the mreatest adventure they wcll ever face cs runncnm towards the wronm moalposts.

Real adventure implies that there is some risk of the unknown, some opportunity to go off course,

to get hopelessly lost. Being deposited by your Uber driver at the door of the B&B that you meticulously

researched on the internet, from the photographs of the driveway to the soap dispensers, is not an

adventure. Today Hansel and Gretel can wander into the Schwarzwald and use Google Maps to find

the nearest McDonald’s.

However, takcnm the local bus from Blantyre to where the road ends somewhere near Monkey Bay, and then

Africa can still offer adventure, as the camping spot under the baobabs about 100km into

Botswana is not listed on Booking.com, because it does not have a bathroom. You just need

to do what humans did for the 10 000 years before 2005 – and that means you should

travel with toilet paper but without the internet. It might be that the B&B across the

road does not have cockroaches, but what you don’t know won’t disappoint you, and

you will have better stories to tell.

WORTH TRAVELLING FOR EXPERIENCE

Big screen dreams

Perhaps we have Black Panther to
thank for making the world sit up and
pay attention – movies made in Africa
are having a bit of a moment right
now. Aside from Christiaan Olwagen’s
stunningly-crafted Kanarie, which
opens in local cinemas this month
(see page 38), film buffs can sink their
teeth into a selection of over
120 movies being screened at the
Cape Town International Film
Market & Festival. Many of them
are by African filmmakers, including
Supa Modo (pictured), a heart-warming
Kenyan film that’s been racking up
awards at festivals around the world
since its release in February. Helmed
by first-time director Likarion Wainaina
and co-produced by Tom Tykwer
(who directed the cult 1998 film Run
Lola Run), it’s about a courageous
young girl who wants to become a
superhero. When terminal illness
scuppers her plans, her entire village
rallies together to turn her dream
into reality. It’s spirited, poignant and
rather gut-wrenching cinema. The
festival isn’t just for film geeks keen on
a big screen binge, though. Aside from
screenings, it’s an important event for
movie-makers, with a programme of
industry events, workshops and talks
to help develop content and stimulate
the growth of Africa’s film industry –
everything from financing to virtual
reality technology will be discussed.
So, if you think you have the plot for
the next Africa-themed blockbuster up
your sleeve, it’ll be worth attending.
It’s happening at Artscape and at
various venues across the V&A
Waterfront from 9 to 19 October.

EXPERIEDCE GET LOST IN THE EIGHTIES

Based on the real-life
experiences of composer
and musical all-rounder Charl-
Johan Lingenfelder (who co-wrote the
screenplay and designed the music),
Kanarie had its world premiere in May at the
Toronto LGBT Film Festival, Inside Out.
A stylish, beautifully rendered film, it is unlike
any other South African movie and utterly
world class. It will make you laugh and cry –
and perhaps also make you want to dance
in the aisles; its nationwide big screen
release happens on 19 October.

THE VOICE OCTOBER 2018 45

It’s her final fling after a long and beautiful career
as one of the sultriest R&B songstresses of all time.
People have been getting lost in Randy Crawford’s
sweet, mellifluous voice since the 1970s when she began
making a name for herself in New York, where she performed
with the likes of George Benson and signed with Columbia
Records. She released her first single – ‘Knock On Wood’ / ‘If You Say
the Word’ – in 1972, and recorded her debut solo album, Everything Must
Change, in 1976, showcasing her gentle, sensual, and effervescent ability. Among
her solo singles, ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’ (1980) and ‘You Might Need Somebody’ (1981)
have become soul standards and her cover of ‘Rainy Night in Georgia’ is the stuff of
legend. Her 1981 album, Secret Combination, remained on the UK albums chart for
60 weeks. She’s toured South Africa previously, and would have returned this month
as part of her Farewell Tour. Sadly, due to ill-health, Randy cancelled her ‘Farewell
South Africa, with love Randy Crawford’ concerts just as we went to print.
