THE SPIRIT OF UBUNTU EXPLORE

The Atlas of Happiness is a beautifully conceived new book
by Helen Russell. In it she takes a lively look at how various
nations around the world celebrate and express that one human
emotion of which we could all use so much more. As a taster,

here’s her chapter on South Africa’s spirit of ubuntu

EXPLORE THE SPIRIT OF UBUNTU

Ubuntu (pronounced ‘ooh-boon-to’), noun, in Bantu languages, from -ntú, meaning ‘human being’ and ubu – a pre x to form the abstract
noun ‘humanity’. A term in use since the 19th century that means, ‘I nd my worth in you and you nd your worth in me’; a sense of
interconnection and the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. Bantu is spoken by Bantu peoples spanning Central
Africa, Southern Africa and the African Great Lakes region, but the concept of ubuntu has been claimed by South Africa in the past 30 years
as a humanitarian objective to live by.

It’s 2013 and the memorial service became a term used by South Africans

all bound together in ways that can be
invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness
to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
sharing ourselves with others, and caring
for those around us.’ This was the first
time I had ever heard the term ubuntu –
having been too young to fully appreciate
its significance during the anti-apartheid
movement. But it struck me. And I became,
for a while, mildly obsessed.

‘So you should have been,’ Vusi,
a friend of a friend from Welkom in the
Free State province tells me. ‘Ubuntu is an
ethical approach to life that’s crucial for
happiness. It’s about feeling interconnected
– living in peace and harmony with others
– and it’s the essence of humanity.’ Big
claim, Vusi, big claim… ‘But it’s true,’ he
tells me, ‘because how can you be happy
if the people around you aren’t?’ He’s got
a point. Ubuntu is a philosophical term
but it’s also strongly linked to traditional
community values. ‘And it’s who we are as
South Africans,’ says Vusi.

The concept was first documented
in 1846 as a way to express the need to
restore dignity to the people of Africa after
the cruelties of colonisation. Ubuntu later

have a collective responsibility with ubuntu
and a community is advanced through
recognition and appreciation of individual
difference – not in spite of it. So whereas
sceptics of socialism fear that compulsory
sharing makes everybody worse off in the
long run, ubuntu proposes that helping
those around us simultaneously improves
our lot – as well as society as a whole. ‘It’s
inclusive and embracing,’ says Vusi, ‘and
it’s probably the most important lesson
I live my life by.’ But aren’t we always being
told not to take all the troubles of the
world on our shoulders? Won’t we suffer
from compassion fatigue if we care too
much, about everyone? ‘No,’ is the answer:
‘Because “everyone” is your family,’ says
Vusi, ‘they make you, you.’ He doesn’t mean
this literally, rather that our connection to
humanity is ‘always wider than our blood
ties.’ Ubuntu means saying to the people
around us: ‘I understand your struggle.
I appreciate your journey.’ And we’re all on
a journey of one kind or another.
