In this new project, boys were encouraged
to draw a face from an unusual perspective,

such as images of people seen through a
security webcam, who may be looking up at
an odd angle or downwards, perhaps unaware

of being monitored. The use of contrast
and shading in drawing was emphasised, to
highlight the black and white shadowy quality

of some such webcam images.

LANDSCAPE

After consideration of work by a range of
landscapists, from contemporary Hockney
to post-impressionist Van Gogh, Year 5s used
a simple pencil and sketchbook, or an ipad
to make observational representations of the
outdoor spaces they could see in the local

STEAM PUNK

Steampunk stems from science fiction relating to 19th-century
societies dominated by historical or imagined steam-powered
technology. The clothing from these eras is often modernized by the
addition of mechanical elements with gears showing and goggles
feature in the world of steampunk, serving to keep the wind on an
airship from drying out eyes and protection from sparks, and hot
steam in the lab or boiler room. Year 6s experimented with tonal
drawing using charcoal and ink, sculpture and Photoshop, looking at

the work of the Steampunk artists and Leonardo da Vinci.

PORTRAITURE AND WAR

In this unit of work Year Nobuki Smolders
8 boys looked at the work
of Francis Bacon and the Fred Smith
German Expressionist artists
to understand how these artists
drew inspiration from their
religious and political beliefs.
The project started off with
students producing distorted
portraits that reflected the main
characteristics of Bacon’s work,
using both photomontage and
Photoshop, before going on to
acquire the techniques involved in
printing with lino, along the lines
of several German Expressionist
woodcuts. To round off the project
Year 8s completed an independent
study on the topic of Distortion
and War with the focus of creating
an image or poster for the

Stop War Coalition.

Drama

the exam

Year 8 Drama Production July 2021

DESPITE THE ONGOING CHALLENGES POSED BY COVID
RESTRICTIONS AND LOCKDOWNS, AT THE BEGINNING OF
JULY, THE YEAR 8 CAST AND STAGE MANAGEMENT TEAM, DIRECTED
BY MR PADDEN, WERE FINALLY ABLE TO PRESENT TO THEIR
PARENTS A SENSITIVE AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING PERFORMANCE
OF THE EXAM.

The Exam, written by award-winning author
Andy Hamiliton (the comedic genius
behind British TV comedies “Drop the
Dead Donkey” and “Outnumbered”, and Radio
Show comedies such as “Old Harry's Game”), is
a funny but serious look at the pressures faced
by students today, both at school and at home.
It is a shrewd perspective on a familiar
experience, one which most people generally
remember as being amongst the most
emotionally-charged and nerve-racking
occasions of our lives.

60

Andrew, Chas and Bea are three candidates of mixed
ability who find themselves imprisoned together in
the same exam hall waiting for their papers to arrive:
Chas, a popular yet chaotic underachiever, who
invents his own slang (the word ‘prossock’ has since
become a familiar label heard around our senior school
corridors!); Bea, nicknamed “Two-Brains”, constrained
by other people’s expectations of her intellect and
Andrew, a feverish worrier, who has already begun to
think and talk like a middle-aged man, complete with
ulcer. In waiting for the delayed start of the exam,

each student has to begin to come to terms with
themselves, their peers and parents. As the wait
lengthens, each faces a powerful bombardment
of self doubt, parental pressure and adult
incompetence – provoked and enhanced by ’Ex’,
the mysterious, disembodied voice of the exam.
The Hall socially-distanced parents and
teachers, brought together as audiences for
three performances staged in the Wathen Hall,
were transported inexorably back to our own
memories of exams, reliving our own anxiety
and knotted stomach as the minutes ticked by
and all that was to be heard was the lonely sound
of everyone else’s pen scratching on the paper.
Amongst the Year 8 boys’ performances were
flashes of razor-sharp insight as well as hilarity,
as the players brought to life characterisations
of every school’s supposed ‘elders and betters’;
the young actors brought before our adult gaze
astute snapshots of the sometimes disastrous,
hurtful and at times pitiful parenting and
teaching behaviours that even well-intentioned

teachers and loving parents occasionally display, all in
the name of education and ‘wanting the best’ for the next
generation.
Huge thanks go to Mr Padden for bringing out the
best from each and every member of the cast and stage
management team and to the boys themselves for
presenting us with such an engaging evening of drama.

LOCKDOWN DIDN'T STOP PRACTICAL WORK AND DETERMINATION
IN DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY OVER THE SPRING AND SUMMER...

New FROM Old

Several members of the DT Club (Will Samuels,
Timothy Scannell, Felix Twinning, Finlay

Schelin and Felix Rotte) helped Miss Downing
to design and make a new sign in the DT

department that showcased letters made from
tools and materials that were all scrap or waste.

Miss Downing made a video of the work and
tweeted it – the tweet proved very popular with
200 likes and retweets from Instructables and
the DT Association. This resulted in the D&T

Association requesting an article explaining
the innovative design and creation process
involved in producing the eye-catching new
sign with some images of the boys forming

YEAR 4 PROJECTS

Bridge CHALLENGE

A bridge challenge proved tricky but fun; Year 4 boys worked
in small groups to engineer a model bridge that could span

from one island to another. The aim of the task was to
produce the bridge that was able to bear the most weight. In
a close and exciting finale, a test to destruction determined

overall form winners of the STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths) challenge.

Rocket PROJECT

In Year 4 boys utilised science, technology, and maths to generate
a range of rocket designs. They experimented and tested a
range of variables to produce the best aesthetic design and

the optimum aerodynamic rocket. The rocket project really took
off (!), with a competition between Year 4 forms to discover which

rocket projected the furthest distance. The group of winning
boys received a 3D printed rocket from the DT department.

66

Packaging
PROJECT

The Year 4s took on a packaging project, in which
they designed their own brand vision, logo, slogan,

character, and packaging for a new delicious
cereal. They designed and manufactured the
packaging using a range of soft materials. The final
products look bright, colourful, very aesthetically

pleasing, and professional!

The goalposts moved onto the pristine pitch, the cones
carefully positioned to hold back an exuberant crowd of
Junior School children, and teachers looking on from the
‘executive box seats’ in the Staff Room. The stage was set for the
Junior School Euro 2020 Football Tournament.

Fever pitch had hit the School as soon as the official Euro 2020
Tournament kicked off in June. Mr Dobson and I decided to host
our very own Junior School competition. Reception and Year 1 had
their own Tournament, as did the boys in Years 2 and 3. Across 16
different European nations, every single boy took part and took
pride in representing their allocated team and Country.

As the majority of the boys here show a keen interest in
the sport, the standard was high and this made for some
interesting, competitive, matches. England against Switzerland was
the opening fixture, and faster than Brexit, England were knocked
out of BOTH tournaments. A dramatic start to the competition,
with so much still at stake and plenty of fixtures to get through.
Eventually, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal and Croatia progressed
to the Semi Finals. In front of an electric crowd, sporting colourful
banners of support, the two games were played in great spirit.

Spain and Portugal were the two teams to advance from the
last four, and they played out a tight, tense Final. An impressive
display saw Portugal crowned champions of Europe, as the
Tournament came to a close. Huge credit to all the boys in the
Junior School, they all played with a high intensity and positive
team spirit. The School’s sporting future is bright; there may
even be a few young Lions in the making, among us.

Football really did come home this Summer, in the Junior
School.

By Noam Boucard and Will ?
2021 Annual Hall Dads vs Staff cricket match
There are 4 positions in cricket. The batter, the bowler, the wicket
keeper, and the fielder. The batter must hit the ball that the bowler
bowls. If he hits it out of the boundaries with one or more bounces,
he gets four points for his team. If the batter hits it out of the
boundaries with zero bounces, he gets six points for his team. If
the ball does not go out of the boundaries, the batters must run
to the opposite wicket and every time they both run once to the
other wicket, they get one run. They do not run if the ball goes out
of the boundaries, and they get the runs they get when it goes out
the boundaries.

THE BOWLER AND WICKET KEEPER
The bowler must bowl the ball with a straight arm, and he needs
to try hit the wicket with the ball. If he does, the batting team loses
three points. The wicket keeper must make sure the ball does not
go backwards through the boundaries. They are also there to make
the ball touch the wicket when the batter is still running and is not
around the wicket. If that happens, the batting team loses three
points.

THE FIELDER
The fielder must pass the ball to someone who will make the ball
touch the wicket. All the fielders are spread in the field to make
sure the ball does not go out of the boundaries. If a fielder catches
the ball with zero bounces the batting team loses 3 points.

EXTRA INFORMATION
Both teams take turn batting, bowling, and fielding. When you
bowl your teammates are fielding. Each team starts on 100 points.
One team is batting, and the other team is bowling and fielding.

RULES
By Dylan Shorthouse

The bowler tries to bowl the ball at the wicket.
If you hit the wicket the batting team loses 3 runs.
If the batter hits the ball they have a choice to stay or to run to the
other wicket.
If a fielder throws the ball at the wicket while the batters are
running they lose 3 runs. Also, if a fielder catches the ball with no
bounce straight off the bats boys bat you lose three runs.
If the ball bounces and then go past the flags that is four runs for
the bats boy and if it doesn’t bounce that is six runs.
