Dress in light, cool clothing, wear comfy shoes, put on a dull colored hat and be armed with a pair of binoculars, insect repellent, notebook and pen. All set? Great Do you know what happened back then in here? Well, here is the story The Penang War Museum is reputed to be the largest war museum in South East Asia Strategically located on top of the Batu Maung Hill on the south east of the island. The Penang War Museum was initially a military fortress designed by the British in the 1930 s The 20 acres military fortress has a magnificent view of the sea around the island to defend the Straits of Malacca from Japanese attack coming from the South channel.

The Penang War Museum was restored as a memorial to its dark days and opened to the public in 2002 Interesting fact the museum houses historical artefacts such as cannons and even features underground military tunnels and ammunition bunkers which are located 9 meters underground. Walking around museum CONTENT 2 - MAIN COMMENTARY Some of these tunnels lead all the way to the sea as they once served as access routes to get to submarines. Navigating through these passageways sometimes forces one to walk or even crawl through very narrow, confined spaces, It’s houses a cannon firing bay anti-aircraft firing pits, sleeping quarters for soldiers, cookhouse, lockup and a command center. Unfortunately, it was lost to the invading Japanese during World War II in 1942 In history, the British had anticipated an attack from the sea but the Japanese army approached the fortress by land instead, after pressuring the Thai government to allow the passage of Japanese troops to invade British held Malaya. When the Japanese took over this fortress, it was used as a site to detain prisoners of war. During that time, the Chinese community in Penang lived in constant fear of being targeted victims by the Japanese. The Japanese often detained and interrogate students from local Chinese schools, Chinese community leaders and others. Many untold atrocities were carried out here. We try to preserve our wartime heritage so that our people get to explore and discover what it was like during the World War II. Let the history alive at Penang War Museum Alright, now it’s your time to explore the historical in the museum. Thank you I hope you are happy with the uniqueness of this museum. Dear tourists, come here gathered. I want to tell you some interesting thing about this place. Basically, this Colonial Penang Museum is a place that will bring you back to Penang’s colonial past and a lifestyle of the wealthy merchant of Penang through unique antiques such that reflect a decadent way of living and reflect the vastness of space in which they used to live. To add to this, there’s also a personal handwritten document by Captain Francis Light, the founder of Penang and intricate art pieces from the past such as sublime marble carving of a young girl asleep on a pillow and beautifully commissioned stained glass. Most of the exhibits once lived in large, well known mansion around Penang. As we visit this place, we will imagine about the British colonial era in Penang but this spacious house contains a fantastic collection of antique furniture, gorgeous stained glass windows and hundreds of priceless jewelry, artworks and collections In term of exhibition quality, this must be among the top museums in Malaysia. Walking around museum CONTENT 2 - MAIN COMMENTARY During the colonial era, the British created the conditions for Penang to become a vibrant, a cosmopolitan free port attracting successful merchants and traders from all over the world who amassed tremendous wealth and liked to show it off Chinese and Peranakans (Baba Nyonya) particularly thrived under British rule and they emulated and sought favor with the English by building sprawling European style mansions and filling them with the best that money could buy from Europe, China and elsewhere.

The founder of the museum, Madam Jasmine Tan assembled this wonderful collection of artefacts over half a century, gathered from the mansion of these wealthy merchants in the leafy, opulent districts of Georgetown, Penang and elsewhere in the region. There are so many beautiful pieces in this museum that you must see for yourself, but here are some of the main attractions such as the charming 19 th century white Carrara marble statue of a sleeping girl by R Bigazzi of Florence it is difficult to believe it is made of stone. Walking around museum CONTENT 3 - MAIN COMMENTARY In addition, this elegant French desk, circa 1890 by renowned craftsman Francois Linke, would be quite valuable A similar one was on sale recently for over USD 160 000. There are a number of splendid stained glass windows on show, depicting non-religious subjects, created by celebrated Irish artist such as Kathleen Quigley and Hubert McGoldrick and famous English artist designer William Morris. Let me show you the secret space at this beautifully carved Indian made captain’s table In addition, east meet west in this fabulous bridal table and chair set carved in traditional Chinese style and topped with Venetian glass etched with dragon and phoenix designs. The color is the reflection of the stain glass window above. So, the rest you can see for yourself in the space the uniqueness of the relics of the past I give you an hour for you to take picture and find info about the uniqueness Please gather here at 5 50 pm, so we can get on the bus immediately.
