H ope, relevance, and authenticity. Broadly speaking, these are well understood concepts to which we can all relate. Yet, if
you grasp their true essence, the significance of these words for society at large, and more specifically for us as leaders,
is beyond profound.
I reflected on Aung Sang Suu Kyi, the Burmese politician, who between 1989 and 2010 became an international symbol of
peaceful resistance, providing hope to many Burmese people who were looking for a better life.

One of Africa’s own, Graça Machel, continues to be a global advocate for the development and empowerment of women and
children in Africa. She provides women and children with hope, inspiring them to make different choices and to find solutions
to problems that they never believed existed.

In 1954 Lilian Ngoyi, at a conference of the Federation of South African Women said, ‘Let us be brave: we have heard of men
shaking in their boots, but who ever heard of a woman shaking in her skirt?’ Together with Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Albertina
Sisulu and Sophie Williams, Ngoyi led the Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on the 9th of August 1956, to protest
against the pass laws, on behalf of 20 000 women from across South Africa. She was banned for 15 years. The hope that she
inspired became the power that drove South African women to change their circumstances.

All of these authentic leaders were prepared to hold unpopular positions, show deep concern for people, embrace equality
and social justice. Above all, they served a higher purpose and had a clear vision for a future society. It was never about them,
it was always about the greater good.

If we reflect on the state of the world today, it is very apparent that now, more than ever, we need leaders of this
calibre. Our future world is likely to become a tougher place, especially for our youth. Global issues include growing
religious fundamentalism; rising tensions between global superpowers; an ageing world population; the effects
of climate change; the wave of anger associated with growing inequality both within and between countries;
the migration of people on a scale that has not been seen for centuries; and the changing world of work.

Against this backdrop, our ability as leaders to instil hope is critical to making a positive impact in
people's lives. The need for strong authentic leadership is at an all-time high. Like Aung Sang Suu Kyi,
Graça Machel, and Lilian Ngoyi, being an authentic leader is about the greater good and fulfilling a higher
purpose. Ultimately it is about instilling hope in people, inspiring them to change their circumstances.

WORTH TRAVELLING FOR EXPERIENCE

Words: Keith Bain, Picture: Supplied LOST IN TRANSLATION

What is it about bars? From boozy pick-up lines to brawling boys and bleary-eyed strangers burying their emotions, they’re invariably
where all kinds of issues bubble to the surface. They can also be soothing sanctuaries where you find comfort in conversation or
watch bartenders at work. Pictured here is what’s considered one of the world’s finest – it’s an oasis within Tokyo’s Trunk (Hotel),

hidden off Cat Street in Shibuya. It’s where award-winning mixologist Ryuichi Saito concocts such cocktails as ‘Getting Trunk’ – using
Ogasawara rum, hojicha tea, almonds and spices.

An imaginary Japanese watering hole from the 1960s is the setting for In the Bar of a Tokyo Hotel, a drama by Tennessee Williams
currently playing at The Vineyard, a lush hotel in Newlands, Cape Town. More likely to stir emotions than soothe spirits, the symbolism-

laden play is about the volatile relationship between an artist and his wife. While he’s naked in his room struggling to develop a more
modern style of art, she’s drinking up a storm, flirting fiercely with the hotel barman. It’s the kind of alcohol-fuelled bar episode that’ll
make you think twice about ordering that ‘one for the road’. (Incidentally, you can read about drinks for sustainable sobriety on page 43,

and – if you’re not having any of that – peruse a selection of exciting new spirits on page 131.)
Accompanying the show is a wine-paired dinner developed by Mike Bassett who heads up the hotel’s Myoga restaurant; it’s a fusion
menu that takes inspiration from the play’s Japanese setting. The venue is the Splash Café, transformed to make diners feel like they’re
part of the play’s milieu – not quite Lost in Translation, but a sure-fire way of travelling back in time as you’re seduced by dialogue
crafted by a master playwright. Seats are R650, or you can catch the show with dinner, bed and breakfast for just R3 195 per couple.

Hurry, though, as performances end on 17 August. 021 657 4500, [email protected]

have no doubt that many of the world’s legendary drunks are
turning in their graves. Many of them were fierce and formidable
writers. Heroically intoxicated scribes like Hunter S Thompson and
Tennessee Williams, Hemingway and Kerouac, Truman Capote
and James Joyce. Essentially my heroes. Bless them all, but this
is a story set in a brave new world, one in which boozing is on the

decline, and – heaven help us – there is an actual hashtaggable
trend called ‘sober curious’. In fact, Sober Curious is the title
of a book chronicling the rising phenomenon of consciously
choosing not to drink alcohol – at least not all the time. It came
out last year, and in its wake there are legions of people appending
#mindfuldrinking to pictures of themselves sipping New Age elixirs
and ripping up the town despite being completely level-headed. Because,
believe or not, it’s now perfectly fine – socially acceptable, even – to decline that drink. Just last night, in fact, when
the waiter offered me a white, frothy cocktail, I smiled and said, ‘Not for me, thanks, I’m sober.’
It was a slip of the tongue, of course, a joke. What was I thinking? I stopped drinking over a decade ago and have
never, not once, called myself sober. While I don’t drink alcohol, terms like ‘sobriety’ have always been reserved for
people dealing with dependency issues – former heavy drinkers in some sort of 12-step recovery programme.
My reason for quitting, though, was an act of self-preservation: because, when I drank, I drank a lot. And I drank
frequently. Somewhere in my mid-30s, though, I figured out that – for my genetic predisposition and personality type –
abstinence was the responsible choice.
You see, for some of us, alcohol is a trigger. For some, it’ll mean lighting a cigarette, others will pick a fight. For me,
alcohol is a trigger to drink more, and carry on until the bar lights flick on and off because the staff want to go home. I loved
the buzz and delighted in that journey from tipsy to wasted. Drinking was fundamental to my social life, hardwired into me
because the cultural framework in which I grew up led me to believe that alcohol was a vital part of adult existence. Never once
did I think it might be something I’d deliberately exclude from my reality.
But I hated hangovers and feared what the blackouts really meant. I wanted to spend more of my time conscious and aware – and
fewer of my mornings drifting around in a bleary-eyed fug. So, okay, I guess I am well and truly sober.

RISE OF THE NEW ABSTAINERS EXPERIENCE

There was a period after I stopped drinking that I was the focus of many friends’ shame and pity and – yes – their
anxiety, too. ‘Come on! Just one glass,’ was the sort of support I got. Many people become uncomfortable when you
don’t drink with them, it seems. And, to be honest, 10 years ago, I really was some kind of anomaly: not pregnant,
not an athlete, not religious, and yet I didn’t drink.

But, globally, sobriety is trending. Research shows that millennials are transforming long-established booze
culture, increasingly saying no to alcohol and experimenting with sober nights out. To this crowd, drinking can mean
catching up over kombucha, virgin G&Ts, and cocktails crafted from non-alcoholic spirits. There’s a new wave of
health enthusiasts, former drinkers, alcohol-free experimenters, and booze refusers who are getting kinda-sorta
serious about sobriety. At least some of the time. And some of us, well, we’re very serious all of the time.

In April, a Good Morning America segment attributed this new ‘sober-curious movement’ to a rising tide of
people who are taking alcohol out of their lives, not because they’re addicted but because they want to be healthier
and reduce anxiety. At the heart of the discussion is Sober Curious, the aforementioned book whose author, Ruby
Warrington, believes we’re at a point where people are finally getting over the stigma that’s always been intertwined
with sobriety – that anyone sober must be an alcoholic. She says people are now trying sobriety for the same
reasons they might be eating mindfully – because they’re opting to be conscious and
careful about what they put in their bodies.
Warrington says she came of age in the Sex in the City era when it was deemed cool to
conclude each day with rounds of Cosmopolitans – traditionally there’ve been a lot of
reasons to associate alcohol with socialising, parties and glamorous gatherings. But
what media representations of glam get-togethers don’t often show are the negative
consequences of alcohol-related illnesses and abusive drinking. Warrington notes that
one in 12 Americans suffers from alcoholism; cirrhosis rose by 31% between 2000 and
2015; and that cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease can all be linked to alcohol abuse.
She believes that ‘limiting our drinking may be the latest frontier in healthy living’.
She says that to her mind, ‘anyone who is questioning their drinking is sober curious’
and that it needn’t mean being abstinent. Instead, she says that being a non-drinker is a kind of
baseline from where you can choose – very selectively – when to engage in having a drink. And when
you do, you tend to do so more responsibly.
