MUSICAL PRODUCTION OF
FROZEN JR.
Many members of the KCS community took part
in this full-blown production of this popular Disney
movie-turned -Broadway show, Frozen, modified for
younger performers.
From the primary singers in grades 1 to 3 opening
the show, to graduating students in the lead roles,
both on stage and behind the scenes, more than
200 students worked together to focus their
collective artistic energy to create something
magical and spectacular. This show was so popular
that we needed to add another performance. This is
the first time in KCS history this has occurred.
In addition, more than 40 staff members, parents,
and alumni were directly involved in the production,
creating elaborate costumes and magnificent
set design.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Bringing education into the outdoor setting has
great benefits to health and learning that aren’t
found in the traditional classroom setting. Working
together in outdoor settings creates situations
where students must use valuable skills. Enhancing
social communication skills and asserting personal
control, building stronger practical problem solving
and teamwork skills, or understanding the need
for sustainable relationships between people and
their environments are just a few ways that outdoor
education can benefit students at any age.
Outdoor education at KCS begins in Junior
Kindergarten with outdoor day trips and culminates
in a three-day overnight trip to Norval Outdoor
Education Centre and Rattlesnake Point for our
grade six, seven and eight students in September.
Students must rely on their communication skills
and teamwork abilities to set up their own camp and
cook their own meals. Their days are spent engaged
in team building activities like rock climbing,
rappelling and high ropes. Evenings are spent
together around a bonfire competing in impromptu
singing competitions. When the intermediate
students return from this excursion, their bond
as a class becomes even stronger for their final
years at KCS.

MINDFUL ACTIVITY
Yoga is well known to provide both mental and
physical benefits. Thanks to a grant from the Tevlin
Fund, KCS was able to welcome a team of certified
teachers and yoga instructors from The Yoga Project
for a two week mindfulness program. Students in JK
to grade 8 each received a yoga workshop from The
Yoga Project team focusing on mindfulness, physical
literacy, breath work, focus activities, partner or
group work and relaxation and visualization. Each
workshop was targeted to the students’ age group
and abilities. This is the second year we welcomed
The Yoga Project to KCS, though yoga has been a
standard offering over the past six years at KCS.
In addition to the student workshops, a mindfulness
workshop was also offered to faculty and staff prior
to the Christmas break. During this highly stressful
time, our faculty were provided with hands-on tools
to use to normalize yoga in the classroom and help
incorporate mindfulness into their everyday lives.
TEVLIN FAMILY FUND
FOR SPORT AND
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
For the past eight years, the Tevlin Family Fund for
Sport and Outdoor Education has allowed us to
continue offering enhanced programming that sets
students on a journey to be physically active for life.
In 2019–2020, the Tevlin Fund paid for the grade
7 and 8 KCS in Motion activity to Bowlerama in
February 2020. This was an enriched physical
education activity aligned with the “Target Games”
strand of the physical education curriculum. The
Tevlin Fund also covered various expenses for the
U13 Boys Basketball Team that participated in the
CAIS Basketball Tournament in Montreal in January
2020. Expenses covered include team participation
fee, tournament t-shirts and all coaches’ expenses.

GRADS
KCS appreciates the efforts the Class of 2020 made to make our
school special over the years, and we particularly appreciate the way
this graduating class faced the change to remote learning in the last
three months of school.
We never know what’s in our futures, but a willingness to adapt to
changing circumstances is an important attribute to possess at school,
and in life. Congratulations again to the Class of 2020!

These measures included allowing families the opportunity to withdraw
without penalty, ability to defer tuition fee payments until the start of
school, and cessation of interest charges on overdue accounts. As
the year drew to a close, a refund in recognition of cancelled student
activities was offered to students from JK to grade 8. We gratefully
acknowledge the 78 students whose parents chose to donate their
refund to KCS in support of measures to re-open the school.
Despite the financial stresses of these COVID-relief measures, the
school is reporting a profitable outcome for the year, at a level both
prudent and reasonable in the circumstances. Requests for tuition
refunds were responded to with the explanation that most of the
school’s expenses for the year were locked in. As the financial
highlights indicate, most expense captions, salaries and benefits in
particular, did not lessen as we successfully switched to a remote
learning and work model.
We also should not lose sight of KCS’s other accomplishments including
the successful completion of renovation of Humbertown Park and the
acquisition of a site for our senior campus expansion.
Despite the most unusual of circumstances, school finances have been
safely navigated through another year. This could not have been done
without the unwavering support of KCS families which will allow us to
face future challenges with confidence.

Unfortunately, there were a number of activities and
events that would have happened during the spring
semester that were cancelled or cut short this year
due to the COVID-19 necessitated shut down.
These include:
• BINGO night for the PK – grade 5
• Spring Social at the Drake Commissary
• Earth Week activities
• Pizza Lunches (2)
• Parent Network end of year appreciation
luncheon
• PK–3 New Family Welcome event
• Volunteer Appreciation Week*
• Grandparents and Special Friends Day*
• Camp OOCH walk / Sports Day*
• Lip Sync show for SK to grade 3*
• Acting Out talent show for grades 4 through 8*
*These events were moved onto KCS social media
or run virtually over the last few months.
The Parent Network worked closely with the
administration since March to determine what
programs could be adapted to the online
environment and what events would best be
cancelled for balance of the year. The PN also
scaled back initiatives for the spring semester, as
many families communicated that their priorities
were in adjusting to this new situation and focusing
on their families.
The Parent Network remains open to any parent
at KCS that wishes to contribute by commitment of
time, positive feedback, or ideas, and we are truly
fortunate to have such a dedicated community that
cares about adding to the enhancement of student
life and culture at Kingsway College School.
