CAM TO BBC: CALL HAMAS TERRORISTS By NOA HOFFMAN SICK hostage videos of a Briton held by Hamas must be a wake-up call for woke BBC bosses, Lord David Cameron said yesterday. After militants aired the propaganda footage of dualnational Nadav Popplewell, the Foreign Secretary demanded the Beeb label the group a terrorist organisation. On the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Lord Cameron said: “I watched that video and you just think what callous people they are to do that, to play with the family’s emotions in that way. “And maybe it’s a moment actually for the BBC to ask itself again, should we describe these people as terrorists? They are terrorists. “If you kidnap grandmothers, if you kidnap babies, if you rape people, if you shoot children in front of their parents — what more do they need to do for the BBC to say, ‘Look these are terrorists’. They really are.” As the footage emerged on Saturday, Hamas claimed the 51-year-old Mr Popplewell was now dead from wounds suffered in an Israel Defence Forces strike. Mr Popplewell’s brother was killed in Israel during the October 7 massacre, while his mother was released as part of the November ceasefire hostage exchange. The Foreign Office is investigating the footage. It came as tens of thousands more Palestinians were warned by the IDF to evacuate Rafah to the al-Mawasi “expanded humanitarian zone”. Israel vowed to proceed with a Rafah incursion, despite stern warnings against it by US President Joe Biden. Lord Cameron said: “For there to be a major offensive in Rafah, there would have to be an absolutely clear plan about how you save lives, how you move people out the way, how you make sure they’re fed. We have seen no such plan so we don’t support an offensive in that way.” While President Biden threatened to withhold the sale of weapons, if the IDF continued into Rafah, the Foreign Secretary said an immediate UK arms embargo would not be “wise”. He added that stopping arms supplies would strengthen Hamas and lessen the chance of a hostage deal. The BBC said it has to attribute use of the word terrorist to others. It said: “No one consuming BBC News can be left unaware of the horrific nature of Hamas’s acts. We’ve made our long-standing position on this matter very clear — we use the word terrorist when it is attributed to others, such as the UK Government.” [email protected] The Sun Says — Page Ten ISRAEL ‘LASER’ MISSILE Callous hostage video of Brit is ‘wake-up call’ Interview . . . EXCLUSIVE: PHILLIPS WOOS KISSES HARRIET AT ROYAL OUTING 13-YEAR MARRIAGE Autumn and Peter reveal engagement in 2007 ROMANCE FOR 3 YEARS A RIDE GOOD WEEKEND WITH ROYALS Peter, flanked by his two girls, points towards Harriet as he chats to Queen Camilla Big welcome . . . Queen Camilla Peter’s horse trials date.. is it a stable relationship? By MATT WILKINSON, Royal Editor and EMILY-JANE HEAP PETER Phillips and his date both looked “smitten” as they shared a kiss after joining royals at posh horse trials. The King’s nephew and Harriet Sperling spent all weekend at Badminton, strolling handin-hand among crowds and rarely leaving each other’s side. Harriet, a paediatric specialist nurse and freelance writer in her 40s, beamed in a pink maxi dress and shades on Saturday. The couple watched the crosscountry horse riding from a sponsor’s tent before leaving in a vehicle with Peter’s daughters Savannah, 13, and Isla, 12. Yesterday they were back at the swish Gloucestershire event, where Peter shared a warm greeting with Queen Camilla. The two royals chatted briefly as glam mum Harriet looked on. It is unclear whether she has been formally introduced to the Queen, or Peter’s mum Princess Anne and stepdad Sir Tim Laurence. Peter’s dad is Captain Mark Phillips. His sister Zara Tindall, 42, and her hubby Mike, 45, were also at the horsey bash this weekend. A witness said of Peter and Harriet: “They looked completely smitten and he was grinning from ear to ear. “He looked like the cat that got the cream and acted without a care in the world. “He didn’t seem to mind who saw them together. “She looked very happy and relaxed in his company and pleased to be shown off at one of the biggest social events in the equestrian world. “His love life has certainly taken some very public twists and turns in recent years. “But they looked extremely close and seemed like they had known each other for some time. “They certainly seemed very happy and appeared to be over any past relationship woes.” A friend of Peter confirmed that the royal has met someone recently and they were spending time together, stressing it was too early to be anything more. It comes just a few weeks after divorcee Peter, 46, who is 18th in line to the throne, split from his partner of three years Lindsay Wallace, 43. Sources told The Sun the relationship simply “ran its course”. Harriet bears a striking resemblance to both Lindsay and Peter’s ex-wife Autumn Kelly, 46. He and Canadian-born Autumn, mum to their two girls, announced their engagement in 2007 and wed in 2008. But in February 2020 they confirmed they had split the previous year. Their 13-year marriage ended with divorce in June 2021. Peter met Lindsay, an ex-classmate of Zara, at £45,000-a-year Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland. They reconnected at a 2019 reunion and The Sun revealed they had started dating in March 2021. The relationship became so serious that Lindsay was introduced to his gran, the late Queen Elizabeth II, at Windsor Castle in January 2022. Later that year Peter and Lindsay appeared together as a couple at Royal Ascot and the Epsom Derby. They also appeared clearly loved-up in a Vogue Australia photoshoot with the Tindalls. Last summer Lindsay appeared in the Royal Box at Wimbledon with Peter and Queen Camilla. But the couple called it quits earlier this year. No one else is believed to have been involved and the end of their relationship was described as “amicable”. Despite being the eldest grandchild of the late Queen, Peter was not given a royal title at birth as his parents wanted him and Zara to lead as normal a life as possible. Peter kept the peace at Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021 by standing between his cousins, warring William and Harry. Last Christmas he did not join the other royals at Sandringham. Away from royal life he has run several firms and last year reportedly wanted to open an ice rink at Kensington Palace. A spokesman for Peter declined to comment last night. NURSE AFTER LOVE SPLIT HEIR TO THROWN Having a ball . . . Prince Harry at Giants of Africa event yesterday Dazzling . . . Meg, Hand-in-hand . . . and Prince Harry Harriet and Peter By MATT WILKINSON PRINCE Harry was cock-a-hoop to continue his African tour — as he turned his hand to basketball. He and wife Meghan were unveiling a partnership between their Archewell Foundation and the non-profit Giants of Africa, which aims to empower young people through sport. The Sussexes watched a practice session at Ilupeju Senior Grammar School in Lagos, Nigeria, before Harry, 39, joined in. He said: “The power of sport can change lives. It brings people together and creates community and there are no barriers, which is the most important thing.” Meghan, 42, later swapped a Carolina Herrera buttondown shirt, and a traditional Nigerian skirt gifted to her, for a favourite £3,000 yellow gown by the same designer. She and Harry walked hand-in-hand as they arrived at State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s house, where they were guests of honour. Meanwhile it emerged that on his three-day visit to Britain last week, Harry stayed in the hotel where he had spent the night before his 2018 wedding. Back then Prince William stayed too, but the brothers are now hardly speaking. The King was said to be too busy to see Harry on his trip. But The Sunday Times reported that Charles did agree to put him up in a royal home. However, instead Harry opted for the £600-a-night Coworth Park Hotel, near Ascot, Berks. The five-star hotel is owned by The Sultan of Brunei and sits on the edge of Windsor Great Park — a 15- minute drive from Windsor Castle. The Foreign Secretary slammed Sir Keir Starmer for welcoming in the rightwing hardliner — amid fresh allegations that she lobbied on behalf of her sex offender ex-husband. Lord Cameron said: “This is quite a right-wing Conservative MP suddenly welcomed into the Labour fold having never supported any of their policies, people or approaches.” Labour yesterday backed the Dover MP, brushing off the fresh corruption claims against her. She has been accused of pushing ministers in 2020 to interfere in her ex-husband Charlie Elphicke’s sex offences trial. The Sunday Times reported she told then Lord Chancellor Sir Robert Buckland it was unfair the case was the first to be heard at Southwark crown court after the Covid lockdown. One person present viewed her comments as a bid to have the case moved to a lower-profile court to spare embarrassment. But Labour’s Shadow Paymaster General Jonathan Ashworth told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme: “She said that is nonsense and not her interpretation of the meeting. “I obviously wasn’t in the meeting so I don’t know. “If this happened at the time, then why did the Lord Chancellor not raise this issue at the time through his good offices?” [email protected] By NOA HOFFMAN By LUKE CHAFER KEIRA Knightley flashes a smile despite getting drenched by the rain. Dire result . . . Olly OUR BAD TRACK RECORD HERE we are again — another Eurovision and another dire result for the UK. How can a nation with such a rich musical legacy have such a bad track record? I was in the audience in 2022 when Sam Ryder delivered his rousing anthem Space Man and propelled us to second place. But clearly we didn’t learn — as we’ve become a laughing stock again. It is a closely fought contest with belting voices, so a softer sound like Olly Alexander is never going to cut through — no amount of thrusting on stage can make up for that. It’s time to send a brilliant song by a singer with a powerful voice. We have mountains of talent so let’s get ourselves ready for 2025. It’s a song contest, not rocket science. By Associate Bizarre Editor HOWELL DAVIES By HOWELL DAVIES and THOMAS GODFREY EUROVISION had its most disastrous night to date after viewing figures plummeted and even the acts turned on the contest. It was watched by 8.5 million in the UK, down 2.5 million on last year, as the song contest was overshadowed by tensions over Gaza. And it was a disappointing night for UK entry Olly Alexander, 33, who finished 18th out of 25 with his song Dizzy. He was the only act to receive nothing in the public vote and drowned his sorrows by drinking until 3.40am with his mum. A source said: “Olly was braced for disaster after he saw the bookies’ odds but it was really embarrassing to get the dreaded nul points from the public. “He’s really deflated after such a long and rocky road to get to the final. He’s trying to keep his head held high but it’s really upsetting as there was no love at all for him from the viewers.” The days leading up to the final, which had included two semi-finals, had been eclipsed by protests by tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian activists. They were angry at the involvement of Israel’s act Eden Golan, 20, due to the Gaza conflict and had called for a boycott of the event at Sweden’s Malmo Arena. There were boos from the crowd during her performances, both in rehearsals and on the night. But Israel received top points in the televote from the highest number of countries. The competition was eventually won by Swiss act Nemo with their song The Code — the first non-binary victor. Croatia’s Baby Lasagne was second and Ukraine’s Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil third. There was also controversy among the acts. Dutch entry Joost Klein was dropped following a police incident and some performers claimed they were being censored. During the show itself, Finland’s Windows95man gave viewers an eyeful by performing in nude undies. But it was not enough to pull in the viewers, with the good weather and a general decline in terrestrial viewing figures also thought to have affected poor ratings. Several acts criticised the organisation of this year’s contest, including Lithuania’s Silvester Belt, who called it “traumatic”. And Ireland’s Bambie Thug said: “It’s been so hard and it’s been so horrible for us”. Eurovision’s executive supervisor Martin Osterdahl is now facing calls to step down. Intelligence sources said they have been behind a spate of attacks across Western Europe and the US in the past six months. The terrorists are being drafted by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, and the mercenary Wagner Group. A source said: “These attacks are already happening and the UK is on the list. “Right-wing extremists are targeted as they are pro-Russia, pro-Putin.” Experts say it may be because the West is supplying arms to Ukraine. Think tank Mayak Intelligence said: “When Putin sees Russian factories attacked, he sees the hands of Nato.” Last month, Brit Dylan Earl, 20, was charged with an arson attack in London, allegedly led by the Wagner Group. SUNAK: STICK WITH ME TO KEEP UK SAFE Threats ‘are looming from China, Russia and Iran’ THE CROSSROADS’ WARNING THE next five years will be among the most dangerous Britain has known, Rishi Sunak will warn today — insisting he is the man to lead the country to safety. The PM will argue the UK is at a crossroads, faced with an onslaught of threats from Vladimir Putin in Russia, Xi Jinping in China, and Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a major London speech, Mr Sunak will declare that “almost every aspect of our lives is going to change”. He will say: “I feel a profound sense of urgency — because more will change in the next five years than in the last 30. “I’m convinced that the next few years will be some of the most dangerous our country has ever known.” But he will insist: “I have bold ideas that can change our society for the better.” Mr Sunak will make his pitch as national saviour in an attempt to shrug off this month’s local election thrashing for the struggling Conservatives. As well as threats from foreign powers, he will point to a rise in global migration and sectarian groups trying to undermine British values as major challenges ahead. Rebuilding national confidence and pride will be listed as key to prosperity and security — as well as a pledge to raise defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP. And he will say: “At heart, we’re a nation of optimists. We’re not blind to the challenges or threats we face. We just have an innate belief that whatever they are, we can overcome them as we have done so many times in our history.” Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer will hold talks with Labour’s expanded band of elected mayors to develop what he calls a gold standard for growing local economies. Ahead of the meeting, he said: “My Labour government would rebuild our economy hand in hand with local leaders. That’s why boosting growth across every region will be top of the agenda for our devolution plans. We’ll turbocharge growth across our towns, cities and regions.” [email protected] The Sun Says — Page Ten EXCLUSIVE by RICHARD MORIARTY A POSTIE is such a dead ringer for Hollywood muscleman Jason Momoa that he is mobbed by women — to the frustration of his wife. If Labour gets in, we’ll just turn the lights out Kavanagh TREVOR [email protected] Rishi safety plan IT is a sobering thought when the Prime Minister warns the next five years are likely to be some of the most dangerous the country has ever known. And yet who would doubt him considering the security threat posed by Russia, Iran and, increasingly, China — whose latest act in the undeclared cyber warfare it wages against us looks to have been the hacking of sensitive details on Ministry of Defence staff? Then there is the threat from sectarian voices here in the UK, sowing division and hatred. British values and British security have rarely been under such threat and the case for increased defence spending and beefed up national security could hardly be greater. So it is pertinent to ask who you would feel most comfortable leading us in the near future, marshalling our defences and rallying the public to move forward with confidence and pride. The Tories will seek to focus minds on the past record of Sir Keir Starmer who, let’s not forget, campaigned to put Jeremy Corbyn in 10 Downing Street. He has yet to commit to raise defence spending and would allow 100,000 illegal immigrants to stay in Britain, while abolishing the Rwanda deterrent plan. Rishi Sunak will insist today that, by contrast, he has a plan to navigate us to safety as we teeter on the edge of conflict. We look forward to hearing it. It’s urgently needed. Truth on Hamas AS naive students were occupying university campuses and other useful idiots were trying to disrupt Eurovision in their misguided pro-Palestinian protests, the evil Hamas terrorists they glorify were preparing their latest sick act. First they broadcast a video of clearly brutalised British-born hostage Nadav Popplewell, tormenting his loved ones as they teased them over his fate. Three hours later they announced his death, superimposing cartoon blood over his face as they gloated about his demise. Their inhumanity is sickening, toying with the lives of the hostages and weaponising the pain of their families for propaganda, in violation of all international law. Meanwhile, the virtue-signalling numpties attacking Eurovision protested outside BBC buildings, accusing the corporation of glossing over Israel’s actions in Gaza by broadcasting the song contest. What a waste of time. The Beeb is too busy glossing over the fact that Hamas are terrorists. As Lord Cameron rightly says, the latest atrocity should be a wake-up call to the BBC. It’s high time they correctly labelled Hamas — who use both hostages and their own people as human shields — as the bloodthirsty monsters they are. Sun THE SAYS The Sun for sticking his head in a lightbulb under the headline: “Will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights.” In the event, he was wiped out by John Major with the biggest Tory vote in history. Nobody, including Kinnock, is predicting a Tory upset this time. But along with other Labour bigwigs, he seems strikingly critical of a man who could be his party’s next Prime Minister. Future storms Blairite plotter Peter Mandelson, aka the Prince of Darkness, was accused recently of “fat-shaming” after urging Starmer to “shed a few pounds”. In private, Mandy goes further, blaming Starmer for failing to deliver a manifesto — the contract with voters all governments need to survive future storms. To quote the Tories, Starmer is a man with no plan. We haven’t a clue what Labour would do about tax and borrowing, immigration, the EU, Russia or Gaza. The only certainty is a massive splurge in state spending. Pundits, myself included, might write off Rishi Sunak’s chances of re-election. But with polling day still six months off, the worm is turning. Last week’s swathe of economic news shows the PM does have a plan. And it IS working. The UK is out of recession with a 0.6 per cent growth spurt. Inflation is plunging. Mortgages will follow. “The economy is going gangbusters,” whooped the usually sedate Office for National Statistics. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey admits interest rates will fall faster than he predicted. If the Tories do lose the election, will Bailey shoulder responsibility? The Bank’s only job is to control inflation by raising or lowering interests rates. Bailey failed to act promptly as inflation leaped and was slow to trim rates as prices fell. The Bank, says one of its own policy advisers, was guilty of “persistent and systematic” errors, but voters still blame the Tories. Starmer might not reveal his secret manifesto but clues can be found in London and Wales, where Labour is already in power. In our crime and stabbing capital, London Mayor Sadiq Khan is plotting to bash longsuffering motorists with payper-mile road pricing. Watch that go nationwide. Taxes will hit us all The chaotic Welsh government is raising council tax for anyone lucky enough to live in low-crime areas or near good schools — a plan Starmer will roll out across the UK. Pensioners who saved for old age or own their homes, sneeringly dubbed “rich codgers”, will be fleeced by Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves. “Green” taxes will hit us all. Don’t expect Starmer to spell this out before the election. He and Rachel will just carry on lying about the economy. But be in no doubt, there IS a Labour plan. It will involve the biggest tax raid since Gordon Brown stole our pensions, sold our gold for a pittance — and one of his team left the incoming Tory Chancellor with a note saying: “I’m afraid there is no money.” LABOUR leader Keir Starmer may be an Arsenal fan but his election squad seems more in tune with Millwall and its 1970s anthem: “No one likes us, we don’t care.” The defiant Cold Blow Lane chant went global as Millwall reached the FA Cup Final in 2004, only to lose 3-0 to Manchester United. Some party insiders fear arrogant Starmer is tempting a similar fate. None more so than former party boss Neil Kinnock, who speaks from bitter personal experience. Nobody loves Starmerite Labour, he told the BBC. “Expressing enthusiasm is different from expressing desperation,” said the Welsh windbag. “People will say, ‘Let’s get the bloody Tories out’, but they won’t say, ‘Hurrah, hurrah, marvellous, freedom, liberation is with us because of Keir Starmer’.” He then blasted his successor for embracing right-wing Tory deserter Natalie Elphicke. Such disloyalty from a former Labour chieftain would have been unimaginable in his day. But Kinnock is well placed to offer an opinion. Like Starmer, he dumped all his loony Left baggage so as to appear electable. In 1992, with a stonking lead in the polls, he effectively declared victory at a Sheffield party rally. He never forgave FOREIGN Secretary Lord Cameron gave the mealymouthed BBC an ear-bashing yesterday. In an interview with Laura Kuenssberg, he challenged the Beeb’s refusal to brand Hamas a terrorist organisation after it released a “callous” video of a hostage allegedly killed by an Israeli bomb. “If you kidnap grandmothers, kidnap babies, if you rape people, if you shoot children in front of their parents – what more do they need to do for the BBC to say, ‘look, these are terrorists’?” Millions of BBC viewers – and ex-viewers – are asking the same question. 10 ............... The number of ill and unemployed females is at 1.54 million — a 48 per cent rise since 2019, and the highest level since records began in 1993. Economic inactivity due to musculoskeletal problems increased by 126,000, according to TUC analysis of Office for National Statistics data. The number with conditions such as cancer shot up by 19,000, while mental illness took 69,000 out of employment. The 46-year-old — a DJ for Classic FM — was showing off one of her own designs from her Next range. She is also a music mentor for pupils at her old school. Myleene said: “I call them from all over the world, from LA or Miami or, most recently, Colombia.” China blackmail warning EXCLUSIVE by ROB PATTINSON A SEX club booked by England fans for next month’s Euros is said to be a hotbed of activity for Chinese spies. Pascha — the world’s biggest brothel — has sold out its 120 rooms to Three Lions supporters struggling to find hotels for one of the matches in host nation Germany. But reports say a Chinese woman owns the building in Cologne and there are spies living on the ninth floor. It raises the prospect of fans being caught in compromising positions — or even attempts to recruit them as agents. Messages seen by German newspaper Bild show lawyers under investigation for helping wealthy Chinese clients wanting citizenship were linked to Pascha owner Jing Hu, 46, who bought it for £10million in 2021. German security expert Stefan Bisanz said Chinese spies had been active in his country, adding: “The British fan is more likely to become a victim than the normal citizen who knows the area.” Fan Steve Brown, 35, of Preston, said ahead of the June 25 clash between Harry Kane, right, and Co and Slovenia in the city: “Hotel prices have gone through the roof for the Euros — it’s much cheaper to stay in a brothel than a B&B.” Pascha has laughed off the claims by offering a “discount for spies” promotion. robert.pattinson@ the-sun.co.uk Chinese whispers . . . brothel Picture: NEXT Monday, May 13, 2024 ............... 11
Cawood, played by Sarah Lancashire, having a final showdown with her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce, played by James Norton. It ended with Royce setting himself alight. Despite most of the big names of the cast being in the audience, including Sarah, it was the youngest cast member, 19-year-old Rhys Connah, who accepted the award on stage by himself. Rhys, who played the grandson of Catherine and son of Tommy, said: “I got a message the other day saying that if we won this that I could say a few words. They didn’t tell me I’d be doing it on my own. I thought I’d have a few people behind me.” He singled out creator Sally Wainwright for praise, saying: “She wrote the incredible scene where my dad blows himself up in front of my grandma — a bit dark but who am I to say?” As co-star Sarah collected her Leading Actress award, she said she was glad to let her character go — but would miss the cast. “I do feel extraordinarily privileged to have had their company,” she said. Hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman dazzled in white outfits as they led the BBC One dance show’s team on to the stage to receive the accolade. This Wednesday marks 20 years since Strictly hit TV screens, and Tess said: “We’ve been on television for 20 years. So this is the greatest birthday present.” Other big winners on the night were Netflix hit Top Boy and BBC dramas Happy Valley and The Sixth Commandment. Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire was in tears when named Leading Actress. Strictly host Tess went on: “To the viewers at home, thank you so much for watching because we would not be here without you, and it really does mean the world. “We want to say thank you to all the celebrities for taking part and being so brave. We may be tapping up a few of you in the room for the next series.” With temperatures hitting 27C (80F) outside London’s Royal Festival Hall, 55-year-old Tess also joked: “Thank you so much Bafta, for making it worth putting on the Spanx on the hottest day of the year — it was a struggle.” Claudia, 52, added: “It’s a big year for us and it’s a privilege to do the show. A THIRD man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after two women died in a house fire. Two men, aged 19 and 22, were held hours after the Saturday 2am incident — which saw four others taken to hospital. Yesterday police were given more time to question the pair, as they announced that a man of 46 had been arrested. All three men were said to be known to the two women, in their early 20s. A cordon remained in place in Dunstall Hill, Wolverhampton. Fatal fire: Trio held EXCLUSIVE by STEPHEN MOYES AN easyJet summer strike loomed closer last night as pilots rejected a monster pay rise. The deal would have boosted their wages to nearly £200,000 a year. But the offer was turned down in a ballot – forcing the Balpa union and easyJet bosses back to the negotiating table. Pilot representatives will threaten industrial action if the rejected deal is not improved. Captains of ten years earn £163,589 and the proposed deal would have sent that soaring to £190,000 in October and near £200,000 by April. Senior first officers would have got another £20,000 to earn £112,879 a year while first officers’ annual pay would have climbed to £75,446. EasyJet said: “We are disappointed that the outcome of the ballot for the pay deal fell short of the 50 per cent required.” £200,000 pay snub by pilots Strike fear . . . airline SLEEPOVER MURDERER ‘SMASHES LAG’S SKULL’ JAIL ATTACK TROUBLE ON HORIZON EXCLUSIVE by MICHAEL HAMILTON SLEEPOVER killer Damien Bendall has allegedly left a prisoner fighting for life after battering him with a claw hammer. The fiend, who killed his pregnant lover and three kids, is said to have smashed the inmate’s skull in a jail workshop. Sources said the victim was bludgeoned three or four times and may not survive. Police were investigating Friday’s alleged attack at Frankland Prison, Co Durham. A source said: “This is a shocking and horrendous attack even by the standards of Frankland, which is a grim and violent place. The prison officers and medics who attended were traumatised. “Police will investigate it as either attempted murder or murder, depending on whether the victim survives. Bendall has been put into a segregation unit.” In December 2022, Bendall, 34, was given a whole-life tariff for killing his four victims the previous year at a house in Killamarsh, Derbys. He murdered Terri Harris, 35, her son John Bennett, 13, daughter Lacey Bennett, 11, and Lacey’s sleepover pal Connie Gent, 11, with a claw hammer after a drugs binge. It later emerged he had convictions for violent offences, and an ex-partner had made allegations of domestic abuse. Last night the Prison Service said: “We cannot comment on a live police investigation but prisoners who are violent face tough punishments.” Durham Police said: “An investigation is under way.” ‘Put in segregation’ . . . 27C...TOO GOOD TO LAST lStormy finish to mini-heatwave GONE IN A FLASH lTorrential rain after hottest day BRITAIN’S mini-heatwave was brought to a sudden end yesterday by thunderous downpours and lightning strikes. Torrential rain across the West caused flash floods just hours after the nation notched temperatures of up to 27.2C (81F). Beaches such as Brighton and Bournemouth were packed as the country soaked up the last of a short run of glorious spring weather. Beer gardens and parks were rammed, too And visitors to the annual May Fayre and Puppet Festival in London’s Covent Garden looked pleased as punch in the sunshine. But the year’s hottest day so far quickly gave way to deluges, with the M4 near Newport flooded in both directions. Lightning and thunder, strong gusts and hail also swept in. Last night, the Met Office warned the wet weather would move eastwards overnight and continue throughout today. Forecaster Honor Criswick said of the sunshine: “It was great while it lasted but over in a flash.” Warnings were in place today for the South West, where rain is likely to disrupt transport. Temperatures are expected to drop this week but should remain in the late teens or early 20s. paul.sims@ thesun.co.uk By PAUL SIMS, Sun Weatherman Punchy . . . puppet fest BOURNEMOUTH Beachgoers enjoy a dip BRIGHTON Packed beach near the famous pier yesterday CHILDREN who eat in front of a TV or iPad are more likely to be obese, a study found. Researchers say Britain, where 60 per cent are overweight or obese, is likely to be worst hit. GOT GOSSIP? CALL OR WHATSAPP THE BIZ BATPHONE WE NEVER SLEEP buzz bi 07590 802979 WATCH out, Eurovision! Next year’s line-up could feature an unlikely new supergroup – JEDWARD with Bizarre’s Associate Editor Howell Davies. Our man joined the twins on stage, left, for an impromptu performance of BACKSTREET BOYS’ I Want It That Way at a pre-contest lunch in Malmo, thrown by the event’s official travel partner, booking.com. The duo, JOHN and EDWARD GRIMES, have represented Ireland twice and suggested they could go for the hat-trick. They commandeered the venue’s mics and performed a whole set, including their entries Lipstick and Waterline, as well as ABBA’s Dancing Queen, while former winner CONCHITA WURST looked on. Following NEMO’s victory for Switzerland on Saturday, there will be plenty of fans checking out booking.com before they flock to the country next year. But I’m afraid I’ve heard Howell’s vocals, so I wouldn’t hold your breath for a win if he does make it to the Eurovision stage. BEST OF 3, JEDWARD? SHE is four decades into her career, with five world tours and more than 100million record sales under her belt. But as she sits down with Bizarre’s Jack Hardwick in Las Vegas for her only UK newspaper chat ahead of her third residency in Sin City, SHANIA TWAIN insists she is far from ready to slow down. In fact the singer, who is two years off turning 60, trains like an athlete for the shows — exercising like a woman half her age and banning solid food before concerts. “I am an athlete, I have to breathe, I have to project. I have to pace everything,” says Shania as she nurses a black tea backstage. “I only drink fluids all day until after the show. I drink my food, so I blend my food. Lots of blended spinach and blueberries.” After I admit to her I would be desperate to demolish a burger come curtain down, she says with a smile: “After the show I am ready to chew. “I am vegetarian, so I only eat vegetarian proteins, but I will eat whatever. I don’t eat like a rabbit. “I am happy to have pasta and I will have a glass of champagne after the show — I like to celebrate. “It’s got to be good quality, but I’m not a snob about it.” So what about Prosecco, which I admit is my preferred tipple? “Prosecco is an afternoon champagne,” Shania laughs. “There is nothing not refined about it, it’s just too light for night time. That’s a lunch bubbly.” Another sag The star’s hardcore regime means she is fitter and more confident than ever. And, refreshingly, it means Shania has sworn off any kind of surgery favoured by Hollywood’s elite. She says: “I decided that wherever there was a mirror and I was naked in my house or hotel, that I would keep the lights on and I would look in the mirror. “A lot of people as they start ageing — and even young people — they don’t want to look at themselves in the mirror naked, and I think that is such a shame. “Every month or day that I may notice another sag or another bit of cellulite, I want to know it’s there. “I want to be OK with it instead of thinking I have to cover it up or not to look. I can’t change it and I don’t plan on changing it superficially. “The surgery on my larynx [in 2018] was necessary for my wellbeing. A surgery that is not necessary for my wellbeing is removing my cellulite. “What is necessary is knowing that it is there and not hating myself for it. I have to take myself on the stage without feeling like I have to cover myself up. I want to feel liberated.” Her Vegas show, Come On Over: All The Hits, features a 21-song setlist heavily inspired by her 1997 album Come On Over. Rousing renditions of Man! I Feel Like A Woman! and That Don’t Impress Me Much are on the bill, along with Giddy Up! and Waking Up Dreaming from her latest record Queen Of Me. “I do things that keep me on the edge so it stays exciting for me,” Shania tells me. “I am celebrating all the way. “When I lost my projection in my voice, I never thought I would even maintain a singing career. “I had no idea I would still be doing this. It is a lot of hard work, don’t get me wrong. “But when I’m having fun I am eating it up. I really mean that — I am having the best time ever.” Thoughtfully, she adds: “Part of the job is to look like WE are all partial to a cheeky lunchtime wine on a Friday – and ELLIE GOULDING is backing us all the way. The chart-topper, inset, has called on supermarkets to add alcohol to their meal deals, after launching her own range of pre-mixed cocktail cans called Served. Talking about her range to mark World Cocktail Day today, Ellie said: “We set out to create cocktails that are as fresh and delicious as the ones in your favourite bar, but in a convenient format. “So, turning into reality the idea of being able to enjoy a delicious cocktail as part of a weekend meal deal would be amazing.” It would certainly make a prawn-mayo sandwich from Tesco more exciting. WHILE LIAM GALLAGHER and brother NOEL have slowed down their partying, and KATE MOSS has gone sober, TIM BURGESS from THE CHARLATANS insists he is still a big caner. In an exclusive chat at the Arias awards, Tim, inset, said: “I go to parties all the time. I am the life of the party. I went to a few of RONNIE WOOD’s and they were pretty out there.” Tim hits the road again with his group in the coming weeks and added: “In the summer, we’re playing in Cardiff with NEW ORDER. It’s amazing. They were my favourite band as a kid. “I mean, they are still my favourite band. “I’m also playing a couple of gigs with JOHNNY MARR. “It’s a different thrill now, but it’s still a thrill. I don’t feel as old as I am.” lPOST MALONE is set to land his third No1 of the year. The US rapper’s new duet with MORGAN WALLEN, I Had Some Help, is fast moving up the charts and is just ahead of Espresso, by SABRINA CARPENTER, leaving her in second place. Data from Official Charts also shows KENDRICK LAMAR’s Not Like Us is enjoying a rise. His beef with DRAKE will certainly have helped here, as there’s no such thing as bad publicity. ELLIE HENMAN’S With HOWELL DAVIES & JACK HARDWICK Singer refuses to eat anything solid before a show SHANIA ON THE GRAVY TWAIN you’re having fun, but I am actually having fun now. “When you are younger, there are a lot of times you don’t get to celebrate your success and you are tired as you’re still building. “You are worried, like, ‘Am I still going to be around tomorrow? Is my next song going to be a hit?’. “But once you have already arrived, you can have fun. I am not worried about anything, to be honest. “This show really does let go of a lot of fears and anxieties that maybe one would have as we age while up there in the spotlight. I care, but I don’t worry about it.” And Shania isn’t just talking the talk. Rather than a pop star simply going through the motions, which you might expect from a woman who started her career in 1983, from the second she bursts on to the stage at Planet Hollywood’s 7,000-capacity Bakkt Theatre, Shania is a ball of energy. From hosting impromptu crowd singalongs as she chats to fans, to giving unfiltered anecdotes about her life, if Shania has any opening weekend nerves, she doesn’t show it. In one candid moment that would give notorious Vegas rambler ADELE a run for her money, Shania casually recalls how she lost her virginity as a child. She has just spotted a fan’s sign declaring that she is attending her 15th show, and the singer says: “Fifteen — that’s when I lost my virginity. I’m just being honest. “If it was my own child that is way too early, OK? I don’t even know why that came out.” So can fans expect more confessions? Black coat Shania says: “I don’t worry what I will say, I don’t have any demons or anything like that. “It’s not like I am going to tell a secret that I wish I hadn’t told. I love my audience and I feel comfortable and safe with them.” Never one to tone down her wardrobe, Shania’s show includes no fewer than four full costume changes. And it turns out the outfits are, impressively, some of her own handiwork. She says: “I am terribly hands-on. I am sure I drive my team crazy. “I do it myself and then bring the team in and they help me to realise the look. “I try to start with the shoes and then build up.” She also wears her original black coat and hat from the video to her 1997 classic, Man! I Feel Like A Woman! Shania says: “It was in a museum, so getting it back was a bit of a production. It needs security and everything to travel. “It’s really interesting. You don’t want to lose something like that.” Shania will take to the stage in Vegas throughout the year, as well as a series of UK summer outdoor gigs including playing Glastonbury’s Legends slot next month. So is she tempted by Sin City’s attractions? She says: “One of the rare things about Vegas is that you can blend in here. I don’t think people ever notice me. “I go to games, I go to restaurants, I just get out. I don’t have any gambling skills. I have no secrets to share. I accept that when I play I will probably lose money and if I win I am happy, but I don’t have any expectations.” Whether your chips or up or down, Shania, it’s safe to say you’ll always be a winner. lHIS new album Miss Italia is out next Friday, so where better to throw a party to celebrate than in a fancy Italian restaurant in West London? By NOA HOFFMAN NIGE VS HEALTH DIKTATS Farage battles UN FOREIGN bureaucrats should be banned from forcing freedom-loving Britain into more lockdowns, Nigel Farage says. The ex-Brexit Party chief warned the World Health Organisation must be urgently reformed so it is prevented from imposing major restrictions on sovereign countries. A new treaty due to be signed this month could give the United Nations agency sweeping powers to enforce social isolation measures on member states such as the UK. Mr Farage argued Britain should leave the WHO unless a major change was enforced. He told The Sun: “Put simply, this is a very dangerous organisation. “Now they want Britain and other countries to sign up to their Lockdown Treaty, which would give them the power to lock us down in any future pandemic — without the consent of the British people.” The organisation has been under fire for trying to expand its powers. Mr Farage argued it must return to its roots — focusing on information sharing and guidance rather than taking control from countries. The Reform UK honorary president also wants it to halve costs by cutting spending on luxury travel and thousands of staff. noa.hoffman@ Lock fear . . Nigel thesun.co.uk New Doctor Who is a work of fart WINDY KIDS & ‘BEATLES’ MAKE IT FAB AGAIN DOCTOR WHO returned to our screens on Saturday night with its first full series in three years and a new doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, playing the Time Lord. Despite the huge expectations, the first episode of the double bill on BBC One was only watched by 2.65million, with 3.19million tuning in for the second. But does the revamped Doctor Who and its new star deserve our attention? Here, TV Editor ROD McPHEE gives his verdict . . . IF Doctor Who was launched for the first time today, without the weight of its legacy, would it receive a rapturous welcome as a mouldbreaking sci-fi epic? On the basis of the first new episodes featuring Ncuti Gatwa, the answer might just be “yes.” With a backdrop of amazing sets dripping with Disney’s dollars, he delivered a natural, hugely energetic performance with tinges of the comic timing he honed in Netflix’s Sex Education. The ultimate sign of success was that, within minutes, you almost forgot The Doctor had been played by anyone else. And given the disastrous years under Jodie Whittaker, that was probably for the best. Thankfully Russell T Davies has binned all the eye-rolling wokery in favour of good old story-telling. The first episode, Space Babies, featured the obligatory monster who, it turned out, was made of the mucus from a gaggle of babies in a space station trapped in orbit. Brilliantly the babies came with flame-throwing buggies — and the ability to speak, of course. And when it came time to make their escape they did it by jettisoning the spacecraft using the methane from their nappies. Yes, that’s right, they were farted to safety. Which isn’t the most refined viewing, but at least restored the sense that this was a drama aimed at viewers of ALL ages. But viewers will wonder if Ncuti, and his sidekick Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) can maintain the interest after this brilliant start. The second episode in the double bill shown on BBC One on Saturday suggests they could. In The Devil’s Chord they headed back to the Sixties where they came faceto-face with The Beatles and Jinkx Monsoon, who’s a demon trying to steal music from the world. All of which is unquestionably simple, funny, clever and typically random. What it isn’t, thank the Lord, is preachy, lecturing or virtue-signalling. With Ncuti in the Tardis, Doctor Who could go back to when it was still one of the best shows on TV. Only time will tell. Doctor Who HHHH TOP DOC . . . WHEN Ronnie Field arrived at Parkhurst Prison at 2am on a stormy night, he was greeted in reception by the Kray twins, bearing gifts. The armed robber had never met Britain’s most infamous gangsters, but was welcomed by them at the request of his own gangland boss, Joey Pyle. While the crimes of twins Ronnie and Reggie have been recounted in countless books and films, underworld figures Pyle and Field escaped the glare of publicity. And that is the way they liked it. “We’re happy in the shadows with the money,” as Joey, once dubbed London’s don of dons, told his pal. Now, for the first time, 77-year-old Field has decided to reveal the secrets of his life as one of the country’s most feared bank robbers. And how he ended up in the dock with the twins’ older brother, Charlie Kray, for a plot to import millions of pounds worth of cocaine. He met some of the nation’s most infamous criminals, including Freddie Foreman and Charles Bronson, and had his life saved by notorious hardman-turned-actor Dave Courtney. Ronnie, whose book Nefarious — about his life of crime — is out this month, twice survived being shot, spent 23 years in prison and at one point was earning so much money from sticking up banks that he had a Harrods Bank account. But he does not want would-be gangsters to think there is anything glamorous about the life he led. Ronnie tells The Sun: “I think the obsession with the Krays is over the top. I knew them, I knew what they were like. “Youngsters idolise them. When youngsters say, ‘I’d like to do that’, I say, ‘No, you wouldn’t’. “Think of the time you are banged up, look at me — 23 years behind the door.” Violence, though, was in Ronnie’s upbringing after his birth in a workhouse in Epsom, Surrey. His dad Bill, a safecracker, left the family when his son was five and the boy faced a reign of terror from his grandmother and uncle Fred — until Ronnie almost killed them in revenge. He recalls: “My nan used to have a big walking stick with knobs on it — it was her favourite weapon, she beat us with that a lot. “I attacked her, I tried to strangle her. She left us alone after that.” When his 6ft 2in uncle, a coalman, raped one of his sisters, Ronnie admits: “I did him with a brick. I dropped it out of a window on his head, ran down the stairs and kicked the granny out of him.” After leaving school, Ronnie found work in the building trade and as a gardener, but gangster Pyle suggested a different line of employment. At first it was menacing business owners into handing over protection money. Then it was as part of a gang robbing shops, banks and bookmakers with sawn-off, pump-action shotguns. He says: “It was my job to go in first and come out last. I would always blow a bit of ceiling out — as soon as you do that, people go on the floor.” At one point he was robbing premises on a daily basis, sometimes even doing two jobs a day. Dad-of-two Ronnie says: “I had a good lifestyle — clubs, suits, hand-made shirts, hand-made shoes.” He bought a house in Sutton, South London, with cash, and a flash Rover V8 car. When his daughter Sadie got married, he made a cheeky reference in his speech to the money he had made from robbing banks. A smiling Ronnie recalls: “I said, ‘I would like to thank Barclays, Midlands, National Westminster. Without them, this wedding wouldn’t be possible’.” First wife Carol was not impressed by the underworld characters he socialised with and the pair divorced in 1976. That same year, Ronnie married his second wife Jackie, was nearly killed by a hitman and was jailed for the first time. The attempt on his life happened while he was walking through Tooting, South London. A man rushed at him, firing a revolver. He was hit in the foot and was able to shoot back, hitting the would-be killer in the stomach. They both escaped alive and Ronnie says: “I never found out what that was about.” But his luck ran out during a robbery at a clothing factory in Leeds, which was supposed to hold £100,000 in wages. The inside information was that they had to get through a reinforced metal door, but it was just wood. The bullets Ronnie blasted into it hit staff. Although not remorseful at the time, he now says: “My biggest regret is shooting them people — it was an accident, they didn’t deserve it. They weren’t like us. One of us gets shot, it’s the name of the game. Four of them were injured, but none of them died.” The gang managed to get out, remove their overalls, change cars twice and get on the motorway home. Little did they know that a young boy, suspecting they were robbers, had taken down the number plate of their second car. As they drove down the eerily empty carriageway, they saw a coach blocking their path and heavily armed police officers up on the embankment. Ronnie had such a reputation for violence that one of his accomplices asked him not to “lose your rag”. He replied: “Do you think I’m going to start with that lot up there?” Ronnie received a 12-year jail term for conspiracy to rob, robbery, aggravated burglary, two counts of carrying a firearm with intent and four counts of assault with intent to rob. Click of a finger and they were different people. They were dangerous until the day they died.” Prior to his release, Ronnie was sent to Maidstone prison, where he found himself on gardening duty with Charles Bronson, the man dubbed the hardest prisoner in Britain. Ronnie says: “He is as strong as anything. He is a very fair man, a very generous man. He should have come out years ago, but I don’t think he wants to come out.” Within a week of getting out himself, Ronnie was back committing robberies and then took up the offer of a chance to grab £10million of diamonds at Gatwick Airport. Ronnie felt something was wrong about the operation and his fears proved to be correct when his car was surrounded by armed officers. He claims the police had intended to shoot him but could not because of the public nearby. One officer, he says, told him: “You were very lucky because you were going today.” He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal and was jailed for three and a half years. This time he was sent to Belmarsh high-security prison in South East London, where gangster Dave Courtney saved his life during a riot. Ronnie was having a heart attack, but prison officers would not let Dave or anyone else come to his aid. He recalls: “Dave Courtney dragged me away. They started hitting Dave with riot sticks, but he just lay over the top of me. “Then he pulled me along until he got into the cell and then he kicked the door shut. Dave saved my life.” They remained friends on the outside and spoke two days before Dave killed himself at the age of 64 last October. Ronnie says: “I couldn’t believe he had done that. He’d just bought a car, bought a boat, spent £15,000 on his teeth and then he went and killed himself. “He was riddled with cancer. He never showed it. I spoke to him two days before and he was having a drink with us a couple of weeks before and he never mentioned it.” Ronnie Field’s final stretch inside came as a result of his friendship with Charlie Kray. The twins’ older brother told Ronnie that some gangsters in Newcastle who he had known for 20 years wanted him to supply them with cocaine. Unbeknown to Ronnie, Charlie had only met them two weeks earlier. Neither man realised that they were in fact undercover police officers. Ronnie insists that he was not a drug dealer and that Charlie was not a high-level criminal. “Charlie was a duck and diver,” he says. “He would buy loads of gear, stick it in his garage and sell it. “There was just a couple of kilos of cocaine I borrowed off someone. Neither of us were drug dealers. I don’t snort cocaine.” They handed over cocaine to the undercover officers, with Charlie promising to supply five kilos of the drug every fortnight in an operation which could have been worth £39million. Ronnie, aged 49 at the time, was jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine. It was to be the last time he strayed on to the wrong side of the law — even though he still gets offers of criminal work at the age of 77. Now a grandfather of six, he says: “After that I decided no more. I had loads of offers — I still do.” But the constant fear of being caught persuaded him to keep turning them down. Ronnie concludes: “People think it is easy. It’s not. “You always seem to get up early in the morning in case there is a knock on the door. “You always wait for the knock on the door.” l Nefarious: A Life In Crime, by Ronnie Field, with Martin Knight, is available from May 23 (HarperNonFiction, £22). FLYING HIGH . . . Richard and Jing in show ting Richard in a big drama too, because normally he’d be fronting one of multiple thrillers for streaming rival Netflix.” Richard appears opposite little known actress JING LUSI, who plays a British cop charged with ensuring he is delivered safely to the Chinese ITV drama Red Eye has proved such a huge hit that bosses are already planning a second series – before the first has even finished airing. The thriller stars actor RICHARD ARMITAGE as a doctor who has to survive a night flight to China, where he’s being framed by the authorities for a murder he says he didn’t commit. Viewers and critics have all hailed the six-parter — well, apart from our own Ally Ross — as it fills the high-octane Sunday night drama slot perfectly. A TV insider said: “Having a follow-up series is a no-brainer for ITV, though it is somewhat unusual to be asking for a sequel before the debut series has finished airing. “But bosses can already get a sense of how well it has been received by the viewing figures on their streaming service, ITVX. “It’s been quite a coup for them getpolice. During their flight, a series of things happen which make her start to suspect that the version of events she’s been presented with are far from the truth. Red Eye has benefited from the huge success of Hijack, another on-plane drama which dropped on Apple TV+ last summer, with IDRIS ELBA playing the central character. Its second series was confirmed in January this year. But Richard has jokingly remarked on how ITV had to make Red Eye without splashing the same amount of cash that the streaming giant did. He said that it was “a bit cheaper” than the other production. I reckon if he signs for the sequel, though, they might just up that budget a bit. tv biz A COUPLE who have been dating for nearly three years but never spent time together in person will meet face to face for the first time on a new Channel 4 series. The Nevermets follows six couples who met online and fell in love as they have the first chance to be together in person and test the legitimacy of their relationship. And while 90 Day Fiancéstyle shows like these normally spell doom for the lovebirds taking part that can’t be said for all the couples who appear in this new series. For Matt, 38, a virgin from Warrington who has only left the UK a handful of times, admits he was ready to propose to Maria, 28, from the Philippines, moments after they first meet. The Nevermets airs later this month on Channel 4. OMID DJALILI has revealed he was kicked out of sixth form at his school for appearing naked in classrooms in silly schoolboy dares. The comedian, who later faked his exam results to get into university after failing them six times, said the staff at Holland Park School in West London weren’t keen for him to return after one prank. Appearing on RHOD GILBERT’s Growing Pains on Comedy Central tonight, Omid said: “There were always people daring me to do things, and I kept doing them. “I loved Monty Python, that bit when TERRY JONES plays the piano naked, so one dare was to go in naked to play the piano, turn around and smile at the teachers and run out. “Later . . . I came back trying to grovel to get back into sixth form, they said, ‘No, you showed your hairy a**e one too many times, you’re not a good example’.” SHE has only just proposed, but now Whitney Dean is about to give birth. Actress SHONA McGARTY will walk down the aisle with her on-screen beau Zack Hudson (JAMES FARRAR) in EastEnders later this month. But there’s not much time to celebrate on their joint stag and hen do in this week’s episodes of the BBC One soap. Whitney is seen panicking as things take an unexpected turn when she’s trapped with Lauren Branning (JACQUELINE JOSSA) – who recently enjoyed a secret tryst with Zack behind her back. Just as Lauren prepares to come clean about the romp, Whitney’s water breaks – and all while they are locked inside a taco street food van. As their phones lose power and their cries for help go ignored, Whitney could be forced to welcome her little one in the back of a van, while Zack enjoys the party alone. NAKED AMBITION . . . TYLER WEST fancies a role in EastEnders – after perfecting his cockney accent to help girlfriend MOLLY RAINFORD. The actress joined the BBC One soap as Anna Knight last year, shortly before going public with her relationship with the DJ. The pair got together after taking part in the Strictly Come Dancing live tour. And spending time together at home means practising lines for her soap role. Tyler said: “I help Molly learn her lines, but I haven’t got a clue what’s going on with the show. “I play all the other characters, by the time I’ve perfected my lines she’s already learned hers. “I try to get into each role as much as possible, I put on different expressions and accents – and I love doing l the Phil Mitchell.” WILL MELLOR says he understands the Strictly curse after his turn on the BBC show with pro partner NANCY XU. At his Two Pints live show with RALF LITTLE, he said: “If you’re two single people and you work with each other six or seven hours a day every day, you’ve got all these emotions.” More listings: Pages 30 & 31 lCORRIE’S HELEN FLANAGAN has opened up about a break- down this year which forced her to quit stage show Cluedo 2. In OK! Magazine, out tomorrow, she said: “I was having a breakdown, I couldn’t travel alone. I needed my friends and family, and to be there for my kids.” LONG-running quiz show Eggheads is no more, says host JEREMY VINE. It began in 2003 on the BBC before switching to Channel 5 in 2021. Rumours have been rife the format had been shelved after the last time it was on our screens in April last year. Now Jeremy, below, has all but confirmed the chop. He told me: “I haven’t heard anything about Eggheads for a while now. “I think I have done about 1,200 shows – but whether we are doing any more I don’t know. “We last filmed an episode over a year ago. “It may well be we are doing it in 30 years’ time, who knows, but no immediate plans for any more.” The quiz saw a group of contestants take on the panel of ‘egghead’ experts to win money – just like ITV rival and copycat show, The Chase. So going away with culture vulture Rob Rinder was always going to be an eye-opener. The pair have joined forces for this fun three-parter where they experience “the original package holiday” – which is certainly NOT all-inclusive jolly in Mallorca. No, it’s their very own Grand Tour – in the style of the traditional “cultural odyssey designed to turn young upperclass 18th-century Brits into civilised, educated gentlemen.” Both Rob and Rylan claim they’re desperately in need of this trip – which starts in Venice, before heading to Rome and Florence – for life resets following their respective divorces. They touch briefly upon their personal heartaches, but this journey of discovery is more about Rylan showing his travel companion how to have fun – while Rob’s mission is to educate his pal, who “doesn’t know his arts from his elbow”, about the finer things in life. We see them explore art galleries, museums and a glass-blowing workshop – sparking more innuendo than you can possibly imagine. Plus, there’s a memorable moment for classical music fan Rob, who conducts Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in the church where it was first performed. Rob, though, is left lost for words when Rylan compares the tourist boom in Venice to the influx of visitors to Essex town Brentwood that was tv last night 30 ............... Monday, May 13, 2024

In a bid to ease Judge Rinder star Rob back into courting, of the romantic kind, he organises for the pair to go on a double date and ensures he dresses his cohost for the occasion – but fails to convince him to go “full Essex” by going sock-less. Rylan’s date reveals he’s also a part-time drag artist, which, of course, gives the pair the chance to dress up. It’s no problem for Radio 2 DJ Rylan, who embraces his inner Eurovision singer Conchita, but Rob isn’t so enamoured – especially as he reminds Rylan of EastEnders misery guts Pauline Fowler. Ouch. STUART PINK THE FORTUNE HOTEL, ITV1, 9pm: Following the huge success of The Traitors, games of deception are hot property. Could The Fortune Hotel be the next one to have us hooked? Host Stephen Mangan certainly hopes so, and tonight he welcomes ten pairs to a luxury Caribbean resort that oozes glamour and decadence. The contestants will need to have their wits about them and their eyes wide open. Each pair will be handed a briefcase – one containing £250,000, another with the dreaded Early Checkout Card, while the other eight briefcases are empty. Each duo will know what’s in their own case, as will viewers. two celebrity specials. How will singer Toyah Willcox, actor Richard Blackwood, Claire Richards from Steps, actress Sally Lindsay, DJ MistaJam and former Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt fare with their chart-based music knowledge from over the years? Continues tomorrow. ME AND THE VOICE IN MY HEAD, C4, 10pm: Stand-up comedian and former Hollyoaks actor Joe Tracini has been dealing with borderline personality disorder for the past ten years. In this one-off special, the son of comedian Joe Pasquale undergoes therapy. A brave, moving and very human insight. ADAM BERESFORD They will then undertake daily challenges before convening to decide whether to keep or swap their case – and whoever’s left holding the Early Checkout Card at the end of each day will leave. Who has the best poker face and who can persuade others to swap cases with them? With strong personalities and twists aplenty, this could get seriously addictive. Continues nightly until Thursday. THE JENNINGS VS. ALZHEIMER’S, BBC2, 9pm: For years, it was believed that Alzheimer’s had no familial link – until Carol Jennings came along. Her father and his four siblings were all diagnosed with the condition, and after lobbying doctors, Carol’s suspicion that it was hereditary was confirmed when she was told that she carried the gene for early-onset dementia. THE FAB DAILY TEAM: Digital Commissioning Editor Claire Dunwell, Contributing Editor Nikki Watkins, Senior Feature Writers Kirsten Jones and Alex Lloyd, Feature Writer Yasmin Harisha, Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend, Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale Edited by LYNSEY CLARKE and JOEL COOPER WE GO TO COUPLES THERAPY TO TRY TO KEEP THE PASSION BURNING EXCLUSIVE by ALISON JAMES ANYONE who follows Kate Lawler on social media will know she is searingly honest as she documents the ups and downs of her private life. From her struggles with postnatal depression to deflecting attacks by body-shaming trolls, the DJ and TV personality is not at all shy about baring her soul — or body. But her admission that she and hubby Martin “Boj” Bojtos are currently seeking help from a couples counsellor may come as a shock to fans. “Before we got married, we went to couples therapy regularly and we still do from time to time,” Kate confesses. “You talk things out and it helps you to see things from your partner’s point of view, and makes you think, ‘Well . . . actually maybe that was my fault’. It’s hugely beneficial.” Couples counselling is on the increase. Charity Relate reports a 30 per cent rise in the number seeking therapy over the past ten years. Kate, 44, previously revealed how it was Martin — with whom she has three-year-old daughter Noa — who first suggested they get help to stop them going “down a road that’s going to lead to anger and shouting”. It may not work for everyone. Friends star Courteney Cox recently revealed she and her long-term partner, Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid, “broke up within the first minute” of attending a joint therapy session in LA — although they later got back together. Suicidal thoughts But for Kate, who’s been with Martin for 11 years and married for two, it does work. “For me, marriage is about being there for each other — through the tough as well as the good times,” she says. “I like the challenge. We made a commitment to each other and you work through it. You need to find time for each other and that’s not always easy. “Right now, we’re planning to have a spa day together — my mum bought Martin a voucher for his 40th back in January.” Making sure to spend quality time with her man is clearly a struggle for the former Big Brother winner, who admits she and Boj definitely aren’t swinging from the chandeliers every night. “Of course we’re not!” she says with a laugh. “When you’re a parent, you have to accept you’re not going to have the time — or the energy — to do things you did before your child came along. “I guess it’s easier when you have a newborn and they’re going to bed early and sleeping through — but not when you have a toddler who wakes and comes into your room. “Martin is more, ‘Come on, we haven’t had time for ourselves for ages, let’s get in the bedroom’ than me. I take a bit of convincing.” In fact, when Kate recently tried to make time for nookie, disaster struck. She says: “I headbutted a door frame, nearly knocked myself out and ended up with a massive bruise on my head.” But Kate knows that putting her sex life on the backburner would be a huge mistake. “It’s so important to keep the magic and passion between you alive, even though it isn’t easy,” she says. “People say having a child is the hardest thing you’ll do, but keeping the magic alive and working at your relationship takes just as much effort. You have to give each other attention and show lots of affection.” Kate admits she and Martin have to consciously schedule one-on-one time together. “We always try and do a date night once a month,” she reveals. “But because we’re both tired with childcare and work, sometimes we’re both like, ‘I know that we’re supposed to be going out for dinner, but shall we just stay in?’. “It’s not just about sex, though. If you can manage to kiss and cuddle every day, at least you are making time for each other and showing you love each other. “Martin gave me a really big hug this morning and it made me feel great.” But it’s not just the pressures of marriage that Kate is so open about — she is famous for her generally warts-and-all approach on social media. Never was this more apparent than when she was struck down with crippling post-natal depression. She hit rock bottom in the weeks following Noa’s birth in February 2021, telling Fabulous how she struggled with suicidal thoughts as a new mum. She said then: “I thought, ‘I don’t want to be here any more. I’ve ruined my life. I’ve ruined Boj’s life’. You can’t really understand it but there were many times when I sat in the nursery feeling so low that I wanted to kill myself.” Kate believes being open about the trauma she experienced was crucial. “I told the truth and admitted I wasn’t coping,” she says. “I couldn’t understand why, before giving birth, everyone had told me having a baby was the best thing ever and that motherhood was great. I was like, ‘You lied to me! No one said it could be this bad’.” Happily, Kate is now fully recovered from her PND and, while family life today is undoubtedly hectic, is coping well. Body-shaming trolls She says: “I call myself a mother of three because, in addition to Noa, I have a rescue dog — a terrier cross called Shirley — and Baxter, an OAP border terrier. It can be stressful, but that’s life.” While Kate describes her daughter as “feisty and headstrong”, she’s certainly no pushover when it comes to parenting. “She loves TV and playing on her tablet, but we ration that,” Kate says. “She’s allowed to go on her tablet for three minutes in the morning as a reward for brushing her teeth, and we let her watch an hour of TV from 4.30-5.30pm while she has her tea. “Then it’s bath and bed. The tablet thing does worry me. But for now, she knows the rules.” As much as Kate loves being a mum, she tells us in no uncertain terms that her family is now complete. Asked whether she would like another baby, she says: says KATE LAWLER SURVIVORS . . Courteney and Johnny NEWLYWEDS . . . Kate and Martin in 2022 32 ............... Monday, May 13, 2024
Fab Daily Hot or Not GOING UP HOLLYWOOD’s sexiest starlets appear to be taking their inspiration from Last Of The Summer Wine’s Nora Batty, by stocking up on stockings. Trolls insisted she was encouraging anorexia. It was crazy — such double standards,” she says. “If someone is on Instagram showing their curves and grabbing their rolls, it’s all, ‘You go, girl! Well done, you!’. They’re celebrated, called real women. “Well, why can’t a real woman be a healthy size eight? I’ve varied between 8st 4lb and 8st 8lb since the Nineties. The only time I was bigger was on Big Brother in 2002. I put on a stone as I was sitting around for weeks eating junk and drinking sugary, alcoholic drinks.” Right now, Kate is 9lb heavier than her usual weight because she has been laid up after an operation for varicose veins. “I’m wearing compression stockings as we speak,” she says. “I had surgery because my legs were feeling very heavy and draggy. Since the op, I haven’t been able to exercise and I do feel rather out of shape. “I need to do more weights because I’m perimenopausal and my bones are becoming weaker. I wanted to believe him and tried to forget about it. But in the heat of this recent argument he admitted to kissing and fondling her and said she gave him oral sex. He has broken my heart but thinks I am overreacting. I feel so unloved. I broached the subject again and he was angry, saying it meant nothing. I don’t know what to think. 0 DEIDRE SAYS: You have every right to your feelings. Your husband broke your trust and this has damaged your relationship. If he wants this event to remain in the past, he needs to face it and own the reality that he’s hurt you badly. He is telling you that you’re overreacting because he wants to move on and forget about this episode. Unless he’s prepared to acknowledge the damage he’s done, you’ll never be able to rebuild the trust between you. He has to be prepared to apologise and to try to make it up to you. He made a mistake but he has finally owned up to it. That’s a positive start. My support pack Cheating – Can You Get Over it? will help you both. WHEN my boyfriend suggested experimenting with sex I told him I was open to it, but now he says he wants me to try anal and I’m feeling apprehensive. The last thing I want is to look stuck in my ways but I’m worried about the pain. I’m 24, he’s 25 and we have been together for two years. Before we met I had only ever slept with one other man and so I had very limited sexual experience. My boyfriend on the other hand had always been quite adventurous, but he made sure to take things slow. However, I was excited by the prospect of spicing things up until he brought up anal sex. While he would never force me to do anything, I want to be open to new experiences. He said he would take care and that I would probably find that I eventually enjoy it but the idea of it is scaring me. What if I can’t deal with the pain? 0 DEIDRE SAYS: If you don’t want to do something sexually, you don’t have to.There are other ways to spice up your sex life. My support pack 50 Ways To Add Fun To Sex can help with this. But if you do want to try, make sure that you are relaxed and take things slowly. Using a water-based lubricant is essential as oil damages condoms. Be gentle as the tissues surrounding the rectum are not elastic or designed for penetration like a vagina. GOAL IS TO DATE FOOTIE FRIEND BOYFRIEND WANTS ME TO EXPERIMENT IN BEDROOM Dear Deidre Dear Deidre IN the heat of an argument my husband admitted he’d cheated on me – after ten years of denying anything had happened. We were arguing because he thought a colleague of mine had been overly friendly and so he didn’t want me to go to work drinks. My husband said he “knew what men were like”, and something about the comment made me ask again about an incident ten years ago. This time he admitted the truth but I’m devastated that after so long of thinking everything was fine, he’s been hiding this secret. I am 36 and my husband is 38. We have been married for eight years but have been together for over a decade. Before we were married he’d go down the pub regularly with a mate. Then one day I received an anonymous call from a woman who said my husband had been chatting up someone and gone home with her. She said she was calling Dear Deidre I’VE got a crush on a woman I got to know through our shared love of football. I don’t know whether to tell her and see if our friendship could then grow into something more. I am 27 and she is 25. We get on really well and have similar interests and meet at our club’s home games. We talk regularly on Facebook and I make her laugh. She loves my comments on her photos. We have discussed the possibility of meeting some time for a drink but it never goes any further. I have dropped a few hints telling her I see her as more than just a friend, but either she hasn’t picked up on them or perhaps she doesn’t want to upset me if she doesn’t feel the same way. I think I have to let her know how I feel even if I don’t get the answer I want. At least I will have clarity on the situation. 0 DEIDRE SAYS: It is only natural to worry you might ruin your friendship and make things awkward if you tell her how you feel – but someone has to make the first move. If you don’t say something, you may always be wondering “what if”. Why not talk generally about dating and find out what she says about her love life? If she isn’t interested, make it clear you don’t want to lose her as a friend. At least then you will know where you stand. Good luck. He has taken pictures of a girl aged around 12 who was bending forward on the edge of a swimming pool, before diving in. He had zoomed in on her bottom. I discovered he had also done something similar to his 17-year-old sister when we were on holiday – he took photos of her on the beach, zooming in on all parts of her body including her breasts, bottom and privates. I am his 48-year-old dad. I asked him why he did this but he couldn’t really answer. He was in tears and very upset, but all I got back from him was that he didn’t know. My wife and I brought him up to respect women. Why has he done something so wrong? Does he need help? I cannot talk to anyone in the family about this. I feel so ashamed. My daughter knows about the pictures and I feel so sad for her knowing her brother did this. 0 DEIDRE SAYS: Yes. Your son needs help. His reaction suggests he’s very confused but also, reassuringly, knows his actions were wrong. Many young people are exposed to sexualised social media and desensitising porn very early, which could contribute to this behaviour. Explain how worried you are about him and that taking, possessing or sharing sexualised images of any person under the age of 18 is a criminal offence. It’s good you are talking, keep the dialogue going. We need to be open with our children about healthy sexual relationships, otherwise they learn from pornographers. JOINT RELIEF AND MOBILITY FEATURE T HREE months ago I had to go to A&E as I was in so much pain with my back. That’s where I discovered a ‘miracle cure’ that has made my back pain disappear once and for all! I was a postman before I retired, so was always on my feet, but since then I’ve not been as active and have put on a bit of weight. I started to get back pain about a year ago, just a few aches and pains when doing certain things. But after a few months it got so incredibly painful that even walk ing became almost impos sible. My wife Jenny was always on at me to go to the doctors, in the end I gave in. My GP checked my heart, my blood pressure and my weight. I was bracing myself for it… he said it was highly likely the pain was due to being overweight. He sug gest ed I lose a couple of stone and gave me a pres - cription for pain-killers. He said if that didn’t work to come back in three months. I felt pretty help less. I did try to, but losing weight seemed impossible when I could barely walk. The pain got steadily worse, it was excruciating and life was pretty miser able. Then one night, I struggled to get out of bed and didn’t make it to the toilet in time. I was mortified! That was the final straw for Jenny, she insisted we go to A&E as I needed immediate help. I’d never been to A&E before, and it was absolute mayhem! After 3 hours of waiting I finally got to see a nurse, then she sent me back to the waiting room. Another hour passed then I was called in for a blood test, then back to the waiting room. Then a couple hours later I was called to see a doctor, and you guessed it, back to the waiting room! It was like a round of ‘musical chairs.’ I was in agony and the hard seats didn’t help. Looking around, everyone else looked pretty miser able too, apart from a man in hand cuffs escorted by two police officers. He was as high as a kite and grin ning from ear to ear. I laughed to the guy sitting next me and joked “I’d love a bit of what he’s on! It might take my pain away”. That’s how I got talking to David, who was there with his wife who’d fallen and banged her head. He was quite posh and very chatty. It turned out that he came to the hospital a lot as his wife was battling with breast cancer. David asked what I was there for, and I told him about my back pain. My problem felt so insig ni ficant compared to his wife. He asked all about my back pain, how long I had it and how often it was painful. I thought he was asking just to be polite, he was that sort of guy, or maybe he was just killing time, let’s face it, we had plenty of that in A&E! David then told me he used to have the same back problems and I thought here we go, he was going to launch into every ail ment he’s ever had, like the lady I sat next to 5 hours ago! But he didn’t. Instead he told me that he no longer had any back issues at all. I asked if he’d had an opera tion, but he hadn’t, and that’s when he told me about a natural gel his physio at a private clinic had recom - mended. Before using the gel he struggled to get up and down stairs, and was deva - stated that he had to give up tennis and golf. But now he was back playing sports again and had no more back pain. He used the gel religiously twice a day. I was all ears, this sounded just what I needed. At that moment a doctor called in David’s wife so they got up, wished me good luck and before I knew it they were gone. I told Jenny what he said. “That’s amazing,” she said, “we’ll order some, it’s got to be worth a try, what’s it called?” Then I realised, he hadn’t men tioned the name, I was so deflated. What an idiot that I’d not asked him what it was called! I was kicking myself. After about another two hours I was called in to see another doctor, who said he would arrange for an X-ray the following week, and he pre - scribed some strong antiinflammatories. We were sent off to another waiting room to wait for the pre scription. It was such a drain ing day but I was glad that it would only be a few days until the X-ray, but I was still gutted that I hadn’t asked for the name of that gel. David looked as fit as a fiddle and it was hard to believe that not long ago he’d been struggling to walk. I nodded off at that point and next thing I heard was David’s voice saying “Goodness me, you’re still here!” He sat down next to us and wanted to know how we got on. They were having to wait longer as his wife had to have a CT scan, I felt so sorry for them. By this stage Jenny was nudging me, and before I got a chance, she asked him, “what’s the name of that gel you use for your back?” “Advance 7, sorry didn’t I mention it earlier” replied David. He reached into his pocket for his mobile and gave us the orderline phone number. Then my name was called and my prescription was ready so we said our goodbyes. It was very late when we got home but David said they had a 24-hour care-line so Jenny ordered three tubes. They had a great offer of a free tube and also gave us a 90-day risk free trial offering a full refund if the gel didn’t work. How crazy is that? It was a no-brainer not to try it. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive and I used it the minute it came through the letter box. It has a pleasant tingly sensation and I now massage it into my lower back twice a day. And guess what? It really did work as well as David said and day by day, week by week I feel more move ment, more flexible and less pain. The X-ray showed that I had osteoarthritis in my lower back, and there wasn’t much they could do about it apart from keeping me on pain-killers. Thankfully, thanks to David and Advance 7, I haven’t had to take a single pain killer or antiinflammatory. The gel has com - pletely cured my back pain. If it wasn’t for my mammoth 11 hour wait in A&E I would have never met David but I’m so thankful our paths crossed, it has truly made the world of difference to me. Jenny believes it was fate but whatever it is, Advance 7 is truly remarkable. Jenny uses it on her knees now, which no longer give her problems. I only hope David and his wife are well. ■ Advance 7 soothing gel is avail able in the UK exclusively from Health Solutions for £24.50 + p&p. They are running a dis - count offer, order 2 tubes and get 1 FREE full-size tube free. They also offer a 90-day moneyback guarantee, so if it doesn’t work you get a full refund. To order and take advan tage of this special offer call their FREEPHONE on 0808 156 4981, quoting promo tional code 97AD. Life was miserable I was in agony Then I heard a voice I haven’t had to take a single painkiller! “ It took an 11-hour visit to A&E to discover the cure for my back pain! ADVERTISEMENT Surprisingly it wasn’t down to tests or medical advice but a chance meeting in the waiting room!” 36 ............... Monday, May 13, 2024
WE will never again watch the Eurovision show, because it is just one big farce. Despite all the support the UK has given to Eurovision — and to contestants Ukraine, including welcoming and housing refugees from the war with Russia — there was not a single public vote for our singer, Olly Alexander, who did a great job. The winning song, by Switzerland’s Nemo, was dreadful. Eurovision is just such a political show. VALERIE RITCH St Ives, Cambs IGNORING the fact Israel is not part of Europe and should not be allowed to take part, the main problem with Eurovision is that musically it has contributed very little. It is Euro pop at its worst. Luckily, the UK is a world leader when it comes to creating cuttingedge music and should not be disappointed by another dismal result — the voting system is flawed. STEPHEN COLLINS Waterlooville, Hants SO Olly Alexander finishes nowhere near the top of the scoreboard at Eurovision in Sweden and gets not one vote from the viewing public. His song, Dizzy, was average and his stage act not suited to the viewing public — it was too sexual and not what the audience want to watch at a family-orientated show. He should grow up, and understand that Eurovision is not the place to try to shock the viewers. ROBERT BRYANT Basingstoke, Hants OUR Eurovision entry was disgraceful. Everything about it was wrong. MIKE BEAN Maidstone, Kent LET’S hope the Paris Olympics this summer are not tarnished by the same idiot protesters who tried to ruin the Eurovision Song Contest. These events are supposed to bring the world together, and their safety is paramount. BONNIE SMITH Sunbury, Surrey ANY Tory MPs defecting to Labour should lose their seats — and there should be by-elections. PETE LAMBELL Daventry, Northants IT seems that at least three more Tory MPs are in talks about defecting to Labour. But Labour’s plans, on everything from the economy to immigration, are pie in the sky. The Tories have work to do — and those wishing to defect should not be permitted to alter the course of this. STEPHEN TURNBULL Consett, Co Durham TORY defectors are like rats leaving a sinking ship, and if Labour cocks things up, I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to rejoin the Conservatives. You may find yourself on some exciting, unexpected detours. Shared laughter in an “M” location can be a strong passion clue. A person you rate highly at work has some two-way news. The sun and Uranus make a stand-out team today – and, yes, there is a place for you there. But first you need to stop playing so safely by the rules, and let yourself run a few well-managed risks. At work, this is how you can stand out from the crowd. In love, a partner can’t get enough of your impulsive new self. This is a day for feeling rather than thinking – put your own desires front and centre. Maybe you’ve tried to see the sense in a change, but aren’t sure – this is your moment to say so. In a lovebond, as Venus stands by Saturn, a shared past can matter more than any fantasy future. New love holds up a red card. Enjoy a morning of Taurus first, as generous planet Jupiter goes for gold in your own sign. You have that mix of good sense and good fortune that can make any plan, or partner, fall into place. So do try to be patient. A set of work rules may feel like they are reversing – but what’s left can work in your favour, so stay in touch. Friendships may fade in and out, but when they matter, they will be there for you. Remember this today if you are considering who to consult about a personal change. If you’re in love, keeping part of yourself hidden may feel safer, but actually puts your heart more at risk. If you’re single, an unusual “D” name can lead to love. Maybe some obstacles can crop up early in the day, to stop a deal going through as fast as you expect – your chart uses these to remind you to do all your research. Then the best way forward will not just open up, but speed up. A cash decision can change without you losing control – thanks to Mercury. While Venus wakes up some wild, almost uncontrollable, feelings, Saturn is a source of strength in your chart. Together these two positive planets steady some emotions you sense could get away from you. Instead, use them to propel you forward positively. The luck factor links to a set with one item missing. As planets of invention connect, one big idea can barge to the front of your mind – and refuse to budge. However unlikely this may seem at first, give it some thinking time, all day. By tonight, when an aimhigh moon revitalises your chart, you will know what to do. Passion is strongest when shared, but it must be equal. Getting creative with colours and styles can find you a whole new audience of fans – do follow where your ideas are leading you. When you talk straight into a camera, the right eyes will be watching, and waiting. Coupled up? Venus doubles love and Saturn triples loyalty. Single? Get closer to a rival football fan. Getting stronger together is a couple’s task today – lead the way by dropping all the minor details holding your commitment back. If the bigger picture is passion, that’s enough. If you start the day single, sampling a new café, or takeaway, can be how you first meet The One. You share a love of one specific food. Family is ready to work together, even if one person can’t say so. Start a process now, and expect everyone to join in later. Keeping a cash situation the same is fine if you too have not changed. But if you know you are a different person now, money moves also need adjusting. Luck and “R” make a golden link. Letting thoughts lead to decisions in their own time is your secret skill today – and even if there is some pressure to choose, do be sure to take as long as you need. Skimming through some words or pictures may be your usual style, but when you look more closely, you can see more than one route to get rich. Usyk faces off with the Gypsy King in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night in a blockbuster showdown to decide the undisputed heavyweight ruler. Ukraine’s WBA, IBF and WBO champ, 37, is a proud Cossack and honours his ancestors with traditional haircuts, moustaches, outfits, songs and dances. The devout father of four holds Ivan ‘The Wolf’ Sirko in particularly high regard, as he seeks to be the first unrivalled heavyweight king in 25 years. Sirko, a 1600s military leader, is immortalised in Cossack songs and poems. When SunSport asked what particular aspect inspires Usyk so much, he said: “All the enemies were afraid of him as he was a fighter. When he died, his hand was cut off by his soldiers and they took it to future battles and the enemies were afraid of it. “Because they knew it was the hand of Sirko.” Usyk is more interested in his faith and beliefs than exchanging trash talk with Brit Fury (below). The gap-toothed southpaw added: “He talks a lot of things, a lot of rubbish. “I pay attention to none of it. When I have a sword and a horse we can fight in a field like Sirko.” Usyk will also draw strength from the backing of his wife. Yekaterina Usyk has never missed one of her husband’s 21 professional wins. She would have missed this bout had Fury not blown the initial February 17 date by cutting himself in sparring during his preparation — as she was due to give birth. But the wound above Fury’s eye caused the bout to be delayed, baby Maria arrived and now her mum can be ringside once again to charge her man up for his biggest challenge. Usyk added: “My wife has never missed a fight. “The first fight was deliberately pushed back by God for her. My wife is my power.” Usyk tolerated two years of negotiations, bad deals and swallowed two Furyenforced delays to finally make this iconic fight. The numbers are huge, the payday might be £100million each — it could be double. Yet Usyk added: “Money is just a sideeffect of boxing. “I need this fight. I need to be world undisputed heavyweight champion.” By WALLY DOWNES Jr Priceless for Lauren LAUREN PRICE plans to unify the welterweight division after becoming Wales’ first women’s world champion. In only her seventh pro fight, Price added WBA, IBO and Ring Magazine titles to the Olympic gold won as an amateur in Tokyo three years ago. Price, 29, scored a comprehensive victory over Jessica McCaskill in Cardiff with the American unable to continue in the ninth round after an accidental clash of heads. It left the result in the hands of the three judges and Price was crowned champion by unanimous scores of 90-82. She said: “The 147 division has great fights out there and I want to go all the way. “I want to come back, defend my belts and be in massive fights. “I said all along it wouldn’t beat my Olympic gold medal, but that ring walk and the support I’ve received is definitely up there with it.” BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom predicts big things for Price. He said: “What we’ve witnessed is greatness, a superb talent and a complete fighter. “We’ve seen the start of something special.” By MARK MASON SPORTS ROUND-UP: RESULTS & FIXTURES 5 DAYS TO GO A REAL BELTER . . . FISILAU . . . big marker CRICKET SEAMLESS TRANSITION The And over TEN WHO MIGHT REPLACE JIMMY THE retirement of Jimmy Anderson has left the door open for a gang of new fast bowlers. The 41-year-old (below) got a tap on the shoulder from head coach Brendon McCullum because England want to build for the 2025-26 Ashes. And with Anderson and Stuart Broad — who quit last summer — now gone, who are the most likely lads to take over? Mark Wood and Jofra Archer are the fastest but injury-prone. Ollie Robinson is skilful but doubts persist about his fitness and attitude. Chris Woakes is superb in English conditions but he is 35. So it could be the next generation on whom England’s Ashes hopes rest, with Anderson perhaps mentoring them. Here we assess the contenders. These four have two-year central contracts which means they are very much on England’s radar . . . MATTHEW POTTS (Durham) Ben Stokes loves his county team-mate and he has taken a useful 23 wickets in six Tests with his bustling bowling. Big heart, big enthusiast. JOSH TONGUE (Notts) Showed plenty of pace in his two Tests last summer after an injury-hit career. Has yet to play for new county because of further injury. BRYDON CARSE (Durham) South African-born fast bowler has played 17 whiteball matches for England but no Tests. No mug with the bat, he has a first-class century. GUS ATKINSON (Surrey) The speedster went on England’s Test tour of India this year but did not play. England’s quickest bowler after Wood and Archer. Here are three with development contracts so England can keep tabs on their progress . . . JOHN TURNER (Hampshire) Another South African-born quickie who might have made his England white-ball debut last year but for a side strain. MATT FISHER (Yorks) Made his Test debut in the Caribbean in 2022 when Anderson and Broad were not selected. First played for Yorkshire aged 15. SAQIB MAHMOOD (Lancashire) Returning to action after a year out with injury. Has pace and is a reverse-swing expert. There is no reason why fast bowlers from outside the contract system cannot break into England reckoning. This trio could make the leap . . . SAM COOK (Essex) Known as ‘Little Chef’, he forms a high-quality county new-ball pairing with Jamie Porter. Has a first-class career bowling average of 19 — impressive. DILLON PENNINGTON (Notts) Like Tongue, moved from Worcester to Notts this season and has been taking useful wickets. Tall and strong. JOSH HULL (Leicestershire) Stands 6ft 7in and a left-armer — which makes him interesting. By JOHN ETHERIDGE Fisi call a must for England By ADAM HATHAWAY ROB BAXTER reckons Exeter No 8 Greg Fisilau has played himself into England’s touring squad to New Zealand. The 20-year-old got one over rival Alex Dombrandt, 27, as Chiefs hammered Harlequins 58-26 on Saturday to keep their top four hopes alive. Fisilau played for England A against Portugal in February but, unlike flanker Ethan Roots, has not been capped. Yet the pair combined to outplay Quins’ back row and may have booked berths on England’s trip to Japan and New Zealand in June and July. Exeter boss Baxter said: “There was a head-tohead about who is touring with England. Dombrandt and Chandler CunninghamSouth in their back row, Greg and Ethan in ours. “Greg put down as big a marker as he could. “He had a stand-out game, one of his best.” Exeter Wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso is certain to tour and scored two more tries. Baxter added: “We want to get him on the ball and when we do he is lethal.” Exeter have to win on Saturday at Leicester and hope results go their way for a play-off spot. Saracens are already there after their 41-20 win at Bristol. And Northampton have a home semi-final booked after their 90-0 walloping of woeful Gloucester. CONTENDERS . . . WILSON: I CAN CRACK THE CURSE By ROB MAUL KYREN WILSON is confident he can do what nobody has done before in snooker — and crush the Crucible Curse. But the Warrior faces a tough task to do that as no first-time world champion at Sheffield has ever retained the crown the next year. Wilson celebrated with his family as he beat Welsh qualifier Jak Jones 18-14 to lift the title. But the likes of Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby and John Higgins have all tried and failed to beat the curse. Wilson, 32, said: “Believe it or not, I was chatting with the guys I’m working with and it was something we talked about during the final. “We said we feel we’re in a good position and well capable of being the first one to stop that Crucible Curse. “I feel I’m quite well-equipped to handle it. I don’t feel like I’m a flash in the pan. “I feel that I have all the assets to handle any situation. I feel I can give it a good shot.” Wilson, a father of two, was never going to go to bed early after the best night of his professional life. The Kettering star (right) partied so hard with friends and family right through to a 7.30am breakfast fry-up at the hotel. He danced with snooker MC Rob Walker, who donned a pal’s pink shorts when his black trousers accidentally split. When the new world No 3 did nick some shut-eye, his kids took a photo of him asleep with the world trophy lid on his face. And when he finally got home, the enormity of what he had achieved as the 23rd person to lift the crown hit him the next day. He said: “When I got home, I went to the bathroom, scrolled my phone and burst out crying. I was absolutely inconsolable for a second. “I just couldn’t believe it. I still don’t think it has sunk in. It’ll take a few weeks, for sure. “There’s a beautiful little moment where my son Finley actually says: ‘Dad, you’re a world champion’. That really hit home. It made me fill up a little bit. “On the Tuesday night. I took the trophy to show everyone at our local club. “They were doing free champagne for everyone, celebrating my win. We got in there at 6.30pm — and left at 12.30am!” Some of his £500,000 winnings might be used on purchasing a property in Portugal so his dad Rob — who has Multiple Sclerosis — can benefit from a warm climate. Wilson added: “With my dad’s health, it’d be great to have a permanent property where he can book a flight and head out to the sunshine when he needs it.” CHAMPION . . . Wilson celebrates world title win Mike’s pain over BOSS Mike Eccles said nobody in sport has felt London Broncos’ pain after they celebrated a first win since returning to the Super League. Sloppy second-bottom Hull suffered a ninth defeat on the trot as they were embarrassed by the basement boys. London came up but the grading system — as opposed to on-field relegation — means they are set to drop regardless of results. And Eccles said: “No one really knows what we’ve been through since promotion. “It’s not just another win — that is massive. You get promoted and have a plan to build and that’s taken away. “No one in the game, or in any sport, has ever experienced that.” Hull interim boss Simon Grix said: “They had fight and spirit in spades.” Hull led 18-16 after 53 minutes then had Jordan Lane sin-binned. The Broncos punished them with further tries from Jarred Bassett and Lee Kershaw before Oli Leyland capped the win. United’s triumph should ease pressure on boss Marc Skinner. Following their second-placed finish in the league last term, his team are facing a fierce battle with Liverpool to finish fourth in the top tier. Prior to yesterday’s win, a 1-0 loss to their Kop rivals saw Skinner come under fire from some fans. His side are fifth in the WSL ahead of Saturday’s final league game of the Worried Djok will see doc after KO By SIMON SHAW NOVAK DJOKOVIC is set to undergo medical tests following his shock exit from the Italian Open. Djok lost 6-2 6-3 in just 67 minutes to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo — two days after he was accidentally hit on the head by a metal water bottle. A video on social media showed the six-time champ fall on the floor after being struck by the bottle, which came from the stands, as signed autographs following his win over Corentin Moutet. And in his last-32 match against Tabilo yesterday, the Serbian world No 1 committed 22 unforced errors, served five double faults and failed to create a single break point. Djokovic, 36, said: “In the video, you saw it very clearly. It was a very unlucky situation for me. “It was an accident where that guy leaned over and the bottle dropped from his rucksack and landed on my head. “That has really impacted me a lot. Half an hour, an hour of nausea, dizziness, blood, a lot of different things. “I managed to sleep OK. I had headaches. “The next day was pretty fine, so I thought, ‘It’s OK’. Maybe it is OK. Maybe it’s not. “The way I felt on the court was like a different player entered my shoes. “Just no rhythm, no tempo, no balance whatsoever on any shot. “It’s a bit concerning. I didn’t do any scans or any tests. “Right now, I feel like I should, so I will and let’s see what’s happening.” Djok saved three break points in the opening game, two with aces and the third with a sublime drop shot from behind the baseline, only to serve a double fault after Tabilo created a fourth breakpoint opportunity. Two brilliant winners then gave the Chilean a second break for 3-0 and the 26-year-old showed no signs of nerves as he served out for the set after just 31 minutes. Djokovic started the second set with consecutive double faults to lose his serve again. Tabilo continued to hold serve and another Djokovic double fault on the first match point sealed the biggest win of the 29th seed’s career. Shocked Tabilo admitted: “I came on court just trying to soak it all in and now I can’t believe it. “I was just trying to keep my nerves in, keep swinging.” DJOKOVIC . . . scans ELLA TOONE’S Wembley wonder goal opened the floodgates as Manchester United clinched Women’s FA Cup glory. It also saw them win their first major trophy since United’s women’s side were re-established six years ago after a 13-year hiatus. Rachel is clearly making her Marc By SANDRA BROBBEY MARC SKINNER hopes Rachel Williams’ efforts in Manchester United’s FA Cup win have silenced doubters who questioned the club’s move for her. And the Red Devils boss avoided joining criticism of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as the club’s minority shareholder came under fire for skipping yesterday’s final. Skinner led United’s women to a 4-0 win over Tottenham at Wembley — their first major domestic trophy as well as his first Women’s FA Cup win. But Sir Jim was absent, the Ineos chief instead pictured at Old Trafford ahead of the men’s 1-0 home loss to Arsenal. He later shared a congratulatory message via Ineos’ official X account. And Skinner, 41, said: “We had more than enough representation from our club here. “I’m only excited about what Sir Jim can bring to Manchester United. “The messages have been passed throughout all the time. It’s constant support and the players were messaged.” Skinner has faced flak from fans at times this season — with his side set to finish outside the WSL’s top three and miss out on a Women’s Champions League spot. The United manager’s current deal is up this summer but he is now eyeing an extension. On the chances of that, Skinner said: “I hope so but we’ve created history — I have got to live in that moment. “I believe in myself fully. I’m still a baby in terms of my career. I’ve got lots to achieve in this game. “I feel the club is in fantastic hands and hopefully I’m here to see that forward.” Ella Toone hit United’s opener, with Williams adding a second before Lucia Garcia’s double. Skinner was especially pleased to see Williams, 36, on the scoresheet after starting her ahead of Nikita Parris. The United boss feels Williams has vindicated the decision he made to sign her from Tottenham two years ago. Skinner said: “Do you remember all that rubbish we got when we signed her? Well, she’s turned that around. “She’s a fantastic character. I wanted to start the game fast and make sure Tottenham couldn’t get rhythm. “Rachel will chase and put her body on the line. “I hope she goes down as an iconic player for Manchester United.” SKINNER . . . deal hope MAN UTD 4 TOTTENHAM 0 ABEATING tone for Wembley romp season against Chelsea at Old Trafford. Williams, 36, bagged United’s second goal with a towering header. And she added: “We don’t like to admit it but it does mask over the issues we’ve had. We have had some ups and downs this year. “That’s for Marc and the backroom staff, to be like, ‘Right, this is what we have to do in the summer’. “We are going to have to change things next year. We have had some injuries, three or four ACLs, at the start of the season. “That’s football, teams go through transition. You have a good year, you have a dip. “Next year we might come back bigger, better and stronger and — who knows? — we might just be lifting the title.” One high-profile figure missing at Wembley yesterday was United shareholder and Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe. He snubbed the FA Cup showdown in favour of watching the men’s team lose 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford. It seemed a baffling decision not to travel down to London — with Avram Glazer attending at the national stadium. Unlike Ratcliffe, a few of Tottenham’s top brass and club legends joined the 76,082-strong crowd. Club icons Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa were spotted in the stands alongside Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. And while the scoreline made for a disappointing afternoon for them, neutrals will have been happy with the goal rush. In a season in which Skinner has come under increased scrutiny, this showdown provided the chance to silence the doubters. The head coach opted to start veteran Williams — a former Spurs striker — in a front three which also included Leah Galton and Garcia. In a fairly balanced first half, with Tottenham initially looking solid in defence, the WSL golden oldie showed glimpses of her aerial threat. She headed over the bar in the fourth minute before sending another header wide eight minutes later. Tottenham had little joy in the final third early on, with Martha Thomas heading over in the tenth minute. And their resistance was broken at the other end when Toone netted that absolute worldie. She fired into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area in first-half stoppage time. Things went from bad to worse for Robert Vilahamn’s side in the second half with United netting a quick-fire double in the 54th and 57th minutes. First with Williams outleaping Spurs’ back line to head home from Katie Zelem’s free-kick. It was the 36-year-old’s first FA Cup final goal in 12 years — the last coming in that Birmingham victory over Chelsea. Then Garcia punished a dodgy pass from Spurs keeper Becky Spencer to slot into an empty net. AFOLAYAN . . . going up By NOEL RICHARD DAPO AFOLAYAN fired St Pauli to promotion — and completed his meteoric rise from non-league to the Bundesliga. The former West Ham and Bolton striker, 26, scored twice in a 3-1 win against VFL Osnabruck to clinch his side’s place in the German top flight for the first time in 13 years. Afolayan will be going head-to-head with Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich and champions Bayer Leverkusen next season. But just six years ago the former Chelsea academy starlet was turning out for Solihull Moors in the National League. After securing promotion, he posted on X: “NON LEAGUE TO THE BUNDESLIGA!!!!! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.” Harrow-born Afolayan spent 18 months at Moors before being snapped up by West Ham in 2018. But after just one game in a three-year spell with the Hammers, he switched to Bolton where his form caught St Pauli’s eye. Their promotion means Bolton will receive a bonus as part of the £500,000 deal that took him to Germany in January 2023. Kane’s hopes of breaking the Bundesliga scoring record suffered a major blow when he was forced to sit out BAYERN’S 2-0 victory over WOLFSBURG. The England ace has 36 league goals but goes into the final round of games five shy of Robert Lewandowski’s record of 41. Carlo Ancelotti’s side marked the club’s 36th league title with a parade around the streets of the Spanish capital before gathering on a balcony looking over the Cibeles Fountain. Boss Ancelotti (right) led a chorus of the club anthem before Toni Kroos and skipper Nacho Fernandez made speeches. Bellingham was then beckoned over to speak, prompting Vinicius Junior to burst into laughter. But the Three Lions star drew a huge reaction when he made a brief speech in fluent Spanish — and vowed to add the Champions League trophy to the domestic success when Los Blancos face his old club Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley next month. He said: “Many thanks for your support and the love shown this season. We’ve got one more big game at Wembley. Yet he did it again on Saturday at Fulham, floating like a ballerina to score twice in a 4-0 victory that pushed Manchester City a step closer to a record fourth straight Premier League title. The defender has now hit five goals in his last seven games as City have moved to within two wins of a sixth crown under Pep Guardiola. The 22-year-old Croatian was signed in the summer for £77million from RB Leipzig. That is £8.5m less than arch-rivals Manchester United paid for Antony — who has hit ONE Prem goal this season. Since the start of April, Gvardiol has scored more goals than Bukayo Saka, Son Heung-min and Mo Salah. The first City goal of his career only arrived in the draw at Real Madrid last month, 11 months since his previous in a Leipzig shirt. Since that Bernabeu tie, he has netted against Luton, Nottingham Forest and now two against Fulham. Guardiola said: “When you talk about football and life, they are about confidence. He has had lots of games. We often forget this Premier League season is his first. “I would say it is not easy to handle it and at the beginning he struggled a little bit. “He comes to the team who won the Treble and at the beginning he was a little bit shy, saying, ‘I don’t want to ruin all the structure that they have’. “It is a question of time. He has been here for 14 months but it’s like he has been here many years, proving to himself that he can do it and play with us.” It emerged very early on during his time at the Etihad that Gvardiol would be used mostly as a left-back despite not playing there since his Dinamo Zagreb days in 2020. A period of uncertainty followed, with Gvardiol looking a fish out of water in his new position. But after productive talks with manager Guardiola, things fell into place in the new year. Now he is banging in goals, including the two on his weaker foot in west London — not bad for a centre-back. The Croat even had a chance of becoming the first defender in Prem history to score a hat-trick had he been a bit more forceful in talks over Julian Alvarez’s late penalty. Guardiola added: “Everyone had three days off after Wolves, but he was the only one that went along to the training centre to recover. His focus is football. He wants to be better and better. We have made an incredible signing for many, many years to come.” Gvardiol’s surprise red-hot form in front of goal suggests City have all bases covered en route to Premier League glory. It would be their eighth Prem title and tenth top-flight crown in total. Guardiola added: “One step at a time. I haven’t had time to see Fulham now, much less Tottenham. “Now we are focusing on Spurs, Spurs, Spurs. When it is not in our hands, like it was a month ago, but now it is not the case. “If you ask me if I wanted United to win? Yes, of course. Please. It is not about that. “Arsenal wanted Fulham to draw with us. That is normal. “We have to win our games. We know we have two games left. If we win the two, it is six points and we are the champions. “That is all we have in our heads. It is Spurs, Spurs, Spurs. “And after that, if it still depends on us, it is West Ham, West Ham, West Ham. “After that, of course we will know the result and we will have to see for ourselves.” *AND HE’S READY FOR A TITLE PARTY! POST ’N WIN . . . defender Gvardiol celebrates netting City’s third goal FULHAM READING Jos has Pep in his step s FORMER striker GORDON DAVIES gives his views on former clubs Fulham (1978-84 & 1986-91) and Manchester City (1985-86). AS a former striker I would have been proud to have scored Josko Gvardiol’s opener at Craven Cottage on Saturday. The way he danced through the Fulham defenders — after a quick one-two with Kevin De Bruyne — and then applied the most deft of finishes was so impressive. Even more incredible that he is part of boss Pep Guardiola’s trusted defence and can score a goal like that. But that is what makes Guardiola the best football manager on the planet. His ability to bring in players and then take them up another level is pretty extraordinary. It says so much for the professionalism of his players that when Gvardiol could easily have stepped up and taken the penalty for a hat-trick, he declined to make sure the more regular taker Julian Alvarez did so instead. In my lifetime of watching and playing football, I have witnessed Liverpool dominating the 80s and Sir Alex Ferguson’s 13 Premier League titles more recently. But to think Pep could out-stat Fergie this week and win an unprecedented fourth English top-flight title in a row is something I never thought for one second I would ever see. The word I use for this City side is ‘juggernaut’. However, they still know they have two more games to win — at Tottenham and West Ham at home — to fulfil that record. For Fulham this has been a decent season of steady progress despite Saturday’s result. By GRAEME BRYCE JOHN McGINN knows Aston Villa fans are desperate to roar their team over the finish line to qualify for the Champions League against Liverpool tonight. He is also aware Manchester City can do them a massive favour by beating Tottenham tomorrow to officially book Villa a place at Europe’s top table. But having come so far under manager Unai Emery this season, McGinn says his team-mates are determined to secure fourth without a little help from their friends. The Villa skipper, 29, said: “It is up to us to deliver now. “The fans can wave as many scarves as they want, shout our names as loud as they can but it is up to us to find that fire and get us over the line. “We are so close. We don’t want to stop short. “It is going to be a very, very tough game against Liverpool, we know that. “But we also know what we have to do. It is in our hands. “There has been a determination to get across the line for five or six weeks now. “That is the frustrating thing, we could have had it wrapped up before now. “But the Premier League is extremely difficult. We have certainly had some setbacks but this group will keep fighting. “We owe the supporters a performance. “We owe ourselves a performance after the effort we’ve given throughout the season, the graft every single day.” Villa are limping towards the Prem finish line with a squad PREMIER LEAGUE 11 ARSENAL kept 11 Premier League away clean sheets this season — only Chelsea (12 in 2008-09) have kept more on the road in a single campaign. Boss Emery is likely to be without NINE first-team players tonight and have only 11 fit senior players to select from. But McGinn is not the type to look for excuses. The Scot said: “It has been a long hard season with many bumps on the road but certainly one to be proud of. “We have the crucial benefit of other results potentially going our way but we want to get the job done ourselves. “We want to get into the top four, which would be an unbelievable achievement, though it won’t take the disappointment away from losing in Greece on Thursday to Olympiakos.” McGinn believes Villa failed to live up to their tag as favourites to lift the Europa Conference League. And it is a sign of the growing expectation within Villa Park under Emery’s reign, that McGinn views their first European semi-final for 42 years as a cause for regret rather than satisfaction. He admitted: “We are extremely disappointed. “We fought on Thursday but it wasn’t enough. On another night we could have turned it around. It just wasn’t to be. “Unfortunately, we have to wish Olympiakos all the best. “We have underachieved. We know that. “But we will learn from it and will be back better and stronger next year.” MAC ON MISSION Aston Villa v Liverpool JURGEN KLOPP has mixed emotions ahead of his final away game as Liverpool boss. Villa Park hosts his Reds side tonight and the stadium saw a key moment in their 2019-20 title-winning season. Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane scored in the final three minutes to snatch a 2-1 win over Villa in November 2019. But the next season they returned as champions and were incredibly thumped 7-2. Klopp said: “It was a really special game when we won 2-1. At half-time we had a little situation in the dressing room, a little argument between two players. “But you will not get the names from me. And then we could calm it down and turned the game around, which was really special.” The two players who clashed at the break were actually the two goalscorers. Klopp added: “That was a very important one, a great feeling after the game.” With the title gone, nothing is on the line for third-place Liverpool but they could dent Villa’s hopes of taking fourth. Klopp added: “We all know how important it is for a club to qualify for the Champions League, how difficult it is to do that.” Klopp has final Park and ride By TONY LITTLE 8pm & 48............... THE BIG-MATCH VERDICT THERE was a time Manchester United used to laugh at Arsenal for celebrating a place in the top four. Yet the Red Devils are now just battling not to be a total laughing stock themselves at the hands of their old enemy. It is their one-time rivals jostling for the biggest spoils now, while United take solace by simply not being battered by the Gunners. As Erik ten Hag trudged across the pitch in the pouring rain at the end of the match, with water hosing through the Old Trafford roof on to the seats below, the club’s TV station quickly switched to show footage of their women’s team celebrating an FA Cup final win over Spurs. Anything to not have to spend time dissecting another home humiliation. It was an afternoon when the limitations of their football club were horribly exposed on their own big stage. At least they were not shrinking into the wings as they had done in the 4-0 new low at Selhurst Park last Monday. Boss Ten Hag said: “You need a reaction and the players gave the reaction.” So a reaction now from United is to lose only 1-0 to Arsenal at home? Even with injuries, can that be right? He added: “It shouldn’t be like this, you are absolutely right but then I return to all the problems we have, when you then analyse the performance then you have to see that we were competitive but that is not the way we want, of course. “We have to win, United have to win every game but at this moment as a club we are not in this position and definitely not this team with all the injuries we have. “You can’t progress a team in certain key areas, so many injuries, it’s like swimming with your hands behind your hope and a bewildered fanbase that must be wondering how things could collapse so far and so quickly. The previous darks days under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were not as dark as this. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired 11 years ago the club has not contested the title. Five times in the top four and twice in the runners-up spot, but way adrift, with a few bits of silverware thrown in. That’s the glory years for a club like Tottenham. But of course more is expected here and those expectations have finally overwhelmed this club and pushed them into what could end up being their lowest finish in Premier League history. When you looked at that team-sheet against Arsenal, it was little wonder United were odds-on to get beaten on their own ground. The fact they did not lose by a heavier margin than that one early goal owed much to the fact that the Gunners were able to rattle along in second gear and still be comfortably the better side. Hosts United never looked like scoring, Rasmus Hojlund may as well not have been on the pitch. Casemiro at the back, once again wandered around like someone looking for his lost dog in the woods. The fact that Antony could not even get into this starting line-up tells you everything you need to know about one of the most expensive buys in the club’s history. Watching on was Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Even working for a petro-chemical giant has got to get you jumping out of bed with more excitement than watching this lot. For a successful man like part-owner Sir Jim, a 1-0 home defeat might not be marked down as a positive. WET DEVILS . . . the Old Trafford ‘waterfall’ hits the stands after the match GRIM JIM . . . co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe watches the defeat back and you have to keep your head above the water level, that is what we try to do. “We are still in a Cup final. This is good. But if you want to progress a team you need fit players and you see our opponent today, they had only one not 100 per cent match-fit player, and we had so many.” Ten Hag has understandably been emphasising an unprecedented injury crisis at the club this season coupled with the fact that they have reached that FA Cup final all as a case for his defence. Still, this was defeat once more. The 19th of the season — the club’s worst tally in 46 YEARS. They have won only once now in their last nine games, unless you count the penalty shoot-out in the FA Cup semifinal after they had collapsed from 3-0 up against Championship Coventry City. That is now 82 goals conceded this season — the most in 53 YEARS. Their goal difference is currently minus-four, one worse than 1973-74 when they were relegated. ETH’s men are eighth now, out of the European places, and will probably need at least four points from their final two games to qualify next season — unless they beat Manchester City at Wembley. Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday, eighth versus sixth, is key for both. It is 50 years since the club dropped out of the top flight, just six years after winning the European Cup. The mood now cannot be much different to how it was then. One that is lacking in By NEIL CUSTIS ERIK’S REIGN . . . ARSENAL recorded their 27th win in the Premier League this season — their most in the competition (surpassing 26 in 2001-02, 2003-04 and 2022-23). Only twice have they ever won more, both in 42-match campaigns: 29 27 in 1970-71 and 28 in 1930-31, both title-winning sides. MANCHESTER UNITED lost for the 19th time this season, their most since 1977-78 (also 19). They also suffered their ninth defeat at Old Trafford — their most in a single campaign at home, along with 1920-21, 1930-31, 19 1933-34, 1962-63 and 1973-74. 14 PREMIER LEAGUE MANCHESTER SQUEAKYTrossard seals nervy win ’n long way to wrecking Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool farewell tour, in the FA Cup and in the league, but with their injury list lengthening and morale plummeting, a repeat looked unlikely. The Dutchman, dressed appropriately in sackcloth brown, named a starting XI that looked every bit as mid-table as United are. Arsenal were shaky from the off — Thomas Partey was robbed on the edge of his own box, Declan Rice played an absent-minded back-pass and David Raya slipped — but United never capitalised. And on 20 minutes, Arsenal were ahead. Ben White — watched by his old mucker, England No 2 Steve Holland — sent a fine pass down the right flank for Kai Havertz. The satin-booted German slipped in a low cross and Trossard darted in from the left, with Aaron WanBissaka an innocent bystander as the winger prodded home. Casemiro was dawdling to play Havertz onside in the build-up but then United’s central defence consisted of a midfielder whose legs have gone and Jonny Evans, 36. Still, Arsenal struggled to string two passes together and United were having their moments — an Amad Diallo run halted by a trip from Partey, an Alejandro Garnacho cross-shot pushed out by Raya. Diallo and Sofyan Amrabat were good and whatever Ten Hag says about injuries, those two could have played more often this season. After the break, it remained LEO SLAYER . . . Trossard finds the net on 20 minutes, which proved enough for the Gunners THIS is what Manchester United supporters used to recognise as ‘Squeaky Bum Time’ back in the era when they were involved in title races. On a tense afternoon at Old Trafford, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal felt the full heat of Manchester — the humidity of the weather and the exhaustion that comes from chasing Pep Guardiola’s relentless City. But they won, through a first-half Leandro Trossard strike — their fifth straight Premier League success — and ensured that this season’s compelling race will head to the final day. Before that, the Gooners must hope against hope that their bitter rivals Tottenham can trip up Pep Guardiola’s men tomorrow night to give Arsenal the whip hand heading into next Sunday afternoon’s final fixtures. Then, Arsenal will host Everton and City will entertain West Ham. A first title in 20 years remains a long shot for the North London club. You would not want to rely on a favour from the flagging Spurs or a Hammers side whose supporters have already waved goodbye to manager David Moyes. Arsenal were fretful and fitful here. United reacted well to Monday’s 4-0 humiliation at Crystal Palace and deserved a point. But Arsenal clung on, as champions must do — as any team that wants to even get close to City must do, too. A few weeks ago, it looked unlikely that Arteta’s side would win away at both Spurs and United during their run-in. But they have overcome those two most significant obstacles and are still likely to fall short. Arsenal are unbeaten away in the league in 2024, dropping points only at the Etihad, where they played for a goalless draw and got one. It has been impressive stuff but probably still not enough to get their noses in front of Guardiola’s state-funded perma-champions. This was a terrible game of football. United were much improved, smarting after Selhurst Park, and Arsenal were sloppy and nervy. But six years on from Arsene Wenger, Arsenal are light years ahead of anywhere United have ever been during the 11 years since the exit of Sir Alex Ferguson — the man who added ‘squeaky bum time’ to football’s phrasebook. As a thunderstorm broke over Old Trafford in the dying minutes, the stadium roof leaked and Arsenal’s supporters sang in the rain. “Trossard again, ole, ole!” they chanted over and over. The Belgian winger — signed from Brighton in January 2023 as a Plan B after Chelsea gazumped them for Mykhailo Mudryk — has proved an astute buy. Trossard has scored four times in his last five appearances and six in nine, having usurped Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank. United have won just once in their last eight league matches and that came at home to Sheffield United, one of the worst teams in Premier League history.
