Pretty in pink 1

After hunting down edible treasures, it pays to have something
wet and cold and preferably pink to help wash them down.
This is our pick of quaffable pink drinks – great for welcoming
autumn and quite fine any time of the year.
1 Lozärn Wines in the Robertson Valley produces South
Africa’s only Carménère Rosé, celebrating a red varietal from
Chile. The 2019 vintage tastes of candyfloss, strawberries and
Pink Lady apples. lozarn.co.za
2 Wine in a can is apparently the next big thing, with massive growth in the US market (where

there are now over 100 canned wine brands) thanks to millennials looking for convenience
(after all, many festivals don’t like bottles). Spearheading this growth market are
winemakers Black Elephant Vintners who’ve launched canned Sauvignon Blanc – and
have this rosé in a 250ml can. If that doesn’t work for you, there’s always their highly
quaffable Rosé Rebel. bevintners.co.za
3 Zandvliet Shiraz Rosé is made from grapes specifically farmed (near Ashton, in
the Robertson Valley) to make this high-quality pink vintage – it won a Double Gold
medal at Rosé Rocks, SA’s rosé wines championship. zandvliet.co.za
4 You’ll detect hints of grapefruit and lime on this Vriesenhof Grenache Rosé
2019, with cherry and strawberry aromatics. vriesenhof.co.za
5 From Tulbagh’s legendary bubbly estate, Krone has two blush-coloured 2018
vintage Cap Classiques, both 87% Pinot Noir and 13% Chardonnay. The Vintage
Rosé Cuvée Brut is salmon-pink with a rosewater and sour figs floral bouquet
and pomegranates, cranberries, candied orange and nectarine on the palate. The
Vintage Night Nectar Demi-Sec Rosé is coppery pink with berries and
cherries on the nose, and flavours like toffee apple and brambleberry in the
mouth. kronemcc.com
6 Cool climate Durbanville Hills Sparkling Rosé is blended from equal
proportions of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon – you get ripe strawberry and
citrus aromas, as well as Turkish delight, rose petals and candyfloss. And then
ripe berries, grapefruit and more candyfloss on the palate. durbanvillehills.co.za

PINK FOR THE WIN DISCOVER

7 Not all great-tasting pink drinks are wines. Add raspberry and hibiscus to kombucha, made by fermenting tea
with a special culture, and you have a tantalising fizzy drink that’s great for gut health. With a background in
making MCCs and Champagne, Manon Colmant and Mark Jones are the makers behind Happy Culture, a dry
style kombucha that’s low in sugar, has delicate but lively flavours, and is super-effervescent. happyculture.co.za
8 The 2016 vintage of Dainty Bess – an extra-brut pink bubbly with a rose-gold tinge – is now available. Made
with grapes sourced from Wellington’s Klein Optenhorst estate, the tiny 850kg harvest was supplemented with
cool-climate Pinot Noir from Elgin to produce just 2 663 bottles. daintybess.co.za
9 Waterkloof Cape Coral 2019 Mourvèdre Rosé marks the 10th harvest at the estate for winemaker
Nadia Barnard-Langenegger. It’s part of Waterkloof’s site-specific, single-grape-variety Circumstance range,
a pale rosé with delicate pomegranate and raspberry aromas. waterkloofwines.co.za
10 For gin enthusiasts, Bloom Jasmine & Rose combines a classic London Dry recipe with an infusion of
Moroccan rose petals and East Asian jasmine flowers to create a floral, sugar-free pink gin with complex
flavours. Also worth trying is Greenall’s Wild Berry, a pink gin made by distilling raspberries and blackberries
with more traditional gin botanicals – it’s also sugar-free. bloomgin.com, greenallsgin.com
11 Launched last year by Van Loveren Family Vineyards, Perlé de Jean Pinot Grigio is a salmon-pink wine
that pairs perfectly with prawns – expect aromas of ripe, fresh red berries, citrus zest and melon. vanloveren.co.za
12 Finally, if you’re in a spoiling mood (Mother’s Day is on 10 May, FYI), then opt for a bottle of Champagne
Nicolas Feuillatte Réserve Exclusive Rosé in its Japanese sakura-inspired packaging. Or splash out on
a bottle of Bollinger Rosé from one of the world’s most revered Champagne houses; if you’ve R1 300 lying
around, that is. vinimark.co.za

FINAL FLING

discov CHANGING THE WATER

So, as I mentioned near the front of this magazine, one of my
friends (who is a CrossFit mom fearful that her baby boy will
crawl for the rest of his life because he still hasn’t learnt to
walk) recently offered me something she called vegan water.
I’m totally serious.
Now, please bear with me. Don’t get upset, no matter in which part
of the vegan-carnivore-flexitarian-keto-Banting-fasting spectrum you
find yourself.
While I am sure plenty of people will raise their eyebrows,

just as many will be wondering how many Instagram likes
they’ll score when they post that #VeganWater selfie.
Frankly, I don’t think the concept of vegan water is
necessarily a bad thing. I just didn’t know it was a ‘thing’.
I mean it sounds a bit like ‘air with oxygen’, or ‘rainbows
with seven colours’.
Well, now I know that there is a water that is
presumably free of anything that I always assumed
wasn’t in water. It’s a drink that’s completely and
utterly 100% vegan.
It tasted, since you must be wondering, quite
a lot like water. Average, normal, standard water.
Which is not quite the same as having
a vegan burger and then comparing it to a beef
burger. Those are two fundamentally different
experiences. Taste-wise and metaphysically.
Even if the one bleeds beetroot juice, it’s not the
same as a burger with a bovine background.
While Emily’s vegan water took me by
surprise, what it really made me realise is just
how remarkable these times we are living in are.
We’re not even a third of the way in and already
this year seems to be the one in which we’re all
being compelled to air out the cupboards
and examine the way things have
been done in the past. For some, it
might mean that it’s time to give
the old H2O a rethink. For others
(like me), it means ‘out with the dusty old

patriarchal hand-me-downs – and in with equality, acceptance
and RuPaul’s Drag Race’.

Life can be a seriously bitter pill to swallow, but maybe if we
all learnt to cultivate a bit more tolerance for one another’s
quirks and foibles, that pill would go down a whole lot easier.
For everyone. Vegans included.
er something new
