Once a sensible diesel family wagon, this E46 Touring has been transformed into an estate with some serious attitude. Words: Elizabeth de Latour Photos: Deniss Podnebess B MW’s Tourings always get a lot of love, especially among the modified community. It’s the saloons that you will always see out in force at shows, but that’s precisely what makes Tourings stand out in a sea of four-doors. It’s hard to put your finger on precisely what it is about estates that makes them so great, but perhaps it’s the appeal of that sensible, practical car turned into something that you wouldn’t expect. That’s why fast estates are such hot property, because you can have a big family wagon with space for shopping and kids and whatever else, combined with absolutely monstrous power and performance. It’s the concept of having your cake and eating it made tangible in rapid wagon form. Or the idea of the sensible diesel 3 Series Touring, designed with economy and space for the occasional small sofa in mind, now turned into an airedout show car with an air-force flavour, courtesy of owner Maksims Panfilovs (@maximo_e46). For Maksims, BMWs and modding them have long been a big part of his life, and as the co-owner of the Riga Customs workshop, where they do wrapping, body kits and custom mods, exhausts, suspension, brakes and more, that personal passion has become a profession. “I've been into BMWs since I was 15 or 16 when my older brother had an E34 525tds, and we modified it together. BMW gives you feelings no other cars can give,” he adds, with a smile, and we know about those feelings all too well. That E34 became Maksims' first car when his brother gifted it to him after he bought himself another car, and that cemented his passion for the blue and white roundel. Since then, he's owned six E36s, an F31 3 Series Touring, an F07 5 GT, and two E46s, including this one, and very few of those have been left standard.
54 TOTAL BMW E46 330d TOURING “My previous project was an E46 wagon,” Maksims tells us, “it was wrapped and on coilovers, before it became mainstream,” he grins, and while you might be wondering why he went from one modded E46 Touring to another, there was a very good reason for it. “I was afraid that E46 I had was too rusty to proceed and invest in,” he laments, “so I started to search for mint E46 wagons all across Europe. I found one in the UK five years ago. It had a perfect body and interior, a good engine, and an almost dead automatic gearbox,” laughs Maksims. “It was right-hand drive and Orient blue, and my plan was to move all the mods over from my old E46 first, then make it wider, add air suspension and some power later,” he says, and one glance is all you need to tell you that it’s been a very busy and successful five years. The engine was in good condition, but I decided to fully rebuild it to make sure it can handle the increased power. I added a larger intercooler, a straight-through exhaust, and a chip and the turbo is now pushing 1.9 bar of boost instead of 1.5 That glance will also tell you something important – that this ex-UK E46 is no longer right-hand-drive. “I started by converting it to left-hand drive and adding a quicker steering rack, then I refreshed the brakes and suspension, and changed all the old rubber bushes to poly ones,” and with this first lot of work taken care of, Maksims could now get stuck into the mods. His first port of call was the suspension, and while he initially got the E46 on coilovers, in his second year of ownership, he made the move to air as planned, and he’s never looked back. “I am running HSD Mono Pro coilovers with Antelope FAB bags and AccuAir management – I wanted the car to be as low as possible at events but also fully street-drivable, as it’s my daily,” he grins. Despite its looks, this is still a 3 Series Touring and The exterior is packed with nice additions, like the dark Hella headlights

We all know how important the right wheels are when it comes to any build, and Maksims is no exception, so picking the perfect wheels for his E46 was very high up on his list of priorities, and his choice is absolutely spectacular. “I got the idea while searching one of the forums – I wanted my wheels to be very special, and they really are,” he smiles, and he’s not lying. You might recognise them as two-piece Style 108 18” splits from the E85 Z4, but here they have been custom-built and now measure 11.25”-wide at the front and 12” across at the rear, and boast massive flat lips. That impressive width means they fill out this E46’s arches to perfection and combined with the adjustable arms that Maksims has fitted, he’s got those arches skimming over the sidewalls and touching down on the rims when he airs out – perfection. Unsurprisingly, Maksims is rather smitten with his one-off wheels: “They’re definitely my favourite modification on the car – wheels are responsible for 70% of the look on any project,” he reasons. Even on a build like this, with so much going on in the visual department, the wheels are still responsible for so much in terms of the overall look of the build, and they help to make this E46 what it is.
56 TOTAL BMW E46 330d TOURING “It’s all about small details and tweaks that make the big picture for me,” says Maksims about his choice of exterior styling mods, and they all come together effortlessly to make a big impact that ensures this E46 gets noticed wherever it goes. Maksims has taken a sensible diesel Touring and turned it into a full-on build E46 330d TOURING 58 TOTAL BMW Remember when we said this Touring retains almost all of its original practicality? Well, that’s because if you open the tailgate, you’ll be greeted by the boot build, which means Maksims won’t be stuffing any sofas into his E46 anytime soon, but we doubt he’s bothered. He’s running a single tank and twin compressor setup, and then there’s a funky bottle-green fire extinguisher, plus the Alphard audio installation while the finishing touch is the multi-coloured LED lighting for that extra bit of flair. Finally, we come to the M57 diesel lump under the bonnet, and Maksims hasn’t forgotten about it, not by a long shot. “The engine was in good condition, but I decided to fully rebuild it to make sure it can handle the increased power. I added a larger intercooler, a straight-through exhaust, and a chip and the turbo is now pushing 1.9 bar of boost instead of 1.5,” he grins. With those mods, Maksims reckons his 330d is making around 300hp and 480lb ft of torque, and that’s definitely plenty to be getting on with, and it makes this modded E46 the complete package. Maksims has been working on his 3 Series for five years now, and he’s built himself a seriously tasty Touring. It’s packed full of individual touches and plenty of flair, but it all works together perfectly and combines to create an E46 that really delivers on all fronts. We love the way it looks, the way it sits, we love the wheels, and we love what he’s done with the interior, too, and this is a project that’s been assembled and executed with real vision. Even so, Maksims is far from finished because this is very much a rolling project. “I will be getting custom front arches, Brembo brakes, and I will be wrapping it another colour,” he grins, and why are we not surprised? For Maksims, modifying is a way of life, his passion, his profession, and this E46 Touring is the culmination and expression of all that, and it effortlessly drives the point home that modded estates are just cool THANKS Thanks to Riga Customs and all my friends all around the world

60 TOTAL BMW TURBO E36
prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 61 Modifying cars rarely goes to plan, and there will be plenty of times you’ll want to throw in the towel, but you should always persevere because the results are well worth the hardship, as this awesome E36 goes to show. IMPOSSIBLE NOTHING Words: Elizabeth de Latour Photos: Kristoffer Kling
62 TOTAL BMW TURBO E36 T he course of modding never did run smooth. That’s not quite what Shakespeare said, he was talking about love, but the sentiment also applies to cars. Let’s be real: they’re not always especially reliable at the best of times, and while people outside of BMW circles might equate the Bavarian brand with perceived German sturdiness, we know that’s honestly not the case. And when you throw some mods into the mix, the chances of things going south at almost every stage increase exponentially. But it’s all worth it. Okay, that does sound like a coping mechanism, but it’s true because even when it all seems to be going wrong, when it finally goes right, and you take a step back and look at what you’ve built, that sense of satisfaction is immeasurable. Just ask Andreas Lindstrand (@widebodye36), owner of this stunning E36. The very fact that it looks so good indicates that a lot of work has gone into it, and if a lot of work has gone into a build, then you know not all of it will have simply been casually adding mods and then Andreas dusting his hands off and calling it a day. From things breaking to Covid restrictions and cancelled events, Andreas and his E36 have definitely been through the wringer, but he’s come out of it with an awesome build and a smile on his face, so it’s clear he’s got no regrets. Andreas has owned his E36 for quite a while now, and it’s been through a few different iterations over the years, though each guise has always worn some seriously nice wheels, been dropped low on coilovers, and has been finished in Calypso red. “This is the same colour as when I bought it, and that was one of the reasons I chose this car,” says Andreas. “It has been repainted a few times. We’ve experimented with different bases and effects in the clear coat, but it’s always been Calypso red,” he says with a smile, and the current flake-rich finish is simply gorgeous and takes this colour to the next level. The Garrett GT3582R turbo strapped to the side of the M50 gives this E36 some serious performance
SEPTEMBER 2023 63 the turbocharged M50 is pushing out a very healthy 400hp and 332lb ft of torque Of course, the colour is only part of what makes this E36 so striking. Those wide arches give the car so much presence and add a huge helping of muscle to the third-gen 3 Series body, and those arches have evolved during Andreas’ time with the car. When he bought the E36, it had been slammed on rockhard suspension and wide rear wheels, but this left its mark on the rear arches – it rubbed all the time, and on the way to a show in Germany, it knackered its arches, and Andreas scrapped them completely. This, naturally, gave him the perfect excuse to roll it into his workshop and get busy with an angle-grinder, giving the E36 its first wide-arch incarnation. This meant he could also get some wider wheels onto the car, and with his first custom Calypso respray, he took the car to the 2017 Elmia show. At this point, E36 life was going well for Andreas, but sadly, later that same year, on the way to Mantorp for another show, the rear arches got badly damaged once more. This was the final straw for Andreas, and he decided to take a step back from the build: “I just thought I’d give it a rest and put the car away. The spark of life was gone,” he says, sadly. But, rather than wallowing in selfpity, he focused on getting his motorbike license and spent his summers riding while he waited for the BMW craving to return.
64 TOTAL BMW TURBO E36 After looking at the E36 sitting in the garage for a long time and not finding the motivation to do anything more than a few repairs, the day finally came when Andreas decided it was time to start again, and this time he wasn’t playing around. First things first: he needed a better build base, so switched garages to one closer to work, which made it much easier to get started on this new phase of the build. And then it was time to get his teeth into what would transform this from a 318i show car into something far more serious. “I’d been thinking about building a turbocharged M50 for a while, so I went down and ripped the engine out,” grins Andreas and we weren’t kidding when we said he wasn’t playing around. Under the bonnet of this E36, you will find an M50B25, and the block, head and turbo were all parts Andreas had collected over the years. He already had a good starting point, and it was a case of cherry-picking the necessary supporting mods and putting it all together. The M50 is stock aside from being treated to a refurbished bottom end and a renovated non-Vanos head, and Andreas has mounted a Garrett GT3582R on the straight-six, along with a Turbosmart HyperGate45 wastegate. There’s a front-mount intercooler with aluminium pipes, and Andreas is running an intake manifold designed for the M20, as it’s shorter and has the correct angle for the pipework to connect up to it, while a Nuke fuel rail feeds the engine with E85. The transmission, meanwhile, is a six-speed manual gearbox from a 530d, with a Sachs 765 pressure plate, a four-puck sintered clutch and a 3.15 diff, and this E36 needs that beefy drivetrain as the turbocharged M50 is pushing out a very healthy 400hp and 332lb ft of torque. Andreas had his sights set on the 2020 Custom Motor Show at Elmia, and while the E36 now had an engine that would dazzle the crowds, the bodywork was not quite so show-ready. Having got a taste for the wide-arch life, the only option was to go even wider with his new setup, and after some discussions with a sheet metal worker, a plan was made. The E36 now wears custom metal Nuke fuel rail feeds the engine with E85 MOMO steering wheel and Speeding shifter
Sports exhaust sounds fantastic prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 65 GTR-style arches that not only look fantastic, but have been masterfully matched to the front and rear bumpers so that they flow with the bodywork, and the end result is just awesome. And when it came to the E36’s latest coat of Calypso paint, Andreas had a batch blended up with what he describes as a custom gold crystal effect; “I call it Calypso Royal,” he grins, and we can see why. It’s still got that unmistakable Calypso hue, but when the light hits it all that gold flake bursts into life, and it’s just magnificent. Unfortunately, it was at about this time that Covid struck, and news broke that the 2020 Elmia show was cancelled; “I lost interest all over again,” laments Andreas. “I was so annoyed that I threw a wrench across the garage floor. You kind of collapse when you’ve had big goals to work towards and worked until 1:30 in the morning because it was worth it…,” he sighs. But this time, he didn’t step away from the E36, and, instead, he continued to refine the build to take it to the next level, and it’s packed full of awesome mods throughout. There’s plenty more to enjoy on the outside than just the paint and those arches. You’ve got the adjustable GT-style splitter up front, the aggressive rear diffuser, and that high-rise LTW wing, and then you’ve got those little individual touches like the kidneys being bonded to the front panel for the perfect fit. It all combines to make this one of the best-looking E36s we’ve seen. Naturally, Andreas’ combo of wheels and suspension is absolutely killer, and it really enhances this E36’s awesome aesthetics. It’s a set of KW V2 coilovers that is responsible for that delicious drop, bringing those fat arches down low over the stretched sidewalls of the tyres, and beyond that, Andreas has also added welded chassis reinforcements and Delrin bushes to further enhance the handling. Andreas and his E36 have definitely been through the wringer, but he’s come out of it with an awesome build and a smile on his face, so it’s clear he’s got no regrets
66 TOTAL BMW TURBO E36 The wheels, meanwhile, are 19” Z-Performance ZP.08s finished in matt gunmetal, and they suit the E36 so well and fill those arches to perfection. And if you peer behind the widely-spaced spokes, you’ll spot the massive eight-pot calipers of the KSport BBK that Andreas has fitted up front. With a build of this calibre, it’s only natural that the interior is as impressive as the exterior, and Andreas has given it a hardcore flavour befitting a car with a street GTR look. The front seats have been replaced with Recaro SPGs, and there’s an Alcantara MOMO steering wheel plus a Speeding shifter, while the rear is occupied by a half roll-cage. It all looks great, really suits the whole build, and gives this E36 a seriously special interior. Andreas hasn’t had the easiest of times with his E36 over the years, and at times it must have felt like everything was against him, but even when the repairs and setbacks got him down, he didn’t give up. He just took a step back to gather himself and wait for the right moment to get stuck into his build once more. And it was worth all that effort because he’s put together one epic E36. We know so many of you are E36 fans, and we definitely feel like it’s a 3 Series that definitely deserves a lot more love, and this build really shows the third-gen Three at its best. We love the way it looks, we love Andreas’ take on that classic Calypso colour, and we especially love that there’s a boosted M50 under the bonnet, it makes this E36 the complete package. And as far as this build is concerned, Andreas is finished, well, sort of… “You’re never really finished,” he laughs, and we understand that all too well. And while he’s got more planned for his E36, what he’s really looking forward to is enjoying it because while there may have been plenty of problems on his modded BMW journey, the destination has been oh-so worth it, and this Calypso beauty is his own little personal slice of paradise Turbo E36 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION: 2.5-litre straight-six M50B25, Garrett GT3582R turbo, M20 intake manifold, Turbosmart HyperGate45 wastegate, aluminium boost pipes, Nuke fuel rail, Nuke catch can. 530d six-speed manual gearbox, Sachs 765 pressure plate, four-puck sintered clutch, 3.15 differential POWER AND TORQUE: 400hp and 332lb ft CHASSIS: 19” Z-Performance ZP.08 wheels in matt gunmetal with 215/35 (front and rear) tyres, KW V2 coilovers, welded chassis reinforcements, Delrin bushes, KSport BBK with eight-piston calipers and 356mm discs (front), E46 330i brakes (rear), black mirrors EXTERIOR: Full respray in custom Calypso red with gold crystal effect, custom metal wide-body, E36 M3 GT-style adjustable front lip, black grilles bonded to front panel, E36 M3 LTW-style rear spoiler, rear diffuser INTERIOR: Recaro SPG seats, MOMO Mod.08 steering wheel, Speeding shifter, rear half-cage THANKS Thanks to my sponsors: Schmiedmann, Magass Design, Speeding, and Lackman, and many thanks to all the people involved in the build, day and night, tired and alert. TOURING RACER LEARNING CURVES
A few issues ago (June), we visited the Qvick Motors workshop in Belgium to see its incredible Group 5 320 replicas, but those aren’t the only special BMWs you’ll find there. A more personal project, a real father-andson experience, we take a look at one of the coolest Tourings we’ve ever come across. Words and photos: Robb Pritchard
70 TOTAL BMW TOURING RACER T his stunning E30 Touring was never intended to be as cool as this. Initially, it was just going to be a rough drift car cobbled together from BMW bits found in the parts bin. It didn’t turn out like that, though. And, like most of the BMWs handled by Qvick Motors, it’s pretty special. Kenzi Qvick’s father, Eric, has been racing and building BMWs ever since he accidentally stumbled across the 1970 Spa 24 Hours while walking through the local woods. Kenzi himself has been around motorsport since he was old enough to clean his father’s racing wheels, which was not all that long after learning to walk. He began developing his racing craft a few years ago in the Belgian Clio Cup, but as good for honing racing skills as the little Renaults are, he wanted a car closer to what his father had. A BMW. While still at college, he found a 1987 325i Touring with 200,000km on it that was in the process of being parted out. The engine and interior weren’t needed, so the rolling shell was just what they were looking for. “It was just going to be a very quick and simple build,” Kenzi explains. “All we wanted was to put together a cheap car just to have some fun in. I wanted to do some drifting, and maybe some circuit races and my dad was interested in doing some rallying.” For this, they bought another set of shocks and springs so they could raise the ride height, as, obviously, rally stages are much rougher than circuit racing. But, bit by bit, it evolved into something much better. One of the main reasons for that was that instead of rummaging around in the parts bin for discarded, but still salvageable, things like Centrallymounted race fuel filler
OMP steering wheel and golf ball Motorsport gear knob The roll-cage has been adapted to fit the E30 Touring body prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 71 he was supposed to, Kenzi went sneaking around the performance parts storeroom… a place that holds many treasures when your father owns an internationally renowned BMW racing workshop. The first of the many items Kenzi pestered his dad for was an aluminium engine head from an E46 2.5, which he bored out himself. This is usually an intricate and highly skilled job, especially for an inexperienced teenager, but Kenzi’s Technics tutor at college had run his own cylinder-head repair shop before becoming a teacher, plus his dad had all the right tools at the workshop. Kenzi practised on a broken one to see just how much metal he could take out of the channels, then did the same on the one destined for the Touring. Kenzi was on a strict budget for this build, at least to start with, because, as anyone involved in putting a competition-spec BMW together knows, the cost for performance parts can quickly mount up. The 2.5-litre M54 block, pistons and gearbox are original. Plenty of companies make custom cage kits for the E30 M3, and to keep the cost down, Kenzi bought a basic one but then added a lot of extra bracing to make it safer and stiffer. The front doors of a Touring are shorter than the saloon, and although, to the eye, the body might look longer, the wheelbase of the Touring is exactly the same. But while the cage fits into the shell, the B-pillar is positioned a few inches further forward than the M3 which necessitated a creative solution to get the cage to fit. “The first time, I had to ask dad to do it as what I had done looked so awful, but by the end, what I was doing looked great,” smiles Kenzi triumphantly. The M3-style widened body panels are all fibreglass. To fit them the original metal from the wings Kenzi modelled the cylinder head on that from an E46 WTCC racer. The intake has six butterflies from an E36 M3, and it’s rated at a healthy 270hp, along with 151lb ft of torque
72 TOTAL BMW TOURING RACER had to be cut out and the new panels bonded on. Kenzi says the hardest part was cutting the right lines in the fibreglass for the rear doors, which, seeing as they were designed for a three-door, didn’t fit too well. “Dad showed me how to do it, but it was very hard to get it exactly right, and I ended up using quite a lot of filler.” Eric knew how much practical experience his son would be learning on this build, so generally showed Kenzi what to do and then just let him get on with it. Practice makes perfect, after all. The more Kenzi worked on the car, the more cool parts he blagged from his dad’s storeroom, and the more the build developed into something a bit more ambitious. “I had to have the air jacks and competitionspec suspension. It took a long time for him to let me have them, but eventually, he did,” Kenzi grins. One day, they both decided that seeing as the build was getting serious, they should prepare it for some serious events… and so the plan was changed from a rough drift car to a proper endurance racer. Kenzi went all-in and sold his Clio Cup car to cover the growing costs. And the serious work began. The subframes are original, but Kenzi added mounts for uniballs. At the front, Kenzi fabricated custom mounts, so he could install shock absorbers and hubs from an E36, as that would give him a much wider choice when sourcing competition parts. Damping is now provided by four-way adjustable D2 racing E36 shocks. At the rear, all the suspension is uniball joints, again like a Group A E30. Stopping power is provided by AP Racing brake calipers on 330mm floating discs, the same as the Group A endurance cars ran. The rear axle, meanwhile, has a 188mm diff with 75% locking. Kenzi modelled the cylinder head on that from an E46 WTCC racer. The intake has six butterflies from an M3 E36, and it’s rated at a healthy 270hp, along with 151lb ft of torque. The gearbox is a six-speed H-pattern Samsonas dog-ring transmission, and the exhaust is from an E46 WTCC car that was left over from when his father used to race one. One of Kenzi’s favourite parts on the car is the blipper. “Dad had one on the E90 WTCC car he used to race. When using a E30 Touring Racer ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION: 2.5-litre straight-six M54B25, uprated cams, valve guides, valve springs, larger intake and exhaust ports, S50B30 throttle bodies, PP54 exhaust manifold, fibreglass airbox, KMS standalone ECU. ZF Type C E36 M3 gearbox adapted by Samsonas to a dog-ring gearbox with straight-cut teeth, Sachs racing clutch, four-plate 75% locking LSD CHASSIS: 9x17” BBS wheels, D2 four-way adjustable coilovers, uprated anti-roll bars, AP Racing endurance brakes with 330mm discs EXTERIOR: Alpine white with Kawasaki green, fibreglass M3-style body kit, homemade front splitter, Opel Astra Silhouette race car rear wing INTERIOR: Stripped out, OMP steering wheel, custom dashboard, golf ball gear knob, Sparco fire extinguisher system, Custom Cages roll-cage This stunning E30 Touring was never intended to be as cool as this. Initially, it was just going to be a rough drift car cobbled together from BMW bits found in the parts bin. It didn’t turn out like that, though
prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 73 Kenzi has plenty more planned for the Touring, including lots more racing gearbox with dog rings, you don’t need to use the clutch, but you need to match the revs. It was a little hard for a non-professional driver like me to toe and heel on downshifts, though. We tried to program it into our ECU, but we couldn’t get it to work, so we installed our own version. Dad took a starter motor and turned it upside down so it pulls on the throttle body to give a 30% throttle. On the BMW Motorsport cars, they have a load shifter on the gear stick, but we never found out how they did that.” Kenzi’s least favourite part of the build was installing the bespoke wiring loom, “I only worked on the car in my spare time, so after college and at the weekends, but the loom took over three months to do!” he winces, but it was all worth it. Building such a car together was a cool father and son experience, but not nearly as much as actually racing it. The car was ready for its first event at the end of 2016, which was a 10-hour night endurance event at Zolder. The start was at 7pm, and the chequered flag was at 5am, and held in the depths of November, it was a proper night race. Fortunately, the BMW was fitted with xenon headlights. “They were just lying there,” Kenzi shrugs innocently. First time together, first time at a night race and in an untested car, they didn’t have the highest expectations, but it went much better than they’d expected as Kenzi was vying for the class lead with
74 TOTAL BMW TOURING RACER more experienced drivers in supposedly much more capable cars, such as E36 M3s. That was until a slightly overambitious overtaking move didn’t pay off and sent him careening over the massive sausage curbs. With the front wheels disagreeing on which way to point, he sadly assumed it was race-ending damage to the steering. The car was taken back to the pits on the back of a recovery truck, and that might have been the end of the race… for other teams. Not for Eric though. As the car is lowered, there is an extender bracket on the toe link. It wasn’t strong enough to take the sausage curb, but all they had to do was take it off and attach the link to the original place. Eric had it fixed and back on track in 15 minutes… although for the rest of the race, the handling was quite a bit out of kilter. After college, Kenzi began working full time in the Qvick Motors workshop, and with many customer cars to look after at races, he had no free weekends to race himself, so the next time the Touring was taken out was a year later at the same race. Then came COVID, so no racing. But with the recovery, suddenly there was a lot of extra work as everyone wanted to get their race cars back on track after an extended layoff. Plus, of course, the new project of building a small fleet of very accurate replicas of the Group 5 E9 320s (Total BMW June 2023), which took up all the pair’s time. But with things now somewhat settled down and some free time coming up in the foreseeable future, Kenzi has some very cool plans for the car. They are currently learning the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit and are on the way to earning three finishes in the short RCN races to get the licence they need to enter the full endurance series. Now that will be a proper father and son experience! Maybe one day we’ll see this car at the Nürburgring. It has a history of being much more than it was intended for, so this is not beyond the realms of possibility The massive rear wing is from an Opel Astra race car They are currently learning the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit and are on the way to earning three finishes in the short RCN races to get the licence they need to enter the full endurance series

TECH Q&A PART THREE 76 TOTAL BMW If a vehicle’s exhaust emissions are high, most people add an injector cleaner to the tank and hope for the best, so do yours actually work, and if so, how? A: Yes, we have photographic evidence of a blocked injector before and after treatment using our fuel injection cleaner. When mixed with the fuel in the tank and the engine is running, the agents of injector cleaner pass through the injector nozzles together with the fuel, and remove some of the deposits. In the end, the nozzles are cleared of encrusted deposits. The automotive lab APL tested the injector cleaner: one engine ran with petrol only, the other with petrol and injection cleaner. After 60 hours, the first engine collected 0.3 grams of deposits at each valve. The other engine was still clean, with only 0.03 grams of deposits. We ask the experts at LIQUI MOLY how their products can reduce exhaust emissions. Are deposits around an injector’s nozzles so much of a problem? A: A nozzle covered with encrusted deposits probably won’t deliver too little fuel into the combustion chamber, but the big problem is the spray pattern – the deposits prevent the fuel from being atomised properly. So, the fuel does not burn as efficiently and cleanly as it should, leading to greater fuel consumption, more emissions and less power. What about a diesel engine that’s too smoky and fails on emissions at the MOT test? Will a fuel cleaner help? A: It could, but an equally quick fix is Diesel Smoke Stop, which is added to the diesel fuel. This additive accelerates the combustion of the soot and reduces black plumes. It’s compatible with all conventional diesel and biodiesel fuels and engines with turbochargers but not Words: Rob Hawkins Photos: LIQUI MOLY REDUCING EMISSIONS for engines with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). 150ml is sufficient for 50 litres of diesel fuel (a ratio of 1:333). Pour the contents of the can directly into the tank before filling up with fuel. What if an engine is burning oil because its piston rings are seized or worn? No fuel cleaner or other additive is going to fix that and reduce the emissions, is it? A: Viscoplus for Oil can help here. Worn piston rings allow more oil to pass between the piston rings and the cylinder. Fuel dilution and water condensation in the oil make the oil thinner, allowing even more oil to get into the combustion chamber and be burned. Viscoplus for Oil stops or reduces this because it stabilises the loss of viscosity of the oil and improves the seal between the piston and cylinder.
77 Does that mean an engine that’s burning oil because it’s passing by the piston rings can be fixed and doesn’t need a rebuild? A: No, but the problem of oil consumption may be caused by oil dilution, so Viscoplus for Oil can help the adverse effects of oil becoming thinner and thinner. Dirty and/or seized piston rings are another reason, so an additive like Engine Flush Plus will help clean them and avoid the need for a strip down of the engine. Remember that additives are useful chemical tools, but like all tools, they cannot magically fix broken parts. What is your JetClean Tronic II used for? A: It’s a piece of equipment (device) used on petrol and diesel engines to remove carbon deposits inside the fuel and air intake areas. How does it work? A: JetClean Tronic II is powered by the vehicle’s 12-volt battery and connected to the fuel system by several available connectors. Additionally, we connect the device to the air intake to reduce deposits and their build-up in the manifold, and also here different adapters are available. Using LIQUI MOLY’s Pro-Line JetClean injection cleaner and Pro-Line JetClean intake system cleaner, the engine is run, and these products are fed into it. Sounds expensive. Surely adding injector cleaner to the fuel tank is just as effective? A: No, the JetClean Tronic II is the most effective way to clean injectors as the detergents are fed directly to the engine and are not diluted by gasoline. Is JetClean Tronic II only suitable for direct injection engines? A: No, also manifold-injected engines and their components can be cleaned. I don’t want to buy a JetClean Tronic II, so are there any garages that use it? A: JetClean Tronic II is a LIQUI MOLY service that more and more workshops are using. The best way to find a service near you is to go directly to the LIQUI MOLY website. CONTACT LIQUI MOLY www.liqui-moly.com
78 TOTAL BMW MARKET WATCH F86 X6 M Whether you consider the X6 M a proper M car or not, there’s no denying its talents, and it’s now pretty affordable. Words: Guy Baker A touch over £30,000 now buys one of BMW’s most controversial and complicated models – the F86 X6 M. Love it or hate it, the ultimate rich man’s toy performs like an M Coupé yet seats five in luxurious comfort. Not quite as practical as its X5 M cousin, the entry price to this exclusive club has fallen from close to £100,000 a few years ago to just a third of that now. And the majority of cars are mint, low-mileage two- or three-owner examples with full BMW service histories – some even possess an extended BMW warranty too. And if you do decide to take the plunge, then you’d be buying one of the quickest performance SUVs ever made, with a twin-turbocharged 4.4- litre V8 powerplant producing 575hp at 6000rpm and 553lb ft of torque from just 2200rpm. Sold between 2015 and 2019, the F86’s power is directed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic M Steptronic gearbox and BMW’s tried-and-tested M-enhanced xDrive technology. So despite tipping the scales at around 2353kg, the X6 M can still easily breach the factory 155mph speed limiter when derestricted, and acceleration is close to brutal in most gears, with the F86 possessing a dynamic capability that almost defies logic. BMW’s eight-speed M Steptronic transmission works quickly and efficiently, but you can take total control of the gear changes, if you want, with the steering-wheel paddles – which allow you to take things right up to the rev-limiter. The brakes, too, do an effective job, even if you have to use them hard several times. Try this, and the X6 M does shimmy around a bit, but the car’s reassuring grip and balance, plus a commanding driving position, enable you to power on and steer through bends with extreme confidence. Just watch your licence on UK roads, though… The X6 M is well appointed, with a crystal clear head-up display and Bluetooth connectivity, plus leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control. There’s enough headroom for three adults in the back – despite that sloping roof line – and the boot is easily big enough for five people’s luggage, too. Styling-wise, all cars come with LED headlights, black kidney grilles, a carbon fibre gear selector, a Sport steering wheel, carbon fibre mirrors and black side vents – and most first owners seem to have selected quite a few optional extras. The F86 X6 M was replaced by the current G06 model in 2020, and since then, values have fallen quite sharply. The majority of cars are now advertised privately, but this is a riskier route to X6 M ownership, and prices aren’t much lower – so we’d recommend you buy from a BMW specialist instead – but very few F86s seem to appear at BMW dealers. And with prices starting at around £30,000, now is arguably the ideal time to buy an F86, before any expensive longer-term maintenance issues start to need addressing.
prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 79 Values are most affected by mileage rather than age. The majority of UK cars have had just two or three owners, possess a full BMW service history, and have covered less than 45k miles. But bear in mind that F86 values are declining gently, and you’ll be doing well if you return better than 20mpg in real-world driving. This good-looking 2016 Black Sapphire Metallic example at Jack Henry Cars in Kent (www. jackhenrygroup.co.uk) is typical of what you could buy. Stickered at £35,995, this car has covered an average 48,300 miles and comes with a fully documented BMW service history and an expansive spec that includes style 612M 21” doublespoke alloys and extended black Merino leather upholstery. It also boasts full-colour Head-Up Display, BMW’s Professional Multimedia sat nav with a 10.2” widescreen display, Apple CarPlay preparation, the Cold Weather Package, a glass sunroof, Reversing Assist Camera and a heated steering wheel. For a few grand more, you could buy a newer example like this striking blue 2018 X6 M we spotted at iCar World Ltd in Essex (www.icarworld. co.uk). With a full service history and a spec that’s a close match for the previous car, this particular X6 M has covered a slightly aboveaverage 55,000 miles and is priced at £39,999. Although it’s sold with between a three-12-month warranty, it has had four owners, so you could try to negotiate a decent discount. But if it’s value you’re after, then a higher-mileage car is the way to go, as long as it packs a full service history and comes with some kind of warranty – like this Black 16-plater for sale at Dynamic Cars (www.dynamiccars. uk) in Bedfordshire. Advertised for £32,450, it’s covered 77,000 miles and has a very similar spec, with the Cold Weather Package and extended Silverstone Merino leather. With such a sophisticated bit of kit, it’s essential that the engine and mechanicals have been serviced on the button for the entirety of the car’s life, at a BMW dealer or an experienced specialist. And if you can find an X6 M with an extendable BMW warranty, so much the better. Watch out for any signs whatsoever of oil or water leaks, and the auxiliary coolant pump that feeds cooling water to the turbos can fail, so always check it’s working properly. Maintaining the latest software updates to the iDrive system and transmission is essential, too, and you can check the VIN number with a BMW dealer to ensure that all recall work has been carried out. First of all, it's application only, with no public tickets or parking, which keeps the event much smaller and more intimate. As it's application only, the organisers, the trio of Tony Forbes-Marsden, Dave Smith and Steve Head – lifelong BMW fans and show regulars – and the team can keep the quality high, and they can also make sure the intimate Kent venue never feels overcrowded. And after testing the water last year and revising the layout slightly for 2023, Bespoke saw over 100 cars parked up on an exceedingly sunny Sunday in June. Bespoke welcomes all makes, models and ages of cars, but it is, of course, the BMWs that we're interested in, and the selection at the show was rather tasty. We loved Kuldeep Virdy's gorgeous Calypso E30 325i Cab, and Daryll Perry's wide-body E30 Cab was looking equally stunning. We also spotted Oliver Ross's S50- swapped E36 Touring, a gorgeous red E21 on BBS splits, while Yves Decan drove all the way from Belgium in his Bespoke Show 2023 After the success of its inaugural event last year, it was a given that Bespoke would return for 2023, and this year's show was even better on every level.

PlusFourFour was started to build a brand, which the team has succeeded with, attending shows across the UK and Europe, making their own clothing and merchandise range, and building a great following. But one of the PlusFourFour team's main goals was to put on a new show in the southwest, and that's exactly what they did in 2021. Two years on from that, The Show once again returned to Wiltshire, with over 750 selected show cars attending this year's event. The M62 was taken apart OUR CARS 86 TOTAL BMW p88 Ian’s G26 i4 M50 p86 Mani’s E38 735i In the last update, I announced that my local BMW specialist (Auto Technik, Lutterworth) identified the source of the engine oil leak, with it being the upper and lower timing case covers. Given that it takes an enormous amount of labour to change the lower timing case cover, I decided that it was probably prudent to replace a few other bits, given that I do not want to have open heart surgery on this engine again (and all the labour that goes with it). As is widely reported, the timing chain guides are a massive weak point on the M62/TU engine, so I decided to get them replaced too. Oh, and also the timing chain itself. And the tensioner. And while they had easy access to them, all of the belts too. There were also lots of nuts, bolts, gaskets and seals that needed replacing as part of this job, so add that to the list too. Put it this way; the parts list ran into three A4 pages! For me, this is all about having a daily car that is reliable and can really be used as a daily, hence all this preventative maintenance and the costs that go with it too. Once the specialist had received p90 Elizabeth’s F22 M235i p92 Total BMW’s E36 323i Sport Convertible Mani’s E38 735i
New sun visor brackets Hydraulic ram now secured prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 87 all of the parts from BMW, I dropped the car off with a sense of trepidation but also a little relief that probably, the biggest mechanical job that I had lined up to do on this car was being done. I was also very interested to see the condition of the existing timing chain guides after 119,000 miles. The day after dropping the car off, I received a few photos from the specialist of the engine where all of the existing timing chain guides can be seen. And as you can see, they are actually in remarkable shape given the age and mileage. There are no broken bits, and everything appeared to have been holding up well. The only thing being reported was the usual varnish on some of the items. In any case, I was very happy with what I saw. The next day, I got a call to say that the new guides, chain and tensioner had all been fitted, so I popped down to take a look. While it was really easy to spot the new guides and chain, which were all nice and shiny, looking at the engine right in front of me in its open-heart surgery state showed just how big this engine actually is. How the specialist remembers where everything goes afterwards is beyond me! I asked the team to check a few other bits such as the water pump and thermostat, but they looked like they had been replaced recently so did not require replacement (a pressure test was conducted on the engine after everything was put together anyway), and the expansion tank was replaced recently too. It was also very nice to see a shiny oil pan, which was cleaned thoroughly by the specialist. So, with my visit over, I got a call a few days later that, after a thorough test drive, the car was ready for collection. With the painful part of paying the bill done, it was fantastic to hear the engine roar to life and on my way back home on the M1, the car pulled very strongly. I am not sure if this is the placebo effect, but the acceleration and general smoothness of the engine were fantastic. With that done, I reflected that it was really good to have two major items (and two major jobs) on the car completed. That is firstly the gearbox service and secondly, the timing chain guide ‘job’, although, with that latter job, it was more of a full-on assault carried out by military operation. My thanks to the entire team at Auto Technik and, in particular, Colin and Jodie. Not to be outdone by the specialist, I decided to take on an equally mammoth task of my own once I got the car back. And that was to replace the sun visor brackets. I noticed that the passenger bracket was broken and that the previous owner tried to repair it was some superglue, which looked very unsightly. So, after a look on RealOEM, I tracked down the part number and was very happy to see that these are still available to order in the colour I needed (Sand beige). I popped down to my local BMW dealer and, a few days later, got the call to say they were ready for collection. 10 minutes later, I replaced both sides. Another job done and another big green tick on my to-do list. The next item I turned my attention to was the boot. The dealer I purchased the car from had the hydraulic boot lid serviced and all hydraulic lines replaced, and while it was working fine, there have been a few occasions where the left strut’s circlip would work its way loose. This meant that when the boot was closing by itself, the strut would come loose, and the boot would slam shut. Thinking that it’s probably best to avoid my head or hands being cut off, I ordered several circlips from BMW at the huge unit price of around 60p. After greasing all of the joints, I then reattached the strut and circlip, and since then, it has been fine. I was looking at getting the left strut replaced, but as the BMW dealer advised me, the left strut is not actually a strut. It is a hydraulic ram (part of the hydraulic tail lift system), and not only is it over £450 to buy the ram, it’s no longer available from BMW, which is a shame. The system/ram works fine for now, but I will certainly be on the lookout for a replacement one. Doing this exercise, however, has meant that I have added some more items to the ever-expanding to-do list. That is to replace the right-hand boot strut (which is a strut) and might as well replace both of the bonnet struts too. I will leave this update here for now. In the next update, we carry out more work on missing clips/items and install the weatherstrip seals to get this car back to factory fresh condition. Fresh chain guides
88 TOTAL BMW It’s all too easy to be drawn into the ‘futuristic’ aspect of electric cars. It is just another fuel, and if we embrace the concept that most of the world has grown up with only two pedals anyhow, there is very little left to make a fuss about. The EV accelerates with more vigour and more smoothness than any automatic car at the same price point, with only its energy recuperation characteristics being worthy of the description ‘learning-curve’. The rest of the technology is here-and-now marketwide stuff, and BMW has its own take and style upon it, with mixed results. Like many makes, BMW embraces the idea of ‘Driver Profiles’ for seat position, climate preference, radio station etc. with its ‘BMW ID’. Linking to the BMW app – more worthwhile with the EV models for monitoring battery and charge remotely – it requires initial setup at the dealership. This involves downloading the BMW app with its own security steps first, linking the phone to the car via Bluetooth, entering the car’s VIN into the phone’s app, then scanning a QR code off the car’s main fascia display screen, confirming the link and then Ian’s G26 i4 M50 (twice) tapping in a four-digit code on the car’s display screen when prompted by the app, then consultation with several representatives of the United Nations and Bono from U2 I think, but it was getting late by then. You can link all this to the key – hallelujah! – like I could in my Range Rover 15 years ago. But, should you then have the audacity to approach the car with the second key, it requires the four-digit code again and several seconds to pull up your settings. After all that faffing, why not make the four-digit code an additional security measure preventing unauthorized drivers even with a key? The original (E23) 7 Series did exactly that, over 40 years ago. Another aspect where the i4 M50 seems to get nine-tenths of the way through a good idea is the tailgate. Power operation can be set to halt at less than full height to prevent it from hitting the garage roof. This is done by selecting one of five heights on the main screen. Step 3 halts well short of the roof, perfectly placed to bang my head while loading, while on the next step up it would hit the roof first. In other makes, you position the tailgate manually to the exact desired position and hold the button to memorise it. Much better. Some foibles are merely a corollary of the i4 M50 being an electrified version of an existing model. Full recuperation braking is activated by flicking the gear lever sideways into ‘B’ – where ‘Sport’ would usually be. This gives one-pedal driving for city work. Other EVs have this on a separate button or via steering wheel paddles, while the BMW system means that after a reverse manoeuvre, you’re back in ‘D’ and have to re-select ‘B’. When reversing, the excellent rear camera is a boon, there’s an overhead plan view available, too, a ‘carwash’ view (which zooms in on the front wheel track) and a wide-angle front T-junction view,
E23 did PIN security better SEPTEMBER 2023 89 but no actual 360° surround camera views as found in other German Evs. There is one very good reason for all this nine-tenthsity; price. The i4 M50 is an expensive car, and to BMW’s credit, it feels expensive inside too, but actually most of that expense is in the EV part of the equation. It may sound ridiculous but equipment levels are limited by the remaining budget. The oft-quoted adage that a £50,000 EV has £30,000 of batteries and motors in it is not far off. So let’s turn to the batteries and the thorny issue of range, of which the i4 M50 should have 316 miles. For a start, the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) which creates the figure, is simply not fit for purpose. It is carried out in a laboratory at 23°C (considered optimal for Battery Electric Vehicles), and we know that the battery performance declines rapidly as it gets colder. Therefore, there are only a few days a year in the UK when you can even get near the test data. Moreover, the acceleration phase of the test is equal to getting from 0-60mph in longer than 20 seconds, and the average speed across the whole test is just under 29mph. Having only a single-speed transmission, an EV’s road speed is directly proportional to the energy used – there are no low revs in overdrive to be had here. So, cruising at 70mph is more than double the average speed used in the test cycle. That’s why the best number I tend to get from EVs is 80% of claimed range, driving in a manner which would marginally better the official figures in combustionengined cars. For the i4 M50, that would equate to 253 miles. An event 116 miles away offered a chance to try a real-world experiment. It consisted of a couple of miles of 30mph road, around six miles of mixed 50 and 70mph ring road, 103 miles of motorway and a short 60mph A-road into a village at the destination. The return, via exactly the same route, gave a total of 232 miles elapsed and showed 59 miles of remaining range. A theoretical total range of 291 miles, better than 90%. However, the devil is in the detail – and I do mean detail! Remember that 23° test-cycle optimum? On the day, it was 21° and 22° ambient. No air-conditioning allowed, merely venting the car, windows down for a minute or so, below 30mph through the village on the return leg. Using my old method from towing at the 60mph trailer limit, the entire outward motorway section was done at no more than 56mph following an artic. Likewise, the A-road, truck-following at just 40mph, with dual-carriageways at their 50 limit or at 56mph (truck-hugging again) on the 70mph sections. The return leg was even slower due to crawling traffic (which would have added, say, 15 minutes to a 70mph run) and motorway variable speed limits. I mainly followed a Polishregistered artic doing 51 mph tops – its rear sticker displaying that country’s 80 kph limit. The overall average speed came out at just 38.3 mph, hardly practical in itself but more interesting within EV parameters. Driving this slowly added perhaps three-quarters of an hour each way, compared to doing the speed limit, but avoided a (pricey) recharge of at least 45 minutes – charge-point queue permitting – on the way home. A 420d could do the whole thing twice on one tankful but would cost twice as much per mile in fuel compared to homecharging the i4 M50. Next, we’ll try something similar, all at 70mph.
New ARP bolts OUR CARS 90 TOTAL BMW The N55 is a superb engine – that much is undeniable. BMW did a fantastic job with it, and, despite losing a turbo, it was a worthy upgrade over its N54 predecessor. It offered improved response and a greater spread of torque thanks to its single twin-scroll turbo, as well as better fuel economy, even if it ultimately wasn’t as tunable as its twin-turbo counterpart. It sounds great, it’s smooth, delivers seriously impressive performance out of the box, still offers good modding potential, and makes the 35i models it powers a delight to drive. But lord knows it’s not without its problems… I had already been faced with the delights of the leaking valve cover gasket on my M235i, which I remedied by getting a whole new cover fitted because those can also crack over time – obviously. However, there were two far more expensive and potentially disastrous issues that the N55 is also known for that I decided I wanted to prevent from happening. I thought I had escaped the spectre of rod bearings by buying a non-M car, which I replaced on my E92 M3 as preventative maintenance. I had done my research, and while the N55 was not completely immune, it appeared that the problem was pretty much only prevalent on earlier 320hp 35i models, and as all M235is came with the revised 326hp incarnation of the N55, I was confident I was fine. The exact specifics of why the later engines were safer were a little fuzzy; some people on forums were claiming the engine shared its bearings with the OG M2 along with other apparent revisions, while others claimed that wasn’t the case. And there was me in the middle of it all, spending far too long looking at part numbers and cross-referencing countless forums and threads. But, it seemed that whatever BMW had done on the 326hp version of the engine had solved the problem, and I was happy with that. Until the guy I’d bought a bm3 licence from came to my house to drop Elizabeth’s F22 M235i @buffycarjourno off the cables to connect my phone to the car. He told me that the rod bearings on his 2016, 80k-mile M135i had gone, and he had to buy a new engine. And so, I immediately decided that I was going to get the rod bearings changed on my M235i. I admit it might sound like a knee-jerk reaction and an unnecessary one born out of panic, but I am planning to keep the M2325i for a long time. I want a G80 M3: all being well, that is what I want my next car to be, and I have to wait about six years (I reckon) for them to drop to a point where I might be able to afford one, so that means I want the M235i operating at peak performance while it’s with me because I want it to last. First things first, I needed to gather all the ingredients required for the job, so I bought a set of ARP bolts from PSDesigns, as they are stronger and reusable, unlike the stock items that are torque-to-fit stretch bolts. Then, of course, I needed the all-important bearings, and for these, I turned to ACL for its race-series rod bearings, which I got via UK distributor Engine Parts UK. Seeing as the lining on the stock bearings wears, you definitely don’t want to use factory items, so it’s absolutely worthwhile getting some upgraded bearings in your engine. ACL bearings boast a highperformance Trimetal construction and have been designed to withstand higher rpm conditions and feature a high-strength overlay plate with reduced thickness for improved fatigue properties. Hardened steel backs
MMR sump baffle prestigeandperformancecar.com SEPTEMBER 2023 91 improve the support of the bearing lining and assist with bearing retention in the housing, while increased crush improves bearing retention. The elimination of flash plating on the back of the bearings improves heat transfer through the bearings, and maximises the grip between the bearings and their housing. They also feature increased eccentricity to compensate for bore distortion at high rpm and to assist in the formation of hydrodynamic oil films. All that means that they are the ideal choice for anyone changing their rod bearings, and they are far superior to the standard BMW items. As Michael Eustace from M.E.AutoServices had done such a good job on the M3’s bearings, I asked him to do the bearings on my M235i too, and with the sump off, it made sense to tackle the second big problem that the N55 is known to suffer from. In its wisdom, BMW decided that its turbocharged ’six, which would be fitted to a number of small, sporty models, didn’t need any sort of baffling in its sump. In small, sporty cars that would be likely driven quite hard on the road and the track… Now, I’m no engineer, but that doesn’t sound like a great combo, and it isn’t. The N55 is notorious for oil starvation, which leads to engine failure, and, while it does most commonly happen on the track, it can also happen out on the road during particularly spirited driving. Naturally, as I enjoy driving the M235i in the manner in which it was intended to be driven, I was a little worried about that. You can fit the S55 sump and dual oil pump pickup, which is very effective, naturally, but also very expensive at around £2000 for the parts alone. I won’t lie, I did briefly consider it, but I decided it was just too much to spend. Luckily, there is a solution available from MMR for significantly less money. After having experienced oilstarvation-based N55 engine failure on track first-hand, the MMR team set about coming up with a fix, and the result was the MMR baffled sump. MMR discovered that the oil starvation issue is most pronounced under heavy braking, with the oil rushing to the front of the sump, leaving the pump with nothing to suck up. Its baffled sump is designed to prevent that while also helping to keep the oil where you want it during hard cornering. The MMR baffled sump has been designed to provide effective oil control, reducing surge and maintaining more constant oil pressure. It does this via seven sophisticated one-way oil control flaps and specific baffling, and MMR has tested its baffled sump over thousands of miles on road and track and has collected plenty of data proving its effectiveness. Best of all, unlike other sump baffles that need to be welded in, the MMR baffled sump is mounted in place with just four bolts and costs just over £410. For the money and peace of mind, it seemed like a no-brainer. Michael got everything fitted for me, gave the N55 some fresh oil, and I can relax knowing that (touch wood) my M235i’s engine is now safe thanks to all my preventative maintenance efforts. I’m sure some people will say I’ve gone overboard, but I’d rather spend a bit of money now rather than having to spend a lot of money on a new engine later if the worst were to happen. And, of course, next month, I get right back to spending money on the M235i with New ACL a selection of styling upgrades… bearings (below) THANKS Engine Parts UK www.enginepartsuk.net MMR www.mmrperformance.co.uk PSDesigns Psdesignsglobal.com M.E.AutoServices Facebook.com/M.E.Autoservices
OUR CARS 92 TOTAL BMW With the E36 nice and clean and sitting on fresh rubber, it was time to tackle a couple of things on the to-do list. Honestly, there weren’t actually that many items on the estimate that BMSport (www.bmsport.com, 0208 3049797) sent over for us, but one of them made for a rather sizeable bill. Cast your mind back to our March issue, and you will recall this was when the E36 paid its first visit (of many) to BMSport for a once-over. Overall, it wasn’t too shabby, but there was one rather shocking discovery that needed sorting urgently. It turned out that one of the rear brakes had been repaired at some point, and the repair had been well and truly bodged, as the pipe now travelled both above the exhaust and under the propshaft, which is a shortcut to losing your brakes. The solution was going to be to get rid of this pipe bodge, drop the fuel tank, and route the brake pipe properly and safely. Which is exactly what I dropped the E36 off for. The BMSport guys cracked on with the job, which was extremely involved, taking no fewer than six hours of work to drop the fuel tank, and then replace the errant brake line to make sure it was routed correctly. But brakes are pretty important, and you definitely want to make sure that everything involving them is done correctly, so it was time and money well spent. It’s scary that a repair that’s been so badly carried out previously can go unnoticed, so it’s a good job we took it for that once over with BMSport, and they spotted it immediately. While the 323i was in the garage, we also asked the team to carry out an oil service, as the service indicator was glaring at us in a very angry fashion every time we started the car, and it turned out that it was requesting some nice fresh oil. With that taken care of, the most important items on the to-do list had been sorted, and the E36 was ready to be enjoyed. Well, almost, because when we were collecting the car, the guys remarked that the 323i could do with an alignment, so this was marked down for another date. Total BMW’s E36 323i Sport Convertible @totalbmwmag And along with that, we also spotted a couple of bits on the 3 Series that we could take care of ourselves, so we’ll be doing those next time.
