VEGANISM

FAST FACT: Vegan Society founder Donald Watson stopped eating meat

as a child after witnessing a pig being slaughtered on his family farm. His
brother and sister also became vegans. His mother – a pig farmer – said she
“felt like a hen that had hatched a clutch of duck eggs”.

VEGANISM IN SA

In South Africa almost all our restaurant chains

now offer at least one viable vegan menu option.

Our supermarkets carry multiple vegan ready-

changing. People might not notice it but vegans have changed even the

Are you ready to handle the summer
heat? Joanne Carew chatted to a range

tof skincare experts to help you enjoy

the warm weather, without the risks

emperatures are rising and everyone is heading outdoors. Whether you’re lounging by the pool,
working in the garden or heading on a hike, you need to take steps to keep your skin safe.

Skin cancer is a serious problem, says Dr David Eedes, a clinical oncologist and an Icon Network
clinical consultant. In fact, South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the
world. But the good news is that the risks of skin cancer can be reduced if people are careful when
spending time in the sun. If you grew up during a time when people were less careful about sun exposure, it’s
likely that your skin will already have some sun damage. There is no way to reverse this damage, says Eedes, but
you can prevent future harm.
Heidi Cerfontyne, research and development specialist at Nimue Skin Technology, explains that different types
of ultra violet (UV) rays cause different kinds of damage. UVB rays are responsible for sun burn,
skin damage and ultimately skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin. These rays
damage cell structure, cause ageing and increase skin cancer risks.

PROTECT YOURSELF

Dr Noori Moti, resident dermatologist at Laserderm in Illovo, advises that it’s best
to avoid the sun during peak times, which extends far longer than you may think.
According to Moti, the sun is at its harshest between 10am and 3pm. If you have to
be out at these times, the experts suggest that you wear protective clothing and a
wide-brimmed hat and try to stay in the shade, where possible. And obviously, apply a
high-SPF sunscreen that is approved by the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)
to all exposed skin about 15 minutes before you go into the sun. And then reapply this
sun protection every two to three hours.

Parents need to be responsible for protecting their children against sun damage, notes Cerfontyne.
Their skin is particularly sensitive, so parents need to take the necessary precautions whenever their little
ones are exposed to the sun. They must also educate their children about the how to protect their skin.

Keen to debunk a few myths about the sun, Eedes notes that your eyes can get sunburnt too. So it’s
important to wear sunglasses when you’re out in the sun.

“You can even get sunburnt through your window while you’re driving around in your car. And don’t
be fooled by cloud cover. You can still get sunburnt when there are clouds in the sky,” he says. Eedes also
notes that fair-skinned people may be more prone to sunburn but this doesn’t mean that people with
darker complexions aren’t at risk. Everyone should be cautious when it comes to the sun – not just to
safeguard yourself against sunburn and cancer, but also to prevent premature ageing.

SUN SAVVY AND REEF SAFE

Recently, sunscreen news headlines have suggested that certain
chemicals – like oxybenzone and octinoxate – found in sun creams
might be damaging the ocean’s coral reefs. While alternative
studies have already challenged this argument, the news quickly
saw some US states banning the sales of sunscreens containing
potentially harmful chemicals.

Either way, if you’d like to protect your skin from the sun without
worrying about what impact you’re having on the environment, you
should opt for a natural or organic alternative. Natural sunblocks shield your
skin from UVA and UVB rays and prevent synthetic chemicals from entering your bloodstream. Organic
sunblocks are also eco-friendly and won’t harm marine life or damage coral reefs.
