Not everyone wants or needs a full-size e-bike to getto work on, and that’s where smaller models like this one come in. Raleigh has managed to squeeze a decent carrying capacity and overall enjoyable ride into the utility-focused Modum, a 20in-wheeled powerful urban steed. Although it doesn’tfold away, the Modum is ideal forthosewho don’t have a great deal of storage space, or perhaps just don’t want to contend with a bigger bike. There’s a built-in rear MIKrack that can hold up to 27kg–that’s a lot of shopping. And the factthat it’s MIK means there are plenty of accessories that work nicely with it, including the Basil dog basket. Woof! Is it any good? Despite a short wheelbase and little wheels, this is still a very decent bike. Ittakes the best of both worlds, mixing the capacity and presence of a larger e-bike with the agility of a smaller one. We also like the idea oflow-maintenance hub gears on an e-commuter ofthis type. The Modum is another Bosch-powered e-bike, so it’s mid-drive powerthat will help you conquerthe steepest of city inclines without breaking a sweat. And with a 500Wh battery, you’ll get a lot of climbing miles in without having to worry about charging it up. For a more accurate estimate you can use the Bosch range calculator, but a conservative guess of 70 miles from Raleigh is doable from our experience. There’s only one size, but Raleigh reckons it’s a good fitfor anyone between5ft 2in and 6ft 2in as a guide. So if you’ve gotlots to carry to work, or even just want something you can also nip to the shops on,the Modum is worth a look. £3399/go.stuff.tv/Modum Keyspecs Bosch Performance Line motor O 500Wh battery, up to 70 miles O 25.6kg What’s the story? There’s a myth that a good commuter bike, electric or not, has to be some sort of knackered old lump. That it should be chosen purely for durability, and notfor enjoyment. The BMC 257 Amp turns thatidea on its head, putting performance and luxury to the fore. People drive to work in £60,000 cars, so why can’t cyclists choose something a bit more high-end to get to the office on? With bold mudguards and a high-end mid-drive motor, courtesy of Bosch, it’s gotthe looks and the power–and it’s also gotthe high-quality feel. Is it any good? The handling is second to none, providing effortless turning through standstill traffic. You feel like you’re almost gliding when the motor kicks in–it’s almost seamless–and even at the top end, riding overthe electric speed limiter, it’s smooth and easy. If you’re after a bit of luxury on your commute, this is a fine option. The mudguards offer excellent splash coverage, and the minimalistrearrack mounts directlyonto the mudguard… though this does mean it can be difficultto get some pannier bags to fit, which is worth bearing in mind if you sometimes carry more than just a packed lunch. This e-bike is made by a performance-orientated bicycle brand so there is a little harshness to the ride, butthe seating position is comfortable so itlends itselfto longer commutes in and out ofthe city. GROUP TEST E-BI K ES 66 What’s the story? Car manufacturers haven’ttaken over the bike world (yet), butthe terminology is slowly but surely creeping in. In the case ofthe Specialized Turbo TeroX, we mean ‘SUV’.And to be honest, this is probably more of a sports utility vehicle than most cars with that moniker: it’s fast, fun, and capable of handling whatever you want to throw atit. Atfirst glance the TeroXlooks like a somewhat confused mountain bike, with suspension front and rear and a geometry designed to absorb the bumps on rocky descents. Forthis reason it might seem like overkillfor pootling along to the office every day, butit’s hard to deny the fun factor–and the capability ofthis rugged machine. It’s fitted with allthe commuting essentials: mudguards, a rearrack (which can only carry panniers, not a rack bag on the top), a kickstand, lights, and even a dropper post. The 6.0 model we tested is powered by Specialized’s own 2.2 mid-drive motor, with a 710Wh battery. The stated range of 75 miles is aboutright, but underthe right circumstances 100 miles is doable. Is it any good? It mightindeed be a bit overkillfor a single type ofriding. Butif you’ve got deep enough pockets, and youwant something to have fun on atthe weekends as well as getting you to and from work, then it’s well worth considering. The Specialized 2.2 motoris renowned forits responsiveness and power, and we found ittackled some seriously steep Yorkshire climbs with relative ease. Stick it on the highest assistlevel and whizz past everyone else–and confuse car drivers about your apparently staggering fitness levels in the process. Practicality-wise, it can tow a trailer, so you can also use itto ferry the kids or dogs around. You’ve gotroom for two pannier bags on the rearrack, and plenty of style to make your workmates jealouswhen you roll in on your beefed-up super e-bike. There are two frame options to choose from – mid-step and step-over–so there’s more accessibility here than in most e-bikes.At over18kg it’s no racer, but we were impressed with how light itfelt compared to some other, more cumbersome e-commuters.Quite aside from the unassisted ride, this means it’s easierto stick on a train if you have a multi-modal commute, or even to carry up some stairs if you need to. It’s powered by Fazua’sRide 60 drive system, which is one ofthe lightest mid-drive motors on the market. Paired with a 430Wh battery, it means you’re good to go for several days of commutes between top-ups. Canyon has kept the cockpit nice and clean on this one, choosing to use handlebar-mounted controls forthe motor, with nothing else to clutter up the space. Is it any good? We really enjoyed the handling ofthe Commuter:ON7, even when two pannier bags were fully loaded on the back. It also comes with some super-slinky integrated lights, so you don’t need to worry about not being seen after dark; and this bike has a ShimanoDeore groupset–nottop ofthe range by any means, butthat’s not necessarily something you wantin a bike that’s going to see a lot of mileage (and potentially a lot of stereotypically hostile British weather). TheCommuter:ON7 isn’t going to break the bank, and it’s pretty much ready to ride out ofthe box. It has mudguards, a rearrack, lights and Schwalbe G-One Allround 40mm tyres to keep you out oftrouble in winter. GROUP TEST E-BI K ES 68 What’s the story? British brand Temple Cycles has been making gorgeous bikes in Bristol since 2014, primarily ofthe steel variety. But now they’ve turned their hand to the world of electric bikes, and they haven’t disappointed. When you’ve ridden a few e-bikes, you can tell when a brand has taken its time and notjustrushed into attaching their name to a template and running with it. The newTemple Electric sub-brand has justtwo bikes in its repertoire, the Step Through and the Classic. The frames differ, obviously, butthey’re the same in terms of components. We tested the Step Through model, which is best suited to smallerriders. This elegant machine is powered by a Bafang M420 mid-drive motor, which provides up to 80Nm oftorque. For most of us that’s likely to be overkill, butforthe few who live in hilly cities and really want to make the most of what an e-bike can offer–as an alternative to coming home each night with burning thighs–itlooks potentially ideal. Is it any good? The motoris the real standout component on this bike. It’s operated by a torque sensor andwe did notice it could be almost too eager–so be sure to press the pedal lightly if you’re stood waiting forthe light to turn green. The 504Wh removable battery sits in the downtube, offering plenty ofrange: we found it very impressive, even dealing with over100ft of climbing per mile and not seeming to struggle. The ride quality is good and the bars are nice and wide, so provide some stability without being too relaxed. The Temple Step Through makes an excellent urban companion for sure, with mudguards, integrated lights and a 9-speed drivetrain… butit would be even betterifit camewith a rearrack. Still, that’s notto say we wouldn’t recommend itfor commuting–just that not every e-bike is perfectly equipped right out ofthe box. GROUP TEST E-BI K ES 69 What’s the story? Ribble Cycles firstfound fans with its extensive custom build options, and now the longstanding British brand is seeing wider success by embracing electrification. The UrbanAL e is a consequence ofthis investmentinto e-bikes–and although it hasn’t been updated in a while, it’s still a popular urban all-rounder. It comes with front and rearracks, so you have plenty of options for carrying shopping orlaptops and other work bits. The geometry lends itselfto an upright riding style, butfor shortertrips through town this is ideal and we found itto be a comfortable ride. Ribble has equipped theUrbanAL e with a 1000-lumen headlight up front and a 50-lumen light on the rear. The powered assistance comes courtesy of a Mahle SmartBike SystemsX35+ rear hub motor and a 250Wh battery hidden in the downtube. It’s notremovable, so we’d recommend storing this bike somewhere secure to avoid raising the eyebrows of potentialthieves. Is it any good? Designed to be the ultimate urban riding companion, but with a bit of extra boost, theUrbanAL e has a lotto offerfor not a great deal of money (by the standards of e-bikes,thatis). We were impressed by the accessibility ofthis bike, and the ease of use ofthat Mahle system. The benefit of a hub drive motoris thatthe overall bike is generally lighterthan a mid-drive equivalent, and that’s the case here: at17.5kg forthe medium size, the Ribble is the lightest bike in this group test. We also like how ready itis to take to the streets: it has mudguards, a kickstand, plenty of carrying space and a workhorse SRAM 11-speed drivetrain to keep you going all yearround. That makes most hills doable, though the hub motor works best on inclines below 15% or so. 72 DIGITALMEMORIES Q Don’t miss the moment Recording moments to relive later shouldn’t getin the way of experiencing them. With planned events, ideally set up a camera in advance and use a tripod. If circumstances don’t allow it, or you want sporadic snaps, learn to shoot without having a phone or camera glued to yourface. Q Getthe balance right Try to make high-quality captures that are futureproof, and shoot stable video. Leaving augmented and mixed reality to the MetaQuest3 headset, the focus here has been on better picture quality, clearer sound and longer battery life… while chucking livestreaming into the mix. The iconic Wayfarer style is almost effortlessly cool. I can’t quite pullthem offin the same way that movie stars do, butthe thick frames and rounded curves will suit a range offace shapes. 78 TESTED GAMES iscounting theDIY-tastic Super Mario Maker and the mobile-only Super Mario Run, it’s been 11 years since the world’s most beloved plumber has returned to his side-scrolling roots for an all-new 2Dadventure. So Super Mario Bros Wonder is a bit of a big deal. It starts as most good Mario games do, with Bowser spoiling a perfectly pleasant day by stealing a magical Wonder Flower… and, as usual, itfalls to the mustachioed handyman to stop his nemesis from doing evil business with it. Wonder is completely crammed with weird and wonderful ideas, notleast a load of new power-ups, including one thattransforms your characterinto a trunk-flipping, butt-stomping elephant. In any other game Elephant Mario would be the main attraction, but here it’s justthe starter. Every level in the game has a hidden Wonder Flowerthat, when touched, will often dramatically alterthings in some grin-inducing way. Expect perspective-flipping obstacle courses, zero gravity, chaotic musical numbers and all manner of chase sequences. These little sugarrushes are the heart and soul ofWonder, so if you miss one you’ll be going straight back in to find it. As you make your way through the Flower Kingdom’s six distinct worlds and battle their various enemies, you also unlock a series of badges that give Mario a special ability or perk, such as being able to parachute down using his cap or bounce back out of a pit after a badly timed jump. You can only use one at a time, and because they change how you play each levelthey’ll keep you coming back over and over again. Mario’s trippiest, strangest and funniest outing yetis everything a 2Dplatform game should be in 2023, blending masterful level design with true unpredictability… and the chance to be an elephant. 80 TESTED GAMES ack in the early 1990s, Sega’s tagline was ‘To be this good takes ages’ (‘ages’ being Sega backwards, geddit?). Today, it could easily apply to how long it’s been since there was a fully new Sonic game worth playing. Superstars takes side-scrolling platforming as its foundation and instantly transports you back to the familiarfeel ofthe MegaDrive era.Diehard fans may miss the original pixel art butits 3Dvisuals do a greatjob of emulating the classic animations, including theway your characterwill start wobbling when standing on the edge of a platform. Its setting ofNorthstarIslands is splitinto zones thatrecall elements of past adventures–green hills, underwater sections, floating sky fortresses–and many have interesting gimmicks, whetherit’s riding vines in Speed Jungle Zone or being turned into voxel-formed creatures in Cyber Station Zone. Collecting emeralds will also grant you new powers, such as making clones of yourselfthat charge across the screen to attack enemies, although many don’t feel meaningfully integrated or have very limited use. While Superstars nails the core of what made the original games so good, not everything is so successful. The worst offenders are bosses, which have some cleverly designed attack patterns but can drag outthrough multiple phases, with no checkpoints in between. Four-playerlocal co-op is passable in a casual scenario but a group of serious fans willfind it frustrating, while the multiplayer mech-based mini-games in Battle Mode justfeeltoo throwaway–so the main replay value comes from approaching the single-player acts from a differentroute or as another character, with Tails, Knuckles and Amy allfeeling different enough to warrant a spin. Sonic Superstars takes the high-speed hedgehog’s 16-bit era as a basis for a properly modern successor; and while the hits are mixed up with misses, fans willfeel it’s been worth the wait. DON’T MISS THE NEXT ISSUE! ON SALE 22 DEC tlast, the venerable low-cost Android blower! But whatever happened to MotosAto F? Weirdly, theG came afterthe pricierXand before the dirt-cheap E. You wondered whether Motorola (then owned byGoogle) would randomly work its way through the entire alphabet, before settling on a Moto Y cheap enough to go inside a Christmas cracker.TheGwas a cunning play forfirst-time buyers in emerging markets… but ended up tempting peopleworldwide into finally ditching old-school mobiles because it offered such astonishing bang per buck. So the G stands for‘Great’? ‘Groovy’? ‘Golden’? ‘Glad to have itin my mitts’? Or‘Google’s glorious global gleaming gadget’. Probably one ofthose. They never said. We did getthe boasty slogan ‘Exceptional phone, exceptional price’– which was fair enough for a £135 blowerthat had a bright display protected byGorilla Glass, a snappy CPU, and vivid interchangeable back covers that whiffed of classicNokias. That said, it wasn’t all glowing goodness, as more discerning owners discovered on using theG’s mediocre camera orfinding its 8GB storage tight once they’d loaded up their music collection. So the G really stands for‘Google got your hopes up and cruelly dashed them’? More like ‘Good enough’. There were certainly compromises, and the case resembled the MotoX’swith the ‘encheapify’ setting ramped up to full. ButtheGblew away anything in its price range, which then included FirefoxOS phones that still give us nightterrors today. And flaws were swiftly addressed–although successor devices slowly losttheirlead in whatinevitably became a race to the bottom. Now the range is loved more by thrifty users than by makerswho feelforced to churn out cheapAndroid blowers for no profit.
