2017

Writing my first yearbook message for AISL, I do so in a reflective manner. For sure, the first year in a new school and country, alongside a global pandemic, all masked up, was no easy feat. But difficult though it was to be in person with much of the community initially, you welcomed Mike and me with open arms (sometimes virtual) and we are delighted to be here. The year began on a virtual platform but after a very short period of time, the school was so fortunate to be fully open and, aside from everyone wearing masks and remaining in socially-distanced pods, the campus looked ’normal’. Despite the disappointment of the spike in December, with further disappointment for many families of not being able to travel home again, the new year began with optimistic fervor. In the second semester, we mindfully eased up on COVID restrictions. In part, this was possible because most of our community became fully vaccinated. Masks outside came off, more parents came on campus, and the facilities were in full use, with traditions like the Friday Market returning. Wonderful to witness. This year also saw our re-accreditation team visit following the Self Study from the year before. It turned out that AISL was the first school to experience a hybrid visit and it was significant that we had two Team Leaders from CIS and MSA on campus to see what our school was truly like in action. Their recommendations, along with my SOAR Analysis with the entire community, will frame our next level of strategy as we frame learning around “Imagine If…”. There is much Board work to be done around this and we intend to continue to be inclusive of all our stakeholders in the process. The AISL School Board have been exceptionally supportive this year and we have spent many hours behind the scenes learning and listening together to ensure their fiduciary, strategic, and generative responsibility. The Board continues to make these areas a focus, as AISL prepares to be fit for the exponentially changing future. There has been deep, impactful, and ongoing dialogue on this. And on learning, I have been particularly impressed with the approach and attitude of our learners. From the very beginning, they have been friendly, greeting me daily as they arrive on this beautiful campus. This has meant a lot. They have also produced some incredible projects throughout the year, demonstrating collaboration and creativity, two core competencies for their future careers. Of course, this learning could not be at the level it is without the dedication and passion of our teachers, who daily do their very best to ensure ‘Every Student Thrives’. It would be remiss not to mention the incredible achievement of our primary principal, Ms. Darlene Huson, for winning the National Distinguished Principal award for 2022. This is a wonderful honor and great for AISL’s reputation on the African continent and globally. Congratulations to Darlene! Another huge strength of AISL is the role of the PTA and their ability to involve the entire community at events such as Trunk n Treat, WorldFest, and Teacher Appreciation was impressive. The amount of time, effort and end result of this were simply amazing. Thank you all so very much. To our seniors, I wish you all the very best and trust that AISL has prepared you well for the future, not only academically but as balanced and caring individuals who truly want to be impactful in our world. To all our leaving families, I hope you have enjoyed your AISL experience and your time in Zambia and that this Yearbook will provide you with long-lasting memories. And on that note, this Yearbook would simply not have been possible without the hard work, dedication, and organization of Janke Lindeque. Not only did she tirelessly take photos on all occasions throughout the year, but she put the book together. Thank you!! Along with Janke next year, we are hoping for students to take the lead in developing their Yearbook, as it is a unique learning experience that develops many life skills as well as being good fun! Here's hoping that next year will be one of a truly open and welcoming campus once again and that we can all mix more socially and intentionally to build an even stronger learning community. Finally, Gooooooooooooo Leopards. Message from the Director Dr. Oli Tooher-Hancock

The 2021-2022 academic year has brought our school community a new sense of hope. Though we continue to live in very fluid times, we have come a long way in how we navigate and manage the challenges happening around the globe. We have been grateful to have had the opportunity to bring back our Celebrations of Learning, performing arts assemblies, mixed-age play at break times and collaborative peer projects, to name a few. It has felt wonderful being together again as a community. Our Grade 5 students remind us that, if we all do our part and take responsibility, “our everyday choices and actions can help us understand the world and make it a better place”. This yearbook is a celebration of the rich learning, caring relationships, personal memories, and events that have made this year special. As the Primary Principal, I can find so many reasons to be proud of what our students have learned, shared, and aspired to this year. As an IB School, our students have continued to question and reflect as inquirers, thinkers, and risk-takers. They have made principled choices and cared for one another. They have approached new ideas with an open-mind and have let their curiosities take them in new directions. Our students have raised awareness about issues that impact our school, our local community, and our world. From our youngest learners to our eldest, each child has reflected on how to take meaningful action in hopes of creating a better future. Though this year has brought back more hope, smiles and laughter, we must also take time to remember our dear colleague, Charity Sishuwa, who passed away last September after working at AISL for almost twenty years. She was a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend to all those around her. She will always be remembered for her warm smile, kind heart, and gentle nature. Whether you are a family who will be returning to AISL for the next school year or are a family moving on to a new destination, know that it has been a pleasure working together with you this year. I hope this yearbook will be a wonderful memoir for you and your child. Sincerely, Darlene Huson Message from the Primary Principal Darlene Huson

In loving memory of Charity Sishuwa On behalf of our entire AISL community, we wish to express that we will miss Charity dearly both as a colleague and a friend. Charity has been part of our Primary teaching team for almost 20 years, having touched the lives of hundreds of children, parents, and colleagues. As an international school community, the impact of her loss will not only be felt here in Zambia, but also around the world. Though we are all filled with sadness , as I wrote these words, I was reminded of the joyful memories we have of Charity and would like this tribute to be a celebration of her life. With this in mind, I would like to share a poem called “Your Smile”: Though your smile is gone, And your hand we cannot touch We still have so many memories Of the one we loved so much. Your memory is our keepsake With which we will never part God has you in his keeping We have you in our hearts. It is sad to walk the road [without you] Instead of side by side. But to all there comes a moment When the ways of life divide. You gave us years of happiness Then came sorrow and tears, But you left us beautiful memories, We will treasure through the years. These words mark the spirit in which we wish to remember Charity and the amazing story her life has written. As a teacher, Charity was a guide, an advocate, and an inspiration for hundreds of children over the years. She was their cheerleader, their caregiver, and their listener. In the words of the young children who came to speak with me yesterday after learning of the news, they shared that they will forever remember her in the following ways: CARING: Charity will be remembered for her caring spirit. She loved each of her students and wished only the very best for every one of them. She listened closely to them and aimed to understand them, not only as her students, but as individuals. GENTLE: She will be remembered for her gentle nature. Her warm, bright smile brought comfort to those around her. She showed patienceattentiveness, and understanding in all of her interactions. FUN: They remembered how she laughed when they worked in a group with her. She embraced the joyful moments of learning and loved the work that she did each day with her students. COLORFUL: There were students who spoke to me yesterday about their memory of Charity’s beautifully colored dresses. These memories of brightness, beauty and color are metaphors of her vibrant energy that positively influenced those around her. Charity’s life was a life well lived, and expressed best through this poem: Remembering a life well lived begins with stories of love and challenges accomplishments and achievements, But the most important thing about a life well lived are those who shared it with you. We have all been so lucky to have had the chance to know Charity. The school - and the lives of her students and colleagues - are better because of her time with us. She will be deeply missed at AISL. All of these traits are how we will remember Charity in our hearts as we cel brate the story of her life. In this spirit, we owe it to her to go forward and embrace life in the same way that she has taught all of us to do.

PYPx The central idea for the Exhibition this year, as decided by our students, is: “Our everyday choices and actions can help us understand the world and make it a better place” We have inquired into the Sustainable Development Goals and why they are so important for the entire planet. Students have thought about how they can link their passions to the SDG’s and the central idea to generate potential topics for their own Exhibitions.
