ADVISOR COORDINATOR
SOUTHERN REGION
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
Greetings,
As the Advisor Coordinator for the Southern Region, my
responsibility is to provide support to the over 140 advisors that
serve on your campus and in our region. This support includes
but is not limited to addressing questions as they arise, providing
advice regarding advisor-collegiate relationships, sharing best
practices and tips for effective collegiate chapters,
understanding generational differences, and so much more!
Having served previously as a Regional Representative and now
as a chapter advisor, I understand firsthand the importance of having a support structure in
place. As we continue with this 2020-2021 school year and prepare for the one ahead,
please let me know if I can be of service in any way!
Tips for Strong Campus/Advisor Relationships
Over Communicate
Never assume that plans, policies, guidelines, et. are automatically understood. Be sure to
communicate such things to all chapter members, advisors, and appropriate campus
persons regularly and in a timely manner. Consider using multiple communication
platforms in an effort to appeal to the preferences of all (example: email, GroupMe, text,
newsletter, etc.).
Plan Effectively
Create and use a template for event/activity planning. The template should reflect the
required information for campus approval, facility usage, sorority components (committee
name, budget information, corresponding thrust, etc.), timeline, list of required resources,
execution timeline, committee/chapter member responsibilities, and advisor expectations.
Foster Relationships
Schedule a time each semester for the chapter leaders and advisors to meet with campus
officials (example: Director of Student Life, Office of Greek Affairs, etc.). During this
meeting share the chapter's plans for the semester and inquire about how the chapter
can best serve the campus and surrounding community.
Additionally, advisors should schedule a time to meet individually with collegiate members
at least once a year. During this "check-in" time, inquire about school, their experience in
the chapter, and see if there is a need for support. A little talk goes a long way!
