DM1ST mirror.co.uk/sport MONDAY 20.05.2024 DAILY MIRROR 51 manchester city 3 west ham 1 Foden 2, 18 Rodri 59 Kudus 42 premier league ETIHAD sTADIum DAILY MIRROR 51 of nature PEP: NO ONE HAD DONE IT... SO I SAID WHY NOT? never remotely felt they would blow it. The remarkable thing about this City team is that they do not feel as good as last year’s version – but they are still way ahead of the rest. Every rival fan will throw the 115 charges in their direction and the impending Premier League case. The sooner that is dealt with the better. It has dragged on for way too long. But if anything it has made the City fanbase even more defiant as the months go by and yet nothing was going to stop them celebrating the trophy lift on the pitch at the final whistle. They are watching – and enjoying – history being made in the club’s greatest era. Yet City’s biggest edge is their experience. Foden’s early opener calmed the nerves. West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta scuffed a clearance, Bernardo Silva fed Foden who then cut in from the left before unleashing a screamer into the top corner. It was 2-0 after 19 minutes. Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland ( far left) combined before Jeremy Doku’s cutback set up Foden for his second of the game and his 19th in this season’s Premier League. The Hammers briefly gave City a scare as Mohammed Kudus was easily the best player for the visitors and scored a spectacular overhead kick before half-time. But any chance of a fightback disappeared when Rodri’s low shot f lew past Alphonse Areola’s weak hand. It was enough to clinch City’s sixth title in eight years with Guardiola at the helm. They have become truly dominant. And while there is more history to be made at the Etihad Stadium, there is no sign of them stopping. By DaviD McDonnell PEP GuaRdiola celebrated Manchester City’s historic fourth straight league title triumph and branded it “insane”. City made it four titles in a row with victory over West Ham – the first time the feat has been achieved in 136 years of English football. Guardiola – who hinted next season could be his last at City - said: “When i moved here, if someone had said i would win six leagues in seven seasons i would say you’re insane - no way. “all these players for Manchester united and liverpool and Chelsea, all these teams. Now is our period. We are part of that. “in January and February i said no one has done it - why not? always, from past experience, we think about the titles with two months left. “in November and december it’s not good to think of it.” asked about his future, Guardiola, who has one year left on his contract, said: “The reality is i’m closer to leaving than staying. We’ve talked with the club - my feeling is that i want to stay now. i will stay next season and during the season we will talk. But eight or nine years – we will see.” Match-winner Phil Foden, who scored twice for City, said: “i never get bored of it - you want this feeling every time. “When you win something there is no better feeling. i want to keep winning as much as i can. “it’s so hard to put into words what we’ve done today. No team has ever done it and we’ve put ourselves into the history books. “To win the Premier league four times, no team has ever done it before, so to do it means we’re up there with the best teams of all time.” City striker Erling Haaland, who retained the Golden Boot, said: “after we beat Spurs we kind of knew we were going to do it. i was confident. “it’s like we add on a little bit extra because that’s when it really matters. i’m happy and i can’t complain.” outgoing West Ham boss david Moyes paid tribute to Guardiola and said: “There used to be an argument that clubs couldn’t win the title back-to-back. “Pep has blown that sky-high. Four in a row is incredible.” Perfect start... You will be asked to assume a new role. This could involve revenue raising. You take your job seriously and you will get on with it. People believe that progress is coming but it will not be without a huge amount of effort. Your efforts to get ahead could be hampered by a series of disturbances and distractions. This will make for a more challenging time than you had anticipated. You may have prepared well for this moment but it will be unexpected problems that now get in the way. Being in nature will feel calming. There is some confusion about a recent event. People will be looking to you to piece together what actually happened. A number of issues need to be confirmed. It might feel as if you are spending most of your time searching for answers but this is the only way to try to make sense of a situation. A colleague or neighbour will prove to be exceptionally helpful when it comes to a private project you are ready to launch. You’re doing a wonderful job to improve your social and professional standing. A difficult family matter will make a dramatic improvement. A well-connected person will be meeting staff and volunteers at a local charity. This is your chance to speak on behalf of a good cause. Additional funding will ensure a project that benefits many people will continue to thrive and prosper. This will be a landmark moment. Something you hear will make you realise you have been taking a friendship or situation for granted. Although you will feel guilty about this, you might also remind yourself that you have been busy and that’s why you have failed to notice how hard it has been for a loved one to cope. You might wish you hadn’t checked your phone on waking when a message you missed last night will be on your mind for the rest of the day. You will be reminded of a Gemini friend’s birthday that is coming up soon. The perfect gift will be found on an online marketplace. You would rather get on with jobs you aren’t keen on and get them over with than to waste the morning worrying about something you cannot change. Throw yourself straight into unpleasant work or domestic duties that must be done. It will be a relief to get them over with. It’s not going to please you to have to wait for a repairman or professional who doesn’t turn up. Could a recently acquired habit be damaging your health? Whether it is gambling, snacking between meals or some other overindulgence, listen to your conscience and stop it now. Leave it to someone else to respond to a question that is asked in the workplace. They are more likely to suggest a better solution to the problem that has arisen. Even if you would prefer to use methods that have worked before, a new technique could prove remarkably successful. In a meeting with some powerful people, it would be better to listen more and talk less. You will observe and hear things that will be beneficial to you in the future. Stay clear of getting into political discussions unless you are sure that others who are present share your views. Sometimes you have to wait for the right moment before acting on new ideas. It may be necessary to put some of your more grand plans on hold until you can afford them. It won’t be much fun having to lower your sights due to a lack of finances but, for now, there is no other way. DAILY MIrror 20.05.2024 2 mirror.co.uk/sport/football DM1ST BANK HOLIDAY DEALS MUST END 27TH MAY In assocIatIon wIth EUROSPOT FOUR BLIMEY, ALEX ALEXANDER SoRLoth hit four for Villarreal as they came from 4-1 down to draw with Real Madrid in an eightgoal thriller. Champions Real lead at the break thanks to Arda Guler’s brace and one each from Joselu and Lucas Vasquez, but Sorloth (inset) hit a second-half hat-trick inside eight minutes to earn a share of the spoils. Barcelona sealed their runners-up spot with a 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. In Serie A, Sassuolo were relegated after defeat to Cagliari. thanks to Arda Guler’s of the spoils. their runners-up win over Rayo Vallecano. ten hag gets timely tonic but there’s no escaping record Prem low for United once again when he rolled Billy Gilmour and Igor before slamming home past Jason Steele with his right foot in the 88th minute. Brighton’s historic season, which saw them play European football for the first time ever finished with a whimper having won just one of their final 10 Premier League games. Manager De Zerbi was still gratefully received by the home faithful despite Saturday’s shock announcement, as he saluted the Amex faithful for the final time before waving goodbye. The Italian coach will not be out of work for long. before Joao Pedro squandered a glorious chance, flashing wide after fine feet from out-of-contract Adam Lallana, who left the field in tears. United could also have been ahead, however, after Scott McTominay collected Bruno Fernandes’ through ball before blazing over. Brighton maintained their dominance after the interval and were inches away from breaking the deadlock when Casemiro cleared off the line from Pedro before the returning Lisandro Martinez deflected Lallana’s effort narrowly over. But United quickly turned the screw and started to pose a real threat on the counter-attack. It was simple, yet effective, oldfashioned route one that took them ahead in the 73rd minute. Makeshift central defender Casemiro launched a long ball to substitute Hojlund, before it bobbled through to Dalot to dispatch confidently. Then Hojlund was right in the thick of the action the Red Devils continue to invite pressure from their opponents, conceding countless shots upon their goal. It has been the theme of their season and was on display one last time at the Amex before second-half goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund made it two wins on the spin. Brighton appeared determined to give departing boss De Zerbi the perfect send-off, while also relishing the chance to inflict further misery upon United’s under-fire Dutchman. Underwhelming loanee Sofyan Amrabat was torn to shreds on what will surely prove to be his final Premier League appearance for the Red Devils. Carlos Baleba left the Moroccan in his wake before sending Valentin Barco through on goal but the teenage Argentine leftback fired straight at Andre Onana after dancing inside Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Adam Webster also went close with three separate headers BRIGHTON 0 MAN UNITED 2 Brighton (4-2-3-1): Steele 6; Moder 6, Webster 6, Igor 4, Barco 6 (Lamptey 81); Baleba 6 (Gilmour 81), Gross; Adingra 6 (Fati 81), Lallana (Enciso 57, 6), Pedro 6; Welbeck 6. By Ryan TaylOR ROBERTO DE ZERBI says he wants to work in the Premier League again after parting company with Brighton. Though the Italian did not disclose details, he cited the club’s “plan” as the reason behind his decision to quit the Amex, claiming there is no other team in the hunt for his services, despite links with Bayern Munich, Juventus, AC Milan and Barcelona. De Zerbi said: “I spent the last 24-48 hours strong and in a tough way. We didn’t find the right agreement to move on and stay together but nothing changed for me. “I hope to work in the Premier League again. I don’t know where or when. For me it was an honour working here.” When asked if he was ready to return to work imminently, De Zerbi (left) added: “I put football top of my life and I want to keep it there.” Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag says Manchester United must repay their fans by winning the FA Cup on Saturday. The Dutchman said: “I have never had this experience when you have a season like us, which is by far not good enough, that the supporters are with us. “But we have to pay them back and we have to do everything to give them a trophy next week... we have to perform better.” Change of plan but Roberto will be back FINISH IN STYLE By Ryan TaylOR MANCHESTER UNITED could not escape more unwanted history – despite a morale-boosting final-day victory ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final. While Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton tenure ended in defeat, Newcastle’s convincing win at Brentford means United recorded their lowest Premier League finish of eighth. Not only that but it is the first time in Premier League history that United have finished a campaign with a negative goal difference – and that has not happened since the 1989-90 campaign. This season they ended on minus one. But in a strange twist, if United win the FA Cup, they will secure a place in the Europa League – and knock the Toon out of Europe in the process. There have been more than 50 separate cases of injuries and illness, but that serves as no excuse for some of the performances this side have served up this season. Even David Moyes’ United team that finished seventh in 2014 ended the campaign with a goal difference of 21. It could all prove to be terminal for manager Erik ten Hag (above), regardless of what happens at Wembley against Manchester City. Ten Hag has ultimately failed to stem the flow of bleeding as Diogo Dalot scores the opener for United past keeper Jason Steele P W d L F a Pts B Leverkusen..... 34 28 6 0 89 24 90 But he refused to divulge any details from the “very nice” meal after the Blues sealed sixth place. Pochettino (right) is expected to have a season review with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart in the coming days. Pochettino said: “I’m staying a few more days in London and my phone is going to be on. “I’m not going to talk about (the dinner) but if I invite you alone and we have a dinner, it’s not for a bad thing. If I need to tell you something (bad), I say go for a coffee.” Pochettino said that he was “proud” of his players for their strong finish and he does not expect much activity in the transfer market this summer. he added: “We will have 80 to 85 percent of the same players. It’s about having continuity in the ideas and the knowledge between them.” Andoni Iraola watched Bournemouth slip to 12th in the final standings and said: “We could not ask any more from our players.” Poch scores a late dinner bourne again Caicedo celebrates his fantastic long-range strike to give Blues crucial lead

20.05.2024 DAILY MIrror mirror.co.uk/sport/football 5 DM1ST In assoc In assocIatIon wIth GOOD? NOT HALF! caicedo 50-yard wonder goal the highlight as Blues look as if they are getting it right at last that he is gradually improving an inexperienced squad. Since the midway point of the campaign they have had the division’s fourth-best record and in the past month began to play with freedom and verve. Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, who would have won the Premier League Golden Boot this season but for a certain Erling Haaland, reflected that collective confidence with good chances inside the opening two and a half minutes. Then came Caicedo’s moment of magic, a goal from the longest distance in a Premier League contest since Wayne Rooney scored with a sensational strike for Everton against West Ham in 2017. Bournemouth, with top scorer Dominic Solanke starting as a substitute, only began to threaten approaching the interval as Ryan Christie and James Tavernier tried their luck from range against a Chelsea defence featuring Thiago Silva for the final time. And, when Sterling made it 2-0, it looked like a pretty comfortable second period was in store for the veteran Brazilian. But Andoni Iraola’s team hit back immediately thanks to Unal’s shot taking a heavy deflection off Badiashile en route to goal and for a brief period the mid-table visitors appeared dominant. A couple of months back Chelsea would probably have crumbled at the first sign of such pressure but they soon regained control. Star man Palmer displayed a rare piece of indecision when in a promising position to score a third and Christopher Nkunku twice went close. Bournemouth did not give up, however, and Solanke struck wide from a tight angle before Dango Ouattara brought a good save from Djordje Petrovic late on. And, four minutes into added time, Ouattara was denied again by the keeper before Christie’s follow-up was blocked and former Liverpool star Solanke inexplicably sent the rebound over. By AlAn Smith MOISES CaICEdO left it late but on the final day o f C h e l s e a ’s c o n f u s i n g campaign the m i d f i e l d e r p r o d u c e d arguably the season’s best goal. It was certainly the longestrange effort as he struck from more than 50 yards to help secure sixth spot for Mauricio Pochettino’s team. The Ecuadorian does not find the net very often – his previous club effort was in September 2022 – but this beauty was worth waiting for. Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto had rushed off his line to thwart a Raheem Sterling counter-attack, only to send his clearance straight to Caicedo just inside the Chelsea half. He took a touch and, with Neto retreating, sent a sublime right-footed attempt over the heads of everyone and into the net. And that set Chelsea on the way to a fifth consecutive win as Sterling doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half following a weaving dribble down the left. Bournemouth pulled a goal back when Enes Unal’s shot was deflected in off Benoit Badiashile but there was no panic from the hosts as they signed off on a positive note. Pochettino is expected to sit down with the sporting directors Paul Winstanley and L a u r e n c e Stewart in the coming days for a debrief and, despite going for dinner with chairman Todd Boehly on Friday, has been coy when discussing his future. In a 780- word pre-match letter to supporters, Chelsea’s demanding owners outlined a six-point plan to bring the good times back to Stamford Bridge. To summarise, they want consistent silverware and Champions League participation with a squad made up of the world’s most talented young players. Pochettino has fallen short of those lofty demands in his first season. Before yesterday’s match, tributes were paid to departing players Wes Foderingham, Max Lowe, Chris Basham, Oliver Norwood and George Baldock. Loanees such as James McAtee and Ben Brereton Diaz are set to return to their parent clubs and Anel Ahmedhodzic is likely to head the list of players to be sold. United could have been 2-0 up early on as Brereton Diaz broke clear of the Spurs defence before blazing a right-foot shot over the bar. That came in the third minute and seven minutes later the Chile international striker went even closer, firing against a post from Gustavo Hamer’s cross. After a sluggish start, Spurs gradually woke up and led in the 14th minute after skipper Heung-min Son found Kulusevski in space inside the 18-yard box. T h e S w e d e showed unerring accuracy to strike a low left-foot shot which went in off the far post. Spurs continued to probe and Rodrigo Bentancur saw a superb strike rebound off the same post before rolling just in front of Foderingham’s goalline. Blades goalkeeper Foderingham made fine saves to deny Kulusevski, Son and Porro before the break. United didn’t throw in the towel – as they have done too often this season, particularly at home – but they could not score as Cameron Archer failed to convert when clean through. And Tottenham put a smile on Postecoglou’s face with two second-half goals. In the 59th minute, Porro struck when he smashed the ball into the net from 14 yards after good work from Son down the left wing. Oliver Arblaster blocked James Maddison’s effort and Foderingham made a fine save before Porro finally rifled home. Two quickly became three as Maddison crossed low from the left flank for Kulusevski to bundle home – the 104th goal the Blades had conceded in a disastrous season. SHEFFIELD UTD 0 TOTTENHAM 3 Dejan double stamps the passport for ange BY ROSS HEPPENSTALL ANGE POSTECOGLOU saw his Tottenham side enjoy a stroll in the Sheffield sunshine before flying straight to Melbourne. Big Ange is heading to his home city for Spurs’ lucrative friendly against Newcastle at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday. That game was played out in a subdued atmosphere, with Postecoglou (below) describing the experience as the “worst” of his managerial career. This final-day trip to Bramall Lane had a more relaxed feel, with Chris Wilder’s Blades having been relegated last month. Spurs’ hopes of Champions League qualification ended with the defeat to City and they arrived in South Yorkshire needing just a point to guarantee finishing above Chelsea in fifth. By Chris McKenna FOR just over seven minutes the chant went round Anfield to the tune of the Beatles’ ‘I feel fine’. It began in the 87th minute, by the 88th the whole of the stadium – barring the pocket of Wolves fans – were on their feet clapping their hands to the beat. The only interlude was for a Mo Salah chance. It wasn’t taken. The fans didn’t care. “I’m in love, and I feel fine” continued to rock this famous ground which Jurgen Klopp brought back to life with seven major trophies. The song went on throughout stoppage time as Klopp’s final game came to a close. It only stopped when the PA interrupted to inform them that the man of the moment would be back out to say goodbye when he took centre stage at Anfield. Then Dua Lipa’s One Kiss took over. Another anthem of Klopp’s reign. Fitting really that he bowed out with the sounds he created playing a part. This is the man who promised to bring ‘heavy metal football’ to these parts and he certainly made the Reds rock. Liverpool won the game, by the way. Alexis Mac Allister (right) and Jarell Quansah scored the final goals of the Klopp era to see off Wolves, who were reduced to 10-men in the first half. Nelson Semedo was sent-off after a VAR review for a naughty challenge on Mac Allister. It was one of the few times Klopp rose from his seat on the Anfield bench. A man who consistently manned the edge of his technical area here for almost nine years seemed to want to just soak this one up from the comfort of his red seat. Who could blame him? Klopp fought back the tears as ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ played out before kickoff. There had been flares for the team bus arrival a little while earlier as the blue sky around Anfield was mixed with red smoke by the supporters. This was their chance to say ‘Thank you’ or ‘Danke’ as the mosaic in the stand before kick-off read with a big German-coloured heart on the Kop. As the game went on, the fans went through their catalogue of chants for some of the players who helped Klopp to a Premier league, Champions League, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups since he arrived here in 2015. The final whistle came and Klopp embraced those around him before heading off for a hug with FSG boss John W Henry and Tom Werner in the tunnel. As the crowd waited for Klopp to re-emerge after full-time, Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ reverberated around. Th e hope i s that everything will be alright here without Klopp but he will leave a huge void. O f c o u r s e , t h e departing coaching staff had to get their farewell first. Klopp wouldn’t have it any other way. You know the tune by now. “I’m so glad that Jurgen is a Red” got another airing as the main man himself walked out through the guard of honour to a stage built on the centre circle where he was met by Sir Kenny Dalglish among others. Klopp was presented with a replica of each of the trophies he won. Then he took to the mic. “I thought I’d be in pieces,” he said, before a quip about the fans ignoring his request not to sing his song during games in the last few weeks. That just sparked another rendition. “If you sing it next year that would be funny,” he joked. “You are the superpower of world football,” he said, in a nod to the supporters who created the atmosphere here that helped create the tune for Klopp’s teams to play to. But then Klopp turned to the orchestrator as he led a song for his replacement, Arne Slot. “I love you to bits,” he added. “I’m one of you now.” There was justfist pumps in front o“I’ll Never Walk Amessage on the back otops the staff and theThey may not seeagain. The now former Kop manager also urged Reds fans to get behind Arne Slot – even before the Dutchman has been officially confirmed as boss. Klopp said: “When people realise, it’s all good. Honestly. “If I carry on, these guys and others will say, ‘He’s been there too long’. “You have to be the spark. I love the squad. There is so much potential. They will make changes here and there. “I’m sure you will all agree there does not need an overhaul. We finished third. “We were ahead of schedule. It’s a statement in this strong league and I’m absolutely fine with that.” Feyenoord’s Slot is expected to be confirmed as manager in the coming days, but the German gave him a warm welcome as part of his farewell speech on the Anfield pitch. “You welcome the new manager like you welcomed me,” said Klopp. “You go all-in from the first day. And you keep believing and you push the team. Change is good. “No one tells you to stop believing. We decide if we are worried or excited. We decide if we believe. We decide if we trust or don’t trust – and since today I am one of you and I keep believing in you.” Klopp leaves having won the Champions League, ended their 30-year wait for a league title and claimed the Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. They had to battle with the financial might and brilliance of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City during his near nine years in charge. Klopp added: “The other clubs, with the most money and the best managers, they win it. We didn’t have the best manager and never had the best team – but for a while we played the best football and I love that. “We are a rock-solid club and don’t overspend. I just understand this from the Liverpool way.” But as City celebrated their title triumph, Guardiola was close to tears when paying tribute to rival Klopp. “I will miss him a lot,” said Guardiola. “Jurgen has been an important part of my life. He helped me with his team. “I wish him all the best. “I hope his final game was special. He will be part of the legacy of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.” goodbye boss... Alexander Isak netted his 25th goal in a demolition of Brentford to complete the best season by a Newcastle striker since Alan Shearer 20 years ago. Victory, after 102 goals in the campaign and 86 in the league, means the Geordies’ season will be decided at Wembley on Saturday in the FA Cup final. Finishing seventh, ahead of Manchester United, might earn the Toon a place in the Europa Conference League. But if United beat Pep Guardiola’s champions, they will nab a Europa League spot and Chelsea in sixth will drop to the third tier of UEFA competition, leaving Newcastle with nothing. The Toon fans seemed confident, serenading the players with: “Europe again, ole, ole, ole.” It’s a drop off from last year when Newcastle finished fourth, a n d w i l l mean a drop in income from the £37m netted from Europe this season. After a 51-game campaign, Newcastle last night flew to Australia for two exhibition friendlies in Melbourne and will be in the air, returning on a 22-hour flight, when their fate is decided. After that the mission this summer will be to keep Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, who scored a goal and provided two assists. Among the end-of-season landmarks, Isak’s goal took him to 25 for the season, the first time a Newcastle player has reached that milestone since 2004 when Shearer got 28. After early scares, including an Ivan Toney goal scratched off by VAR, Harvey Barnes opened the scoring after 21 minutes with a close-range header. Barnes was called in to start because Anthony Gordon was left at home with an ankle injury, and took his chance. The visitors worked the ball right with Emil Krafth feeding Brazil international Guimaraes, who curled in a cross for Barnes’ fifth of the season. They got the second thanks to the brilliance of Isak, who exploited a stumble by Ethan Pinnock. The Swede raced in on goal and slid in a great cross behind the defence for Jacob Murphy to score at the back post. Within 90 seconds United had a third. Murphy was involved again, winning the ball on the right wing. Guimaraes touched the ball into Isak’s path for his second assist of the game. The Golden Boot was no longer at stake but Isak took his total to 21 in the league. Newcastle have a decent chance of keeping their star £100m striker but he is Champions League quality. MAT3TA makes it look eze Villa shattered by Palace’s red-hot striker’s hat-trick and double from midfield maestro DAILY Mirror 20.05.2024 12 mirror.co.uk/sport/football DM1ST In association with HAVING A FIELD DAY Palace stars Mateta, Edouard and Eze celebrate their huge win on an impressive run of form IT WAS a good job Unai Emery’s Champions League quest came to a successful end earlier this week. Because the Spaniard really would not have wanted to run into hat-trick hero JeanPhilippe Mateta and two-goal Eberechi Eze with a top-four finish at stake, given the Eagles end-of-season form. The hosts’ sparkling end-ofseason finale – with those two goalscorers and Michael Olise in such confident and devastating mood – delighted a sun-kissed Selhurst Park crowd. Villa, having limped over the line earlier this week, just crashed into a heap in south London as their lengthy, and it must be said, injury-hit, campaign came to a juddering halt as they fell to their heaviest Premier League defeat since losing 6-1 to Manchester City three years ago. It would have been a tricky time anyway for Villa to face Oliver Glasner’s rejuvenated Eagles who went into this on the back of an unbeaten sixgame run. There was not the remotest hope that it would not be extended yesterday. Emery’s men have proved their own point this season by making the top-four cut. The problem was that yesterday they ran into a Palace side wanting to make one of their own. And no one exemplified that more than man-mountain Mateta who had a field day as Villa’s makeshift defence gave him the freedom of south London. He ended with the match ball and was denied another by one of those VAR decisions where the lines were drawn so that it could have gone either way. It was Olise, who drew bookings following fouls from John McGinn, Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne such was his influence, who created the opener. The Frenchman, so slick in taking the ball on the half-turn with his left foot and then motoring away from his markers, opened up Villa when Mateta made a diagonal run that was not picked up in the ninth minute. The big forward thumped a left-footer into the bottom corner. That made it 11 from his last 13 outings. It was to get better for him. Six minutes before the int er val , that stati stic improved. Adam Wharton fed Olise who this time found Daniel Munoz on the right. Mateta finished confidently with the outside of his right foot (right). Villa’s players could hardly raise a gallop after the break and they were cut apart time and again. If the third had a touch of good fortune in the build-up, when a Chris Richards ball down the left hit Moussa Diaby on the heel and went into the path of Eze, then the finish did not. He motored forward and beat Olsen at his near post. The fourth was perhaps the pick of the bunch. Dean Henderson’s throw to the halfway line was picked up by Eze who travelled across the pitch with the ball. He fed M a t e t a w h o f i n i s h e d confidently. His strike-partner returned the favour with a neat one-two moments later that enabled Eze to nab his second. Since putting the brakes on Liverpool’s title charge at Anfield, they have been in irresistible form, lifting themselves into 10th place in the Premier League and adding an extra £6.2million to the club coffers thanks to the two places they gained from the final day’s action. As for Emery, and his son Lander, who was named on the bench, this was a chastening day. But their work was done. As for Palace, they will hope their front three is still wearing red and blue when next season kicks off. crystal palace 5 aston villa 0 55% possession 45% 9 shots on target 2 3 shots off target 6 545 TOTAL PASSES 446 89% PASSING SUCCESS 86% 2 corners 4 3 offside 1 10 fouls 8 0 1 cards 4 0 REF: Darren Bond Att: 25,191 c palace a villa JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA MAN OF THE MATCH premier league By Neil Moxley Crystal Palace: Henderson 6, Clyne 6, Richards 6, Andersen 7, (Tomkins 87) Mitchell 6, Guehi 7, (Lerman 75) Munoz 7, Wharton 7, (Riedewald 87) Olise 8, Eze 8, (Ayew 87) Mateta 9 (Edouard 75) Aston Villa: Olsen 6, Konsa 5, Carlos 4, Lenglet 4, Digne 4, McGinn 5, (Munroe 87) Luiz 5, Chambers 3, (Iroegbunam 68, 5) Diaby 5, (Kesler-Hayden 87) Duran 5, Watkins 5 (Kellyman 68, 5) by Neil Moxley OLIVER Glasner said he was confident his three crown jewels will be at Crystal Palace next season – or else the club will generate enough cash to build a new stadium. The Eagles boss (above) spoke glowingly of JeanPhilippe Mateta, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze as they tore Champions League newbies Aston Villa to pieces at Selhurst Park. Mateta, (3) and Eze (2) grabbed the goals in a 5-0 win but Olise was a menace throughout as the south Londoners finished winning six matches out of their final seven this season. He said: “I am very confident they’ll be here because they have contracts and no one has told me they’ll be leaving. “What we have done is that we have shown them that Crystal Palace have ambition. “We have shown them how we want to play, which path we want to go down, which journey we want to ride together. “They can show their strengths, qualities and personalities and express themselves. “They fit together. This is what we can do. If something else happens, then this is football. “But Crystal Palace will be able to build a new Selhurst, because it will cost a lot of money.” Villa boss Unai Emery admitted his side were wellbeaten and refused to criticise any of his squad as his heavily changed team were on the end of a hiding. He said he would be taking a rest, but would be staying in touch with the club’s decision-makers to plot their assault on the Champions League next season. He said: “This was not a good result. They showed us their power. It was difficult after we had achieved our biggest objective. We couldn’t keep feeling strong on the field. “We have to take some decisions. I’m going to stop, rest and keep in touch with the club to take decisions for next season.” GLASNER’S 3 JEWELS CAN BUILD

20.05.2024 DAILY Mirror mirror.co.uk/sport/football 13 DM1ST In association with SEALED WITH A CHRIS Wood double confirms another season in the top flight for Forest By John Richardson A RELEGATION wake for Burnley but still wide awake in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest with Turf Moor old boy Chris Wood back in the groove. For once Nuno Espirito Santo and his side were glad miracles don’t always happen. A compelling documentary chronicling the amazing Brian Clough days was entitled ‘I Believe In Miracles.’ Luton needed one to save them from the same fate as Burnley. It needed a 12- goal swing to condemn Forest and produce a great escape for the Hatters. And that looked even crazier as Forest and Wood went to town from the kick-off. A quickfire Wood double against his former club made it the same old story for the suffering home fans. Just two league wins here all season, the worst home record in their history. For manager Vincent Kompany, whose old club Manchester City were making Premier League history, it is a rapid return to the Championship, where Burnley excelled as champions last season. It had taken just 14 minutes for Wood to confine to the past a succession of nightmare misses in front of goal – misses that had prolonged Forest’s relegation worries. Sadly for Kompany (below) and his already doomed Clarets, Wood’s goal revival was played out in front of fans who used to worship him. With under two minutes on the clock, Forest, who had bolted out of the blocks with menace and gusto, were 1-0 up. It could not have been more simple. Anthony Elanga burst down the right and a low cross was swept in by an unmarked Wood. And things were about to get a lot worse for Kompany. Morgan Gibbs-White set up Ryan Yates inside the area and the midfielder’s shot was flicked past Arijanet Muric by Wood, only for the offside flag to be raised. VAR hasn’t been Forest’s ally of late – their travelling fans having already made their point with some abusive chants. This time Stockley Park was on Forest’s side and Wood was celebrating his second goal, his 14th Premier League goal of the season. There’s not a single penalty in that tally, meaning he has outscored Liverpool marksman Mo Salah when spot-kicks are discounted. Burnley should have hit back in the 22nd minute only for Zeki Amdouni to fire over from close range from Jacob Bruun Larsen’s inviting pass. Amdouni was off target again just before the break as boos rang out from frustrated Burnley fans Muric had to smother a Wood header at the near post as the striker went in search of a hat-trick. The Clarets keeper made a brilliant stop to foil a Gibbs-White curler while Wood blasted over the bar, much to the annoyance of Gibbs-White who was unmarked alongside him. Burnley skipper Josh Cullen offered some hope with a deflected 72nd-minute strike which spun past keeper Matz Sels as Kompany and the Clarets waved goodbye to the Premier League. burnley 1 nottingham forest 2 JUST TWO GOOD Chris Wood celebrates his two goals that emphasised Forest’s place in the Prem 73% possession 27% 3 shots on target 6 10 shots off target 4 655 TOTAL PASSES 241 90% PASSING SUCCESS 69% 4 corners 3 0 offside 2 11 fouls 5 0 1 cards 0 0 REF: Graham Scott Att: 21,109 burnley n forest chris wood MAN OF THE MATCH premier league Burnley: Muric 7, Assignon 6 (Vitinho 46, 6), O’Shea 6, Esteve 7, Taylor 6 (Brownhill 74), Odobert 7, Cullen 7 (Cork 83), Berge 6, Bruun Larsen 6 (Gudmundsson 46, 6), Amdouni 7 (Rodriguez 74), Foster 6 Nottingham Forest: Sels 6, Montiel 7, Boly 6, Murillo 7, Toffolo 7, Yates 7 (Sangare 58, 6), Danilo 7 (Niakhate 79), Elanga 7 (Kouyate 88), Gibbs-White 7, Hudson-Odoi 6 (Ribeiro 88), Wood 8 (Awoniyi 79) By John Richardson Jubilant Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo treated himself to a few drinks after a successful relegation rescue act. Needing a miracle, they slipped to a fifth defeat in their last six games, conceding four times to a Fulham team with nothing to play for. Only Sheffield United ended the season with more goals conceded than Luton’s 85. A double from Raul Jimenez and further strikes from Adama Traore and Harry Wilson confirmed the inevitable for the Hatters. Luton have often played some good football this season and scored decent goals of their own through Carlton Morris and Alfie Doughty. But they went down managing only one win in their last 18 matches, and now face some difficult questions this summer. Boss Rob Edwards was in tears after last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham. That left Luton needing to win and overturn a 12-goal swing over Nottingham Forest to stay up. And there was plenty of gallows humour going on with chants of, “We’re going to win 12-0!” from the home end. But everyone already knew it was over and all the pre-match talk was about next season. It’s going to be another summer of change at the Kenny with the club hoping to begin building work on a new stadium in the next few weeks. Luton were still painting steps here 90 minutes before they kicked off the season as their bid to get a safety certificate signed off went to the wire. Their survival fight didn’t quite go the distance – but they deserve huge credit for competing the way they did, especially on such a limited budget. And their fans responded to the news that Forest had scored early by signing: “Watford away, ole ole!” It all went flat when Traore took a touch on the edge of the box and then smashed home a shot which curled into the far corner. But it wasn’t long before Calvin Bassey tripped Chiedozie Ogbene to concede a penalty, which Morris rolled home. Luton couldn’t even make it to halftime level as Jimenez side-footed home a cross from Wilson in stoppage time. And a glancing Jimenez header from a Harrison Reed free-kick after half-time essentially ended this one as a contest. Doughty pulled one back with a freekick which found its way past Bernd Leno without touching anyone on the way in. But Wilson promptly hit the crossbar for Fulham and then got the goal he deserved after a free-flowing move, firing in from 25 yards. Tempers flared when Traore and Morris were booked for a flare-up sparked by the Fulham winger pushing Luton’s skipper into the boards. And with 13 minutes to go Edwards made a sentimental substitution, handing reserve keeper James Shea his only taste of top-flight action this season. down n’ dought Albert Sambi Lokonga pulls crestfallen Alfie Doughty up off the deck

DAILY Mirror 20.05.2024 16 mirror.co.uk/sport/football DM1ST In association with DANILO ORSI, whose hat-trick helped send Crawley to Wembley, got their promotion party going yesterday as they booked their place in League One. Orsi scored the opener four minutes before the break and Liam Kelly, who added a late second, called it “the best day of my life.” Having finished the season in seventh place, Crawley celebrated their first-ever visit to Wembley in style in this League Two play-off final. They had beaten MK Dons 8-1 on aggregate in the semifinals, with Orsi scoring three times in the away leg. “We were underdogs at the start of the season so to say we’ve won the play-offs is an amazing feeling,” said Orsi. “I’ve had a good season and it’s thanks to the coaches and players. I’ve got family up there and everyone is over the moon.” The win capped a remarkable couple of years for the 28-year-old. Last season he was a part of the Grimsby team that reached the FA Cup quarter-finals. And his Wembley goal made it 25 in all competitions this campaign. Crawley were spurred on by the tireless Kelly, who had the Crewe players chasing shadows throughout. He said: “It’s what you dream about as a kid. It doesn’t feel real and it will take a while to sink in. It’s every kid’s dream to win at Wembley and then to score as well... “It’s a day I’ll never forget, the best day of my life so far.” Crawley manager Scott Lindsey said: “Unbelievable. I put a lot of information into the players and they’ve executed it brilliantly all season. I thought we got the tactics spot on and we were really good in possession as well.” Crewe boss Lee Bell blamed a wafer-thin squad for the defeat. “It’s just been a stretch for us in recent weeks because we’ve got a thin squad,” he said. “I’m proud of my players and staff and I couldn’t ask for any more from them. “I’m devastated for them. If we can keep that squad together and add one or two more players we’ll see where we are next season.” crawley to bet on the right orsi Crawley town 2 crewe alexandra 0 League Two, Play-off Final josh is won of a kind cup for it Josh screams with delight as he holds the play-off trophy While Murphy dazzled, Bolton boss Ian Evatt faces a summer of soulsearching after the Trotters’ wretched blow-out. Evatt offered no assurances about his own future, admitting: “It was our worst performance of the season. It wasn’t just one or two things wrong – it was everyone and everything. “We’ve let the fans down and we’ve let go of a massive opportun i t y. I n t h e summer I’ll have time to think about what’s next. “Normally we are fast, aggressive and intense, but that was timid, slow and poor quality. That performance was inexcusable.” promotion. To help out the gaffer at Norwich, Jacob wore blue boots and I wore orange ones. “The story about the players’ Christmas party is true, and it was about 10 years in the making. “A lot of clubs draw lots alphabetically (to choose their outfit) and I’d always wanted to get a J or M. Luckily I got a J, which was perfect, so I went as Jacob in a full Newcastle kit. “We don’t get mistaken that much, but I used to get the odd person telling me how well I was doing and confusing with me Jacob until I rolled my eyes and told them, ‘No, I’m Josh.’ “But at least Oxford fans know who I am and this is a special day which will live with me for the rest of my life. “But the most important thing is that the club is back where it belongs.” Murphy, 29, is too good for League One – but he is out of contract this summer and Oxford messiah Des Buckingham’s first task will be to keep him at the Kassam. As a qualified pilot, Top Gun Des got his game plan spot-on at Wembley and Murphy gave his boss a ringing endorsement, saying: “We’ll have to see what happens, but I would love to be in these colours next year. “I’m buzzing for the gaffer because it’s been an up-anddown time since he came in. He’s a brilliant coach and I’m happy that he got what he deserved.” murphy’s awe Josh’s double (below) ensured Oxford will be in the Championship bolton 0 oxford united 2 LEAGUE ONE, PLAY-OFF FINAL Fans are seeing double with Murphy again as his strikes send Oxford up by MIKE WALTERS JOSH MURPHY went to Oxford United’s fancy dress Christmas party as his identical twin, Jacob, in a full Newcastle kit. And when the brothers played together at Norwich, manager Chris Hughton asked them to wear different colour boots so he could tell them apart. But everybody knows which one is which now after feeble Bolton were sunk by two-goal Murphy’s law at Wembley. Jacob’s twinkling feet are lighting up the dance floor on Tyneside – and Josh is king of the dreaming spires after his brilliant display restored Oxford to the Championship after a 25-year absence. Still in his playing kit two-anda-half hours after the final whistle, clutching champagne and the League One play-off trophy draped in yellow ribbons, Murphy laughed at the memory of Hughton’s footwear solution. He said: “It’s a good feeling to make a name for myself in a Wembley final.
