plans to implement targeted diesel subsidies by June. The expected savings from diesel subsidies are estimated at RM4 billion, equivalent to 0.2% of gross domestic product (GDP) per annum. CIMB Investment Bank outlined the two application levels under the subsidised diesel control system (SKDS) 2.0. These include an application to the Domestic Trade Ministry for authorisation, with approvals taking up to two days, and an application to oil firms for fleet card issuance, estimated to require up to four weeks. The SKDS 2.0 application process for companies operating nine types of goods transport vehicles commenced on March 7 and has since expanded to an additional 14 types of commercial vehicles as of May 13. “At this stage, it remains unclear whether eligible individuals owning diesel-powered vehicles will need to apply for cash aids, or if the government will utilise information from the Padu database,” the note added. Padu is a repository for storing information on utilities and related details. – Bernama Topmix records RM19m in revenue SKUDAI: ACE Market-listed total surface decorative products company Topmix Bhd recently released its first quarter financial results for the period ended March 31, 2024. Meanwhile, the gross profit (GP) for the quarter under review stood at RM6.9 million, representing a healthy GP margin of 35.9%. After incurring one-off IPO listingrelated expenses of approximately RM0.8 million, Topmix recorded a profit after tax (PAT) of RM1.3 million in the first quarter. Of which, the group’s effective tax rate in the first quarter was at 40.2%, higher than the statutory tax rate, primarily due to the incurred listing expenses and certain non-deductible expenses.

The PBT of the renewable energy division rose 0.3% to RM88.8 million, the packaging division’s PBT expanded by 17.6% to RM8.6 million, and the resources division posted a 150.3% surge in PBT to RM14.4 million. Revenue fell to RM313.48 million from RM347.35 million previously, Mega First said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia. “Excluding revenue of Tawau power plant (disposed of in May 2023), group revenue registered a 5.6% year-on-year increase to RM313.5 million (1Q 2023: RM296.9 million) underpinned mainly by higher sales contribution from the renewable energy division (up 7.2% to RM137.7 million) and the resources division (up 14.2% to RM63.8 million).” The group said normalised profit after tax and non-controlling interest (PATNCI) (excluding share of joint venture and associates’ earnings and one-off, nonoperational items) increased by 22.4% year-on-year to RM97.4 million in 1Q 2024 from RM79.5 million a year earlier. “This growth reflects the underlying strength of the group’s core businesses and the impact of acquiring an additional 15% effective equity stake in Don Sahong Power Co Ltd (which operates a hydropower plant in Laos) at the end of 2023. “We expect this growth momentum in normalised PATNCI to continue for the remaining quarters of the year, driven by expected improved earnings performance across all three core businesses.” The board declared a second and final dividend of 4.25 sen per share for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2023, on Feb 28, 2024, and payable to entitled LBS delivers steady financial performance shareholders on April 19, 2024. – Bernama PETALING JAYA: LBS Bina Group Bhd, a developer guided by people-first values, reported a profit after tax and non-controlling interests (PATMI) of RM30.53 million, supported by a revenue of RM342.1 million for its unaudited financial results for the first quarter of the financial year ending Dec 31, 2024 (Q1FYE2024). Compared to last year’s Q1 PATMI of RM30.5 million, this year’s Q1 result demonstrates consistency in financial performance, highlighting robust financial health and effective business strategies. In a press statement, it said that the property development segment, constituting 96% of the group’s total revenue, predominantly derived from its key development projects within the Klang Valley, including LBS Alam Perdana, KITA @ Cybersouth, Prestige Residence and Idaman. Significantly, this segment experienced a notable 19% growth in its PAT, achieving RM42.6 million. Commenting on the financial performance, LBS group executive chairman Tan Sri Dr Lim Hock San said: “Our operational efficiency and cost optimisation efforts are evident in the improved PATMI margin, rising from 8% to 9% in the quarter under review. This signifies a progressive step towards maintaining a steady profit margin.” Reflecting LBS’s strategic expansion and dedication to enhancing the property landscape, the group has launched three major projects with a combined value of RM1.12 billion. The launches include BSP Sutera Apartment and Townhouse (RM207 million) in Bandar Saujana Putra, SkyRia Service Apartment (RM265 million) in Puchong and Alam Perdana Central Hub (semi-detached factories and terrace factories) in Alam Perdana, contributing a total of RM648 million. Lim said that the semi-detached and terrace factories at the recently launched Alam Perdana Central Hub, have seen a 50% take-up rate. “Serving as the central industrial element, this allows us to capitalise on the growing logistics and warehousing sectors, which are predominantly fuelled by the surge in e-commerce.” As a developer wh has predominantly operated in the residential and commercial segments, he said Alam Perdana Central Hub factories reflect LBS Bina’s ability to recognise and seize adjacent opportunities in the industrial segment. “This is driven by Malaysia’s strong market demand and rise in investments in the manufacturing, logistics, and technology sectors, all of which require specialised industrial spaces,” Lim said. “With the right timing and strategic positioning, we are leveraging our expertise in property development to create tailored industrial spaces that cater to the evolving needs of businesses. “These new launches are expected to contribute positively over the next three years.” KUALA LUMPUR: Pos Malaysia Bhd, the national post and parcel service provider, reported an increase of group revenue by 2% to RM492 million for the first quarter of 2024, compared with the same quarter in 2023, and a further significant reduction in losses before taxation, improving by 37% from RM24.3 million in Q1 2023 to RM15.4 million in Q1 2024. “In the first quarter of 2024, we experienced an uptick in earnings primarily attributed to the enhanced performance of our mail and parcel services,” Pos Malaysia group CEO Charles Brewer said (pic). “Compared to the same period in 2023, both segments saw an increase in volumes, signifying a very positive trajectory for our business. “Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the weaker market, continued intense competition in the parcel market, and digitalisation trends impacting foot traffic and mail volumes, Pos Malaysia remains committed to delivering on its aspirational and exciting transformation journey.” He added that the company is accelerating the execution of its margin-led strategy, which includes plans to open an additional 40 new Pos Shop outlets in 2024, rapidly scaling both their fulfilment and international business as well as launching a SaaS business unit, which will provide market-leading digital solutions for both the post and parcel sector and new focus industries. “Whilst the traditional mail and parcel market continues to present challenges, we will remain Mega First Q1 earnings rise 35% to RM95 million oQ1 revenue up year-on-year, losses further reduced Lim expects the new launches to contribute positively over the next three years. KUALA LUMPUR: Lagenda Properties Bhd (LBP) will purchase three plots of freehold land in Kuala Muda, Kedah, for RM148.98 million. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, LBP said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Blossom Eastland Sdn Bhd, has entered into a sale and purchase agreement with Hock Lean Rubber Estate Sdn Bhd to acquire the plots of land totalling 346ha. It said the proposed acquisition presents an opportunity for the group to augment land resources to enhance LPB’s presence in Kedah as a property developer in the niche segment of affordable township development. “Given the location of the subject lands near the Kedah-Penang border, this proposed acquisition allows LPB Group to further capitalise on high buyer demand from Kedah and Penang as showcased by the high demand for the group’s Darulaman Lagenda development.” It said the lands’ strategic location near the Kedah-Penang border is poised to drive the potential development of a large-scale affordable housing township to generate sustainable earnings over the development horizon. – Bernama Lagenda Properties acquires three plots of land in Kedah

The consolidated revenue of RM238 million represents a quarter-on-quarter growth of 43%, as compared to the preceding quarter’s revenue of RM166 million. This was driven principally by the recovery in deliveries of fertilisers following the end of the monsoon season. Accordingly, the group achieved a net profit of RM4.7 million in the current quarter. This is in contrast to the preceding quarter’s loss of RM12.7 million which was due to the one-off goodwill impairment of RM14.4 million. Group managing director Benny Ang said that sales volume for fertilisers is making a satisfactory recovery from the preceding quarter which had been affected by the monsoon season. However, he added the softening of fertiliser prices and geopolitical issues in the global market remain a major concern for the current year’s performance. Having said that, he said that their industrial and consumer division is making a strong comeback with revenue increasing by almost three times to RM42.3 million from RM14.5 million achieved in the corresponding quarter of financial year 2023. The significant increase in revenue is principally due to the consolidation of the results of our newly acquired subsidiaries Pacific Office (M) Sdn Bhd and Hextar Mitai Sdn Bhd (HMSB) in the last quarter of 2023. Accordingly, this business division recorded a net profit of RM2.9 million in Q1’24 from RM1.6 million achieved in the corresponding quarter of FY23. Meanwhile, group executive director Alex Sham said the newly added businesses of engineering solutions and office supplies are contributing positively to the group. The segment’s revenue contribution has increased from 7.5% in FY23 to 17.8% in the current quarter. In addition, HMSB successfully secured another project from the United Nations Development Programme in 2024 to construct a decontamination equipment and system amounting to US$2.55 million (RM12 million). Regarding the application to the Securities Commission Malaysia in relation to the transfer to the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd, Ang said that the application is progressing smoothly. It will incorporate technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will be designed to prevent flaring by reinjecting associated gas back into the reservoirs. Meanwhile, Petronas executive vice-president and CEO Upstream Datuk Adif Zulkifli said the FID represented a significant milestone in realising Petronas’ investment in the deepwater Kwanza basin in Angola. “We will work closely with our partners and host authority to seamlessly execute the project,” he said. – Bernama Crest Builder swings back to black PETALING JAYA: Crest Builder Holdings Bhd (CBHB) registered a profit after tax of RM0.7 million for its financial year ending Dec 31, 2024 (Q1’24), marking a significant improvement from the RM26.4 million loss incurred in Q4’23. This commendable performance was mainly due to high progress in construction recognised for construction projects. The construction segment continues to be the main revenue driver for the group, where it accounted for RM103.7 million, or 96% of Q1’24 revenue. In comparison with the preceding year’s corresponding period (Q1’23), the 70.9% surge in profit after tax to RM0.7 million was on the back of a 14.4% increase in revenue to RM107.9 million. Worldcoin launched last July and seeks to give users a private digital identity – a “World ID” – after scanning their unique iris patterns, but it has run into trouble in some countries over concerns about the use of users’ personal data. Hong Kong’s Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) said an enforcement notice had been issued telling the project to stop scanning and collecting iris and face images in the city. “The collection of face and iris images for (verification) purpose was not necessary, and excessive,” the PCPD said in a statement, adding that data leaks could lead to “grave consequences”. More than five million people have a “World ID” and 137 million of the project’s crypto tokens have been claimed in more than 160 countries, Worldcoin said last month. Its operation in Hong Kong had scanned the faces and irises of more than 8,000 people, the PCPD said. The privacy watchdog said Worldcoin breached multiple Hong Kong rules on the purpose and manner of data collection, and showed insufficient transparency. Failing to comply with an enforcement notice can be punished with a maximum fine of HK$50,000 (RM30,000) and two years in prison. Users were not given enough information to “make an informed choice or give real consent”, the PCPD said, adding that Worldcoin’s plan to retain data collected for up to 10 years was “prolonged” and “not justified”. The PCPD said its investigation involved 10 covert visits to six Worldcoin locations in Hong Kong beginning in December, followed by searches with court warrants. AFP has contacted Worldcoin for comment. The crypto project has been suspended over privacy concerns in countries such as Spain, Portugal and Kenya but it maintains that the personal data collected is encrypted and safe. – AFP Xpeng shares surge on service income, comments on self-driving tech SHANGHAI: Shares in Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Xpeng jumped more than 10% yesterday driven by revenue growth from research and development services offered to Volkswagen (VW) as well as upbeat comments about its goals for gains in self-driving tech. Xpeng, which deepened its partnership with VW last month to co-develop EV architecture, said that those R&D services were primarily responsible for its revenue from services nearly doubling to one billion yuan (RM648 million) in the first quarter from a year ago. That helped Xpeng’s gross margin climb to 12.9% compared with 1.7% a year earlier and 6.2% for the fourth quarter. “The company has paved the way with a new business model for intelligent technology sales to increase profitability,” Huatai Securities analysts said in a report. One of the most advanced Chinese automakers in smart EVs, Xpeng also said it expects to have developed capabilities for “level four” autonomous driving by next year, but added that it would take time for hardware and the regulatory environment to catch up. Level four does not require a human driver within designated areas. Very few automakers have developed level-four technologies, with most efforts to date confined to robotaxi tests in limited areas. Driver-assistance features now offered in China are “level two” systems, which require a driver to be ready to take over. Tesla’s “Full-Self Driving” and less advanced Autopilot option are also leveltwo systems requiring attentive drivers. Xpeng’s Hong Kong-listed shares were last up 12% in afternoon trade. It also said in its earnings call late on Tuesday that it expects second-quarter deliveries to rise between 25% and 38% from a year earlier. Xpeng added that it expects its mass-market Mona-branded EV, which will be priced under 200,000 yuan and go on sale next month, to offer level-two autonomous driving features. It will be the first Mona car on the road after Xpeng took over the project from ride-hailing giant Didi last year. Consumers of cars priced between 100,000 and 200,000 yuan are more likely to make use of autonomous driving functions, although up until now they have not been able to afford the technology, Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng said. “Once the cars are affordable, such consumers will be all over self-driving cars. And I do believe its next year, in 2025, we will see this become a reality.” – Reuters LVMH deepens partnership with Alibaba to boost presence in China SHANGHAI: French luxury group LVMH will deepen its partnership with Alibaba to leverage the firm’s cloud and artificial intelligence capacities and boost its presence in China, the companies said yesterday. The world’s biggest luxury group and the Chinese e-commerce giant first forged a partnership in 2019. The reinforced ties come as luxury companies redouble efforts to cater to shoppers in China, where demand has been dampened by a property crisis and high youth unemployment. The partnership also illustrates the growing focus of the high end luxury industry on improving online shopping, even as they invest in ever-more sophisticated physical retail stores. “The reinforcement of our partnership will help us to further accelerate our omni-channel business growth,” said LVMH group managing director Stephane Bianchi, referring to various shopping avenues both in-store and online. LVMH has around 30 brands on Luxury Pavilion, the high end site on Alibaba’s Tmall shopping platform, including jewellery houses Chaumet and Tiffany. Digital services there include 3D product displays, virtual try-ons, and live streaming. As part of the agreement announced yesterday, LVMH will also gain access to technology from Alibaba Cloud, to help improve supply chain processes and customer insights. – Reuters raised interest rates by 25 basis points in a surprise move to attract foreign portfolio investment and strengthen the currency. It has delivered a cumulative 275bp in rate hikes since mid-2022. The rupiah has recovered some ground after falling to four-year lows against the US dollar last month. However, the currency remains vulnerable to changes in global risk sentiment related to the outlook for US monetary policy and global conflicts. Warjiyo said yesterday the decision was in line with “pro-stability monetary policy” to manage price pressures and the rupiah exchange rate. “We think the rate hike of 25 basis points last month is sufficient to continue to attract inflows and stabilise the rupiah, while ensuring inflation remains within the target range,” he told reporters. The April hike was in anticipation of capital outflows if the US Federal Reserve does not cut rates at all this year, Warjiyo said. But recent data and statements by Fed policymakers have suggested that a rate cut by the end of 2024 is the most likely outcome, the governor said, stressing that other external factors have also improved since the April monetary review. Warjiyo said Indonesian monetary policymakers will remain data-dependent in their determination for interest rate policy. A Fed rate cut would open a window for BI to ease its own policy rate, said Capital Economics analyst Gareth Leather. “We think interest rates will be left unchanged over the next few months, but there is a good chance of a cut before the end of the year,” Leather said, adding that the timing would depend on the performance of the rupiah. Warjiyo said the rupiah is expected to stabilise with a tendency to strengthen, as Indonesian assets offer attractive returns to investors. Data earlier this month showed that Indonesia’s economy grew an annual 5.11% in the first quarter, the fastest rate in three quarters. The annual inflation rate eased slightly to 3% last month. BI kept its economic growth outlook for 2024 at a range of 4.7% to 5.5%, compared with last year’s 5.05%. – Reuters
BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 17 SEOUL: More than a dozen of the world’s leading artificial intelligence (AI) firms pledged at a global summit yesterday to develop and use their technology safely, as concern rises over the lack of safeguards for ChatGPT-style AI systems. Fourteen companies, including South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, sprawling tech giant Naver and America’s Google and IBM, agreed on the final day of the AI Seoul Summit to “minimise risks” as they push the cutting-edge field forward. “We commit to continuing to advance research endeavours to promote responsible development of AI models,” they said in the Seoul AI Business Pledge. The companies also promised to “minimise risks, and enable robust evaluations of capabilities and safety”. The two-day summit, co-hosted by South Korea and Britain, gathered top officials from global AI companies such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind to find ways to ensure the safe use of the technology. Their commitment builds on the consensus reached at the inaugural global AI safety summit at Bletchley Park in Britain last year. Under their new pledge, the companies also agreed to help socially vulnerable people through AI technologies, although it gave no details on how this would be achieved. Sixteen tech firms, including ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic, also pledged on Tuesday to make fresh safety commitments that included sharing how they assess the risks of their technology. That includes what risks are “deemed intolerable” and what the firms will do to ensure that such thresholds are not crossed. The stratospheric success of ChatGPT soon after its 2022 release sparked a gold rush in generative AI, with tech firms around the world pouring billions of dollars into developing their own models. Such AI models can generate text, photos, audio and even video from simple prompts and its proponents have heralded them as breakthroughs that will improve lives and businesses around the world. However, critics, rights activists and governments have warned that they can be misused in a wide variety of ways, including the manipulation of voters through fake news stories or “deepfake” pictures and videos of politicians. – AFP Nestle launches food for weight loss drug users ZURICH: Swiss food giant Nestle on Tuesday said it was launching products in the United States for users of increasingly popular weight loss drugs. The new Vital Pursuit brand is aimed at consumers of GLP-1 weight loss medication, which is used to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity, said Nestle, which owns products including KitKat chocolate and Nespresso coffee pods. Pizza, pasta and sandwiches at a suggested price of US$4.99 or less feature in the new range and will accompany users of weight loss medication by offering food rich in nutrients, protein and fibre, Nestle added in a statement. The group said the products, due to hit US shelves in the last three months of 2024, would help meet dietary requirements with portion sizes adapted to appetites that wane as people continue their treatment. According to the American Pharmacists Association, one adult in 60 was prescribed a GLP-1 medication in 2023 and the number is expected to rise this year, Nestle said. The drugs imitate a hormone secreted by human intestines which in turn stimulates the release of insulin and tames the appetite by producing a feeling of fullness. Popular brands like Ozempic and Wegovy have taken social media by storm due to their slimming properties to the point where some stocks have run out. The craze for such treatments has raised questions within the financial community about the growth potential of confectionery makers with products high in fat, sugar and salt. At its general meeting last month, Nestle came under fierce criticism from some investors who demanded the group set more ambitious goals regarding the share of healthy foods in its sales. – AFP oCompanies also agreed to help socially vulnerable people UK inflation slows to near three-year low LONDON: Britain’s annual inflation rate slowed to a near three-year low last month as energy prices cooled further, official data showed yesterday, easing a cost-of-living crunch before this year’s general election. The Consumer Prices Index slowed to 2.3% from 3.2% in March, the Office for National Statistics revealed in a statement, dashing market expectations of a sharper slowdown to 2.1%. April marked the lowest level since July 2021 when inflation had stood at the Bank of England (BoE)’s 2% target. The data comes after the BoE this month signalled a summer interest rate cut, after holding borrowing costs at a 16-year peak of 5.25% to further dampen price rises. The European Central Bank and US Federal Reserve are also moving towards cutting borrowing costs as global inflationary pressures subside. News of sharply lower inflation sets the scene for this year’s general election, as beleaguered British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives trail the main opposition Labour Party at opinion polls. “Today marks a major moment for the economy, with inflation back to normal. This is proof that the plan is working and that the difficult decisions we have taken are paying off,” insisted Sunak, who made cutting inflation a top priority. However, Labour finance spokesman Rachel Reeves slammed the Tories’ stewardship of the economy, which emerged in the first quarter from a shallow recession. “Inflation has fallen but now is not the time for Conservative ministers to be popping champagne corks. “Prices have soared, mortgage bills have risen and taxes are at a 70-year high,” Reeves argued. Prices are still rising on top of the bumper gains seen in recent years but at a far slower rate, with businesses and households weathering a cost-of-living crisis. That has been worsened by high BoE interest rates which ramp up the cost of loans. The International Monetary Fund cautioned on Tuesday that the BoE should be mindful of when to start cutting rates – or risk harming an economy recently out of recession. “We will likely see the BoE hold interest rates for a little longer,” noted ADSS senior market analyst Mahmoud Alkudsi. “This encouraging inflation data may be the tipping point for the BoE, but they will likely want to see this level of inflation sustained before relaxing their relatively tight fiscal policies.” UK inflation peaked at 11.1% in late 2022 and has decelerated sharply since then. – AFP Rakuten, eBay to test US market for used fashion goods TOKYO: Japan’s Rakuten Group is partnering with eBay to test US demand for used Japanese fashion goods, made all the cheaper with the yen trading near a 34-year low. The tie-up, which started on May 8 with just seven vendors on Rakuten’s second-hand goods unit Rakuma, aims to capitalise on the currency effect and also a move toward bargain hunting as cost-of-living pressures around the world crimp spending. eBay lists Rakuma’s selected goods through its site and handles shipping and customer service in the US in exchange for commissions on sales. The trial is starting with used fashion and accessories, which have cachet overseas due to Japanese users’ reputation for treating their luxury goods gently, said Rakuma general manager Kenichiro Hasegawa. “Because of the use of cases and covers and such, these second-hand goods are in quite good shape. “To say something is ‘used in Japan’ gives some immediate value.” The tie-up comes amid an investment and tourism boom in Japan, partly fuelled by the yen’s slide that has made the country’s goods relatively cheap. Second-hand stores, notably in Tokyo’s electronics district of Akihabara, have been swarmed by overseas customers looking to snap up vintage games and toys. Used and refurbished items make up about 40% of eBay’s gross merchandise volume. Global sales of “thrifted” clothing, shoes, and accessories increased more than five-fold in March 2024 from the year before, the company said. – Reuters AI firms pledge ‘responsible’ tech development South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol (centre) attending the virtual AI Seoul Summit. – AFPPIC / SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE VIA YONHAP
BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 18 Europe leads global AI regulation BRUSSELS: Europe’s landmark rules on artificial intelligence will enter into force next month after EU countries endorsed on Tuesday a political deal reached in December, setting a potential global benchmark for a technology used in business and everyday life. The European Union’s AI Act is more comprehensive than the US’ light-touch voluntary compliance approach while China’s approach aims to maintain social stability and state control. The vote by EU countries came two months after EU lawmakers backed the AI legislation drafted by the European Commission in 2021 after making a number of key changes. oThe EUs Artificial Intelligence Act surpasses US’s voluntary approach while China focuses on social stability and state control Citi fined £61.6m by UK regulators over trading, control failures LONDON: Britain’s banking and financial regulators said on Wednesday they had fined US bank Citigroup more than £61.6 million (RM368 million) for failures in its trading systems and controls. The fine is one of the largest for controls breache in the UK since the global financial crisis in 2008-2009. The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) said in a statement that problems at Citigroup Global Markets Limited (CGML) had “crystallised into trading incidents,“ including one in May 2022 when an “experienced trader incorrectly inputted an order” that led to US$1.4 billion (RM6.6 billion) being executed on European exchanges by mistake. “Deficiencies in CGML’s trading controls contributed to this incident, in particular the absence of certain preventative hard blocks and the inappropriate calibration of other controls,“ the PRA said. Citi had received “repeated supervisory communication” from the PRA to improve but weaknesses persisted, the regulator said. The PRA said it had fined Citi £33.88 million for failings in its trading systems and controls between April 1, 2018 and May 31, 2022. That fine had been reduced by 30% after Citi agreed to resolve the issue. The Financial Regulation Authority (FRA), in the same statement, said it fined Citi £27.76 million after an investigation into similar matters. “Firms involved in trading must have effective controls in place in order to manage the risks involved,“ said Sam Woods, CEO of the PRA and the Bank of England’s deputy governor for prudential regulation. “CGML failed to meet the standards we expect in this area, resulting in today’s fine.” Citi spokesman Victoria Durman said the bank was “pleased to resolve this matter from more than two years ago, which arose from an individual error that was identified and corrected within minutes.” “We immediately took steps to strengthen our systems and controls, and remain committed to ensuring full regulatory compliance,“ she said via email. – Reuters Nissan pauses EV sedan development in US, widens lineup BENGALURU: Nissan Motor Co has paused development plans for two battery-powered sedans while expanding its EV lineup to five vehicles in the US, the Japanese automaker said on Tuesday. “We are adjusting the timeline for the introduction of these five new models to ensure we bring the vehicles to the market at the right time,“ a Nissan spokesman told Reuters. The company’s new lineup for the US also includes batterypowered crossover SUVs. While Nissan’s electric sedans are still in the production plan, the company expects the SUVs to be rolled out faster than its sedans. The company also said its Canton, Mississippi factory would support manufacturing of its nextgeneration vehicles. The announcement comes as weaker-than-expected EV demand prompts global automakers to pull back from their ambitious electrification plans to focus on hybrids and gas-powered models instead. Additionally, demand for crossover SUVs and pickup trucks has outweighed sedans and other vehicle formats over the past few years, as Americans prefer the convenience offered by those platforms. In March, Nissan had laid out plans to accelerate its EV transition around the globe, including seven new models to be sold in the US by 2026 and an EV manufacturing hub in the country. Automotive News first reported that Nissan had paused US production plans for its first nextgeneration electric vehicles. Cryptos gain as investors turn optimistic on ether ETFs LONDON: Ether was set for its largest two-day gain in nearly two years on Tuesday amid speculation about the outcome of applications for US spot exchange-traded funds that track the world’s secondbiggest cryptocurrency, while bitcoin also approached a record high. Ether, which underpins the ethereum blockchain network, was 8% higher on the day at US$3,775 (RM17,701), its highest in two months, after jumping 13.8% on Monday. Top cryptocurrency bitcoin was last up 2.2% at US$71,000, around 4% shy of its March peak of US$73,803.25. The US markets watchdog will give its ruling on some spot ether ETF applications this week. Analysts and investors said Tuesday’s jump was a result of unconfirmed talk that the US Securities and Exchange Commission might approve these products after investors had previously thought they would be rejected. Bitcoin rallied sharply earlier this year after the SEC gave approval to several spot bitcoin ETFs, which have seen billions of dollars in inflows. So far in 2024, bitcoin has Ethereum is leading the recent crypto rally, just before the SEC’s deadline for the first ETH ETF decision today. – UNSPLASH PIX Concerns about AI contributing to misinformation, fake news and copyrighted material have intensified globally in recent months amid the growing popularity of generative AI systems such as Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Google’s chatbot Gemini. “This landmark law, the first of its kind in the world, addresses a global technological challenge that also creates opportunities for our societies and economies,” Belgian digitisation minister Mathieu Michel said in a statement. “With the AI Act, Europe emphasises the importance of trust, transparency and accountability when dealing with new technologies while at the same time ensuring this fast-changing technology can flourish and boost European innovation,” he said. The AI Act imposes strict transparency obligations on high-risk AI systems while such requirements for general-purpose AI models will be lighter. It restricts governments’ use of real-time biometric surveillance in public spaces to cases of certain crimes, prevention of terrorist attacks and searches for people suspected of the most serious crimes. The new legislation will have an impact beyond the 27-country bloc, said Patrick van Eecke at law firm Cooley. “The Act will have global reach. Companies outside the EU who use EU customer data in their AI platforms will need to comply. Other countries and regions are likely to use the AI Act as a blueprint, just as they did with the GDPR,” he said, referring to EU privacy rules. While the new legislation will apply in 2026, bans on the use of artificial intelligence in social scoring, predictive policing and untargeted scraping of facial images from the internet or CCTV footage will kick in in six months once the new regulation enters into force. Obligations for general-purpose AI models will apply after 12 months and rules for AI systems embedded into regulated products in 36 months. Fines for violations range from €7.5 million (RM38 million) or 1.5% of turnover to €35 million or 7% of global turnover depending on the type of violations. – Reuters gained 67%, but ether is now close behind, with a gain of 60%. “Ethereum has taken pole position in the latest crypto rally ahead of today’s first final SEC deadline to decide on an ETH ETF,“ said Ben Laidler, global markets strategist at eToro, using ether’s market ticker. “Outright approval is a long shot, but any guidance on a pathway to eventual acceptance would be a big step forward.” VanEck, ARK Investment Management and seven other issuers have filed with the SEC to list spot ether ETFs. The SEC must decide on VanEck’s and ARK’s filings, which are first in line, by May 23 and May 24 respectively Joseph Edwards, head of research at Enigma Securities, cited reports saying the SEC had asked exchanges that would list the ether ETF to update their filings and separate Bloomberg ETF research that showed analysts have raised their informal probabilities of approval. An SEC spokesman said they did not comment on individual filings. “Opposing the ETH ETF after the BTC one was approved always seemed like an odd case for the SEC to try to push unless they were willing to open up questions on Ethereum’s securities status more broadly, and it’s likely that the call has come in somewhere to not take that fight,“ Edwards said. Crypto markets took another leg higher last week after data showing a slowdown in US inflation drove a rally in risk assets. – Reuters
BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 19 Transformation of Malaysia’s venture capital industry THE World Economic Forum (WEF) had spotlighted in May 12, 2022 that startups are a catalyst for economic growth both globally and locally. The value that startups create is nearly on par with the GDP of a G7 economy and the amount of startup funding in 2021 surpassed US$600 billion (RM2.8 trillion), shattering funding records. The number of unicorns is well past the 1,000 mark and growing exponentially. In recognition that technology based businesses are contributing significantly to economic growth and national prosperity, governments worldwide are according priority to offer support and financing to this critical group of businesses. The government is strengthening venture capital financing and support for startups and tech based businesses via major initiatives – Malaysia Venture Capital Roadmap (MVCR) and KL20. Flashback to the mid 1980s The Malaysian VC industry was established in 1984 with the formation of Malaysian Ventures Sdn Bhd. Between 2000 and 2016, various VC guidelines were introduced to facilitate industry growth. Fast forward 4 decades later – 2024 April 1, 2024 ushered in a watershed moment for Malaysia’s VC Industry with the launch of MVCR 2022-2030 by Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) minister Chang Lih Kang. Mavcap had highlighted that it aims to nearly double its current RM758 million VC fund to RM1.4 billion growing the VC contribution to Malaysia’s GDP from 0.19% to 0.35%. As chairman of drafting committee of the report on enhancing VC financing in Malaysia 1999, it is with great interest that I follow the progress and development of VC/PE in Malaysia, including the launch of the MVCR and wish to offer the following recommendations for the government to further strengthen our nation’s VC/PE. Recommendations for the government 0 Select the best entity to promote and enhance Malaysia’s VC & PE In Malaysia’s 10-year Financial Sector Masterplan launched in 2001, one of the key recommendations called for the establishment of a one-stop centre to strengthen Malaysia’s VC landscape. 0 MIGHT Consultation 1997 themed Financing of High-Tech Industries in Malaysia in March 1997 Recognising the urgent need to introduce innovation in financing to spur technological innovation including new models of financing to support and grow tech based businesses, Malaysia Industry-Government Group for High-Technology (MIGHT) established in 1993 under the then Office of Science Adviser to Sophisticated investors criteria broadened – what investors must know LEGALLY SPEAKING THROUGH amendments made to the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA) and the Securities Commission Malaysia’s (SC) issuance of the “Guidelines on Categories of Sophisticated Investors” (Guidelines), the criteria and categories of sophisticated investors have been expanded. This took effect on Feb 5. Prior to this, there were three categories of sophisticated investors: Accredited Investors (AI); High-Net Worth Entities (HNWE); and High-Net Worth Individuals (HNWI). Under the Guidelines, the AI classifications remain unchanged and HNWE now includes statutory bodies legally established to invest in capital market products. The key differences of HNWI introduced by the Guidelines are as follows: Primary residence value A notable change involves the inclusion of an investor’s primary residence value, capped at RM1 million, in assessing their qualification as a sophisticated investor. The category of HNWI has been amended to categorise an individual as a HNWI if his/her total strengthen public private partnership for enhancing Malaysia’s high-tech ecosystem had organised a MIGHT Consultation 1997 themed Financing of High-Tech Industries in Malaysia in March 1997 with a keynote speech delivered by then minister of finance, now Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. MIGHT was instrumental in pioneering strategic initiatives to develop Malaysia’s VC industry via its report on enhancing venture capital financing in Malaysia, dated April 1999 following from the above event which was submitted to the Finance Ministry. I was honoured to serve as chairman of the drafting committee of this report outcome of the report. 0 First large quantum RM500 million allocated for VC financing – Budget 2000 announced in October 1999 The above report dated April 1999 had highlighted the critical need for additional VC funding to further support tech-based businesses . Budget 2000 announced in October 1999 had allocated RM500 million for Malaysia’s VC industry. A venture capital fund amounting to RM500 million announced in October 2000 for Budget 2001 was channeled to the newly established Malaysia Venture Capital Management Bhd (Mavcap) to provide venture capital financing for high-tech companies and it was mandated to develop the nation’s venture capital sector. In 2005, Malaysian Venture Capital and Private Equity Development Council (MVCDC) was established to deliberate issues and formulate recommendations pertaining to the VC/PE ecosystem and a task force was set up in 2016 to provide recommendations to enhance innovation via VC/PE investments. And recently as announced in Budget 2024, Khazanah has been tasked to spearhead the strengthening of the local venture capital (VC) ecosystem in collaboration with VC agencies such as Penjana Kapital and Mavcap. Thus there has been several initiatives by a variety organisations and/or structures set up or tasked with enhancing Malaysia’s VC/PE Industry. In view of that, Minister Chang Lih Kang had shared Malaysia’s aspiration to reach top 10 of VC/PE country attractiveness, it is imperative the government reviews international structures, oragnisations and or committees that have been set up for this purpose, in particular by the present top 10 VC/PE country attractiveness nations to identify the best model, structure or organisation for Malaysia to reach the desired ranking position. In view of the critical need to offer a comprehensive range of financing to support tech based businesses, from early phase, to expansion phase and right up to later stages and IPO, it is imperative the government shift its focus from not just strengthening venture capital financing, but instead to review the entire lifecycle of tech base business development and strive to strategise to strengthen other key financing sources including amongst others business angel financing, crowdfunding, private equity as well as debt financing or loans for targeted tech businesses including but not limited to IT, life sciences , drone tech and AI. As the Ministry of Economy under Rafizi Ramli is putting great efforts to support startups through several initiative including the KL20, cooperation amongst key ministries and private sectors could be better coordinated via a suitable organisational structure including maybe the special advisory committee to the finance minister steered by Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican. A sub committee or task force on innovation in financing to accelerate tech business development could be formed to ensure comprehensive suite of financing is available for tech businesses throughout their business lifecycle to further support and spur Malaysia’s economic growth and prosperity. Gross annual income and total net joint investment portfolio with spouse or child According to the Guidelines, the concept of joint has been broadened to include those of a child, for gross annual income and total net joint investment portfolio. A HNWI is defined as an individual who: 0 jointly with his/her spouse or child, has a gross annual income exceeding RM400,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies in the preceding twelve months; or 0 has total net personal investment portfolio or total net joint investment portfolio in any capital market products with his/ her spouse or child, exceeding RM1 million or its equivalent in foreign currencies. Qualifications, relevant working experience and membership associations In addition, SC has introduced three new categories of HNWIs under the Guidelines. A HNWI is defined as an individual who: 0 holds either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics/Actuarial Science, Accounting or a Master of Business Administration and has five consecutive years of relevant working experience in these sectors; or 0 holds the membership in the associations set out below: (a) Active Member of Chartered Financial Analyst Institute; (b) Chartered Banker of Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers; (c) Ordinary Member of Financial Markets Association Malaysia; (d) Chartered Accountant, C.A.(M) of Malaysian Institute of Accountants; (e) Ordinary Member of Malaysia Association of Tax Accountants; (f ) Accredited Angel Investor of Malaysian Business Angel Network; (g) Certified Member of Financial Planning Association of Malaysia; (h) Ordinary Member of Malaysian Financial Planning Council; or 0 has five years consecutive years of working experience in a capital market intermediary relating to product development, corporate finance, deal advisory, investment management, sales and trading, investment research and advisory, financial analysis, or the provision of training in investment products. Conclusion This regulatory step is designed to promote greater participation in Malaysia’s capital markets by allowing more investors to expand their investment options whilst enabling issuers to tap into a larger pool of investors and ultimately to ensure the capital markets remain robust, resilient, and responsive to the needs of an increasingly sophisticated and varied pool of investors. BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 20 Laundry industry poised for rapid expansion KUALA LUMPUR: The laundry industry is poised for rapid expansion and change due to various causes, including shifting customer preferences, technology improvements, and environmental concerns. According to market research, the Home & Laundry Care market is expected to earn US$1.14 billion (RM5.33 billion) in revenue in 2024. There is also a growing trend towards ecofriendly home and laundry care products, as consumers become more conscious of their environmental impacts. Local launderette, dobiQueen has successfully grown from five to 82 outlets within eight years of service since its establishment in 2015. “We’ve noticed various consumer patterns in Malaysian households, especially in the area of laundry. While work is a priority, many still come home to deal with dirty dishes and laundry. dobiQueen steps in as a service provider to help busy households lessen the load of household chores,” said dobiQueen co-founder and executive director Nini Tan. “Of this, 75% of laundromat users are women. Even in today’s modern era, women still handle the majority load of household chores,” added Tan. According to a Khazanah Research Institute time-use survey, women spend 63.6% more time daily on unpaid work than men, preventing women from investing time in full-time careers and formal jobs. Women who work the same hours as men in paid jobs, on the other hand, are not exempted from domestic responsibilities. After spending about 6.6 hours of paid work daily, women continue to perform an additional 3.6 to 4 hours on average for unpaid chores after office hours, leading to the “double burden” or “second shift”. With data derived from its proprietary mobile application that promotes ease of laundry experience through eWallet and online payments, dobiQueen has observed customer profiles from hundreds of thousands of downloads over the past eight years. The majority of its demographic consists of women with 50% in full-time employment, and 50% being homemakers. “The stakes are high for women. They are working hard to break the glass ceiling at work, but are also required to excel at home. Notwithstanding homemakers, who manage household chores, little ones in tow and more,” added Tan. As for the monthly usage per household, most households who utilise dobiQueen services usually earn an income bracket of RM5,000 and above. They spend a minimum of RM20 a week or RM80 a month on laundry expenditures. “We also observe that in terms of a regular wash, items comprised of daily clothes (80%), beddings (10%), towels (5%) and others (5%). “With larger items such as bedsheets, curtains and cushion covers, these are washed an average of once in three months or nearer festivities. Many households choose to wash these heavier items in one load, as dobiQueen has larger-sized machines that can cater up to 32kg of laundry,” Tan further added. In terms of time spent on laundry, one of the downsides of laundromats is the self-service options. One usually has to wait for laundry to be washed before manually transferring it to dryers, which can take close to two or three hours. “One of the upsides about dobiQueen is our investment in headcount for outlet supervisors. odobiQueen’s services let customers drop off their laundry and expect clean, fresh-smelling clothes back within a day IN TODAY’S economy, women are playing an increasingly pivotal role, challenging traditional norms and breaking barriers in industries once dominated by men. Over time, we’ve witnessed a significant shift, with more women championing roles that were previously considered exclusive to men. One notable trend is the growing presence of women in the phailing industry, defying stereotypes and reshaping the landscape of transportation services. As more women join the ranks of delivery partners and restaurant owners, they are not only driving economic growth but also fostering greater inclusivity and diversity within the workforce. International Women’s Day may have passed but it is important to recognise the invaluable contributions of female delivery partners and restaurant owners in the food delivery industry. Their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment play a pivotal role in shaping our platform and serving communities across the nation. The gig economy has witnessed exponential growth in recent years, with p-hailing jobs becoming an essential source of income for millions nationwide. Amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the gig economy emerged as a lifeline for individuals seeking financial stability and independence. In Malaysia, the gig economy has become a significant driver of economic growth, with over 100,000 new individuals participating and earning income via gig economy platforms in Malaysia as of Q3’23. This sector has provided income opportunities for a huge number of Malaysians, highlighting its substantial impact on employment and livelihoods. At foodpanda, we understand the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and succeed. Over the years, there has been a significant increase in women joining the gig economy as delivery partners. These women play a crucial role in facilitating the delivery of essential goods and services, enriching the lives of Malaysians across the country. Gig work has always been a great way for individuals to earn a supplementary income due to its flexible working hours. Many female riders now view it as a viable springboard to other industries or entrepreneurship opportunities. However, to fully harness the potential of the gig economy, it is essential to prioritise upskilling and professional development initiatives. This reminds me of Puan Rahayu, a 41-yearold mother of three, who transitioned from a school bus driver to becoming Bukit Jelutong’s first female foodpanda rider during the pandemic. Inspired by local riders, she found flexibility in the job, working for a couple of hours and having the flexibility to ensure she had time to balance her work and family. She is truly happy, especially knowing how customers value her delivery when she even got an RM100 tip from a customer, which is considered high for a foodpanda rider. Puan Rahayu is definitely not alone, we have similar stories from many wonderful women delivery partners out there. We prioritise the empowerment of our riders at foodpanda through a range of upskilling programmes and benefits. For example, we recently partnered with Manipal International University to provide our delivery partners with the opportunity to pursue tertiary education. This initiative allows our riders to enhance their skills and qualifications, opening doors to new career prospects and advancement.” Furthermore, we recognise the importance of language proficiency in enhancing job delivery capabilities and employability. In addition, “Panda Purpose”, is a programme designed to improve the English literacy skills of our delivery partners. By investing in their professional development, we aim to enhance the value of our workforce and ensure the highest level of service for our customers. By offering training and mentorship programmes, we empower our female riders and vendors to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Whether it’s navigating through bustling streets or managing their businesses, we provide them with the tools and resources they need to thrive in a competitive market. But our efforts extend beyond empowerment, they are about creating a more inclusive society where women are valued and respected for their contributions. By celebrating the achievements of female riders and vendors, we inspire future generations of women to pursue their dreams and break barriers. Let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering female riders and vendors in the gig economy. By providing them with the support, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all. Together, let us champion diversity, inclusion, and empowerment in the food delivery industry and beyond. This article is contributed by foodpanda Malaysia Interim CEO Pichaya Thongthua (pix). 1 in 3 Malaysians highlight payment fraud as top concern: Survey KUALA LUMPUR: Global analytics software firm Fico in its latest global consumer fraud research, revealed that 32% of Malaysians are most concerned about being tricked into making payment to a criminal, which exposes individuals to instant, irrevocable losses rarely eligible for reimbursement. According to Fico in a statement, the survey sheds light on Malaysians’ ongoing apprehension regarding real-time payment scams amid the growing adoption of new, convenient, and fast payment channels. Additionally, concerns about identity theft persist, with over 25% of Malaysians citing it as their top financial crime concern as this type of fraud carries additional risks beyond financial loss such as compromised credit scores and the challenging process of restoring financial integrity. Real-time payment scams are on the rise, with a concerning 76% of Malaysians having received unsolicited text messages, emails, phone calls, or other outreach that they believed to be part of a scam, while 54% of respondents stated that their friends or family members had been victims of a scam. Despite widespread concern about identity theft, there is a noticeable dissonance between perception and reality among Malaysians whereby about 32% believe it is unlikely they have been a victim, while 18% see it as possible, and 17% are confident their identity remains untouched. Moreover, only 7% of Malaysian respondents reported their stolen identity being used to open a financial account, an increase from nearly 6% in 2022. However, given Malaysia’s adult population, this 7% translates to over 1.6 million individuals. The survey was conducted in November 2023 with 1,000 Malaysian adults surveyed, along with 12,000 other consumers in Canada, the US, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the UK and Spain. – Bernama We differentiate ourselves by personally assisting customers with moving laundry from washer to dryer and then finally into the bag. Customers do not need to wait and can utilise this time to eat with loved ones or run other errands. “Outlet supervisors help load customers’ laundry which would be transferred to dryer machines and then folded. End to end, customers only spend one hour from the time they drop off and pick up their clothes,” Tan further elaborated. dobiQueen’s drive to innovate the laundry industry has seen many advancements where they have retained customers through its Dropoff & Pickup and 6-hour Express Delivery services where customers can leave their unwashed laundry to dobiQueen’s employees and anticipate receiving perfumed and well-fold laundry within a day. Innovation has also seen dobiQueen adopt pathways of sustainability and environmental responsibility. “We have implemented environmental laundry bags instead of plastic bag usage, motion sensor switches in all outlets to ensure energy is consumed when necessary, timer controls for all exhaust fans, air coolers and lights as well as investments into solar functionality,” Tan said. As for dobiQueen’s upcoming plans, Tan is confident of expansion plans with 5-20 outlets growth per year. Apart from growing the business, Tan emphasises mental health and well-being – focusing on “time to reconnect” with family and loved ones. dobiQueen also actively works with the B40 community to provide employment opportunities and support. “Laundry is mundane, and it is usually not spoken about much. But at dobiQueen, we salute the majority of women who keep the household going. Our goal is to reduce household chores for working adults and give them back precious time, which can be better spent with family and friends,” she added. In essence, the experience of reuniting with long-lost friends is a celebration of human connection. Whether it is through the click of a button on a social media platform or the serendipitous encounter with a familiar face, the bonds we forge with others have the capacity to enrich our lives in ways that defy explanation. So, let us cherish those reunions, embrace the memories they evoke and revel in the joy of rediscovering connections that time cannot diminish. Social media helps rekindle old friendships and bridge distances easily. Rediscovering connections Reuniting with old friends enriches our lives and fosters personal growth.

Carlsberg rewards footie fans with ultimate viewing party Each winner gets to bring three friends along for the staycation. In 10 episodes, X-Men ‘97 sets up a lot of characters and story arcs, and for the most part, it succeeds, with the season ending in a threeparter, titled Tolerance is Extinction, that brings everything full circle, while setting up future seasons. Vehicle for commentary For those with the media literacy skills of a toddler, X-Men ‘97 will certainly appear, in modern nomenclature, “woke” for its unabashed social commentary. For the rest of us, DeMayo’s application and transposing of reality into the series is par for the course. The X-Men, from their genesis on the pages of comic books in the 1960s, have always been a representation of social issues. In X-Men ‘97, the series is unsubtle with its writing, drawing a vivid parallel between its fictional issues involving humans and the friction with their evolved brethren, the super-powered mutants, with real world problems faced by different races, religions, nations and genders. “Under all that fashionable sympathy, normal people know the more room we make for your kind, the less we leave for ours. So we might wear tolerance on our sleeves, but we know the naked truth. Tolerance is extinction,” barks one of the series’ villains Henry Gyrich in an episode. A slight change in the wording for the antimutant sentiments in X-Men ‘97 and it could be mistaken as an incendiary speech often heard in the real world. Fatal attractions For all its social commentary and rhetoric, up to the final two episodes, there was an obvious flaw with the series. What was being shown was too sanitised and failed to match what was being said. Halfway into the season, Genosha – a sovereign island state for mutants – is attacked by Sentinels. Other than the covered bodies, rubble and tears, it was all too clean. X-Men ‘97 felt like it was being reigned in by Disney, forced to be family-friendly, but then it happens. At the end of the ninth episode, blood is finally spilled in strokes of brutal violence. Where were these moments of shock and horror earlier in the show? Minor nitpicks about the lack of violence aside, X-Men ‘97 is still a feat in how a series from 1997 has been successfully imported to 2024 with stellar voice acting, animation and storytelling as its foundation. X-Men ‘97 is streaming all 10 episodes exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar. ANY sense of worry due to the first trailer of X-Men ‘97 has been washed away now that all 10 of Disney’s latest Marvel series is out. A sequel to the original X-Men: The Animated Series that aired from 1992 to 1997, X-Men ‘97 is the invigorated and updated sequel for the modern 21st century. The series picks up directly where the original ended, with Charles Xavier’s “death”. Due to the loss of their leader, the X-Men’s team dynamic is thrown into disarray. Trained to lead the team, the line of succession temporarily falls on Scott Summers/Cyclops. The first episode ends with Erik Lensherr/Magneto appearing with Xavier’s last will, which bequeaths the metal-controlling mutant with not only the mutant school but also leadership over the X-Men. Elsewhere, a mysterious figure begins a mission to kickstart a global mutant genocide. Spinning an expansive tale Creator Beau DeMayo has constructed arguably the perfect follow-up to the 1997 series, and takes it to dark corners for such a brightly-coloured piece of animation. Though the initial episodes are centred on the friction between the X-Men and them having to follow the orders of Lensherr, who was a major antagonist in the original cartoon, the story line naturally becomes much bigger than their inner squabble. Viewers will go through a gauntlet of plot points, such as Jean Grey’s clone, the RogueLensherr-Gambit love triangle, the reintroduction of the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots, Lensherr’s inner turmoil over how he thinks humans will never accept mutants versus embodying Xavier’s peaceful ideals and so on. Blast from the past █ BY MARK MATHEN VICTOR Lensherr has the most character development in the new season of X-men ‘97. oX-Men ‘97 is the best project by Marvel Studios in five years For old fans, it is hard not to get excited when the classic X-Men theme song starts playing. – ALL PICS BY DISNEY

The great Spaniard, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, won his first title at Roland Garros as a teenager in 2005. A former world No. 1, who is now at 276 in the world, Nadal has only played 15 matches since January last year as a hip injury and then a muscle tear were added to a depressing history of physical ailments which have forced him to miss 12 Grand Slam tournaments in his career. Whether or not the 2024 French Open becomes No. 13 will soon become apparent as the draw for the event takes place today. “I’m going to play the tournament thinking that I can give my all, 100%,” explained Nadal after a second round exit in Rome last week. “And if 100% is not enough to win a match, I’ll accept that. But I don’t want to step onto court knowing that I have no chance. If there’s a 0.01% chance, I want to explore that and give it a go.” As well as 14 titles in Paris, Nadal can boast a record of 112 wins and just three losses, two of which came against career-long rival Novak Djokovic. He is also held in remarkably high esteem. At his first training session on Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros on Monday an estimated 6,000 people turned up to watch, many chanting his name. “We have to enjoy the time he has left on court, evaluate it, and be aware that it’s very unlikely that something like that will happen again,” said coach Carlos Moya during the recent Madrid Open. “Personally, I’m never on court when he enters or leaves, but I am this year because I like seeing the love he gets from the people when he steps on court. “He’s one of the great stars of this sport, he’s about to retire, and it’s really amazing to see that.” Nadal isn’t the only A-list talent under a Paris cloud ahead of the tournament start on Sunday. Defending champion and record 24-time Grand Slam title winner Djokovic, whose three titles in Paris, is enduring a title dry spell unseen since 2018. Adding injury to insult, he was hit on the head by a falling water bottle in Rome, a freak accident which he claimed caused nausea and dizziness. Between them, Nadal and Djokovic have carved up the last eight French Open titles while 2009 was the last time a final at Roland Garros did not feature at least one of them. World No. 2 Jannik Sinner, the man who succeeded Djokovic as Australian Open champion, has been laid low by a hip injury which caused him to skip the Rome Open. The 22-year-old Italian has an extra incentive to progress deep in Paris as he could depose Djokovic as world No. 1. Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning Wimbledon champion, also skipped Rome to nurse an arm injury. – AFP IGA SWIATEK admits she is the favourite and “confident” ahead of her bid to become only the fourth woman to win four Roland Garros singles titles in the Open era. The world No. 1 could also become the first player to lift three successive women’s titles in Paris since Justine Henin in 2007. Swiatek is a strong favourite after dominating on clay again this season, arriving in Paris off the back of WTA 1000 victories in Madrid and Rome. The only female player in history to complete a M a d r i d - R o m e - R o l a n d Garros treble in the same season is Serena Williams. But Swiatek is not daunted by what she could achieve. “I’m No. 1 so I’m the favourite everywhere if you look at rankings,” she told reporters after swatting aside secondranked Aryna Sabalenka in the Rome Open final last weekend. “But rankings don’t play, so… I’ll do everything step by step and we’ll see. “Obviously I am confident. I feel like I’m playing great tennis. But it doesn’t change the fact that I really want to stay humble and really focused.” The 22-year-old Pole has plenty of years ahead of her to chase records but is wasting little time – her four WTA 1000 titles this season have taken her career total to 10. That is already only 13 short of Serena Williams’ all-time record. With four Grand Slam titles, Swiatek has not struggled to translate that form to the major tournaments in the past, but insists it is tougher to lift the sport’s biggest trophies. “Grand Slams are different. There is different pressure on the court and off the court,” she added. “I love to come to Paris again and be there. It’s a great place for me to be. I really enjoy my time there anyway. These are hard seven matches that you need to win, so I don’t take anything for granted.” Swiatek is aiming to join Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Henin in lifting the Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen four times in the Open era. The biggest obstacle standing in her way is Sabalenka. The Belarusian has reached at least the semifinals in each of the past six Grand Slam events. She is also the only woman to beat Swiatek in a final on clay – in Madrid last year – since the Pole lost her first WTA title decider as a teenager in 2019 at a low-key event in Switzerland. Sabalenka has an 8-3 losing record against Swiatek, but insisted after Rome that she wanted to face her again in Paris. Sabalenka had never even reached the second week at Roland Garros until last year, when she was knocked out by Karolina Muchova in the semis. “I’m definitely not the favourite probably there,” she said. “But at the same time I do feel that I can actually go for it. “It’s 50/50, you know? But I prefer to be underdog. I really hope I’m going to make it to the final and I really hope I’ll be able to get that win, if it’s Iga or not.” – AFP Swiatek eyes place among greats Djokovic backs Rafa for French Open title NOVAK DJOKOVIC yesterday said Rafael Nadal was his favourite to win the French Open, despite the record 14-time champion struggling for fitness in the twilight of his career. World No. 1 Djokovic is tuning up at the Geneva Open this week before the second Grand Slam of the year begins in Paris. He said if Nadal was in the French Open draw, he could not be ruled out, despite his injury problems and growing competition from a younger generation. “This year is more open,” French Open defending champion Djokovic told reporters at the Parc des Eaux-Vives grounds in Geneva. “Casper Ruud is surely one of the five players who are candidates to win. You have Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas – all the players who won a major tournament on this surface this year. “But when you talk about Roland-Garros and Nadal is there, he is always the biggest favourite for me. “After everything he has done on the courts at Roland-Garros, it’s normal, respectfully to put him as the biggest favourite. “Obviously it’s a little different with his level of play. But it’s Roland-Garros, and it’s Nadal. “After that, maybe me, if I feel good, if I play well. At Roland-Garros, and all the Grand Slams, I am a bit of a different player.” Djokovic took a wild card to play in Geneva in a bid to rescue an alarming dip in form ahead of his French Open title defence next week and while time has caught up with 37-year-old Nadal, Djokovic said he was hungry to keep playing at the top. “I’m searching for my highest possible level,” he said. “It’s not an obligation. It’s truly my desire, my feeling, my passion, my love for tennis. That’s the most important. I’m seeking to stay connected with that feeling.” Djokovic said he knew Geneva well as he has cousins in the Swiss city, though he has never played at the Geneva Tennis Club before. “At this moment, there is no better practice for me than match play. So I feel like I need more matches,” he said. “That’s the way for me to try to find the kind of form that I need for Roland-Garros.” – AFP Rafael Nadal during a practice session ahead of the French Open. – REUTERSPIX Swiatek. – REUTERSPIX
SPORTS SPORTS THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 29 J URGEN KLOPP offered one last example of his skills as a motivator. He has proved time and again he can galvanise 11 people. He also had the best part of 60,000 in the palm of his hand, as he demonstrated on his farewell to Anfield. Getting them to sing the name of his successor, Arne Slot, constituted a seal of approval for Liverpool’s next manager, an attempt to smooth his welcome with popularity. For some, it may have had echoes of Sir Alex Ferguson’s words to supporters on the Old Trafford pitch 11 years ago: “Your job now is to stand by our new manager.” David Moyes lasted 10 months at Manchester United. Klopp’s skill set was to get footballers to deliver more for him than they had for anyone else. That becomes a challenge for whoever takes over from him. Three huge calls beckon, with captain, vice-captain and top scorer all out of contract in 2025. Virgil van Dijk, who has praised Slot and said he wants to stay at Anfield, is yet to receive an offer. The presumption is that Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a Liverpool lifer: the next captain, a local who has shown no interest in decamping elsewhere. Yet a unique talent’s age – 25 – makes him the greatest priority. Perhaps, though, Mohamed Salah could still produce the biggest fee if there is anything resembling a repeat of last summer’s £150 million (RM900m) offer from Saudi Arabia. At almost 32, with his 2024 performances perhaps lending themselves to evidence of decline, he presents the biggest dilemma. Meanwhile, the departures of Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are already confirmed. Perhaps Jarell Quansah’s emergence – further proof of how youth development is part of Klopp’s legacy – will mean Liverpool decide they don’t need a centreback, that they already have their new Matip. If a like-for-like replacement for the oftinjured Thiago may not be targeted, there is a greater case to search for a defensive midfielder. Beyond that, it will be instructive what Slot makes of some of the curiosities in Klopp’s squad. The German was largely excellent in juggling them but Darwin Nunez felt an £85 million (RM510m) enigma who ultimately defeated him. In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch displayed talent but delivered too little in his debut season. Dominik Szoboszlai was terrific in the first few months, less convincing in a stop-start spell thereafter. Curtis Jones had a brilliant three months in the middle of the campaign, Harvey Elliott a terrific end. A new manager may reshape the midfield pecking order. Elsewhere there is a theory that right-back Lutsharel Geertruida is the likeliest player to follow Slot from Feyenoord: if he joins, it may point to more appearances in midfield for Alexander-Arnold. Klopp leaves a large squad with a host of gifted youngsters who may want further opportunities. The sheer volume of them could complicate Slot’s task. The hardest bit, of course, is simply following Klopp, the huge personality who had a colossal impact at Anfield. But as one era ends, another will start. Klopp has got Anfield singing Slot’s name. It is up to him how long they carry on. – The Independent Welcome to Liverpool, Arne … your in-tray is already overflowing PORTUGAL’S 39-year-old forward Cristiano Ronaldo will play in his sixth European Championship and veteran defender Pepe also made the cut as coach Roberto Martinez named his 26-man squad yesterday. Ronaldo, who has scored in every Euros since his first appearance in 2004, has netted 14 goals in the finals. He also scored 10 times in European qualifying matches last year. Ronaldo now plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr where he has scored 42 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions. “Cristiano? It’s better to talk about the data. He’s a player w h o ’ s scored 42 goals in 41 games for his club,” Martinez said. “That shows his continuity and physical ability to always be fit, as well as the quality he has in front of goal, which we really like and need.” However, Ronaldo will not be the oldest member of the squad with Martinez also calling up Porto defender Pepe who turned 41 this year. Pepe was an integral part of Porto’s team this year, making 38 appearances as they reached the Champions League last 16 and finished third in the league behind Sporting and Benfica. They are also in the Cup final. “Pepe’s role in the dressing room is important, the way he represents the national team shirt. I think that during the training camp, football is a constant struggle,” Martinez added. “And it was interesting to see Pepe play two games in March and keep a clean sheet for the 90 minutes he played. His communication, his positioning mean that, when he’s fit, he’s a very important player.” Nine players from the Premier League have been called up including Ruben Dias, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Diogo Jota. Goncalo Inacio is the only Sporting player in the squad. – Reuters ARNE SLOT, the former Feyenoord coach who was confirmed as Liverpool manager on Monday, is known as a passionate leader who gets the most out of his player and demands a strong work ethic. A fan of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Slot was a slick forward as a player with a reputation as an accurate passer – so much so he has a move named after him. Here are five key facts about the 45-year-old who will replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Arne Slot Pass Slot joined PEC Zwolle as a 17-yearold striker known more for his technique than his running. “Silky” and “cultured” are words often used to describe his playing style, and PEC Zwolle still employ the “Arne Slot Pass”, said former teammate Bram van Polen. The Arne Slot Pass is a slight deflection from a forward with his back to goal which splits the defence and releases a winger running off the ball. Dressing room style When Slot’s name became linked to the Anfield job, Liverpool fans, looking for clues to their future boss’ style, widely shared a rousing team talk he gave Feyenoord players after an historic victory at Ajax. “The reason why we are where we are today is because you work your ass off every single day. And that’s the reason you could beat this team in their own stadium, without our fans being here,” he told the dressing room. Spurs links Liverpool were not the first Premier League club to show interest in Slot. He was heavily linked with Tottenham during their troubled search to replace Antonio Conte in May 2023. As Spurs were reportedly about to seal the deal, Slot abruptly walked out, signing a new contract instead with Rotterdambased Feyenoord. Guardiola fan The British press have already dubbed Slot the “Dutch Pep Guardiola” for the high-pressing attacking style much beloved by Feyenoord fans. In several interviews, he has cited Guardiola as his role model. Run, run, run As a coach, Slot is known for a fierce work ethic, driving to Feyenoord’s camp before dawn, watching every training session, and obsessively studying future opponents. This has led to results for Feyenoord, seen as a team with physically fit players who work hard for each other and often score late goals. – AFP Five things to know about incoming Anfield boss █ BY RICHARD JOLLY BRIEFS Scottie arrest drove ratings spike SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER’S arrest drama contributed to an 18% viewership boost for Friday’s second round of the PGA Championship, Sports Business Journal reported yesterday. The second round from Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, averaged 1.61 million viewers on ESPN from noon to 8pm, up from 1.37 million for the same slot for the 2023 tournament at Oak Hill in New York. Scheffler, 27, was arrested in the pre-dawn hours Friday, shortly after arriving at the golf course, and charged with felony assault of a police officer. He also was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. Louisville police said an officer was “dragged to the ground” by a vehicle driven by Scheffler, who was attempting to bypass a backup caused by the fatal accident earlier that morning. Scheffler was released in time to make his tee time, which was pushed back by 80 minutes for all players because of the traffic jam that resulted from the accident. He finished T8 in the event after shooting a final round 65 on Sunday. Pep named Manager of the Year PEP GUARDIOLA was named Premier League Manager of the Year yesterday after guiding Manchester City to an unprecedented fourth successive title. The Spanish coach has previously won the award four times since he joined the club in 2016. With six League titles, he is now the joint second-most successful coach in the history of English football. “This award reflects the hard work and excellence of the people at the Club in all departments,” Guardiola said. “I am so proud to be manager of this group of players and work alongside the brilliant coaches and support staff every day. Winning four titles in a row is one of the proudest achievements of my career. This is the toughest league in the world and our competitors have played some incredible football.” Retirement looms for Ranieri CLAUDIO RANIERI will leave his job as Cagliari coach by mutual agreement, the Serie A club said yesterday, as local media reported that the 72- year-old was set to retire from football. The announcement came after Cagliari guaranteed themselves another season in the Italian top flight following their away win at Sassuolo on Sunday. Sky Sports Italia reported that Cagliari will be Ranieri’s final team, as he has decided to retire from football. Ranieri will coach Cagliari for the last time today when they host Fiorentina in their final game of the season. Ruthless Southgate G England axe Rashford from Euro 2024 squad, Henderson, Chilwell also miss out ARETH SOUTHGATE has axed Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson from his England training squad for Euro 2024 and given call-ups to young and in-form players. Uncapped Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones are in a 33-man party along with Everton centreback Jarrad Branthwaite, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who began 2024 as a Championship player with Blackburn. Henderson, who was England vice-captain and has won 81 caps, has not missed a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup but has had a difficult season, first joining Al-Ettifaq and then leaving after six months to sign for Ajax. Southgate had remained loyal to both the midfielder and forward Rashford as they struggled at club level, until taking the dramatic decision to drop both. Rashford, who has been in England’s last four major tournament squads, including all three under Southgate, has not started a match since last month’s FA Cup semifinal. He has only scored eight goals for Manchester United and loses out to wingers who have enjoyed more productive seasons. Cole Palmer, the second-highest scorer in the Premier League, Jarrod Bowen, who got 20 goals in all competitions for West Ham, and Anthony Gordon were all preferred. Jack Grealish, who has lost his place in the Manchester City side, was also chosen ahead of Rashford. Southgate will need to trim his squad to 26 players to take to Germany but is giving some of the next generation a chance to impress him and force their way in. Quansah, who was playing in League One last season while on loan with Bristol Rovers, has had a meteoric rise and ended the season in Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice team at Liverpool. Wharton is one of four Palace players included, with Eberechi Eze benefitting from his fine end to the season under Oliver Glasner, Dean Henderson taking his injured teammate Sam Johnstone’s spot as a backup goalkeeper and Marc Guehi returning to fitness in time to regain his place. Henderson will probably compete for a place in the final 26 with Trafford, who did not play for Burnley after being dropped in March. In attack, Ivan Toney has been chosen despite going three months and 12 games without a goal for Brentford. However, the 28-year-old scored for England against Belgium in March. At left-back, Southgate picked Luke Shaw, who has not played since February and is a doubt for the FA Cup final, but left out Ben Chilwell. Southgate also omitted Chelsea captain Reece James, who has not started a game in 2024 and has had an injury-hit season. Kieran Trippier, who was out for almost two months with a calf injury, is selected, along with Joe Gomez. Both could offer options at leftback. Southgate has given chances to Lewis Dunk, who struggled in the March friendlies, and Ezri Konsa. As expected, Harry Maguire, who has been injured, is included. In midfield, Wharton, Jones, Trent AlexanderArnold, Conor Gallagher and Kobbie Mainoo are in contention to benefit from Henderson’s absence. There is no place in the squad for Kalvin Phillips, Jadon Sancho, Nick Pope, Fikayo Tomori, Levi Colwill or Dominic Solanke, while Eric Dier, Mason Mount and Rico Lewis also miss out. Southgate will have to name his final squad on 8 June, after England’s friendlies against BosniaHerzegovina and Iceland. – The Independent Marcus wishes Lions ‘all the best’ MARCUS RASHFORD wished Gareth Southgate and England “all the best” at Euro 2024 after the Manchester United forward was left out of the squad for the tournament this summer. The 26-yearold has represented England at the last four major international tournaments but has suffered a difficult season on the pitch this term, scoring just eight goals in all competitions for United. Rashford took to Instagram shortly after England’s training squad was announced and posted a message of support for the Three Lions ahead of the Euros. “Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament,” Rashford said. Southgate admitted it was a “difficult decision” to leave both players out. “These are, of course, difficult calls, talking about players who are very good players, who have been an important part of what we’ve done for a number of years,” Southgate said. “With Marcus, I just feel other players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that.” Shaw a ‘long shot’ for Germany ENGLAND left back Luke Shaw is a major injury doubt ahead of Euro 2024 with Gareth Southgate admitting the Manchester United defender is a “long shot” to be fit for the tournament. Shaw is England’s first choice at leftback and has started there at the past two major tournaments, with Southgate admitting he will give the Manchester United defender every chance to make the tournament. “He’s up against it,” Southgate said. “He’s missed a lot of football. The fact that he has been our first choice in that position, we’ve probably given him a lot longer than we would have done. I’m not sure what’s realistic at this time. I have to say, he’s a long shot.” Kane fit for Euros ENGLAND captain Harry Kane has recovered from a back injury and is looking forward to the upcoming European Championship, manager Gareth Southgate said yesterday. Bayern Munich striker Kane missed his side’s final two Bundesliga games with back issues he has been dealing with since before their Champions League semifinal loss to Real Madrid a fortnight ago. However, England manager Southgate included the 30-year-old striker in his provisional squad for the June 14-July 14 tournament. “Kane is pretty much clear now. He is quite relaxed about it. I think a sensible decision was taken not to push for the last game there,” Southgate said. “Back problems can just happen, but it is not something we are concerned about at this moment in time. Our understanding of it is that it is something that is pretty much clear now.” █ BY RICHARD JOLLY SIDENETTING England’s Marcus Rashford (right) with manager Gareth Southgate after being substituted during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. – REUTERSPIX

Since it was the first match, we didn’t overthink it, but we’re happy to have progressed this time,” Ee Wei said. “This is our first time qualifying for the Olympics, so we need to take every tournament seriously and aim to win as much as we can,“ Ee Wei added. Azizulhasni, nicknamed The Pocket Rocketman, said he might ‘withdraw’ from the bronze medal race in men’s sprint if he loses in the semifinals, to conserve energy for the keirin event at the Saint-Quentin-enYvelines Velodrome. “At the 2024 Olympics, the sprint event is held first, followed by keirin, so the plan is, if I can reach the final (sprint), I will push myself to finish it. “If we go only for the bronze race, I will pull out to focus on the keirin,” he told reporters after winning the men’s elite sprint at the 2024 National Track Cycling Championships at the National Velodrome on Tuesday. In the final, the Terengganu rider beat fellow national cyclist Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom from Johor 2-0. Azizulhasni admitted that he threw his race in the men’s sprint preliminary rounds at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after being eliminated in the 1/8 repechages to concentrate on the keirin event, where he eventually won silver. The 2017 world keirin champion also said he has been shaping up well for his final Olympic appearance, especially after enduring a challenging competition at the Japan Track Cup at the Izu Velodrome, Shizuoka, recently. “In Japan, I was not in top condition plus I didn’t wear actual race gear. But I was not far from their riders who were at their peak because that event was the official selection for their Olympic squad,” he said. Despite a punishing schedule which saw him competing in 21 races at the Japan Track Cup, Azizulhasni still brought home two bronze medals in the sprint and keirin events. The Dungun-born rider said he will try to gauge the performance of other cyclists when competing in a tournament in Belgium next month, which will be his final international competition before the Paris Olympics. “The race in Belgium will be part of the preparation for the 2024 Olympics. I will not show our actual tactics but will try to monitor other riders’ form there,” he said. The 2024 Olympics will be held from July 26 to Aug 11. – Bernama Malaysia draw against Kazakhstan DEFENSIVE stalwart Muhammad Najmi Farizal Jazlan scored two goals in one minute to help Malaysia fight back to a 3-3 draw against hosts Kazakhstan in their second Group B match of the 2024 Men’s Indoor Hockey Asia Cup in Taldykorgan yesterday. Muhammad Najmi turned hero for defending champions Malaysia – scoring two penalty corner goals in the 38th and 39th minute. Malaysia had earlier found themselves trailing after just two minutes when Tashkeyev Yermek netted a field goal before forward Faridzul Afiq Mohd equalised with a penalty corner goal in the 15th minute. Kazakhstan then made it 2-1 when Tashkeyev sounded the board for his second goal just two minutes later off a penalty corner setpiece before Duisengazy Agymtay stretched their lead to 3-1 courtesy of a field goal in the 34th minute. However, Kazakhstan’s hopes of a second win after trouncing Indonesia 6-2 yesterday were thwarted, thanks to Muhammad Najmi’s two-goal blitz. Malaysia began their campaign in style when they hammered Oman 10-2 on Tuesday. Wee Kiong not ready to retire PROFESSIONAL men’s doubles shuttler Tan Wee Kiong has not yet decided whether to retire from the badminton arena. Wee Kiong, 35, said that while retirement from the sport is under consideration, he is not rushing to set any timeline for this decision. “Not yet (thinking about retirement) if there are sponsors, it’s okay. It’s in the plan (to continue playing next year) but nothing is confirmed yet. I haven’t set a time frame (for moving on to the next chapter), but I cherish my time on the court and in training. I hope to achieve excellent results before I retire,” he told reporters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday. Wee Kiong and his partner, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub, were shown the exit by compatriots Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal Nazri in straight sets, 20-22 and 19-21, in the first round of the Malaysia Masters 2024. However, he did not rule out the possibility that the Malaysia Masters 2024 might be his last tournament on home soil. Sivasangari nominated for PSA award NATIONAL squash ace S. Sivasangari has been listed as one of the five world squash women players nominated for the PSA Female Player of the Year award. According to the Professional Squash Association (PSA), the winners of the four biggest annual awards – Female Player of the Year, Male Player of the Year, Young Female Player of the Year and Young Male Player of the Year – will be decided by votes. “Voting will close at 11.59pm on Monday, May 27, with the winners announced at the PSA Awards dinner held at The Book Rotunda in Birmingham on Saturday, June 8 following the semifinals of the British Open. “Voting comprises a two-part process, combining the votes made by squash fans on social media with the votes made by the PSA Awards Committee – a group consisting of selected influential former players, members of the media, tournament promoters and PSA Board representatives,” it said. The other nominees for the Female Player of the Year award are world No. 1 Nour El Sherbini, Nouran Gohar and Hania El Hammamy of Egypt and Olivia Weaver of the United States. Faisal Halim’s 4th surgery positive Harimau Malaya and Selangor FC (SFC) winger Muhammad Faisal Abdul Halim, better known as Faisal Halim, has shown positive results after his fourth surgery, according to SFC Board Member Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar. Shahril said that Faisal Halim, who underwent split skin grafting surgery on Monday, will be assessed by specialists to determine whether the player will be allowed to return home or not. “For this surgery, the progress has been very good. Normally, with skin grafting, covering 70 percent of the wounded area is considered good, but it’s miraculous for Faisal to have covered all the injured and affected areas, with the wounds looking dry and neat,” he said. “The specialists will not only observe the wounded area but also the donor part, which is both sides of Faisal’s thighs, to ensure he can move easily before being discharged,” he added. Mauricio Pochettino has left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent, although those who know the manager insist his desire was much stronger by the time the decision leaked. His future was the subject of an internal endof-season review with Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who will now search for the fourth full-time manager under the current ownership since their takeover in 2022. “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season,” Winstanley and Stewart said in a joint statement. “He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career.” Pochettino thanked Chelsea’s ownership group in the club’s statement, and added: “The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come.” He had wanted out for weeks, having found the structure of the club increasingly difficult to work in. Chelsea may now have some work convincing a manager of the required profile to join, as they have to make a number of other decisions to meet Profit and Sustainability Rules. It is known Pochettino was already aggravated about potential sales of Conor Gallagher or Trevoh Chalobah. He himself will now become of immediate interest to Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United. The German club have already actively considered the possibility. It should be acknowledged there might not have been that many options for Pochettino a few months ago. As Chelsea’s form remained erratic, the talk was more from the other side, and how the club’s American hierarchy were considering moving on. The tone drastically changed as the impact of Pochettino’s tactics began to be seen, the team started to play some convincing football, and they ended up in sixth after winning their final five games of the season. The feeling among Premier League rivals was that, if they could add a touch more class in attack and maybe some experience, they could get close to 80 points. This is the frustration now for many of the Chelsea squad. They could feel everything was on the up. This was also a frustration for Pochettino, though. He had no guarantees that the necessary improvements would be made. That wasn’t the only issue, either. There is a lot of uncertainty around the medium-term direction, compounded by the hierarchy. The word grows around football that Chelsea are “a basket case”. Who knows, this might be a threshold moment for the club. They could have quickly become a serious outfit again, if only because they stuck to an approach that was working. Instead, the next appointment – again – is crucial. Roberto De Zerbi offers a potential quick solution, although there is competition from Juventus. Chelsea insist they want to appoint a long-term project manager and they are interested in Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna. The great question is whether Chelsea are back at an even more chaotic point than they were under Roman Abramovich, when Brendan Rodgers said he wouldn’t go there as an up-andcoming coach because he wanted to build a career. On the other side, Pochettino has to be wise about his own next choice. He has probably got out of Chelsea with his reputation largely unaffected by this stint but it has been two chaotic jobs in a row that has caused his career to stagnate. He went from one extreme, and Paris SaintGermain with their series of stars on bloated contracts, to another, and Chelsea’s group of unproven kids. This was another element that frustrated the Pochettino camp earlier in the season. He has instead disrupted the managerial market. That had recently been characterised by a number of major clubs prevaricating on unproven options. The Argentine has more clout than pretty much anyone out there. Chelsea are meanwhile looking beyond. – The Independent SCAN ME THURSDAY | MAY 23, 2024 or download app from the App Store or Google PlayTM . www.thesun.my Free access to iPaper PDF Download SCAN ME Malaysian Paper Read iPaper at Malaysian Paper Malaysian Paper Final hurrah -Story - on page 29 Story on page 28 Welcome to Liverpool -Story on page 30 Ruthless Southgate ‘They are a basket case’ Pochettino leaves Chelsea by mutual consent Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino (right) looks dejected after the match against Arsenal back in April. – REUTERSPIX
