PROVERB

1. ALWAYS PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

MEAN : Try as hard as you can or give your best.
EXAMPLE : You need to put your best foot forward in
the interview if you want to land that job.

2. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND
WORD.

MEAN : It is easier to show or explain something
through a picture than trough words.

EXAMPLE : A picture is worth a thousand
words.It is easier to learn biology through reams of
text.

3. AS FIT AS A FIDDLE

MEAN : To be very healty and strong.
EXAMPLE : The deputy Prime minister is 87,
but he's as fit as a fiddle.

4. BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER.

MEAN : Relationship with family ( or blood
relatives ) is stronger than other relationships.

Example : My friends invited me for the picnic on
sunday, but I have to go to my cousin's birthday
instead.Blood is thicker than water, isn't it?

5.DON'T BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS
YOU.

MEAN : Don't act badly toward the person who
has helped you.

EXAMPLE : Don't bite the hand that feeds you
by talking ill of you mentor for such a small thing.
If he distances himself from you or bad about you,
it can hurt you bad.

6. EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM.

MEAN : One who starts early on the work has
higher chance of success.

EXAMPLE : So that I can choose from a winder
selection and get a better piece. Early bird
catches the worm, after all.

7. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN
WORDS.

MEAN : Action are a better reflection of one's
character because it's early to say things, but
dificult to act on them and follow through.

EXAMPLE :Julie always says she’ll donate to the
school, and she never does, so I doubt she will this
year. Actions speak louder than words, after all.

8. Good things come to those who wait.

MEAN :Patience is often rewarded.

EXAMPLE : The best investors in the world have
made their fortunes by investing for the long
term. Good things come to those who wait.

9. Hope for the best, prepare for the
worst.

MEAN : Be optimistic, but be prepared for a
scenario where things can go wrong.

EXAMPLE : We’re hoping to raise capital from
investors, but it may not come so soon. Therefore,
it’s imperative to look for alternatives as well.
Let’s hope for the best, but prepare for the
worst.

10. Kill two birds with one stone.

MEAN : Solve two problems with the same action.

EXAMPLE : He killed two birds with one
stone by buying the grocery and visiting the
museum on the same route.

11.Like aur with a cliff

MEAN : helping each other

EXAMPLE : Ali always helps Nurul like an aur
with a cliff

12.Like the moon on a star fence.

MEAN : The beauty of the girl is unparalleled

EXAMPLE : Fatin is like the moon on a star
fence even though she is sitting among the rows
of beautiful women.

13.A prawn is (hidden) behind the stone.

MEAN : There is hidden agenda or motive.
When we look at the stone, we could not see
anything but a prawn is actually hidden behind
it.

EXAMPLE : The man who came at dusk to Tuan Haji

Hashim's house was a bit suspicious because from his
actions it seemed that there was a prawn is behind
the stone.

14.Like chicken being carried away by
the eagle.

MEAN : Someone who disappeared suddenly
without a trace.

EXAMPLE : Hafis's death, which was like a
chicken being carried away by an eagle,
shocked his friends.

15.Like flesh with nails.

MEAN : A close friendship between two
persons who are inseparable, like the nails and
the flesh beneath it.

EXAMPLE : Azman and Azira are close friends
like flesh with nails.

16.Flintstone or a stone used to start a
fire.

MEAN : When we call a person ‘batu api’ it
means we are saying the person like to instigate
and gossip to start discord and fights between
two parties.

EXAMPLE :in the fight, Ahmad was the
flintstone.

17.A bird flying, busy preparing chilis.

MEAN : Waiting to celebrate a success that has not

yet come. In the proverb, the bird is still flying freely
but one already is preparing the spices in anticipating
to cook the bird. But how sure is the person the bird
can be caught in the first place?

EXAMPLE :Dad teased the ashes that were like bird
flying, busy preparing chilis because there were so
many very desires and plans he wanted to do but he

18.Where the earth is trodden under
foot, there the heavens are upheld.

MEAN : No matter where we are we must
abide by the adaptations and rules of the place
we live.
EXAMPLE :When we are in the land of the people,

we must respect the customs and way of life of the
people there, as the saying goes, where the earth is
trodden under foot, there the heavens are upheld.

19.Dew at the edge of the grass.

MEAN : Something that would not last as a dew
on the edge of a blade of grass will disappear
once the sun rises.

EXAMPLE : Lee and Nina's marriage lasted only
a month like dew at the edge of the grass.

20.Like ducks returning in the evening.

MEAN : Ducks love to go wandering to the waterways.

When it is evening, it is time for them to return. One can
imagine the relunctance of the ducks to leave their
favourite place. They would walk at a very slow and
agonising pace, just like a person would if he/she is not
excited about the place they are heading.

EXAMPLE : Hani is always left behind by her friends when

she comes home from school because she walks like a
duck returning in the evening.
