FOREWORD ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. NG SIEW FOEN DIRECTOR OF UMK INTERNATIONAL Greetings from UMK International! The first quarter of 2023 passed like a breeze. With the massive return of international students to UMK, the international office has experienced a huge number of students crowding the office for visa processing matters and enquiries. The increase in international students has indeed made a significant contribution to the personality of the institution and to its financial well-being. More importantly, enrolling international students from a wide range of countries and backgrounds has boosted the diversity of the campus and will hopefully produce culturally aware and well-rounded students. Having more international students also means having more opportunities to collaborate with our international partners. Between January and March, we assisted faculties in their mobility programs with partners from India and Indonesia. It was great to see students from these countries enjoying their interactions with UMK students as well as experiencing the local cultures and places. More discussions for potential mobility programs with China and Thailand are already in the pipeline.. The international road tour to the three campuses was another highlight of the first quarter worth mentioning. Meeting faculties and explaining the role of the international office helped to break through many barriers between the international office and the faculties. We hope this meeting will help to enhance internal cohesive collaborations and creative idea-sharing so that together we can bring UMK to another level. Let's move forward in togetherness! 2023- TESTIMONIALS UMK INTERNATIONAL Rani Rengganis Ma Xiaoyan
Rani Rengganis Hello, my name is Rani Rengganis. I come from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I study at the Faculty of Language Studies and Human Development, majoring in Psychology with concentrations in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and Sports Psychology. The best experience I’ve had here is being immersed in a new environment, improving my English skills, adapting to lecturers and international students from many countries around the world. Kelantan is almost like Yogyakarta, my hometown, but quieter with peaceful surroundings. There are many interesting places to explore and visit for students who need tranquility. Even though I feel at home, I can still concentrate on my dissertation, and the library provides a complete collection of books, great Wi-Fi facilities, and a very comfortable space to study. Besides that, the tuition fees is also affordable. One of the interesting things I have experienced about UMK is the UMK International Day which is held annually. During the event, all the students in UMK have the opportunity to present their culture, food, and introduce the traditions of their respective countries. In UMK, I get to know many international students. Through these students, I learn about their country without having to visit them directly. In addition, I feel very much at home here, because I get a lot of help from all the support systems such as UMK International team and CPS. It is my pleasure indeed to study here and UMK is always in my heart. PhD Faculty of Language Studies & Human Development Edition 1: January - March 2023 28
Hi there, my name is Ma Xiaoyan from China. I am currently a doctoral student in Visual Communication at the Faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage. I am in my first semester, and I am very excited to be one of the UMK students. I cannot wait to explore and learn new skills in my field of study. When I first arrived here, I was immediately struck by the beauty and peaceful surroundings in Bachok Campus because it has green space filled with trees and gardens. The building landscape is also impressive with a mix of historical and modern styles that gives the campus a unique design. The people here are just great, as is the surrounding. The lecturers are super friendly, approachable and caring towards their students. I have never had a problem in UMK because whenever I ask a favour or help, I am pleasantly surprised by how friendly and welcoming the staff and the people here especially those from UMK International Office. I absolutely love UMK, my campus. Thank you. Ma Xiaoyan PhD Faculty of Creative Technology & Heritage Culture Edition 1: January - March 2023 29
