Background knowledge of speed skating 1 Steven Bradbury

This was the first ever Winter Olympic medal for Australia ever. He needed pins and bolts in his skull, back and chest. Later Bradbury was told

champion and home favourite, Apollo Anton Ohno.

Placed 3rd, it was not enough to qualify for the final. Bradbury thought his Olympic dreams
were over. However, the 2nd place skater was disqualified so Bradbury went through to the final.

The Final panned out to be uneventful for Bradbury and he was in last position the entire time.
But a few meters from the finish line, the Korean skater slipped and all four of the other racers
fell over him. This left the path clear for Steven Bradbury to snatch gold!

Steven Bradbury was very brave and endeavoured to do
what he had wanted to do his entire life. He did not let a
broken neck or another close-call with death get in the
way of his dream. He is a great role model and he shows
that as long as you keep at something, even if all the odds
are against you, you can always succeed.
