PREFACE

Prof. Dr. Árpád Kovács – ‘Competition and performance pressure whether we
Chairman of the Fiscal Council like it or not, affect our lives. Important factors such
of Hungary as the quality of culture, modernization and education
act as a deposit for the future of the economy’s
competitiveness. Against this background the
constant and offensive ability to adapt to change is
aided and facilitated through life-long learning.

It is worth noting that the appraisal systems of business
schools similar to WBS place greater emphasis on
practical knowledge and the students ability to develop
their careers than larger universities where theoretical
and scientific research is the main factor influencing
institution prestige. I am convinced that WBS bears
the Wekerle name with the dignity, pride and respect
worthy of its eponym.

The institute with its European recognized degrees
and cutting-edge training programmes has proven
that is more than capable of tackling and answering
those educational challenges arising from todays
modern economy.’

3

INTRODUCING Wekerle Business School - as a prestigious
OUR INSTITUTION educational institution - considers its mission
to provide outstanding education within the
Bologna system. Its aim is to create conditions
for education that enhance the students’
academic and personal development by
uniting high-level academic knowledge with
practical education, based on corporate
partnerships from outside the institution.
In today’s globalized world, only by having
a highly professional and open-minded
education that incorporates a strong sense
of ethics and responsibility can one remain
competitive.

A WBS education while successfully
integrating various cultures enables its
students to rise to new challenges anywhere
in the world, thus helping them to fulfil their
true potential.

4

WBS considers it a number one priority that the students and staff, regardless of age or
background, ethnical or otherwise, are encouraged to embark upon a voyage of life-
long learning and self development through study, research and academic endeavour.

This will lead to an improvement in the quality of life while contributing to the training of a
more flexible and better prepared labour force. It is our firm conviction that the structure
of our programmes should be practice-oriented, and based on work experience, as
well as carefully designed case studies, that reflect market realities. This contributes to
the development of our students’ problem-solving, communicational and presentational
skills as well as to the heightening of their preparedness for employment.

Through the contribution of our services and our active participation in the national
scientific and academic life WBS enjoys the confidence and acknowledgement of the
local society and wider public. We consider this to be of the utmost importance and
value it highly. Against this background we will continue to be a positive cultural and
intellectual force in the community at large. We are proud of our philosophy that conceives
education as a complex service. Our student-oriented approach can be experienced
in a pleasant educational and student-life-enriched environment with cutting-edge
technology, while an outstanding and highly acknowledged teaching staff uses
up-to-date methodologies and quality course material.

The final aim of the school is to train future leaders while endowing them with the thirst for
knowledge and inspiring them to strive for professional and human excellence.

5

RECTOR’S WELCOME

6

Imre Balogh PhD – ‘In line with the mission of WBS our goal is to assist our
Acting Rector of WBS, college students in becoming critical thinkers and committed
professor intellectuals within the framework of a professional,
streamlined, yet student-friendly educational system,
using the teaching methods of the 21st century.

The word ‘Business’ in the name of our school is of vital
importance as it means that our programmes have a
particular focus on the development of up-to-date and
ready-to-use business skills. We strive for providing our
students with tailor-made assistance in starting and
building their careers. We are convinced that quality
education thrives in an international environment, thus
we are determined to admit a gradually increasing
number of international students.

Our management and staff do their best to create the
conditions for ‘comprehensive college experience’,
i.e. besides the up-to-date knowledge based on the
latest scientific findings, we offer an inspiring learning
environment and a variety of social events for our
students.

I trust that you, whether a present or future student
of ours, will benefit from the achievements of our
institution while contributing to our mutual success
through your own drive, enthusiasm and original
approach.’

BUDAPEST

8

Budapest is cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with its extensive World Heritage
Sites including the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes’
Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, which is the second oldest in the world.
Other highlights include a total of 80 geothermal springs, the world’s largest thermal water cave
system, and the third largest Parliament building. The city attracts about 4.3 million tourists a year,
making it the sixth most popular city in Europe according to Euromonitor. This beautiful historical
capital is situated on the banks of the Danube and is called the pearl of the Danube. The city
actually consists of three cities: Óbuda with Celtic and Roman ruins, Buda in the hills on the Western
bank, famous for its historic Castle Hill and beautiful residential area, and Pest with its shopping,
government and commercial districts on the flat plain of the Eastern bank.
The architectural beauty with monuments ranging from neoclassic, baroque to eclectic art nouveau
is prevalent in the city. Budapest is also world famous for its abundance of concerts, operas, recitals,
galas and exhibitions. You can find all cuisine in Hungary. There are a lot of Chinese, Turkish, Iranian,
Greek, Italian, Indian and Japanese restaurants and buffets as well as fast food chains in Budapest.
Certainly, as all European cities, Budapest has many cafés and teahouses, ranging from classical
to modern ones, as well as art cafés.
A new type of entertainment centres of social life for young people studying in Budapest are the
‘ruin pubs’, which are unique in the world. They have developed along the trends of European art.
They are centres for open-mindedness to other cultures and networking, where you can meet
friendly and helpful people.

Hungary is a country in Central Europe. It is a member of the European Union and the Schengen
Borderless Europe Agreement. The country offers many diverse destinations: relatively low
mountains in the north-west, great plains in the east, lakes and rivers of all sorts (including
Balaton - the largest lake in Central Europe), along with many beautiful small villages (Hollókő,
Villány, Szentendre, Nagycenk, etc.) and hidden gems of cities. Top this off with Hungary’s great
accessibility in the middle of Europe, a vivid culture and economy, and you will get a destination
of your dreams.

Hungary is one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world, with a capital regarded as
one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Despite its relatively small size, the country is home to
numerous World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Biosphere reserves, the second largest thermal lake in
the world (Lake Hévíz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural
grassland in Europe (Hortobágy). In terms of buildings, Hungary is home to the largest synagogue
in Europe (Great Synagogue), the largest medicinal bath in Europe (Széchenyi Medicinal Bath),
the third largest church in Europe (Esztergom Basilica), the second largest territorial abbey in the
world (Pannonhalma Archabbey), the second largest Baroque castle in the world (Gödöllő), and
the largest Early Christian Necropolis outside Italy (Pécs). You can expect to find delicious food
and fantastic wines, good safety and a stable political climate as well as friendly people.

Hungary has been ethnically diverse since its inception, and while today over 90% of the population
are ethnically Hungarian, pockets of ethnic and cultural Slovaks, Romanians, Germans and others
dot the country. Due to the border changes of Hungary after World War I, over 5 million ethnic and
cultural Hungarians live in bordering countries. The Hungarians, otherwise known as Magyars,
are the descendants of several tribes from Central Asia, who were believed to be fierce, nomadic
horsemen and came to Central Europe in the 9th century.

’Being a student in Wekerle Business School is a great pleasure for
me, not only because here I am always learning new subjects, but
also because I am in a very inspiring international environment. The
academic staff is professional with very up-to-date knowledge, and are
always available, thus helping the students to learn more successfully.
In fact, I joined the BA program in Commerce and Marketing with
some work experience, but I can say that the skills and knowledge that
I have gained here are practical as well as relevant and have helped
me better understand the reality of commerce in our globalized world.
I definitely recommend the program to every person who is eager to
improve him/herself in this area.’ - Sem, BA student
