Speaking at the 2024 National Good Governance Symposium yesterday, he said he is committed to fighting corruption and wants to ensure that such practices do not occur in the unity government administration. “Believe me, I do not compromise. Tan Sri Azam Baki (Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission chief commissioner) knows my stance very well. Whether the party supports me or not, that’s another question. It does not influence my decision.” Anwar said enforcement agencies should take strict action against those involved in graft, including prominent figures if there is solid data, facts and reasons. “If there is (evidence), I don’t care about their positions or influence because stern action must be taken, and we have already initiated it,” he said while congratulating the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for its courage. Anwar said stern action taken against prominent figures and the cancellation of direct negotiation contracts have displeased certain parties, but such measures are necessary for the country. “There continues to be leakages in large direct negotiation contracts involving billions of ringgit and I’m not exaggerating.” He urged all parties not to politicise enforcement actions against those involved in corruption, especially prominent figures. “How long are we going to let it be like this? Why are issues like this politicised? Your loyalty to anyone or your interest in a political party is your problem. “We cannot talk about values, religion and race while defending betrayal of the nation, religion, and country,” Anwar said. – Bernama ‘My focus on nation, not plot’ SEPANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has decided not to entertain questions on an alleged plot to topple the government. “I want to focus on leading the country. Anwar was speaking after launching the 2024 National Good Governance Symposium yesterday. Prior to this, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Umno president, had said the SDs were no longer valid for any backdoor change of government with the introduction of the anti-hopping law in 2022. TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 3 GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow yesterday urged all parties to stop arguing about the water disruption issue in the state and instead focus on the repair works that will be carried out, as it is for the long-term benefit of the people. He said neither his office nor the Penang Water Supply Corporation need to provide any further clarification on the statewide water supply disruption from 6am tomorrow until 6pm on Sunday as it had been explained a month ago, and thorough preparations have been made to assist all affected users during the five days. “We are now at the 48-hour countdown (before the disruption date). Any criticism, excuses and also explanations given a month ago are already sufficient,” he told reporters during an inspection of the logistical preparations for jumbo tankers in the car park of the City Stadium yesterday. “As such, there is no need to argue or dispute because now everyone needs to focus to ensure the replacement of the valves runs smoothly without sudden technical disruptions or floods. Many factors can affect the works, but we hope it can be completed within the set period.” He also expressed hope consumers will be patient, store enough water for household use during the period and at the same time, be informed that emergency supply tankers would supply water to affected areas as needed. A total of 59,000 consumers, including those in the non-domestic sector, would be affected by the disruption to allow for the replacement of two 1,200mm valves at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant, as well as other works at 22 locations statewide. Chow, who is also Penang Water Supply Corporation chairman, said the state government could not postpone the repair works despite objections from certain parties because it had already been planned in advance, Bernama reported. He said the corporation was also on standby to mobilise all 99 water tankers with capacities ranging from 40,000 to 50,000 litres to affected areas, in addition to supplying 97 static tanks, including 19 flexi tanks with capacities of 24,000 litres, as well as additional tanks organised by elected representatives. “This disruption involves 80% of all consumers in the state, while the rest are not affected because they receive water from other treatment plants, including the ones in Air Itam, Batu Ferringhi, Bukit Panchor and Tok Alang in Bukit Mertajam.” Chow said once the valve replacement is completed, the next focus would be on recovery in stages, during which water supply is expected to be restored to 33% within 48 hours, and 84% within 72 hours. Supply will fully resume within 96 hours as some areas are located at the end of the distribution network and in highland areas. In a related development, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said employers can be fined up to RM50,000 under the Employment Act 1955 if they dock wages of their workers or force them to go on annual leave should they opt to halt operations during the water supply disruption period. He was responding to claims by some workers in the manufacturing sector that they had been asked by their employers to utilise their annual leave during shutdown of their company operations as a result of the water cuts. Prioritise interests of rakyat, politicians told KOTA BELUD: Politicians in the country have been urged against pursuing their political interests at the expense of the rakyat. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said they should not make the people victims or pay a “high price” for their political pursuits. He added that differences in opinion or beliefs in politics are not a problem, but priority must be given to the interests of the people. Ahmad Zahid said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was working hard to ensure the country remains stable to ensure development, economic growth, investment and the wellbeing of the people. “Political leaders should keep their promises. After agreeing on something, there should be a consensus on keeping the promises and the agreement should not be made for the interests of their group (alone), which eventually will make the rakyat the political victims. “Make Sabah an example for us to accept differences in diversity. The cooperation in Sabah should be emulated and strengthened for the prosperity of the people.” Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development minister, was speaking at the launch of Kadamaian Development in conjunction with the Kadamaian Christmas Celebration Open House, which was also attended by Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. Ahmad Zahid said the road infrastructure improvement project in Kadamaian, involving an allocation of RM244 million, as a game changer in improving the standard of living of the people in the area. He also announced the construction of 40 housing units for the hardcore poor in the Kadamaian state constituency. On Ewon’s other requests for the people of Kadamaian, he said he would ensure allocations would be provided after going through the set procedures. – Bernama ‘Stop bickering about water supply disruption’ oEnough explanation provided, time now to focus on repairs and recovery: Penang CM Govt-state talks on digital direction KUCHING: The Digital Ministry will hold discussions with all states to gather feedback to ensure no discrepancies arise in adapting to the digital direction adopted by the government. Its minister Gobind Singh Deo said the meetings would also ensure the goals of the existing digital sector in all states can be aligned with the direction of the ministry, which will be announced by May, Bernama reported. “We hope in the next three or four months, we will be able to make an announcement on the direction of the Digital Ministry that aligns with what we see as the direction in each state. “I find that most states have started the digitalisation process and have their own state directions. Comprehensive governance structure launched SEPANG: The Prime Minister’s Directive No. 1 was introduced yesterday to ensure that ministries, departments and agencies, including statutory bodies, take effective action in addressing weaknesses in governance, as well as corruption and integrity issues. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the directive outlines a more comprehensive governance structure to replace the Cabinet Special Committee on AntiCorruption. Four terms of reference outlined in the directive are Institutional, Policy and Law Reforms, Work Systems and Procedures, Monitoring and Evaluation and Cultivation of Value Practices and Good Governance. “The directive is structured based on the principle of enhancing accountability and the practice of values as a work culture in the public service. “High-quality employees resulting from the practice of integrity and good governance are essential assets for the success of any organisation and country,” he said in his speech at the launch of the directive by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the National Good Governance Symposium. “Compliance with existing laws and regulations can foster a culture of integrity, responsibility and an anti-corruption society.” He said good governance is also among the nation’s key agendas in addressing corruption, as outlined in the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan tabled by Anwar last September. Azam also said the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), developed by the government after the conclusion of the National AntiCorruption Plan last year, reflects the high expectations of the people towards a corruption-free nation through the principles of transparency, accountability and integrity. He added that although the development of NACS falls under the responsibility of MACC, the effectiveness of its implementation will be realised through synergy and commitment from all parties, especially government ministries, departments and agencies. – Bernama HEAVY ESCORT ... Nine primary schools are being converted into flood relief centres while secondary schools will be used as SPM and STPM examination centres. A total of 6,564 evacuees from 1,819 families are being housed at 51 relief centres in Johor, as of 8am yesterday. – Bernama Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd, told theSun that it will release a statement once the fire department has completed its investigations. As of 2011, about 12,000 EVs have been registered in the country. Of this, more than 9,000 were registered in 2023. EVs make up 0.4% of the total number of vehicles sold in Malaysia. Soo said while internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and EVs can catch fire, it is harder to control such incidents involving the latter because the risk of re-ignition is higher due to the thermal runaway not being completely extinguished. Thermal runaway is a process that is accelerated by increased temperature, which in turn releases energy that further increases temperature, in a continuous cycle. “The battery cell of an EV can expand during a fire, and when this happens, it will release flammable electrolytes and gases which can lead to a self-sustaining process that requires up to 100,000 litres more of water to put out, compared with that for a fire involving an ICE car. “The constant re-ignition can also cause the fire to take up to 24 hours to put out.” Soo said the most effective way to put out fires involving lithium battery ions is by using a “cutting fire extinguisher” to submerge the battery in water. “The cutting fire extinguisher combines abrasive waterjet cutting with a water spray extinguisher. The water pierces the battery pack from the undercarriage of the vehicle and floods it to put out the fire. “The traditional method of putting out a combustion engine will not be as effective as the fire has to be put out from the source. For EV cars, this is the lithium-ion battery pack.” Soo said another solution to control EV fires is the use of EV fire blankets. “The blankets are made from specially treated high-temperature fibreglass cloth that is usually coated with silicon to increase their fireproof abilities. EV fire blankets can withstand the heat emitted by an EV, which can reach up to 1,100°C. “The role of the EV fire blanket is to cover the burning car and ensure it does not spread to other vehicles, or worse, ignite the building.” He said EV fire blankets are the most technologically advanced and cost-effective method to date and that this technology can be integrated into the Fire and Rescue Department’s arsenal to put out EV fires. He added that the public needs to be more informed about taking precautions when facing an EV fire. hundreds of years, treasures that are hard to find in the modern era. Asked about the methods he employs in the hunt for antiques, Zai Am said most of them are sourced through information exchanged with friends and fellow antique collectors. “Being an electrician helps in my quest for these vintage items. Sometimes, when I’m called to fix electrical problems at my client’s home, I stumble upon vintage items tucked away in their storage. “Some of these collectibles are bought, while others are given to me by the homeowners,” he added. Zai Am is also grateful for his wife and children’s unwavering support for and understanding of his passion. “My children also share the same interest. I’ve told them to take good care of the items because they are hard to replace,” he said. – Bernama

TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 6 @thesundaily FOLLOW ON Malaysian Paper INSTAGRAM 160,000 accounts, phone numbers linked to scammers o54% of cases involve individuals aged 21 to 40, with victims suffering losses of RM2.5 billion: Study PETALING JAYA: The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department SemakMule database identified 160,095 bank accounts and phone numbers linked to scammers in 2023. A study by the National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption, based on data collected between January and September 2023, showed 54% of the 79,559 reported online scam cases involved individuals between the age of 21 and 40. “These scams inflicted a staggering RM2.5 billion in financial losses on victims,” said the study. A private university chief innovation and enterprise officer Prof Dr Vinesh Thiruchelvam said if the scamming issue is not promptly addressed, an increasing number of people will become victims. “Various tech-related scams have surfaced, such as fake disaster relief e-payments, banking phishing emails, counterfeit antivirus pop-ups, love scams, formjacking on fake retail sites (cybercriminals injecting malicious codes into a website form page to capture sensitive user data) and travel frauds on platforms such as Pinterest and X. “The advent of digital media has introduced sophisticated threats, such as voice cloning, the creation of deepfake images and targeted email schemes, which are all designed to deceive individuals either online or through mobile channels,” Vinesh said, adding that scammers have continually adapted their tactics in line with technological advancements. “The emergence of ‘Voice AI’ has transformed into a tool for organised phishing, while deepfakes have been utilised to convert WhatsApp messages into convincing phone calls. “AI’s capacity to automate tasks allows scammers to rapidly scour the internet for valuable data and information. This amplifies the scale and efficiency of their fraudulent activities.” He said scammers often target specific demographics and sectors with tailored tactics, exploiting vulnerabilities in digital banking and payment systems. “The elderly, who are increasingly engaging with social media and mobile apps, have become prime targets for personalised scams. “Children under 15 face significant risks from social engineering schemes, which manipulate individuals into disclosing information or taking actions for fraudulent purposes. “In these attacks, scammers breach authentication protocols and employ chatbots, which is an application designed to mimic human conversation through text or voice interactions to impersonate call centres, deceiving victims on a peer-to-peer basis.” Vinesh said individuals could leverage conversational agents equipped with machine learning models to effectively detect and stop tech-driven scams. “It is crucial to stay informed about emerging scam trends through professional resources and educate older and younger generations about cyber threats. “Maintaining vigilance is key. This includes refraining from opening emails from unfamiliar sources, diligently securing personal data and consistently using unique passwords for access.” He proposed looking for trust marks displayed at the footer or header of e-commerce checkout pages, indicating accreditation from reputable internet security entities such as Norton or McAfee to distinguish between legitimate online vendors and potential scam websites. He also suggested inspecting the website URL in the address bar and verify its domain as well as check for a valid Secure Sockets Layer certificate. “Be wary of pixelated images, grammatical inconsistencies in website content, unprofessional web design or dubious payment methods, as these are red flags that signal potential scams,” he said, adding that the future of tech-related scams is shaped by the dual growth of beneficial and malicious ICT applications. “Emerging technologies in enterprise and entertainment are becoming prime targets and financial institutions using facial or voice recognition face deepfake threats. “As scammers exploit blockchain vulnerabilities, crypto fraud is expected to rise. “People need to be aware of this issue now to avoid becoming victims.” KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has requested the prosecution in his 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) trial take action over the “Man on the Run” documentary shown on Netflix, on grounds that it is extremely subjudice and contemptuous to his ongoing case. It was released in Malaysia on Oct 19 last year and premiered on Netflix last Friday. It said Low stole the money, and politicians aided and abetted. When such statements are made, only one politician will come to people’s minds. “Former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas also took part in the interview and he made his conclusion (regarding Najib and Low) outside of the court,” said Muhammad Shafee. “Can I invite DPP Ahmad Akram Gharib to watch the documentary and take it to the Malaysian Communications And Multimedia Commission (MCMC) or the Home Ministry for it to be pulled out because all of these (interviews) in the documentary are completely subjudice? “We are also mulling action against Thomas and (Sarawak Report editor) Clare RewcastleBrown for their alleged statements.” Ahmad Akram said he just learned about the documentary recently and has not watched it yet. “I will have to watch it first and see whether I should report it to the AG and get further instructions from him. As of Sunday, almost a week later, more than 2,000 people were still cut off by the damage the quake and an estimated 1,000 landslides did to roads on the worst-hit Noto Peninsula. In the last two days, the region has also been blanketed in snow, with some areas receiving more than 10cm overnight, making the operation harder still. Days of rain increased the risk of further landslides, while the fresh heavy snow could cause more buildings to collapse under its weight, the regional government warned. About 18,000 households in the Ishikawa region remained without electricity yesterday, while more than 66,100 households were without water on Sunday. For the 28,800 people packed into government shelters, many were also without sufficient water, electricity and heating, according to media reports. “Disaster-related deaths must be prevented at all costs. I want to improve the poor environment in shelters,” Ishikawa governor Hiroshi Hase told broadcaster NHK. “The first priority has been to rescue people under the rubble, and to reach isolated communities,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Sunday. The government has “deployed various police and fire department helicopters” as well as small groups of troops on foot to reach the isolated communities, he said. Japan experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year, though most cause no damage because of strict building codes in place for more than four decades. But many structures are older, especially in rapidly ageing communities in rural areas like Noto. – AFP Firefighters search for survivors in snow-covered ruins in the city of Suzu a week after a major earthquake. – AFPPIC violate Taiwanese airspace at will and challenge its sovereignty,” said Raymond Kuo, Taiwan Policy Initiative director at RAND Corporation. Self-ruled Taiwan is claimed by China as part of its territory, with Beijing’s leadership vowing to bring the island under its control. The Jan 13 election pits frontrunner Lai Ching-te, whose ruling Democratic Progressive Party said Taiwan is a sovereign nation, against two others who have pledged warmer relationships with Beijing. The timing of the balloons’ appearance is “political”, said Kuo. “The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) is attempting to demoralise the Taiwanese public in the run-up to next week’s presidential and legislative elections,” he said. But its military purpose is “in line with broader China’s grey zone coercion strategy towards Taiwan”. “Beijing is adding yet another operational challenge to Taiwan’s defence forces, which could erode readiness and resilience,” he said. After initially saying they were weather balloons, Taipei’s defence ministry called them “an attempt to use cognitive warfare to affect the morale of our people”. It also said they posed a “serious threat” to aviation routes. When asked about the balloons, China’s defence ministry dismissed allegations of interference and accused Taiwan of trying to “manipulate the election”. Balloons from China became a politically fraught topic last February, when the US shot down what it called a spy balloon. Beijing has said it was a civilian airship blown off-course. More than 20 balloons have crossed the sensitive median line separating China from Taiwan since December, with at least seven of them passing directly over the island. Sighted during the daytime and evenings, they move at altitudes ranging from 12,000 to 36,000 feet, according to Taipei’s defence ministry. With commercial flights usually cruising between 24,000 and 40,000 feet, the balloons around Taiwan “do pose a threat and potentially cause disruption to air traffic”, said independent aviation expert Gerry Soejatman. Weather balloons would disintegrate upon impact, but if they carry a different payload such as those seen over the US, Soejatman said they “pose a severe risk of damage to commercial aircraft it collides with”. – AFP Indonesia presidential frontrunner under fire JAKARTA: Indonesian presidential frontrunner Prabowo Subianto suffered a barrage of attacks in a heated election debate on Sunday, with his two opponents taking aim at his military procurement strategy as defence minister, calling him reckless and wasteful. Third-time candidate Prabowo, a former special forces commander, has held a strong lead in opinion polls for the Feb 14 election, but his military modernisation drive drew flak in a second televised faceoff focused on security and geopolitics. Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan denounced Prabowo’s plans to procure used military equipment, including a fleet of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from Qatar and accused his defence ministry of failing to protect itself from hackers who last year threatened to leak confidential information. “Ironically, defence ministry was hacked,” Anies said. “The 700 trillion rupiah (RM210 billion) budget cannot be used to contain it. Instead, it is used to buy secondhand military equipment.” Dressed for the debate in an air forcestyle bomber jacket, the ruling party’s candidate Ganjar Pranowo said the jets deal, which the government has delayed over budget issues, was “reckless planning”. All 379 passengers and crew escaped the burning Japan Airlines plane after the January 2 crash, but five of the six people on the coast guard aircraft that it collided with were killed. The runway at Haneda, one of four where the crash happened, has been closed since then, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of mostly domestic flights at one of the world’s busiest airports. “Runway C resumed operation today (Monday)” so the airport is back to normal operation, a Tokyo airport spokeswoman told AFP. Workers have removed the charred remains of the two planes and Japanese investigators together with counterparts from France, Britain and Canada are probing the accident. – AFP EU TO REPLACE COUNCIL PRESIDENT MICHEL BRUSSELS: European Council president Charles Michel announced on Sunday that he will step down early, setting off a race against time for EU leaders to find a successor for the key position. The 48-year-old former Belgian prime minister has been organising EU summits and government meetings since 2019 and should leave office in November. But he said he would leave early as he will stand in the European parliament elections to be held in June. Michel will be the head of the liberal Reformist Movement in the elections. “Four years after starting my term as a European leader, it’s my responsibility to give an account of my work these past years and to propose a project for Europe’s future,” Michel said. He added that he was ready to take a “personal risk” in standing down in such controversial circumstances. – AFP
TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 8 Bangladesh PM re-elected without opposition candidates in a few constituencies, in an apparent effort to avoid the legislature being branded a one-party institution. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), whose ranks have been decimated by mass arrests, called a general strike and, along with dozens of others, refused to participate in a “sham election”. While the final result and exact figures will be formally announced at a ceremony overnight, election commission officials said Hasina’s party had won around three-quarters of seats, at least 220 of the total 300. But support of other lawmakers, including from allied parties, could push Hasina’s control over parliament even higher. Hasina, 76, had called for citizens to show faith in the democratic process. “The BNP is a terrorist organisation,” she told reporters after casting her vote. “I am trying my best to ensure that democracy should continue in this country.” BNP head Tarique Rahman, speaking from Britain where he lives in exile, told AFP he feared “fake votes” would be used to boost voter turnout. “What unfolded was not an election, but rather a disgrace to the democratic aspirations of Bangladesh,” he wrote on social media, alleging he had seen “disturbing pictures and videos” backing his claims. Among the victors was Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh cricket team captain, who won his seat for Hasina’s party in a landslide, local officials said. The BNP and other parties staged months of protests last year, demanding Hasina step down ahead of the vote. Officers in the port city of Chittagong broke up an opposition protest on Sunday, firing shotguns and tear gas canisters but election officials said voting was largely peaceful. Meenakshi Ganguly, from Human Rights Watch, said that the government had failed to reassure opposition supporters that the polls would be fair, warning that “many fear a further crackdown”. Politics in the country of 170 million people has long been dominated by the rivalry between Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of the country’s founding leader, and two-time premier Khaleda Zia, wife of a former military ruler. Hasina has been the decisive victor since returning to power in a 2009 landslide, with two subsequent polls accompanied by widespread irregularities and accusations of rigging. Investigators say it is too early to determine what caused a so-called door plug to fall off from the side of an aircraft operated by one of Boeing’s most loyal customers, Alaska Airlines, on Friday with 171 passengers on board. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Sunday that 171 Boeing MAX 9 airplanes would remain grounded until the agency is convinced they can safely operate. The mishap comes as Boeing and supplier Spirit AeroSystems , which made the panel, are grappling with ongoing production setbacks that have hampered recovery from an earlier lengthy 737 MAX safety grounding and wider disruption from the pandemic. Boeing has been under pressure to expand the MAX portfolio and narrow a gap with rival Airbus, which has extended gains in market share since two Boeing MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed nearly 350 people and led to the MAX’s worldwide grounding for 20 months. The MAX’s troubled history resulted in sweeping reforms of US airplane regulation in 2020, and the Alaska incident could prompt regulators to take a tougher line on other outstanding issues. Airlines increasingly want to carry more passengers in single-aisle aircraft to take advantage of increases in performance and range while benefiting from their lower cost. After disappointing sales of the MAX 9, Boeing’s largest narrowbody, the company was betting on its newest proposal, the larger-capacity MAX 10, to cut into runaway sales of Airbus’s A321neo at the busiest end of the market. Analysts say a full rollout of the MAX line-up is crucial to help Boeing steady or improve its roughly 40% market share and generate enough cash to comfortably ride out the coming decade. – Reuters Australian police bust native reptile smuggling ring SYDNEY: An Australian-based criminal syndicate plotted to smuggle hundreds of native reptiles into Hong Kong as part of a murky trade in live animals, police alleged yesterday. Detectives began investigating the network in September last year, after intercepting nine packages bound for Hong Kong with 59 live lizards stashed inside. They allegedly discovered more than 250 lizards after searching a number of properties scattered across Sydney, as well as a small number of snakes and unhatched eggs. Police said the captured reptiles were “kept in poor conditions” before they were “bound in small containers” to be sold in Hong Kong. Photos taken by police showed writhing lizards piled on top of each other in small plastic bins filled with soiled pellets. Another photo showed a snake curling around a clutch of eggs in a clear plastic tub packed with wood chips. Each lizard could fetch as much as AU$5,000 (RM15,576) on the black market, police said, giving the total seized haul a street value of as much as AU$1.2 million (RM3.74 million). Police have charged three men allegedly involved in the “criminal syndicate” – aged 59, 54 and 31 – as well as a 41-year-old woman. Hong Kong is a major global transit point for the illegal trade in live animals, according to the World Wildlife Fund. – AFP B R I E F SMACRON TO NAME NEW GOVERNMENT CHIEF PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron could choose a new prime minister, according to his entourage, as he seeks a new look for a widely criticised government. The position of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has been tenuous ever since an immigration bill pushed by Macron was voted down in parliament last month. It was finally passed with many controversial changes imposed by the centre-right opposition. Macron, who is also facing a growing challenge from the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen, met with Borne Sunday night. His office said the discussion centred on flooding in northern France and a looming freeze across the country, but observers said they likely discussed a widely-predicted cabinet reshuffle. Francois Bayrou, a centrist leader whose early endorsement of Macron was key to his initial 2017 election success, told BFM television that “a change is necessary” in the government makeup. – AFP LULA FETES DEMOCRACY A YEAR AFTER RIOTS BRASILIA: President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will mark the first anniversary today of the far-right riots that rocked the Brazilian capital last year, with a ceremony in Congress declaring “democracy unbowed”. Lula will convene a Who’s Who of Brazil’s political bigwigs to take stock of what he calls the “coup attempt” of Jan 8, 2023, but with key absences on the right undermining his message of unity. Tens of thousands of supporters of Lula’s defeated election rival, far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, stormed the presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court that day, trashing the premises and calling on the military to oust the veteran leftist. The scenes were eerily reminiscent of the US Capitol invasion in Washington almost exactly two years earlier by supporters of then-president Donald Trump, Bolsonaro’s political role model. – AFP DHAKA: Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won re-election for a fifth term on Sunday, officials said, following a boycott led by an opposition party she branded a “terrorist organisation”. Hasina’s ruling Awami League “has won the election”, an Election Commission spokesman told AFP in the early hours of yesterday morning, after a vote that initial reports suggested had a meagre turnout of about 40%. She has presided over breakneck economic growth in a country once beset by grinding poverty, but her government has been accused of rampant human rights abuses and a ruthless opposition crackdown. Her party faced almost no effective rivals in the seats it contested, but it avoided fielding
TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 9 British-Palestinian surgeon fights for ‘justice’ oMeets with UK police force to testify about injuries witnessed, weapons used as part of evidence for ICC probe LONDON: A British-Palestinian doctor who worked in Gazan hospitals during the Israel-Hamas conflict hopes that testimony he has given to UK police will lead to prosecutions for war crimes. Ghassan Abu Sitta, a plastic surgeon specialising in conflict injuries, spent 43 days volunteering in the besieged Palestinian territory, mostly at the al-Ahli and Shifa hospitals in the north. The 54-year-old has already testified to the Met, the UK’s biggest police force, about the injuries he saw and the kinds of weapons used, as part of evidence being gathered for an International Criminal Court (ICC) probe into alleged war crimes committed by both sides. Ghassan is due to travel to The Hague this week to meet ICC investigators. He said the intensity of the war was the greatest of the numerous conflicts he has worked in, including others in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and south Lebanon. “It’s the difference between a flood and a tsunami. The whole scale is completely different,” Ghassan told AFP during an interview in London on Sunday. “Just the sheer number of the wounded, the size of the calamity, the number of children killed, the intensity of the bombing, the fact that within days of the war starting Gaza’s health system was completely overwhelmed.” Israel’s relentless bombardment and ground invasion have killed at least 22,835 people, most of them women and children, according to health officials. Ghassan – born in Kuwait and who has lived in Britain since the late 1980s – arrived in Gaza from Egypt on Oct 9 as part of a Doctors Without Borders medical team. “From the very beginning our capacity was less than the number of wounded we were having to treat. Increasingly we were having to make very difficult decisions about who to treat,” he recalled. Ghassan remembers one 40- year-old man coming into hospital with shrapnel in his head. He needed a CT scan, and to see a neurosurgeon, but they did not have one. “We told his children and they stayed around his trolley that night Two journalists killed in Israeli strike GAZA: Al Jazeera said on Sunday two of its Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip were killed in an Israeli strike on their car, in what the Qatarbased media network claimed was a “targeted killing”. Hamza Wael Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuria, who also worked as a video stringer for AFP and other news organisations, were killed while they were “on their way to carry out their duty” for the channel in the Gaza Strip, the network said. A third freelance journalist travelling with them, Hazem Rajab, was seriously injured. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza also confirmed the deaths and blamed an Israeli strike. Witnesses told AFP that two rockets were fired at the car, one hit the front of the vehicle and the other hit Hamza who was sitting next to the driver. “We later found the body parts (of those in the car). The ambulance then came and carried those who were in the car,” a witness, who declined to give his name for security reasons, said. The Israeli army said it had “struck a terrorist who operated an aircraft that posed a threat to IDF troops”, adding that it was “aware of the reports that during the strike, two other suspects who were in the same vehicle as the terrorist were also hit”. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the journalists’ deaths were an “unimaginable tragedy”. “And that’s also been the case for far too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children,” he said in Doha during a regional tour. Video footage showed a crowd of people inspecting the car’s mangled remains, while pools of blood lay on the road. No other damage was visible in the area. Al Jazeera said in a statement it “strongly condemns the Israeli occupation forces’ targeting of the Palestinian journalists’ car”, accusing Israel of “targeting” journalists and “violating the principles of freedom of the press”. Hamza’s father Wael al-Dahdouh is Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief and was recently wounded in a strike himself after his wife and two other children were killed in Israeli bombardment in the initial weeks of the war. “Hamza was everything for me while we are full of humanity they (Israel) are full of murder and hatred,” Dahdouh said on Al Jazeera television. German FM calls for ‘less intensive’ strikes JERUSALEM: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Sunday urged Israel to ease its military campaign in Gaza and do more to protect civilians in the besieged Palestinian territory. Germany has been one of Israel’s most steadfast supporters since the start of the conflict with Hamas, but Baerbock warned that Israel’s security also depended on limiting civilian deaths. “It is increasingly clear that the Israeli army must do more to protect civilians in Gaza. It must find ways to fight Hamas without harming large numbers of Palestinians,” she said. “The suffering of many innocent people cannot go on like this. We need less intensive management of operations,” Baerbock said on a visit to Jerusalem as the Israel-Hamas war entered a fourth month. The foreign minister still reaffirmed Germany’s strong support for Israel on her fourth trip to the region since the war erupted on Oct 7. “Your country can strongly count on our solidarity in the fight against the blind terror that seeks to wipe Israel off the the map,” Baerbock said. “If Hamas did not fanatically pursue this senseless struggle, the war would have been long finished,” she added. But Baerbock also said Israel had to clearly consider how it would fight the war and handle Gaza after the conflict. She said Palestinians must not be “expelled” from the territory, referring to calls by extreme right wing Israeli politicians for settlers to return to Gaza. – AFP B R I E F SAIRPORT SCREENS HACKED BY HEZBOLLAH CRITICS BEIRUT: Beirut airport on Sunday came under a cyberattack, Lebanon’s state news agency said, with footage shared by local media showing anti-Hezbollah messages had replaced screen displays at its terminal. Hezbollah has exchanged near-daily cross-border fire with its arch foe Israel since war with Hamas broke out on Oct 7, with the Lebanese movement saying it was acting in support of its Palestinian ally in Gaza. Media reports said the airport message urged the powerful Iran-backed group Hezbollah not to “drag the country into war”. Lebanon’s National News Agency said “the cyberattack on the departure and arrival screens at the airport disrupted the baggage inspection system.” It added that authorities were working to restore the screens “and to maintain normal movement at the airport”. Local media circulated images of the message criticising Hezbollah, displayed onscreen alongside the emblem of the Christian “Soldiers of God” group. – AFP BLINKEN DUE IN ISRAEL FOR TOUGH TALKS TEL AVIV: Top US diplomat Antony Blinken is in Israel since yesterday for difficult talks on the war in Gaza as fears grow that the conflict could engulf the wider region. Speaking in Qatar on Sunday, Blinken said that Palestinians displaced by the now four-month-old war must be allowed to “return home”, while warning that the violence could “easily metastasize” into a regional conflict. Since the start of the IsraelHamas war, violence has escalated in the occupied West Bank and on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, while Yemen’s Huthi rebels have launched more than 100 drone and missile strikes towards targets in the Red Sea and Israel. The US secretary of state was scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia on Monday before arriving in Israel. – AFP Palestinians inspecting the remains of a car in which two journalists were killed in an Israeli strike. – REUTERSPIC until he passed away in the morning,” he said. The hospitals also quickly ran out of anaesthetic and analgesic drugs, meaning the surgeon had to perform “really painful cleaning procedures of wounds” without relief. “It was a choice between doing that or watching them succumb to the wound infections and dying from sepsis,” he added. Ghassan is adamant that he treated burn wounds caused by white phosphorus. Its use as a chemical weapon is prohibited under international law, but it is allowed for illuminating battlefields and as a smokescreen. Ghassan said he left Gaza after becoming “redundant” because a lack of medical supplies meant he could no longer perform surgery. He has spent much of his time back in Britain briefing politicians and humanitarian organisations on the urgent need for aid.

Read our iPaper at https://www.thesun.my/ Navigating inclusive energy transition THE global emphasis on transitioning to renewable energy took centre stage at COP28 in Dubai, resulting in a historic agreement where nations pledged to move away from fossil fuels and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. While the outcome emphasised transitioning from fossil fuels in an orderly and equitable manner, it also highlighted the need to address the financial challenges associated with the widespread implementation of renewables. The agreement also recognised the complex role of transitional fuels in the energy transition, especially in the context of oil and gas producing countries. These aspects are likely to be important discussion points at the next United Nations climate summit. Malaysia has demonstrated proactiveness in embracing decarbonisation and renewable energy. The government has urged the private sector to join this transition, aligning with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). The NETR prioritises a balanced approach that takes into account the environmental impact, commercial feasibility and stakeholder well-being. It aims to embed social inclusion, sustainable employment and resilient community development in the energy transition process. Malaysia has set ambitious targets, aiming for 70% of its energy supply from renewables by 2050, a notable increase from the previous goal of 40% by 2035. The Sustainable Energy Development prospectus, launched at COP28, outlines the country’s strategies for energy-related companies to contribute to this transition. In addition, Masdar, a UAE-based renewable energy company, signed agreements at COP28 to explore a 1000- megawatt solar project in Malaysia. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, transitioning to renewable energy can annually save Malaysia between US$9 billion (RM41.8 billion) and US$13 billion (RM60.4 billion) by reducing climate and health costs. The report affirms Malaysia’s potential to achieve its net-zero goal with an increased focus on renewables. As Malaysia progresses in renewable energy, it is crucial to recognise the broader societal implications, especially for vulnerable communities. The transition will significantly impact children, youths and marginalised communities positively by improving air quality, reducing health risks and providing new educational and employment opportunities in the green economy. Ensuring an inclusive transition where the voices of these groups are heard in decision-making processes related to renewable energy projects is essential. The concept of a just transition, ensuring a fair and equitable shift to a sustainable economy, will gain prominence as the world moves towards renewable energy. Prioritising a just transition involves creating green job opportunities, supporting affected workers and communities and ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy are accessible to all. Renewable energy sources offer multifaceted advantages for the environment and society. Lower maintenance requirements compared with traditional fossil fuel alternatives will result in reduced operational costs, enhancing the economic viability of renewable energy. Environmental benefits, such as minimal greenhouse gas emissions, will contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment. The shift will enhance energy security by reducing dependence on geopolitically risky fossil fuels, serving as a catalyst for job creation and improving public health by reducing air pollution. However, challenges accompany renewable energy sources, including higher upfront costs, intermittent energy production, limited storage capabilities for certain sources and geographic limitations. Recognising and addressing these challenges is crucial for a sustainable and resilient energy future. While Malaysia has made commendable commitments, attention to financing and grid enhancement is necessary for higher shares of renewable energy in the electricity mix. Exploring alternatives to natural gas, such as combining renewable energy with nuclear energy, can ensure a just, sustainable and secure transition. The promises made and goals set at COP28 show a shared understanding of the need for change. However, as we move toward cleaner energy, it is crucial to consider not just the upsides and downsides but also to make sure everyone benefits. Getting to a sustainable energy future means keeping up the talk, working together across borders and coming up with new ideas. Governments, businesses and banks need to rethink their plans to keep pace with the changing world of renewable energy. Energy transition is not just about switching power sources but a big shift in how we do things that should take into account the needs of everyone, especially those who may get left behind. The choices we make today will have far-reaching consequences. Let us aim for an energy future that is not just good for the environment but fair for everyone, and viable too. 11 TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 Balancing act with technology CO M M U N I C AT I O N t e c h n o l o g y , notably instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram, has become integral in organisational dynamics today. These platforms, designed initially for personal use, have seamlessly infiltrated professional settings, reshaping how colleagues collaborate and share information. Their swift adoption within organisations stems from their real-time messaging, multimedia sharing and user-friendly interfaces, enabling swift communication and facilitating prompt decision-making. Despite their efficiency, the constant connectivity these platforms offer blurs work-life boundaries, necessitating clear communication protocols and mindful usage to preserve employees’ well-being. The trend showcases a shift towards immediate and interactive communication in workplaces, urging organisations to strike a balance between leveraging these tools for productivity while safeguarding employees’ personal time. WhatsApp has established itself as a leading instant messaging application renowned for its intuitive interface and a myriad of compelling features catering to various communication needs. It stands out as a user-friendly platform, accessible for download on smartphones at no charge. Offering an array of functionalities, WhatsApp presents an appealing suite of capabilities such as document sharing, photo and location sharing as well as status updates, enabling seamless exchanges among users and their networks of family and friends. Moreover, this innovative technology has voice and video calling features, transcending geographical boundaries to facilitate cost-free global conversations. Notably, WhatsApp ensures user privacy through robust end-to-end encryption, assuring users of the confidentiality and security of their communications. These attributes collectively exemplify WhatsApp’s effectiveness in addressing various communication needs, reinforcing its position as a versatile platform for personal and professional interactions. The allure of WhatsApp’s features has led many organisations to adopt it as their communication platform of choice. This transition has revolutionised workplace interactions, redefining how colleagues engage, collaborate and exchange information. Initially utilised as a casual conversation tool, WhatsApp is now used for expediting the flow of information among coworkers. Fostering team cohesion and information sharing, WhatsApp has seamlessly embedded itself within professional landscapes, emerging as a critical platform for work-related discussions, document sharing and collaborative endeavours. Nevertheless, this assimilation into professional realms has unearthed unforeseen challenges. The use of WhatsApp highlights the ease of instant communication, unintentionally eroding the boundaries separating professional commitments from personal life. The pervasive accessibility of the application, operating around the clock, intrudes upon employees’ time, disturbing the delicate balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being. WhatsApp can inadvertently impose pressure on employees. The visibility of one’s “online” status and the expectation for prompt replies often induce an implicit obligation to be constantly available. This perpetual connectivity, even beyond designated work hours, generates stress and hampers work-life equilibrium. Navigating the complexities arising from WhatsApp’s integration into the professional domain necessitates a balanced approach. Organisations have an imperative task of formulating comprehensive guidelines to regulate their usage effectively. These guidelines should delineate the norms for communication within working hours, acknowledging the importance of uninterrupted personal time. They may outline expectations regarding response times, encouraging a culture that respects employees’ boundaries while ensuring effective collaboration during designated work hours. In summary, WhatsApp’s metamorphosis from a personal messaging application to an integral workplace communication tool underscores its undeniable impact on organisational dynamics. While fostering efficiency and collaboration, its omnipresence challenges the traditional boundaries between work and personal life. The path forward lies in establishing nuanced guidelines that will strike a delicate balance between harnessing the application’s efficiency and safeguarding employees’ well-being. This endeavour requires a concerted effort from leaders to implement and reinforce these guidelines. The goal is to create an environment where productivity thrives without compromising the holistic well-being of employees. Comments: [email protected] Van and e-hailing services must be accessible to marginalised groups I READ with interest the announcement by Transport Minister Anthony Loke on the introduction of the on-demand transit van service, or demand-responsive transit (DRT), in the Klang Valley to enhance public transportation interconnectivity. It was reported that part of the RM50 million allocation under Budget 2024 to enhance public transportation will be used to purchase vans, with Prasarana being tasked to oversee the operations. The ministry wants Prasarana to forge cooperation with companies offering van-ondemand services to expand the initiative in the Klang Valley. The implementation of the DRT service is likely to be done in collaboration with Kumpool, a renowned transportation service provider. Kumpool is a ride-pooling transportation service in Malaysia that offers faster, costeffective and better commuting experience to commuters. As Kumpool operates on a “ride-sharing” concept, the fare can be as low as RM1 or RM2 per ride, thus making it more affordable compared with other e-hailing rides. I wish to draw attention to the response given by Kumpool in its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on its website: Question: “Can Kumpool accommodate wheelchairs, baby strollers, luggage or large parcels? Answer: “We are currently unable to accept such requests.” What is unacceptable is that the disabled and elderly commuters in wheelchairs and children in strollers and their mothers are being excluded from this initiative. Why are these groups being sidelined? The Persons With Disabilities Act 2008 (PWD Act) on “Access to Public Transport Facilities” Article 27 states: Persons with disabilities shall have the right to access to and use public transport facilities, amenities and services open or provided to the public on an equal basis with persons without disabilities, 1. For purposes of subsection (1), the government and providers of such public transport facilities, amenities and services shall give appropriate consideration and take necessary measures to ensure that such facilities, amenities and services conform to universal design to facilitate their access and use by persons with disabilities. We urge Kumpool to remove the discriminatory response in the FAQs. In accordance with the PWD Act, Kumpool should take the necessary measures by providing wheelchair-accessible vans or vehicles, fitted with universal features, to enable easy access by persons with disabilities, elderly persons in wheelchairs and children in strollers and their mothers. With the advancement of technologies, Kumpool can also look into providing accessible booking applications, real-time travel information and tracking, among others, to enhance their services. Training is necessary to prepare drivers on how to serve the community better. Kumpool needs to engage with PWD and other stakeholders to gather feedback and inputs, in ensuring the services meet their needs and expectations. Kumpool must be ready to serve all communities including the marginalised and underserved groups, who may need this service the most. It is important to make mobility services accessible, safe and affordable for all communities. Kumpool should also extend door-to-door service, within the service zones, to those vulnerable groups for their safety and security. They include wheelchair users, people with walking difficulties, people with learning disabilities, autism, dementia, the blind and other disabled commuters, elderly persons and children and mothers. This service is important given the lack of safe and friendly pedestrian sidewalks leading to/from Kumpool pick-up/drop-off points. Allocate funds to purchase wheelchairaccessible vans/vehicles so that no one is left behind. Public transport must be inclusive, fair and equitable to all. This initiative will serve as a step in the right direction in promoting accessible rides and encouraging more ride-sharing and ehailing service providers to come forward to do the same. Currently, none of the ride-sharing and e-hailing services are wheelchair accessible. Very often, our bookings for e-hailing services are turned down if we mention that we are wheelchair-bound. Contrary to the general perception, not all of us live in institutional homes. We do not travel to hospitals or clinics only. Our journeys can be to anywhere, anytime. We take public transport just like anyone else. Accessible public transport and mobility services will help promote tourism. The World Health Organisation estimates 1.3 billion people experience moderate to significant disability. This represents 16% of the world’s population or one in six of us. If their spouses, children, caregivers and family members are included, the number is easily doubled. While this signifies a huge potential market for travel and tourism, it remains vastly untapped due to the lack of accessible public transport and mobility services as well as accessible tourism facilities and services. With Visit Malacca Year 2024 and Visit Malaysia Year 2026, providing accessible DRT service will be a timely move in helping Malaysia become a favourite holiday destination. Therefore, we call on Loke to ensure that Kumpool and other ride-sharing and e-hailing service providers in the country take appropriate measures to offer accessible mobility services in the Klang Valley and other states. To promote this initiative, the Transport Ministry can consider giving incentives to companies and their drivers for providing accessible DRT service. HEALTH HEALTH 12 TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 I N the realm of weight loss, numerous diets promise varying degrees of success, from veganism and low-calorie approaches to the Mediterranean diet and intermittent fasting. However, determining the most effective long-term strategy without compromising health remains a crucial question. A recent study conducted by researchers in the US has provided valuable insights, suggesting that low-carbohydrate diets, particularly those high in proteins, fats and carbohydrates from healthy, plant-based sources, are associated with slower long-term weight gain. Beyond the binary Lead author Binkai Liu, a research assistant in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, emphasised that the study goes beyond the simplistic dichotomy of “To carb or not to carb”? Instead, it dissects the composition of low-carbohydrate diets, offering a nuanced perspective on how these diets can impact health over extended periods, transcending the typical focus on weeks or months. Methodology To reach meaningful conclusions, the research team embarked on a comprehensive evaluation of different types of low-carbohydrate diets, focusing on their impact on long-term weight gain — an aspect that has often been overshadowed by the short-term benefits of these diets. The study involved the meticulous analysis of diet and weight data from 123,332 healthy adults spanning the years 1986 to 2018. Participants were drawn from three major studies: the Nurses’ Health Study, the Nurses’ Health Study II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Every four years, individuals provided information on their diet and weight, enabling researchers to assess adherence to five categories of low-carbohydrate diets. These categories encompassed diets emphasising both animal and plant-based fats and proteins, as well as those with a lower overall carbohydrate intake. Key findings Published in the esteemed journal JAMA Network Open, the research unearthed that the most effective diets for curtailing long-term weight gain were those centred around plant-based proteins and fats, coupled with “healthy” carbohydrates. These diets, characterised by plant-based proteins, healthy fats and a reduction in processed carbohydrates, proved significantly more beneficial in maintaining weight over the years. Conversely, participants following three other diets, particularly those emphasising animal proteins and fats, exhibited a higher average weight gain over the study period. The significance of these findings was particularly pronounced among participants under 55 who were overweight or obese and less physically active. Fruit, vegetables and pulses The research pinpointed specific dietary components that contribute to long-term effectiveness. Diets rich in pulses (such as lentils and beans), whole-grain cereals, soy products, vegetable oils, avocados, seeds, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products emerged as the most effective choices for sustained weight management. However, the study introduced a note of ambiguity regarding vegetable-based low-carbohydrate diets, emphasising plant proteins and fats. Only participants from the Nurses’ Health Study II reported significantly less weight gain in the long term, paving the way for additional research on this specific diet category. Implications and future directions The Department of Nutrition’s associate professor and senior author Qi Sun, highlighted the pivotal takeaway from the study - not all lowcarbohydrate diets are created equal in managing long-term weight. This realisation challenges prevailing notions about popular low-carb diets and emphasises the need for public health initiatives to promote dietary patterns that prioritise healthful foods, including whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. In conclusion, this comprehensive analysis delves into the intricacies of low-carbohydrate diets, unravelling their varying impacts on long-term weight management. The findings provide a nuanced understanding of the effectiveness of different low-carb approaches, reshaping dietary recommendations and underscoring the importance of embracing healthy, plant-based food choices for sustained well-being. - ETX Studio A low carb diet is recommended by researchers for better weight control. - ETX Studio Rethinking dementia CONTRARY to popular belief, genetics may not be the sole cause of early-onset dementia, according to groundbreaking research from the Universities of Exeter and Maastricht. The study, based on data from 356,052 participants under 65, identifies 15 environmental and lifestyle factors that significantly increase the risk of developing dementia before the age of 65. The risk factors include genetic predisposition, alcohol use disorders, social isolation, lower formal education, lower socio-economic status, vitamin D deficiency, depression, stroke, hearing impairment, diabetes and heart disease. The findings challenge the notion that genetics alone drive early-onset dementia, paving the way for new prevention strategies. Dr Stevie Hendriks from Maastricht University emphasises the serious impact of young-onset dementia, affecting individuals who often still have active lives, including jobs and family responsibilities. The study, published in JAMA Neurology, marks the largest and most robust investigation of its kind, offering hope for targeted interventions to reduce the risk of this debilitating condition. Professor David Llewellyn of the University of Exeter highlights the transformative potential of the study, indicating that action can be taken to reduce the risk through addressing various factors. The findings contribute to the evolving understanding of dementia risk and offer possibilities for both individual and societal-level interventions. Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Head of Clinical Research, Dr Leah Mursaleen, underscores the study’s importance in shedding light on factors influencing the risk of young-onset dementia, filling a crucial gap in knowledge. The research aligns with global efforts to reduce dementia risk through lifestyle modifications and targeted interventions, opening avenues for further exploration in broader studies. - ETX Studio Loneliness can cause the onset of dementia. - ETX Studio Decoding ecoding diets oPlant-powered low-carb diets and long-term success

They also agreed to merge resources, expertise, skills, knowledge and know-how in respect of the joint development. During the same event, Perak Corp welcomed earthworks and engineering specialist, Advancecon Holdings Bhd as the joint developer of SVTP. PKNPk chief executive Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak said that with years of experience under Advancecon’s belt for major development projects such Bandar Setia Alam, Setia EcoHill, Setia Eco Gardens, Eco Majestic and Tropicana Aman, Advancecon will be a great sparring partner for Perak Corp to take SVTP forward. “With the support of the Perak state government and the joint developers, we aim to secure RM14 billion of private investment and hope to contribute to Perak’s GDP (gross domestic product) in return,” he added. SVTP is strategically located among industrial parks such as Kanthan Industrial Park and PKNPk’s pride, Bandar Meru Raya; and Perak Corp looks at this as a key initiative to drive investments into the state. “We are pleased to strategically collaborate with Advancecon for the development of the SVTP to echo the vision of Perak Sejahtera 2030, a roadmap by the Perak State Government to rejuvenate the economic and social wellbeing of Perak. We are offering a real value proposition to attract private sector investments as a source of Perak’s continuous development. “We are optimistic that SVTP, driven by experienced development players, can support Perak’s rapidly developing industrial sector; and create more jobs and business opportunities. Through the development of SVTP, we aim to align the labour market, training programmes and economic activities to take Perak to the next level,” said Perak Corp group CEO Rosmin Mohamed. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamed said, “As Perak gains prominence arising from the Perak Sejahtera 2030 development agenda, the addition of a state-ofthe-art industrial park presents substantial opportunities for domestic and foreign direct investment and development.” He said the project will create 13,000 employment opportunities for the people of Perak. Advancecon CEO Datuk Phum Ang Kia said that PKNPk and Perak Corp are making a bold move to JOHOR BAHRU: The Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) has set a new cumulative investment target for Iskandar Malaysia of RM636 billion by 2030, after the initial target set during the inception of the economic region was surpassed successfully. Its chief executive, Datuk Dr Badrul Hisham Kassim, said since the establishment of Iskandar Malaysia in 2006 till September last year, the region had recorded total cumulative investments of RM409.5 billion, exceeding the initial target of RM383 billion that IRDA had aimed based on the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) 2006 to 2025. He said the RM383 billion target, which was recorded in February last year, was achieved almost three years ahead of the 19-year-long target, thus showing that Iskandar Malaysia and Malaysia’s offering of various competitive advantages, continue to attract investors’ interest and trust in the country. “This gives us the confidence to double our cumulative investment target by 2030 which we stamped in our latest CDPiii Iskandar Malaysia 2022-2030. “At the end of the next seven years, we are targeting to achieve RM636 billion in cumulative investments and we believe that this is possible, especially with the full support of the government through the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Special Financial Zone initiatives as announced by the government recently,” he said in a statement here, yesterday. Badrul Hisham said both the special economic and financial zones would play a big role in the future of Iskandar Malaysia. He said Iskandar Malaysia recorded committed investments of RM33.6 billion from January to September last year, with RM11 billion having been realised. “The main contributors are from the business services sector which includes investments in regional data centres amounting to RM22.4 billion and the manufacturing sector with RM7.7 billion,” he added. – Bernama Ringgit to rebound, with end-2024 target of RM4.20 to dollar: MIDF Research PETALING JAYA: Despite a challenging 2023, Malaysia’s ringgit is expected to rebound in 2024, with a year-end target of RM4.20 to the US dollar, according to MIDF Research. “With the expectations of narrowing interest rate differentials as the Fed is expected to start cutting the interest rate while BNM will keep the OPR at 3%, ringgit and other regional currencies will benefit from the reversal of fund flows, going back into emerging markets (EM),” the research firm stated in a statement. According to MIDF Research, the ringgit’s rally continued into the second month in December 2023. The Malaysian currency appreciated +1.5% month-on-month to RM4.594, gaining on the weakness of the US dollar. Looking at the monthly average, the ringgit registered another monthly appreciation of +0.6% to RM4.659. Meanwhile, the US dollar weakened against other major currencies for the second consecutive month in December. The DXY index declined by 2.1% monthon-month to close December at 101.33 (end-November 2023: 103.50). The greenback’s depreciation was underpinned by growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve will start cutting its policy interest rate in 2024. If demand conditions stay robust and the labour market remains tight, the dollar could gain from the higherfor-longer policy bias. Last year was a challenging one for the ringgit as the local currency even touched its lowest level since the Asian Financial Crisis, closing at RM4.794 on Oct 23, 2023. The depreciation in the ringgit was mainly due to external factors. One, the delayed pivot by the Federal Reserve which hiked rates further. Two, weaker-than-expected recovery in China’s economy also weighed on the ringgit’s performance. advance its interests by forging strategic partnerships with likeminded investors to propel the development of the highly anticipated SVTP project. “We are honoured to be the joint developer and play a role in the development of SVTP. This industrial park will be a game changer for Perak and is targeted to bring RM41 billion in GDP contributions and create 13,000 new jobs. With more foreign and domestic players setting up operations here, Perak will grow in importance as an industrial hub in the country,” he added. “We are optimistic that this collaboration with the state government of Perak will open doors into new markets for Advancecon and accelerate future growth for the group,” said Phum. The first two standards are IFRS S1 (General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information) and IFRS S2 (Climate-related Disclosures). At the recent 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), investors with more than US$120 trillion of assets under management voiced their support for the use of the ISSB Standards SC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek Hussin said, “The financial sector, particularly the capital market, must continue to facilitate financing and investments in support of the government’s key initiatives to address sustainabilityrelated issues including the impact of climate change on the economy.” The IFRS Trustees Foundation announced the formation of the ISSB at the 2021 UN COP26. The ISSB was established to develop a comprehensive global baseline for sustainability reporting that would meet the needs of investors and the financial markets. “To facilitate fundraising, the availability of reliable and comparable disclosure that is based on international standards is important. Equally important will be the exercise of proportionality in the use of these standards and for interoperability between global and domestic frameworks, to ease some of the challenges companies may face as they transition to the new standards,” said Awang Adek. The online public consultation is scheduled for six weeks. The public can provide views and feedback on critical considerations including implementation approach, timing and assurance of sustainability disclosures in Malaysia. ACSR chairman and SC managing director Datuk Kamarudin Hashim said, “While the immediate consideration is for the ISSB Standards to be applicable to listed issuers, we are cognisant that there is also demand for sustainability-related action and information on nonlisted issuers.” As such, he added, they strongly encourage all stakeholders, including preparers, investors, sustainability assurance providers, rating agencies and others to share their views, as this will help shape the national sustainability reporting framework. The survey on compensations, done by global advisory, broking and solutions company WTW, noted that although the projected salary increase this year was slightly lower than the 5.6% in 2023, the average salary increase continues to rise steadily in the last few years. More than 600 companies participated in the Malaysia Total Compensation Survey conducted in October 2023. Similar trends are observed across various industries in the country this year, WTW said in a statement. It added that inflationary pressures and concerns over a tight labour market continue to be influencing factors. “Although inflation is slowing down from the heights of recent years, Malaysia’s labour market is shifting,” said WTW head of work and rewards for Southeast Asia and Malaysia, Tan Juan Jim. Voluntary turnover and attrition reached a high of 18.5% in 2023 versus 16.5% in 2022 and the trend looks set to continue in 2024, he said. Tan added that employers in Malaysia will continue to face significant talent challenges including the attraction and retention of key talents. They will need to balance the entire rewards package, both monetary and nonmonetary, to remain competitive and aligned with employees’ needs and wants, he said. WTW survey discovered that millennials and Gen Z will form more than 70% of the workforce by 2025. Industries such as banking, insurance, tech, media and gaming, as well as shared services and outsourcing hired the most millennials and Gen Z last year. It noted that Gen Z workforce in Malaysia grew 50% year-on-year as a percentage of total workforce since 2020. It expects millennials and Gen Z to form more than 70% of the workforce by 2025. Tan said employees have options in the gig and passion economy, which is built around creators with a purpose and which provides alternative ways of making money. “Job security is no longer the primary focus, but understanding the emerging group of Gen Z employees becomes paramount. Organisations that provide greater work flexibility including a choice of remote, onsite or hybrid working will attract and retain more talent. “This trend of working offers Gen Z more options to have multiple side hustles while maintaining their traditional economy jobs,” he added. – Bernama NanoVerify to boost Asean presence via collaborations KUALA LUMPUR: NanoVerify Sdn Bhd (NVSB), a prominent contributor to nanotechnology advancement and a subsidiary of NanoMalaysia Bhd operating under Mosti, recently concluded the NanoVerify group signing ceremony 2023 together with its subsidiaries Konkordia Sdn Bhd (KSB) and Provekta Technologies Sdn Bhd (PTSB), to foster international partnerships aimed at establishing a strong presence in the Asean region. BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 16 /thesuntelegram FOLLOW ON TELEGRAM Malaysian Paper Asia wealth managers flocking to Dubai oThe Middle East is growing increasingly important to Beijing as Chinese entrepreneurs look to diversify into more markets SINGAPORE: A growing number of wealth managers in Asia are setting up offices in Dubai, capitalising on warming diplomatic ties between China and the Middle East and betting on a surge in demand from clients for geographical diversification. Dubai, a major financial hub in the Gulf region, is emerging as a preferred wealth hub for many entrepreneurs and rich families in Asia, mainly China, as they look to take advantage of favourable policies and expand their businesses, wealth managers said. Noah Holdings, one of China’s top wealth managers overseeing round US$23 billion (RM107 billion) in client assets, for example, is expecting to get a business licence in Dubai by the end of this year, said Qing Pan, its chief financial officer. The Dubai office will serve Chinese entrepreneurs who are setting up their businesses in that market, he said. “Noah’s strategy has been following the growth of clients’ wealth. That’s why we will have to be there and take care of the wealth generated locally,” Pan said, adding that the firm plans to send some staff from China first and recruit locally later. “Many Chinese entrepreneurs are looking for new markets and diversifying their supply chains, and many are excited by the opportunities offered by the Middle East.” The Middle East has grown increasingly important to Beijing as its ties with Washington have soured amid disagreements on a range of issues from trade and technology to human rights and Taiwan. A post-Covid economic rebound, neutral political stance, ease of doing business, convenient time zones, and tax free status have all contributed to the Middle East attracting droves of wealthy individuals in recent years. The UAE has in the recent past introduced incentives such as the ‘golden visa’ system. Dubai launched a ‘family wealth center’ last year to help wealthy individuals and businesses deal with cultural issues and governance. As a result, western wealth managers including Swiss private bank Lombard Odier are looking to expand their business presence in the region to tap into the influx of expatriates and growing population of rich individuals. In Asia, Hong Kong and Singapore have long been the most preferred offshore wealth hubs for rich individuals. But some clients are now looking to diversify into other markets and get exposure to new investment opportunities, said wealth managers. The global number of high net worth individuals (HNWI) fell 3.3% to 21.7 million in 2022, but the Middle East’s HNWI population increased 2.8% in the same year, according to Capgemini’s 2023 wealth report. The UAE saw the highest net inflow of millionaires in the world in 2022, and the private wealth hub was estimated to have received a net inflow of another 4,500 in 2023, according to data from Dubaibased wealth and immigration adviser Henley & Partners. Betting on the trend, Singaporebased multi-family office Farro Capital set up an office in Dubai last month. Patrick Tsang, chairman of Hong Kong-based single family office Tsang Group, said the firm was planning to launch new offices in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh this year after its Dubai foray in 2022. Hong Kong-based Landmark Family Office is also planning to set up an office in Dubai in the coming months. Landmark’s founder and CEO Cameron Harvey said the firm’s Dubai office would be used to help clients based in China, Southeast Asia, and Australia find investment opportunities in the Middle East. A recent survey of 76 Asia Pacific-based single and multifamily offices, done by Campden Wealth and Raffles Family Office, found average asset allocation to the Middle East region at only 1%, with 7% of the respondents planning to increase that. – Reuters LONDON: The latest blow for Boeing’s top-selling 737 MAX aircraft occurred on Friday when a cabin panel blowout forced an Alaska Airlines flight to make an emergency landing. US regulators have ordered a temporary grounding of certain planes for safety checks. That’s not as severe a move as the grounding of all MAX-family jets worldwide nearly five years ago following a pair of fatal crashes. About 215 B737 MAX 9 jets are in service worldwide, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. Only about 171 feature the plug door that was blown out during the flight. Other models include an extra emergency evacuation door. Here’s what regulators and airlines are doing as a result of the issue: REGULATORS: US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) The FAA issued a directive on Saturday temporarily grounding certain 737 MAX 9 airplanes until inspections are performed, affecting 171 airplanes. US National Transportation Safety Board The independent US agency has opened an investigation. Brazil Brazil’s aviation regulator ANAC said on Sunday the FAA ruling automatically applies to all flights in Brazil. In Brazil, only Copa Airlines operates the plane on international flights arriving and departing the Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo, it said. Canada Transport Canada on Sunday said there are no Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes in use by Canadian operators. China China’s regulator has sought details on the incident, a person familiar with the matter said on Saturday. Bloomberg reported earlier that China, the first country to ground MAX flights in 2019, was considering whether to take action. European Union The European Union Aviation Safety Agency adopted the FAA directive, but noted no EU member state airlines operate an aircraft with the affected configuration. India The aviation regulator on Saturday ordered domestic airlines to carry out a onetime inspection of the emergency exits on all Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft currently operating as part of their fleet. None of the country’s airlines have the 737-9 MAX model in their fleets. UK The UK Civil Aviation Authority said on Saturday there are no UK-registered planes affected. It will require any 737 MAX 9 operators entering its airspace to comply with the FAA directive. United Arab Emirates The civil aviation said on Sunday that none of its national carriers have planes affected by the order. AIRLINES: Alaska Airlines The airline grounded its entire 65 MAX 9 fleet early on Saturday, but later returned 18 to service following earlier maintenance checks on the FAA’s order. It reversed that later on Saturday and then pulled them from service again. On Sunday, it cancelled 163 flights, or 21% of scheduled departures, and said travel disruptions from the grounding are expected to last through at least midweek. United Airlines The only other US airline that operates the jets on Saturday said it temporarily suspended service on all 737 MAX 9 aircraft to run inspections required by the FAA. Earlier it had said that of its 79 MAX 9 airplanes, about 33 had already been inspected as required by the aviation regulator. United cancelled 230 flights on Sunday, or 8% of scheduled departures. COPA Airlines Panamanian carrier said on Saturday it had temporarily grounded 21 737 MAX 9 aircraft and said it “expects to return these aircraft safely and reliably to the flight schedule within the next 24 hours.” Some delays and cancellations are expected. As of end-September, the carrier had 26 B737 MAX 9 in its fleet, but operates them in two different configurations. Flydubai The airline said on Sunday that its three Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes were not affected. It operates the aircraft with a deactivated mid-aft exit door configuration, which is not affected by the directive. Turkish Airlines It said on Sunday it has withdrawn its five aircraft from service for inspection. The planes will be grounded at the first airport they land at. – Reuters China’s Evergrande says head of EV arm detained About 215 Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets are in service worldwide but only about 171 feature the plug door that was blown out during the flight. – AFPPIX BEIJING: The head of heavily indebted Chinese property developer Evergrande’s electric vehicle (EV) unit has been detained, the firm said yesterday, the second executive from the company to come under investigation in recent months. Once China’s biggest real estate developer, Evergrande has reported more than US$300 billion (RM1.4 trillion) in liabilities and its troubles have become a symbol of the nation’s years-long property crisis. The firm’s electric vehicle arm NEV said yesterday that Liu Yongzhuo – listed on its website as its president – had “been detained in accordance with the law on suspicion of illegal crimes”. It did not give further details on why exactly Liu had been held. Liu’s detention follows Evergrande’s announcement in September that chairman Xu Jiayin was “subject to mandatory measures” from Chinese authorities over “crimes”. Liu, born in 1981, has also served as chairman of the board of an Evergrandeowned football team based in the southern city of Guangzhou. At the time of its establishment in 2019, Evergrande NEV said it aimed to become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric cars in just “three to five years”. But the EV unit’s cash flow and growth outlook were hit hard by its parent company’s increasingly dire financial situation. Evergrande NEV indicated in March 2023 that it was fighting to secure liquidity in order to stay afloat. – AFP What airlines, regulators are doing about 737 MAX jets Honda mulls plan for electric vehicle plant in Canada MONTREAL: Japanese automaker Honda is considering building its next electric vehicle (EV) factory in Canada in a multibillion-dollar project that might include producing its own batteries by 2028, according to a report Sunday. Estimated to cost ¥2 trillion (RM65 billion), the project would represent one of the multinational firm’s biggest investments ever, according to Japan’s Nikkei news group. Honda said in response to an AFP query that it is “considering a number of initiatives as we move into the electrified era” but had nothing else to say for now. Without confirming the Nikkei report, Canadian industry minister FrancoisPhilippe Champagne told Canada’s Global News that it reflected the country’s growing reputation as a leader in attracting green investment in the auto industry. Honda is studying several sites, notably next to one of its factories in Ontario province, Nikkei said. It said the Japanese company is expected to make a decision sometime this year that would allow production to begin in 2028. In recent years Canada has actively worked to attract manufacturers in the electric vehicle sector, offering tax breaks and boasting its plentiful renewable energy sources and supplies of rare minerals used in EV batteries. The Canadian strategy follows the example set by the country’s leading trading partner, the US, whose Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 aims to provide billions of dollars in subsidies for green industries. – AFP
BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 17 BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said yesterday the central bank should consider cutting interest rates as inflation was very low, and planned to speak to its governor to urge him to reconsider its policy stance. Srettha, a real estate mogul and political newcomer, said he was clear in his opposition to rate increases by the Bank of Thailand (BOT), but reiterated its Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput had the power to continue that approach. “We’ve talked all the time. On raising interest rates, I have a clear stance that I don’t agree with, but he has the power to increase it,” Srettha told reporters. Inflation was very low, “therefore, there may be a need to consider reducing interest rates,” he said. The central bank left its policy rate unchanged at a decade high of 2.50% in November after raising it by 200 basis points since August 2022 to curb inflation. It will next review policy on Feb 7. Headline inflation came in at -0.83% last month, making it the eighth straight month that it was outside the central bank’s target of 1% to 3%. Late on Sunday on X social media, Srettha said rate hikes had not been good at all for the economy, urging the BOT to avoid moves that would adversely impact low-income families and small businesses. His government is seeking to spur growth in Southeast Asia’s second biggest economy largely though stimulus and consumer spending, with Thailand trailing regional peers with growth forecast at 2.4% last year, short of the 2022 figure. “The Bank of Thailand has raised interest rates despite negative inflation for many consecutive months, which is not good for the economy at all and also has an impact on people with low incomes and SMEs,” Srettha said. The premier said he hoped the central bank would “help take care of the people by not raising rates in the opposite direction of inflation”. – Reuters Japan calls for early signing of Sri Lanka debt MoU TOKYO: Japan restated the importance for early completion of signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sri Lanka and creditor nations on debt restructuring, after an agreement was reached in principle late last year. It also emphasised the need to ensure transparency and comparability in agreements with creditors outside the Official Creditor Committee (OCC), according to a statement dated Jan 5. Japan, along with France and India, co-chair the committee of 15 creditor nations. Battling its worst financial crisis since independence in 1948, the South Asian island nation is trying to restructure deals with creditors after soaring inflation, currency depreciation and low foreign reserves sent its economy into free fall, forcing it to default on foreign debt in May 2022. Sri Lanka and its creditors said in November they reached an agreement in principle on debt restructuring that would cover approximately US$5.9 billion (RM27 billion) of outstanding public debt and consisted of a mix of long-term maturity extension and reduction in interest rates. China, Sri Lanka’s largest bilateral creditor, has struck its own deal with the island nation, but has not joined OCC as a formal member. Sri Lanka’s total external debt is estimated at US$36.4 billion, which includes US$10.81 billion of bilateral debt, according to data released by its Finance Ministry in September. Sri Lanka needs to secure debt restructuring agreements with both bilateral creditors and bondholders, possibly by March, to complete the second review of a US$2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund. – Reuters Cut rates, Thai central bank urged oPM says inflation very low, small businesses hurting China lifts stock net-selling ban for mutual funds SHANGHAI: China’s securities regulator is allowing mutual fund managers to sell more shares than they buy each day, three sources said, removing a ban introduced late last year aimed at propping up a flagging stock market. The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) late last year barred major mutual fund companies from selling shares on a net basis on any day, answering top leadership calls to stabilise a market that was among the world’s worst performers. CSRC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. One source directly aware of the change suspected the policy shift was partly due to growing redemption pressures on funds. “If you net sold stocks at the end of last year, you would get calls from regulators,” the source said, adding he received no such calls this year. “It is understandable as if you cannot net sell stocks, you don’t have the money to repay redeeming investors.” Such so-called window guidance – or unofficial, verbal advice from regulators – has disappeared in recent days, two sources with direct knowledge of the issue said. “The net selling restriction here has been removed. We can now net sell stocks,” said one of the people. China’s blue-chip CSI300 Index slumped 11% last year amid a faltering post-Covid economic recovery, a deepening property crisis and geopolitical tensions. The CSI300 index was one of the world’s worst-performing markets last year, despite a slew of government support measures that included a cut in stamp duty on trading, restrictions on share sales by listed companies and a slow down in the pace of listings. In its latest market-supportive measure, the CSRC informally asked some of China’s biggest mutual fund managers to prioritise the launch of equity-based funds over funds based on other types of securities. Reflecting heavier selling pressure, China’s blue-chip index fell to its lowest level in nearly five years yesterday, which traders say reflects a lack of confidence in the strength of the domestic economy and increasing tensions with the United States and its allies. – Reuters A worker producing lanterns at a factory in the northeastern China city of Yantai yesterday. – AFPPIC Geely’s Zeekr aims to double EV deliveries SHANGHAI: Zeekr is aiming to deliver 230,000 cars this year, double its deliveries in 2023, a company spokesman said yesterday, as the electric car brand of China’s Geely ramps up sales of new models and expand into overseas markets. Zeekr started delivery of its fourth model, the Zeekr 007 sedan, last month and wants to increase sales in Europe while selling into more markets in the Middle East and Asia this year, the company said. The three-year-old company sold 118,685 cars last year, increasing 65% from 2022, the company said previously. However, it missed its previous target of selling 140,000 units last year, when more than 40 brands were involved in a bruising price war in China, the world’s largest auto market. – Reuters Shell flags writedown of up to US$4.5b, mainly on S’pore assets SINGAPORE: Shell yesterday flagged impairment charges of US$2.5 billion to US$4.5 billion (RM11.6 billion to RM20.9 billion) for the fourth quarter, mainly related to the Singapore refining and chemicals hub the oil major is looking to sell. The assets include a 237,000 barrels per day refinery and a one million metric tonne per year ethylene plant on Singapore’s Bukom and Jurong islands, for which it had announced a strategic review last year. Ahead of fourth-quarter results announcement on Feb 1, the company also said gas trading would be significantly higher than the previous three-month period, while upstream production would come in at 1,830 to 1,930 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day. Its chemicals and products division is expected to post an adjusted earnings loss for the period, it added. – Reuters
BIZ & FINANCE BIZ & FINANCE TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 18 Oil tumbles 1% after Saudi Arabia slashes prices cut the February official selling price (OSP) of its flagship Arab Light crude to Asia to the lowest level in 27 months. “If we were just to focus on the fundamentals including, higher inventories, higher Opec/non-Opec production, and a lower-than-expected Saudi OSP, it would be impossible to be anything other than bearish crude oil,” said IG analyst Tony Sycamore. “However, that doesn’t take into account the fact that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are undeniably rising again which will mean limited downside.” Both contracts climbed more than 2% in the first week of this year after investors returned from holidays to focus on geopolitical risk in the Middle East following attacks by Yemeni Houthis on ships in the Red Sea. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is in the Middle East this week, said the Gaza conflict could spread across the region unless there is concerted peace effort. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue the war until Hamas was eliminated. Offsetting upward pressure on prices from geopolitical concern, output from Opec rose 70,000 barrels per day (bpd) last month to 27.88 million bpd, a Reuters survey showed. “The Red Sea tensions are the only counterweight, albeit a relatively weak and intermittent one, to crude prices succumbing to bearishness over expectations of softening global demand and rising inventories,” said Hari. Separately in the US, oil drilling rigs were up by one at 501 last week, Baker Hughes said in its weekly report. – Reuters Farmers using tractors to block access to a highway in Birkenwerder municipality yesterday. – REUTERSPIC oConcerns over weak demand offset Mideast tensions US Congress leaders reach spending deal WASHINGTON: The top Democrat and Republican in the US Congress on Sunday agreed on a US$1.59 trillion (RM7.4 trillion) spending deal, setting up a race for bitterly divided lawmakers to pass the bills that would appropriate the money before the government begins to shut down this month. Since early last year, House of Representatives and Senate appropriations committees had been unable to agree on the 12 annual bills needed to fund the government for the fiscal year that began Oct 1 because of disagreements over the total amount of money to be spent. When lawmakers return this week from a holiday break, those panels will launch intensive negotiations over how much various agencies, from the Agriculture and Transportation Departments to Homeland Security and Health and Human Services, get to spend in the fiscal year that runs through Sept 30. They face a Jan 19 deadline for the first set of bills to move through Congress and a Feb 2 deadline for the remainder of them. There were already some disagreements between the two parties as to what they had agreed to. Republican House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson said the top-line figure includes US$886 billion for defence and US$704 billion for non-defence spending. But Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the non-defence spending figure will be US$772.7 billion. Last month, Congress authorised US$886 billion for the Department of Defence this fiscal year which Democratic President Joe Biden signed into law. Appropriators will also now fill in the details on how that will be parcelled out. The non-defence discretionary funding will “protect key domestic priorities like veterans benefits, healthcare and nutrition assistance” from cuts sought by some Republicans, Schumer and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a joint statement. Last spring, Biden and then-House speaker Kevin McCarthy reached a deal on the US$1.59 trillion in fiscal 2024 spending, along with an increase in borrowing authority to avoid a historic US debt default. But immediately after that was enacted, a fight broke out over a separate, private agreement by the two men over additional non-defence spending of US$69 billion. The agreement on a top line spending number could amount to little more than a false dawn, if hardline Republicans make good on threats to block spending legislation unless Democrats agree to restrict the flow of migrants across the US-Mexico border. Unless both chambers of Congress succeed in passing the 12 bills needed to fully fund the government, money will expire on Jan 19 for federal programmes involving transportation, housing, agriculture, energy, veterans and military construction. Funding for other government areas will continue through Feb 2. – Reuters German farmers block roads, highway ramps to protest subsidy cuts BERLIN: German farmers started a week of nationwide protests yesterday in response to plans to phase out agricultural subsidies as the coalition government scrambles to fix its finances. Images showed convoys of tractors and trucks, some adorned with protest banners, on German roads in sub-zero pre-dawn temperatures. Police reports said roads and highway ramps were blocked in multiple locations, causing traffic jams during the morning rush hour. Farmers have vowed to blockade major traffic and logistics routes through next week as they warn that an end to tax breaks will drive farms out of business. The head of German farmers’ association DBV asked the public for sympathy in an interview published yesterday. “We do not want to lose the support and solidarity we have received from large parts of the population,” he told Stern magazine, but said the farmers “will not accept the planned tax hikes for the agricultural sector”. A backlash from farmers last week prompted Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition, racing to finalise a 2024 budget draft that was delayed by a court ruling, to make unexpected changes, including modifying plans to cut subsidies for agriculture. Rather than abruptly ending the farmers’ tax break on agricultural diesel, the subsidy will be reduced by 40% this year, by 30% in 2025 and will end from 2026. The government also dropped plans to abolish the preferential treatment in vehicle tax for forestry and agriculture. However, the DBV said the changes were not enough and stuck with plans for protests this week. – Reuters Australian shares at three-week lows as investors await inflation data CANBERRA: Australian shares closed at a three-week low yesterday, with financial and mining stocks being the worst losers, as risk-averse investors prepared for inflation figures in local and US markets later this week. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index closed 0.5% lower at 7,451.50, its lowest level since Dec 19 and marking its fourth consecutive session of loss. “There is an air of anxiety on Australian markets this week ahead of the November CPI (consumer price index) print which is due on Wednesday,” said KCM Trade chief market analyst Tim Waterer. Australia’s November retail sales figures are due today, with analysts expecting the data will have picked up from a 0.2% monthly drop in October, owing to seasonal factors. “Overall, traders are hoping that the key data releases this week are not so strong as to bring a potential hike from the RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) back into the picture at some point.” Markets are also keeping a close eye on the US inflation data due later this week, with any upside beats likely to weigh on interest rate cut expectations. On the domestic bourse, financial stocks slipped 0.4%, led by a 0.9% decline in Commonwealth Bank of Australia . Mining stocks declined 0.9% to a three-week low, as iron ore prices slumped. Rio Tinto slumped 0.6%, ahead of kicking off Australia’s first production season of 2024 on Jan 15. Technology stocks fell 0.8% to their lowest level in four weeks, in tandem with a weaker close in the Wall Street. At 5 pm, the FBM KLCI increased 0.54 per cent or 8.09 points to 1,495.70 from last Friday’s close of 1,487.61. The benchmark index opened 0.99 points better at 1,488.60, its intraday low, and moved in an upward trajectory to its intraday high of 1,498.52 in mid-afternoon before retreating towards closing. On the broader market, gainers beat losers 494 to 448, while 583 counters were unchanged, 695 untraded, and 19 others suspended. Turnover surged to 6.96 billion units worth RM4.21 billion from 6.62 billion units worth RM3.72 billion last Friday. Rakuten Trade equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the FBM KLC ended in the positive territory, thanks to strong foreign buying. Meanwhile, he said key regional indices closed mixed, with heavy selling in Hong Kong and China, as tensions in the United States-China trade war intensified. “The imposition of sanctions by both parties on several companies added to the market volatility and has impacted market sentiment. “Investors are eagerly awaiting Friday’s inflation data from China, as it is expected to serve as a key indicator for gauging the central bank’s policy outlook,” he told Bernama. He said Rakuten Trade’s positive outlook on the local market is driven by appealing valuations, an upswing in investor confidence and strong foreign buying. — Bernama 1,495.70pts Jan 8, 2024 Participation 28.1 46.4 25.5 100.0 Retail Institutions Foreign Bought RM m 1145.6 1980.1 1086.9 4212.6 Sold RM m 1224.0 1931.5 1057.1 4212.6 Net RM m -78.4 48.6 29.8 0.0 % Preliminary stats (excluding trade amendments). GENTING Malaysia Bhd ought to have better luck this year as Resorts World Genting visitor arrivals are expected to recover to pre-Covid levels of 24 million in FY24E (FY23E: 21 million). While Malaysian and Singaporean visitations of circa.85% of total visitation pre-Covid have recovered to pre-Covid levels, Indonesian (circa 10% during pre-Covid) and Chinese visitations (circa 4% during pre-Covid) have yet to recover. Maybank Investment Bank is hopeful that air connectivity from Indonesia and China markets will be fully restored this year. “This will drive its FY24E earnings to recover 60% year-on-year (y-o-y). This ought to enable Genting Malaysia to pay a DPS of 15 sen per annum which offers decent dividend yields of ≥5.4% per annum,” it said. The research house maintains a BUY call with a higher RM2.93 discounted cash flow-target price (DCF-TP) (+9%). A potentially positive catalyst this year would be Resorts World New York City Casino (RWNYC) securing a downstate commercial casino licence, which could add RM0.56 to its TP. Hopefully, the results of RWNYC’s bid for a downstate commercial casino licence will be known before year-end. “Should RWNYC be successful, we expect this to spur foreign interest in the company’s shares. Our earnings estimates and DCFTP could be raised by a whopping circa RM625 million and RM0.56 (assuming a RM4.40:US$1.00 exchange rate), respectively, should RWNYC win a downstate commercial casino licence.” “We maintain our earnings estimates but roll forward our valuation base year to end-FY24E from end-FY23E. (Jan 8, 2024) IN a surprise turn, SP Setia Bhd (SP Setia) has announced that the proposed land disposal to the Scientex JV has been aborted again due to non-fulfilment of conditions precedent within the extended completion period. To recap, the 960-acre land sale to Scientex Bhd was first mooted back in 2021 for RM518.15 million but was called off after it failed to obtain a waiver of the Bumiputera equity condition imposed by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU). SP Setia and Scientex then revisited the deal in July 2023 with a new JV structure to satisfy the condition set by EPU and a higher price tag of RM547.65 million. At this juncture, not much is known about the latest rejection by EPU. The land was earmarked earlier to be developed as Taman Pelangi Indah II with an estimated gross development value (GDV) of about RM8 billion. PublicInvest Research said that the deal was estimated to increase the group’s net assets by RM320.3 million and its cash position by RM441.4 million. The group plans to offload more non-core assets and monetise these assets with an estimated value of RM5 billion via REIT listing or outright disposal. “We are disappointed, as the land deal, we believe, could have helped bump the group’s earnings while rightsizing its huge land bank and lightening its debt burden. We cut our FY24 earnings by 46% with the latest development.” “We turn more cautious and downgrade SP Setia from OUTPERFORM to NEUTRAL, with a target price (TP) of RM1.00 from RM1.20 on a higher discount of circa 65% from circa 60% previously vis-à-vis the sector average of ~0.5x to net tangible asset (NTA). — (Jan 8, 2024) SPRITZER Bhd (Spritzer) has launched its new beverage, Sparkling Lemon water, to attract new customers and align with the market trend of flavoured beverages among teenagers. The group also plans to introduce two to three new beverages in 2024 to enhance their market leadership position. Spritzer’s plant utilisation rate is currently at 75%, an improvement from 70% in the third quarter of financial year 2023 (Q3’23). It has allocated RM36 million in capital expenditure (capex) for two additional production lines in its plants. AmInvest Research maintains BUY on Spritzer with an unchanged fair value of RM2.27, based on an unchanged FY24F PE of 14x, at parity to its seven-year mean. “We have factored in the increase of 15-20% earnings contribution from the new production lines in our FY24F-FY25F net profit forecast,” it said in its note. The stock currently trades at an attractive FY24F price-toearnings (PE) of 12x versus its five-year peak of 16x while offering a decent dividend yield of 4%. The research house is positive on Spritzer’s prospects on the back of: (i) an increase in average selling price (ASP) of 5-10% in FY23 with a stable increase of 10% in volume; (ii) a stable net margin of 7-8% annually; (iii) lower raw material costs; (iv) robust domestic travel; and (v) the continuous arrival of international tourists. It also keeps its neutral ESG rating of 3-star for the company. At 6pm, the ringgit climbed to 4.6495/6535 versus the greenback from Friday’s close of 4.6525/6580. MIDF Research said the ringgit and other regional currencies would benefit from the weakening US dollar moving forward, with more funds flowing back into emerging markets. A recovery in regional trade, underpinned by sustained growth in China’s economy and recovering global manufacturing activities would further lift sentiment. “Following the recent rally in US Treasuries, we foresee that the dollar weakening will continue as safe-haven demand subsides, along with growing investor appetite for riskier assets. “Nevertheless, the upside bias for the dollar remains as the risk of a possible recession in the United States and rising geopolitical tensions could result in increased risk aversion, which is supportive of the US dollar,” it said in a note yesterday. The research firm said interest rate cuts may be delayed by the continued resilience of the US economy if demand conditions stay robust and the American labour market remains tight, with the dollar gaining from a higher-for-longer policy bias. At the close, the ringgit was traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It declined vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.9025/9076 from 5.8891/8961 on Friday, weakened versus the euro to 5.0852/0895 from 5.0763/0823 last week, and depreciated against the Japanese yen to 3.2234/2264 from 3.2038/2078 previously. The ringgit was traded higher against Asean currencies. — Bernama Sunway offers cheaper entry to healthcare unit listing: RHB KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Investment Research has recommended that investors buy into Sunway Bhd in view of the coming listing of Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG). Under the shareholders’ agreement with Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, GIC Pte Ltd, the IPO for SHG has to be completed by October 2027. “We expect the listing to happen sooner. We advise investors to start positioning as Sunway would offer a cheaper entry to the listing of SHG,” it said in its note today. Similar to the listing of Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SCGB MK, BUY, TP: RM2.22) eight years ago, it said investors are expected to be rewarded via this value-unlocking exercise. It said investors who have been following Sunway would remember how the group was re-rated before the listing of SCGB in 2014-2015, and how they were rewarded by the demerger. Recall that during the listing of SCGB, Sunway’s shareholders were entitled to a 1-for-10 distribution in specie of free SCGB shares, and post-listing, shareholders also received a 26 sen special dividend. The research house has kept a BUY on SHG, and raised the target price for Sunway to RM3.00 from RM2.65, 35% upside and circa 3% yield. Upon the potential listing in FY25F-26F, SHG may have a market capitalisation of RM10-12 billion. Sunway, which has an 84% stake in SHG, has market capitalisation of only RM12 billion. SHG’s EBITDA has also been revised upward by 90%, on the performance of newer hospitals, was better than expected. Travel insurance addresses this concern by offering reimbursements for losses incurred. However, it is crucial to ascertain the coverage of items under warranty and company policies to avoid unexpected financial burdens. This all-encompassing coverage safeguards against a myriad of risks, including accidents and unforeseen EMBARKING on a journey of exploration is an exhilarating endeavour, but amid the excitement, uncertainties linger. Travel insurance emerges as a pivotal shield, offering protection against the myriad costs and risks inherent in the realm of travel. Whether one embarks on a local escapade or ventures into international territories, the umbrella of travel insurance proves indispensable. Available through various ticket vendors and vacation package providers, travel insurance, also known as traveller insurance, extends its protective embrace to give you complete peace of mind. A lifeline in medical emergencies Within the spectrum of travel insurance lies a critical safety net for medical emergencies during your journey. Irrespective of the form of medical or accident care required, the coverage extends up to a predefined limit. This encompasses medical treatments, emergency medical transportation to the nearest suitable healthcare facility and the expenses incurred in returning home after a covered injury or illness. Emergency medical transportation benefits carve out a crucial niche in ensuring swift and efficient responses to unforeseen health crises. Navigating personal setbacks Imagine planning an extensive European tour with your family, only to face an unexpected hurdle. Your child falls ill and is diagnosed with Covid-19, rendering him or her ineligible to board the flight. The travel agency, adhering to its policy, denies refunds for cancellations within 14 days of departure. Here, the significance of travel insurance shines brightly. Travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage becomes a financial lifeline, enabling reimbursement for trip costs. It is imperative to note that coverage is contingent on specific reasons, such as a terrorist incident at your destination, the need to attend a family birth or natural calamities rendering your home or destination uninhabitable. These conditions define the parameters within which the protective cloak of travel insurance covers. Safeguarding against accidental death and flight accidents In the unfortunate event of death or serious injury caused by an accident during travel, travel insurance steps in to financially compensate the policyholder’s family. While those with existing life insurance may question the necessity of accidental death coverage, the supplementary benefits provided by travel insurance offer an additional layer of financial support. This coverage, however, applies exclusively to accidents occurring during air travel, with defined limits on compensation. Navigating challenges with round-the-clock support. Crafting unforgettable journeys ourneys oTravellers code of do’s and don’ts for global adventures Conduct thorough research on your destination. – PICS BY PEXELS Passport security TRAVELLING can be a thrilling experience, but it also comes with the responsibility of ensuring that your passport is kept secure until you return home. Beyond being essential for travelling to new locations, passports are vital documents that contain personal information. To ensure a worry-free journey, here is a list of seven important guidelines that will help you safeguard your passport while you are away from home. Invest in a passport holder A passport holder is not only a fashionable accessory - it is also an investment in the security of your passport that is both functional as well as practical. The majority of the time, these holders come pre-fitted with RFID-blocking technology, which can prevent your passport from being stolen electronically. Choose a holder that is not only longlasting but also well-designed, one that complements your style and offers an additional layer of protection. Make and carry copies Before embarking on your journey, make photocopies or digital scans of your passport’s main identification page and any visas you may have. Store these copies separately from your actual passport, either in a different bag or with a trusted companion. In the unfortunate event of losing your passport, having copies can speed up the replacement process at the local embassy. Share copies with a trusted contact Give a set of copies to a trusted friend or family member back home. In the event of a crisis, they can provide the necessary information to the authorities or the embassy to assist you. Ensure that the person you intend to contact is aware of your travel itinerary as well as the best way to get in touch with you in the event of an emergency. Utilise a money belt or hidden pouch When exploring unfamiliar places, consider using a money belt or hidden pouch to keep your passport and other valuables secure. As a result of wearing these items underneath your clothing, you will have an additional layer of protection against pickpockets. This will ensure that your important documents are always close to you. Be mindful of your bag Be sure to keep a close eye on your bag, particularly in areas that are crowded. Make use of a bag that has zippers and compartments that are secure and store your passport in a pocket on the inside of the bag. Buble expressed how Noah’s diagnosis was a seismic event that shattered the illusions he held about life. “My son’s cancer diagnosis rocked my world,” he revealed. “It pulled the curtain from over my eyes and that was a sledgehammer to my reality.” He acknowledged that the experience has left an indelible mark, changing his perspective on life and its inherent challenges. The Grammy-winning artist emphasised that the pain, fear and suffering associated with such circumstances are part of life’s intricate tapestry. Both the batters have not played T20 Internationals since India’s defeat to England in the semifinals of the World Cup in Australia in November 2022. While they have been active in other formats, speculation was rife whether they would play the T20 World Cup in West Indies and the United States in June. Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul missed out though the Indian cricket board did not offer any explanation for any of the omissions or inclusions in its statement on Sunday. Pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested, ostensibly to keep them fresh ahead of the five-Test home series against England beginning later this month. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, including missing 11 majors through a series of knee, feet, ankle, abdomen and wrist problems. Here’s a look at Nadal’s history of pain: 2003: Elbow Two years after his professional debut, Nadal experienced his first physical problems which forced him to withdraw from the French Open after picking up an elbow injury in training. 2004: Left foot Just 18, Nadal misses the French Open and Wimbledon due to a broken bone in his foot. 2009: Knee In June, Nadal suffers tendinitis in his knees, depriving him of the opportunity to defend the Wimbledon title he had won 12 months earlier in an epic final against Roger Federer. In September, Nadal is knocked out of the US Open semifinals admitting to playing with an abdominal tear. 2012: Knee Tendonitis in his left knee forces Nadal out of the Olympics where he was the defending champion. The Spanish star also sits out the US Open. 2014: Back Despite a back problem, Nadal battles to the Australian Open final in January where he loses to Stan Wawrinka. In July, a right wrist injury forces him to miss the US Open. 2016: Wrist A left wrist injury forces Nadal to withdraw from the French Open, where he is already a nine-time champion, before the third round. 2021: Foot In August, Nadal ends his season early due to yet more left foot problems. He has surgery in September. 2022: Rib/Foot/Abdomen Having defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals at Indian Wells, Nadal loses in the final to Taylor Fritz. He then misses several tournaments including the Monte Carlo Masters due to a cracked rib. In May and June, Nadal endures searing pain in his left foot. After wrapping up a 14th French Open title – and 22nd Grand Slam crown – he reveals that he has to take “anesthetic injections before each match” to put his foot to sleep which allows him to play. Weeks later, Nadal has to forfeit an eagerly-anticipated Wimbledon semifinal against Nick Kyrgios after suffering an abdomen tear in a gruelling last-eight clash with Fritz. 2023: Hip In January, Nadal loses in the Australian Open second round and explains that he is suffering from a hip injury and calls time on his season before undergoing surgery. 2024: Thigh After almost a year on the sidelines, Nadal returns to action in Brisbane, reaching the last-eight where he loses to Jordan Thompson. He feels a pain in his left thigh and an MRI scan reveals “a micro muscle tear”. He withdraws from the Australian Open and returns to Spain to consult his medical team. – AFP Fowler has ‘zero plans to go anywhere’ RICKIE FOWLER promised his fans “don’t have to worry” about him leaving the PGA Tour behind in favour of LIV Golf in an interview with Golfweek on Sunday. Fowler was the subject of speculation after his longtime sponsors, Farmers Insurance and Rocket Mortgage, disappeared from his hat and shirt during last week’s PGA Tour season opener, The Sentry. Fowler told Golfweek it was not a sign that he was about to take LIV money. “Seeing how much work the guys on the (PGA Tour) board, especially being around (Patrick) Cantlay during the offseason a little bit and leading up to this event, I’ve never seen a person be on the phone so much,” Fowler said. “These guys are pouring a lot of time and effort into it. I was on the PAC last year but have tried to stay out of the way because the guys that are in there, I trust. “With Jordan (Spieth), Cantlay, Tiger (Woods) and the other guys, I’ve just trusted that we’re all going to end up in a good spot and I have zero plans to go anywhere.” Despite the PGA Tour’s ongoing negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – the financial backers of LIV Golf – the sport’s turf wars have not died down. They were reignited, in fact, when Spanish star Jon Rahm signed with LIV last month. Since then, the likes of Cantlay, Tony Finau and Swedish up-and-comer Ludvig Aberg reiterated their commitments to the PGA Tour. “I guess it’s the day and age we live in. There’s only so much you can believe or trust because anything can be put out there,” Fowler said of LIV rumours online. “I’m real excited for what’s coming for me and for the tour and all the time and effort these guys have been putting into it.” So why did he not wear sponsors on his clothing this week? Farmers told him they did not wish to renew, but there’s a renewal in the works with Rocket Mortgage, yet to be finalised. – Field Level Media CHRIS KIRK birdied the 15th and 17th holes to polish off an 8-under 65 and kick off the PGA Tour season with a win yesterday at The Sentry in Maui, Hawaii. Kirk was the 54-hole leader at the Plantation Course at Kapalua and expanded his advantage yesterday with six birdies in his first 11 holes. After Sahith Theegala made a charge on the back nine, Kirk dialed in his second shot at the par-4 17th to 2 feet. The ensuing birdie let him finish at 29-under 263, one stroke ahead of Theegala. Kirk made just one bogey the entire week in order to claim US$3.6 million (RM16.5m) of the US$20m (RM92m) purse at the first signature event of 2024. Kirk nearly hit a 7-iron at No. 17 before changing his mind due to shifting winds and choosing his 5- iron. “I’m very proud, very, very proud of that shot, that I was able to make t h e right call and that’s – talk about a t o u g h shot to commit to,” Kirk said. “When you’re about to pull 7 and you end up hitting 5, that doesn’t happen ever.” Kirk won the Honda Classic in February 2023 to end an eight-year drought between PGA Tour victories. He took a leave of absence in 2019 to address mental health and addiction issues. Now he has his second win in 11 months. “It’s a 100% the reason why I’m able to do what I do,” Kirk said. “I’ve said that a lot, but there would be – my PGA Tour career would have been over a while ago, had I not gotten sober.” Theegala rang up 10 birdies and eight pars for a 63 yesterday but had to settle for second. “Last year I was hurt during the offseason, didn’t play any golf,” Theegala said. “This year I got a lot of work in, in the gym, a lot of work in with my coach and felt so ready for this event. “Finishing second here is going to be a really nice boost for the rest of the West Coast swing.” Jordan Spieth got finished in third place with Byeong Hun An of South Korea in fourth. – Field Level Media German beat Poland Kirk kicks off new year in style to lift United Cup GERMANY beat top seeds Poland to clinch the United Cup on Sunday after Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund won the deciding mixed doubles tie over Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek. With the score tied at 1-1 after Swiatek and Zverev won their respective singles matches, the German duo won the doubles match 6-4, 5-7, 10-4. Germany had a poor group stage and just about qualified for the knockouts, but Zverev and Siegemund formed a formidable pair to rescue their side by winning three deciders to lead their team to the title. “It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s been a pleasure and it’s been absolutely so much fun for everybody to be part of this team, especially for me,” Zverev said. Poland did not go home empty handed, with Swiatek picking up the Most Valuable Player award having won all her singles ties as well as the mixed doubles matches before the final. “It was really tight. Last year we made it to the semifinals and this year to the finals. So hopefully the next step is going to be winning (the trophy),” Swiatek said. – Reuters Rafael Nadal. – REUTERSPIX
SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | JAN 9, 2024 29 DAVID MOYES saw his injury worries mount up as West Ham were held to a 1-1 FA Cup draw yesterday by Bristol City. Lucas Paqueta set up Jarrod Bowen’s goal after just four minutes, but limped off shortly after with a recurrence of a knee injury. Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was also forced off with a shoulder problem before halftime. But most worryingly of all, top-scorer Bowen had to be helped from the pitch after the final whistle having gone down injured in stoppage time. The injuries may have brought into question Moyes’ decision to play his strongest team against the Championship side. But the Hammers boss insisted: “I had no intention of doing anything else than making sure we put out as strong a team as we possibly could. “Injuries are part of football, and unfortunately we picked up a couple today. Losing Lucas was a big turning point in the match.” The Hammers looked on course for a comfortable afternoon when Bowen brought down Paqueta’s ball over the top and fired them into an early lead. It proved to be anything but, however, after a second-half equaliser from Tommy Conway secured a replay for the rocking Robins. A replay is the last thing Moyes needs as the injuries begin to bite, but he claimed: “I’m looking forward to going back to Bristol, I’ve not been there for a long time. “The amount of games we played this season it would be better if we didn’t have it, but if I was Bristol City I’d be thrilled to have West Ham at Ashton Gate.” City boss Liam Manning, a former Hammers U-23s coach, was delighted with his side’s second half display. “The immediate emotion would be pride in terms of the performance level,” he said. “Going a goal down early can derail you but the response was outstanding. “For the first 20 or 25 minutes of the second half the performance level was excellent, and the goal was a terrific moment of quality.” – The Independent ‘Kevin is exceptional’ Pep welcomes return of De Bruyne in City’s FA Cup romp PEP GUARDIOLA hailed Kevin De Bruyne as exceptional and unique after his impressive return to action in Manchester City’s FA Cup stroll against Huddersfield. The Belgian playmaker appeared as a 57th-minute substitute and set up a goal as the holders breezed past the C h a m p i o n s h i p strugglers 5-0 in a one-sided thirdround tie at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. It was De Bruyne’s first outing in five months after a long lay-off following hamstring surgery and his comeback is timely as City step up the intensity for the second half of the campaign. City manager Guardiola said: “He played really good minutes. We thought it was better to play the second half than from the beginning when the game was tighter. “It was so difficult to find space. They defended so so deep and were really well organised, compact. “It was really good and now, as I said before, he needs to accumulate training sessions and more training sessions, more than games. Still he is not ready for 90 minutes. “Kevin helps to win games and there are few (like him) in the world. We can play good football-wise but Kevin, (Erling) Haaland, Phil (Foden), Julian (Alvarez) – these guys win games. “That’s why it’s so important to have him back. Kevin is exceptional, he is unique. “He was a long time out with surgery. His first minutes, the quality of the assist for the Jeremy (Doku) goal – it’s really good to have him back.” De Bruyne put the seal on City’s performance by teeing up City’s fifth goal for Doku, who was also making his return from injury. Foden had already struck twice with Alvarez also on target and City benefiting from a Ben Jackson own goal. Haaland was again absent through injury but, with a lighter schedule this month, Guardiola is hoping to get all his top names back as treble winners City again chase glory on three fronts. He said: “What I want is to arrive in the second part of the season with everyone fit. I want Erling back, Kevin back, Jeremy and John (Stones). “When they are back we have a team that can compete in different competitions until the end.” Huddersfield manager Darren Moore hopes his side will learn from a difficult experience. Moore said: “It was always going to be a tough game. We tried to come here and nullify the areas where Man City are excellent in and thought we did that to start off with. “You have to try and start on a positive note and disrupt their passing rhythm, but when the first goal goes in and then there is quickfire second one, the game runs away from you a bit. “The boys were just talking about the quality they were coming up against. Sometimes in moments of defeat it about the learning perspective and that is what we have taken from today.” – The Independent Moyes defends decision to play strongest team ERIK TEN HAG believes Manchester United need players with the character to cope with the scrutiny and pressure of life at Old Trafford, as Jadon Sancho is set to follow Donny van de Beek to the exit after failing to realise his potential at the club. The Dutchman managed Van de Beek at Ajax, where he played in a side who reached the Champions League semifinals, but gave him just two Premier League starts for United and just 21 minutes of first-team football this season before the midfielder joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan. And Sancho, one of the most expensive players in United’s history, is set to return to Borussia Dortmund on loan after the two clubs agreed a deal in principle. Seeing how some players have struggled at Old Trafford has convinced Ten Hag that it is a question of finding footballers with the personality to survive as he argued it is simpler to play for almost any club other than United. He said: “That is always on those players and how much confidence you have in your capabilities but I can tell you one thing – the Premier League is tough. “Manchester United is tough to play for because it is more easy to play in almost any other team than Manchester United because the pressure is that high always. “You have to deal with that. But if you have confidence in yourself, this is the best challenge and this is definitely the best club you want to be at as a player. “It depends on player to player, and it depends especially on the character of the player, their personality.” Ten Hag admitted that Van de Beek, a £40 million (RM232m) signing in 2020, is not the player he was when he worked with him at Ajax. “He has had many injuries, first of all. I worked now with him for two years (at United) and before he was under different managers here,” he added. “He had a loan before as well. Actually, from the first moment I came in here at Manchester United, he wasn’t the player he was at Ajax because he was injured. “So many times he was not available and then he struggled for a long time to recover from that injury. That is probably the main reason why he was not playing. “We decided for a loan in the summer but it didn’t come and then his opportunities are few because also we make appointments and we make agreements with players and contract players in that position. The competition was high.” – The Independent Ten Hag reveals why duo struggled at United █ BY ANDY HAMPSON █ BY ANDY SIMS █ BY RICHARD JOLLY Juve keep Inter in sight DUSAN VLAHOVIC made sure that Juventus stayed two points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan with the decisive late goal in yesterday’s 2-1 win at 10-man Salernitana. Serbia striker Vlahovic thumped home a perfect header in the first minute of stoppage time to snatch the points for Juve, completing a fine comeback from a goal down at the Stadio Arechi. “We gave everything tonight and we deserved to win. We never give up, we give everything right to the end,” said Vlahovic to DAZN. “Our aim is to get back into the Champions League, after that we’ll take each game as it comes and see where we end up.” Giulio Maggiore shot Salernitana ahead six minutes before the break but substitute Samuel Iling-Junior put the away side level in the 65th minute, setting up a blockbuster finale. Troubled Napoli crash again FURIOUS Napoli supporters launched flares onto the pitch after yesterday’s embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Torino which left them languishing in ninth place. Last season’s historic Scudetto has now been forgotten as Napoli sink further into the abyss with each passing week, their third defeat in four matches in all competitions fully deserved after a shambolic display in Turin. “We have to apologise to the fans for the performance… we’re trying to find ways to stimulate the team and get back to some sort of normality,” said Napoli’s sporting director Mauro Meluso. Barca edge lowly Barbastro BARCELONA were made to work hard against fourth-tier opponents as they booked their place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey yesterday with a 3-2 win at Barbastro, while Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Valencia earned narrow victories to progress. Fermin Lopez opened the scoring for Barca in the 18th minute with a tap-in from a low cross from Raphinha, who then made it 2-0 in the 51st minute. Adria de Mesa lifted the spirits of the home when he pull one back for Barbastro in the 60th minute. But substitute Robert Lewandowski made no mistake from the penalty spot to extend Barca’s lead with two minutes to go. Barbastro’s Marc Prat made it 3- 2 in stoppage time also with a penalty, but the hosts could not prevent Xavi Hernandez’s side sealing the win. Elsewhere, an own goal by Einar Galilea was enough for Real Sociedad to claim a 1-0 away win over Malaga while Sevilla beat Racing Ferrol 2-1 and Valencia had to dig deep to earn a 2-1 win at 10-man Cartagena after extratime. Revel’s young supporters had implored Mbappe to make the trip to the game played at Castres – Revel’s humble stadium only has capacity for 2,000 fans in the Haute-Garonne south-western region – in a video posted on social media. And they got their wish with the 25-year-old star included in manager Luis Enrique’s strong travelling party to the leaders of Regional 1, five rungs below the capital giants in the French league ladder. “Kylian wanted to play and when he wants to play there’s not a lot you can say,” said Luis Enrique. Mbappe evidently enjoyed his night out in the town near Toulouse, scoring a hattrick to become PSG’s top scorer in the competition with a haul of 30 goals. “When he plays everyone wins – the staff, the fans, the rivals,” added the PSG coach. Revel defender Maxence N’Guesson did get on the scoresheet but sadly for an own goal as the first half drew to a close. PSG are hungry to add to their cup tally after missing out on the title in the past two seasons. “The French Cup is one of our objectives this season, we know its importance,” Luis Enrique said before the game. On Saturday, having travelled nearly 7,000km from the Caribbean island of Martinique, Golden Lion got a 12-0 mauling from Ligue 1 big guns Lille. – AFP KYLIAN MBAPPE has agreed to join Real Madrid when his PSG contract expires at the end of the season. The Frenchman has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu for years and it appears Los Blancos have finally got their man, as per Foot Mercato. It’s understood the two parties reached an agreement a few days ago, with Mbappe free to talk to clubs from New Year’s Day due to his contractual situation. According to reports, the financial package Mbappe has agreed to is lower than the one Real Madrid offered him in 2022. The La Liga giants made Mbappe, 25, their No. 1 transfer target a few years ago and have attempted to lure him to Spain every summer since. They wanted to bring him in as Karim Benzema’s replacement following the striker’s move to Saudi Arabia last summer, but financial difficulties prevented the move from happening. Mbappe refused to sign an extension on his PSG contract when the deal collapsed, which initially saw him exiled from the first team. But the ex-Monaco man was eventually brought back into the picture by manager Luis Enrique, who hoped to convince him to stay in Paris. But it looks as if his efforts have failed, and PSG will now lose their star man for nothing. The news also comes as a blow to clubs in the Premier League, who were hoping to gazump Madrid and coax the 2018 World Cup-winner to England. Mbappe has been on fire this season, scoring 25 goals in 24 games for PSG. On Sunday, he scored a hattrick in his side’s 9-0 thumping of sixth-tier outfit Revel in the French Cup and is the leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 18 strikes – 10 more than his closest rival. He’s scored an eyewatering 237 goals in six-and-a-half years at the Parc des Princes, averaging 35 goals per season. He joined the club from Monaco in 2017 for £160 million (RM928m). His departure means PSG will have lost Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi all in the space of 12 months. At Madrid, he’ll link up with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, and will spearhead Carlo Ancelotti’s attack. – Express Newspapers Mbappe ‘to join PSG go on Real Madrid’ rampage Mbappe. – REUTERSPIX

Josue, 34, said they are ready to give a good fight now that national head coach Kim Pan Gon has fed them all the necessary information about the weaknesses of Jordan. “Jordan will be tough opponents, but the coach has already given us a lot of information about them. There are some weaknesses that we might try to exploit. “We are here to try to spring some surprises. If they become overconfident, we can surprise them. So, we just need to stay focused and do our job,” he said in an audio clip shared by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) today. The Brazilian-born also said that he is ready to play the full 90 minutes if chosen by Pan Gon. “I’m here to help. I’ll just give whatever the coach needs… whether it’s 10 minutes, 15 minutes or 90 minutes. I will give my best and I’m ready to help the boys,” he added. Malaysia, who ended their 42-year wait to qualify for the Asian Cup on merit, will begin their Group E campaign against Jordan on Jan 15, followed by Bahrain on Jan 20 and twotime champions South Korea on Jan 25. – Bernama IGOR STIMAC says Indian football is “definitely out of its slumber” but the outspoken coach warned against big expectations at the Asian Cup starting on Friday in Qatar. Football has struggled to find its feet in the cricket-obsessed nation of 1.4 billion people, with former FIFA president Sepp Blatter once calling India “a sleeping giant” of the sport. Former West Ham and Derby County defender Stimac was appointed coach in May 2019 and India briefly broke into the top 100 of FIFA’s world rankings for only the second time in nearly three decades. They are now 102nd, a spot below Kosovo, whose population is less than two million. “A giant is definitely out of its slumber now,” declared Stimac, before cautioning: “But I reckon it will take us another four years to enter the top 10 in Asia.” Under the former Croatia international, India qualified for the Asian Cup with three wins from three against Hong Kong, Afghanistan and Cambodia, scoring eight times and conceding once. India’s campaign starts on Saturday against 25th-ranked Australia and they have a mountain to climb in Qatar to get out of a group also containing Uzbekistan and Syria. “We are far from being happy with the draw but it is what it is,” the 56-year-old Stimac, part of the Croatia team that finished third at the 1998 World Cup, said in an email interview. “With a very short time for preparation it’s difficult to expect great things, but my even greater concern are the injuries to some of our key players. “Anyway, we are going to give our best and make it very difficult for our opponents.” This will be India’s fifth Asian Cup. They were runners-up in 1964 in a tournament that had only four teams, but apart from that they have never got out of the group phase and they have never reached the World Cup. Stimac’s side lost 3-0 at home to reigning Asian champions Qatar in World Cup qualifying in November, underlining the task facing them in the coming weeks. They also suffered friendly defeats to Malaysia and Iraq, before beating Kuwait 1-0 away in World Cup qualifying. Stimac blamed the Malaysia and Iraq losses on “terrible refereeing”. “I hate talking about it but this area in Asian football needs to improve a lot,” says the Croatian. Indian sports administrations are regularly embroiled in controversy and in 2022 Stimac threatened to quit unless there were “drastic” changes in the domestic game. “As a professional I have absolute freedom but I can work only with what I get from our decisionmakers,” he says. Stimac says more than 20 youngsters have been brought into the squad during his reign “and our supporters are finally enjoying some exciting football”. – AFP ‘Sleeping giant’ India awakening, says Stimac ENGLISH FA CUP (3rd round): Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2 (Kiwior 80-og, Diaz 90+5), Luton 0 Bolton 0, Manchester City 5 (Foden 33, 65, Alvarez 37, Jackson 58-og, Doku 74) Huddersfield 0, Nottingham Forest 2 (Dominguez 39, Gibbs-White 56) Blackpool 2 (Gabriel 25, Morgan 27), Peterborough 0 Leeds 3 (Ampadu 34, 90, Bamford 47), Shrewsbury 0 Wrexham 1 (O'Connor 72), West Brom 4 (Chalobah 7, Malcolm 15, Dike 27, Fellows 88) Aldershot 1 (Bray 90+5), West Ham 1 (Bowen 4) Bristol City 1 (Conway 61). KFA’s Media and Public Relations committee chairman Ibrahim Ismail in a statement said Zulkifli was released at about 10 am after giving his statement with three other individuals. “KFA were informed that on Thursday, Zulkifli was called up to give his statement to assist the MACC’s investigation before being notified that he was detained and remanded on Friday morning. “The KFA hope members of the public, especially football fans do not speculate and stop all baseless accusations because investigations are still in the early stages. The association denies all accusations of corruption and anyone accused is not guilty until proven,” he said in a statement yesterday. Ibrahim said the appointment of a CEO was to ensure a smooth administration process and to make sure the secretariat under the Honorary Secretary was functioning according to the KFA’s status and the association would also like to clarify that KFA does not have any connection with any state projects. He added that as per the status of KFA, all decisions related to the association must be decided by the Executive Council (KFA Exco) and the CEO only carries out his duties to ensure a smooth administration and management of the association. “Throughout the inception of the association, our main source of funding is through contributions and sponsorship from companies and corporate bodies and all funds received will be recorded in the annual financial report of the association and tabled for audit and scrutiny. “For the record, KFA’s CEO was appointed in August 2020 and has worked hard to resolve salary arrears and settled debts from statutory bodies since a change in the leadership and management of the association,” he said. Last Friday, media reports said the MACC had obtained a remand order to detain four individuals, including the CEO, to assist investigations into a case of receiving bribes amounting to RM6 million in 2020. According to a source, the alleged bribes were believed to have been given in exchange for assistance in securing tenders for constructing a racing circuit, as well as for managing, operating, and maintaining five water retention ponds in the state of Kedah. – Bernama HAVING recovered from a series of injuries last year and improved her physical condition, women’s doubles shuttler Peary Tan is now more confident and resilient in facing the new season, beginning with the Malaysia Open 2024 at the Axiata Arena today. The 23-year-old, who forms the country’s top women’s doubles combination with M. Thinaah, said a few months of enhanced physical training would prove to be vital in their bid to make a debut in the Paris 2024 Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to Aug 11. “My body condition now feels much better and confident, but I still need to do more exercise to maintain and improve further. “For 2024, I really want to be injuryfree and focus on improving my game step by step,” she told reporters after testing the courts ahead of the BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament yesterday. Pearly said clear communication and focus with Thinaah will be pivotal in their match today against China’s rising stars and world No. 8 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning, whom they have beaten in their two previous encounters. At the 2023 Malaysia Open, PearlyThinaah were knocked out in the first round by Bulgarian siblings Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva. Then, injuries and illnesses took their toll on Pearly in 2023, causing the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games champion’s world rankings to drop from fifth in February to 12th in December. Meanwhile, Thinaah hopes to continue the duo’s good momentum on home ground, where they finished runners-up in the 2023 Malaysia Masters last May. “I think everything is so far so good for us, and we are happy to play on home ground. We hope to give a good performance and motivate and support each other. “As for the 2024 season, I think we just want to focus game by game. We don’t want to think too far ahead, just want to focus point by point, game by game,” she said. Apart from Pearly-Thinaah, other Malaysians in the women’s doubles fray are veterans Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien, who are set to face China’s Li Wen MeiLiu Xuan Xuan, and Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing, who will face an uphill battle against South Korean world No. 2 Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee tomorrow. – Bernama

The Gunners dominated the first half but Jakub Kiwior conceded an own goal after 80 minutes before Luis Diaz’s neat finish in second half added-time was enough for Jurgen Klopp’s men to claim victory. Arteta’s side now have just one win in seven matches across all competitions and the boss agreed his side risk falling into a mental slump after failing to find the finishing touch. He said: “Probably it has (become a psychological issue). Especially after today, more than it was against Fulham or West Ham before that. “That’s why I think we need to reset. This break is good. It comes in a good time. “We’re going to as well feel how we feel and how I feel about them in difficult moments. Hopefully I can see that from other people too. “When things are going well they jump on the train. Now things are difficult, let’s see where they stand. “We haven’t capitalised. Not just today, but in the last few games as well. That’s why we’re not winning games. “Merit-wise there is no question that we deserve to win the games but the results are very different. “But when my team plays with that courage and attitude against probably the best team in Europe right now in terms of momentum what can I do but stick by them and support them? “What we need to do now is stick behind those players, give them some love, train them and make sure they visualise something very different to what is actually happening now. “They’ve done it. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel, because they’ve done it.” Arteta was quizzed on Arsenal’s transfer plans in his press conference but doubled down on his assessment, urging supporters to back the players already in the building rather than clamouring for new signings. “What I beg from the supporters is that they are behind the team,” he said. “Stick behind the team… they deserve the support with their attitude.” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was delighted by his side’s second-half reply, but brushed aside any suggestion he might look at the result as a harbinger for the Premier League title race, or even a boost for the Reds’ confidence in that chase. He said: “No. I can’t (read into it). It doesn’t mean nobody can, but I can’t. We don’t have a problem with belief and confidence, we are not really bothered about the things you are talking about because we can read the calendar. “We see it’s January; it’s cold outside, stuff like this, and you just have to stay warm and play as good as you can, and that’s what we try.” Klopp was more forthcoming about his squad, rattling off a list of injured and absent, including Virgil van Dijk, who was ruled out with illness before the contest but remains a “hopeful” return for Thursday’s (4am Malaysian time) Carabao Cup semifinal first leg with Fulham. He added: “It’s a tough game, nobody comes to Arsenal and wins just like this (clicks fingers), so in this game there will be difficult moments (and) if we start in these moments – which humans very often do – (looking) for excuses and then we realise who else is not here, it’s normal that we have these problems, then we are screwed. “But if you know these kinds of things you can avoid it – and that’s what we did. The boys enjoyed the game, at least in the second half. That’s really cool. “Staying in a game that looked in the first half like that, then growing into a game, is a pretty special thing to do.” – The Independent Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior (right) deflects a Liverpool corner into his own net during the English FA Cup third round match at the Emirates Stadium yesterday. – REUTERSPIX In a world of pain -Story - on page 29 Story on page 28 ‘Kevin is exceptional’ -Story on page 31 Pearly stronger now
