Types of Renewable Energy

energy that is collected from resources
which are naturally replenished on a human

timescale.

There are 4 Main Types

They Will NEVER be Used Up...

WIND POWER

Energy from wind used to turn large blades
on wind turbines.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Work best in windy Many people think
places such as they are ugly
hilltops and
coastlines. Cause visual and
Don't produce noise pollution
atmospheric  If it is calm, no
emissions that electricity

cause greenhouse
 gases

How do they work?

Wind turbines are set on hilltops and
coastlines

-The wind blows
causing the three

propeller like
blades to spin.

-They are
connected to a
rotor and this spins
a generator to
make electricity.

Top Wind Energy States- 2012

1. Texas (1,826 MW)
2. California (1,656 MW)

3. Kansas (1,440 MW)
4. Oklahoma (1,127 MW)

5. Illinois (823 MW)
6. Iowa (814 MW)

7. Oregon (640 MW)
8. Michigan (611 MW)
9. Pennsylvania (550 MW)
10. Colorado (496 MW)

THE Solar World

Using light and heat from the sun as useful

energy

Solar Cells on a roof top.

Advantages

They are useful in sunny
places especially if a very
small amount of energy is
needed ex. watch or calculator

Disadvantages

Solar Panels are very expensive and a lot are needed
to generate enough electricity for it to be worthwhile.
They are only useful when it is sunny and the amount

of energy produced depends on the amount of
sunlight avaliable

How does it work?

Solar panels or individual solar cells are
purchased.

They can be mounted on rooftops in sunny
places or even on a special base in a yard.
They will work whenever the sun shines and
make electricity that can be consumed by

humans.

Solar Farms are
are becoming
more common
every day.

FUN FACT:

Solar power is used on Earth and in Space

Going Geothermal

Steam is produced underground because of radioactive
material in rocks and is piped to the surface to turn
turbines.

There are 3 Types of Geothermal
Plants:

-Dry Steam-Flash Steam-Binary Cycle

A breakdown of the procedure...

Water is heated and sent through a steam turbine
where the heat energy is converted to electricity

with a generator.

Geothermal Power Plant in Reykjavik, Iceland

Cost?...

Companies will often offer a free estimate for your
home.
Maryland $7,700
for a 2,000 sq ft home
Savings of $1,350 per
year are predicted

Fun Facts:

Has been tapped in the UK
since Roman times.
Can also provide

geothermal electricity in your
home.

Geothermal Energy can
provide both heating and
cooling functions for your

home.

TIDAL TREND

energy available from moving water in the
sea.

A consistent

source of

KINETIC ENERGY

How Does It Work?

Dams trap water at high tide
After the tide goes out, gates in the dam are
opened.
Water rushes through the pipes spinning turbines.
The turbines generate electricity.
When the tide comes in the turbines spin the
opposite direction.

It is expected that tidal stream energy capacity
could exceed 120 GW globally.

GW = Gigawatt

*More reliable than solar or wind because the sun
doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always

blow.

It's our
Future...
