BMW i3

The BMW i3 is one of the greenest cars currently available in South Africa. In terms
of visual allure, there’s nothing quite like it, and that’s because it’s been built from the
ground up as an electric vehicle. Bar the rear suicide doors, it looks practically identical to
the i3 Coupé concept on which it’s based, and that’s a good thing. Climb aboard and you’ll
continue to be amazed by the i3’s futuristic tendencies. Access is pretty straightforward,
but you’ll need to step over the chunky carbon-fibre sill to get inside. There’s a certain
spaciousness to the cabin thanks to some clever packaging and a large glasshouse, and it
can accommodate four adults, albeit at a squeeze when you’re paying R597 800.
The clincher: Not only does it not emit C02, but it’s also constructed from 95% recyclable
materials and looks like it comes from the future.

green spiritSMELLSLIKE
Ecofriendly mobility doesn’t necessarily have to be
boring. Aaron Borrill picks five cars that offer a sought-
after combination of performance, efficiency and frugality.
Plus, they’re ideal for the carpooling commute – something
all South Africans should be adopting to help save fuel and
the environment.

Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine AWD

The XC90 is an intriguing thing to look at. It’s far more engaging on a visual level than
anything else in the Volvo stable – a series of defined character traits and chiselled
lines take responsibility for the kerbside drama. There’s more than meets the
eye, however. This suave Swedish brute’s dual personality gives it the
edge over its closest rivals – not only is it a high-performance, spacious
SUV, but it’s also pretty light on the sauce. The Twin Engine XC90 packs
300kW/640Nm of torque, which is bolstered by an electric motor. Due
to its plug-in petrol-electric configuration, the XC90 T8 is rumoured to
consume just 2.1L/100km on the combined cycle and will launch from
standstill to 100kph in 5.6 seconds – which is really impressive if you can
see beyond the R1 106 500 price tag. Gulp.
The clincher: Its seven-set configuration and 1 868 litres of cargo room puts
it in the upper echelons of this market segment.

There are one or two negatives, however:
the battery pack reduces the C-Class’s

but that’s a compromise those with a

Volkswagen California Beach Camper Van

What’s a carpooling story without including the legendary Volkswagen Kombi? The
one pictured here, though, is a little different from the versions seen tootling along
the promenade – it’s packed with nostalgic references, such as the two-tone
colour paintwork from the original Kombi of the ’50s. It's available with
either four or five seats as standard (with two extra swivel chairs if
needed), so you can literally transport the entire office to and from
work. The California Beach Camper employs a 103kW/340Nm 2.0-litre
turbo-diesel engine that consumes just 8.1L/100km with 219g/km of
CO2 – not bad considering its dimensions and 2.4-tonne kerb weight.
The clincher: The rear bench can fold flat to create a large, fully
padded double bed, so you can always use it as your home to make
up for the R833 700 outlay.
