How we answered the call
Kid Net Foundation | 2019 Annual Report
LETTER FROM THE CEO
Answer the call...
There’s one constant at Jonathan’s Place, and it’s that the phone never stops ringing. In FY19, we experienced an increase in care days of 10,477 over the previous fiscal year, and we don’t expect that number to decrease anytime soon.
The Jonathan’s Place Staff, Board of Directors, Foster Care
& Adoptive Parents, and Volunteers would like to thank you
for continuing to answer the call. Over the past 28 years,
not only have you joined us in meeting the immediate needs
of the abused, abandoned, and neglected children that have come to our doors, but you have also supported the expansion of services to ensure that every child receives the supportive services they so desperately need.
Due to your support, we expanded our continuum of care by adding Treatment Foster Care to our Foster Care & Adoption Program, which allows us to care for children with Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, and children determined to have been sex trafficked. Our Foster Care & Adoption program continues to grow by leaps and bounds, having crossed the threshold of caring for 100 children, in one day, and that number continued to grow over the past year; our long-term Girls Residential Therapeutic and Transitional Living programs continue to care for girls who have suffered from sexual abuse and/or are on the verge of becoming homeless. These two programs continue to instill self-confidence, knowledge, and love to girls who spent years experiencing nothing but self-doubt, dishonesty, and degradation; our temporary Emergency Shelter continues to answer the call for children in need of immediate shelter 24 hours a day–365 days a year; and last but definitely not least our National Safe Place runaway prevention program continues to partner with QuikTrip Convenience Stores and DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) buses and trains to
meet the immediate needs of children and youth in crisis who find themselves on the streets with nowhere to go and no one to turn to.
Don’t think for one minute that we intend to stop there. Next fiscal year we will partner with the Texas Governor’s Office by opening an Emergency Shelter and Specialized Foster Care & Adoption programs for children who have been sex trafficked and in need of therapeutic services and loving homes. We are extremely excited about this addition to our continuum of care, and we look forward to having you join us in caring and advocating for these children.
As you continue to read through the statistics in this annual report, my hope is that you see the impact you have made on Jonathan’s Place and the lives of the abused children in your community. Your support ensures that the children who come into our care can safely take their first steps, attend their first day of school, learn how to ride a bike and experience the simple act of just sitting in the warmth of the sun while eating ice cream after a fun game of kickball...and for that—we thank you for answering the call!

EMERGENCY SHELTER
The Emergency Shelter provides residential care and specialized services to newborns and children up to 18 years old. Jonathan’s Place is one of only a handful of shelters in the DFW Metroplex that will accept children under the age of 5, allowing us the opportunity to keep sibling groups together. The children living in the Emergency Shelter come to Jonathan’s Place broken, battered, and afraid, following a removal by Child Protective Services for abuse or neglect. At the time of their placement, which can last up to 90 days, there are no other options for these children. We take them into our
care and strive to provide a quality, home-like environment to meet their unique individual needs.
In addition to food and shelter, every child in our
care has medical/dental care, weekly therapy, 93 developmental and psychological assessments, and
attends school. The staff work with the children
daily on age-appropriate lessons, including hygiene,
grooming, appropriate dress, table manners, chores,
conflict resolution, honesty, healthy decision-
making, social skills, time management, homework
and study skills, trust, and personal responsibility.

GIRLS RESIDENTIAL THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM
For girls ages 10-18 who have been victims of abuse and who struggle with complex emotional and behavioral issues, Jonathan’s Place is one of only a few residential options. Each of these girls is a product of years of abuse and neglect,
and many also suffer from eating disorders, depression, low self-esteem, poor coping skills, self-sabotage, and distrust of others. In this program, these girls find a therapeutic home environment with structured supervision in which they can be safe and work to heal.
The staff and therapists work with the girls on proper coping skills, healthy relationships, and mutual trust. All residents are enrolled in school, attend weekly therapy, and, just like in any family, have chores and responsibilities within the cottage.

FOSTER CARE & ADOPTION
Unfortunately, the current capacity of foster homes in the DFW area is 7,000 children, leaving an estimated 3,300 children with no opportunity for foster placement. Since 2006, Jonathan’s Place has been recruiting, training, and supporting foster and foster-to- adopt families to ensure that every child has the opportunity to have a loving home.
Children with special needs can be especially challenging to place in the foster care system. Knowing this, in December of 2018, Jonathan’s Place expanded our license to include care for children with intellectual disabilities, children on the autism spectrum, and children determined to have been sex trafficked. With this license, we have been able to expand our amazing group of foster families to include homes uniquely qualified to care for children with special needs.

WE ANSWERED THE CALL TO TEACH
“
It is critical that each of these young ladies learn basic money management skills in
order to be successful in life and although it has its challenges, I am proud to be a part of making that happen.
–Frost Bank
Every year, there are more than 1,100 young adults in Texas who “age out” of foster care. Before they turn 21, a staggering number will struggle with unemployment, incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment. At Jonathan’s Place, we work to make sustainable changes in the lives of the young women aging out of foster care with little or no resources.
Residents in the Transitional Living Program must be working or enrolled in school. They are taught self-sufficiency through hands-on learning techniques that emphasize the development of educational, vocational, financial, domestic, and personal safety skills. The goal of the program is to prepare each resident for successful independent living.
“
SAFE PLACE
Jonathan’s Place is proud to serve as the Dallas County affiliate for the National Safe Place Program, a runaway prevention and education program for area youth. Through this program, we answer the call to help by
providing support to youth who have run away or suffered some form of abuse and have visited a Safe Place at any QuikTrip gas station or DART bus/train. We also provide on-site, educational trainings to middle and
high school students about the dangers of running away and human trafficking, providing them with alternatives and emergency numbers to text or call if they find themselves in need.
“All Jeff wanted to do was make it through high school. As a transgender youth, he was not welcome at home and found himself on the streets on one of the coldest nights in Dallas. He had learned about Safe Place from his school counselor so he went to the nearest QuikTrip. Jeff was picked up, taken to Jonathan’s Place, and is now flourishing in a facility in Plano where he can be himself.

The A Chance to Soar Luncheon is held every spring and is the single largest fundraiser for Jonathan’s Place. This event provides critical general operating and program support to ensure shelter and life changing services are available to abused and neglected children in their time
of need. The event, co-chaired by Johna Bolka and Kerry Schonwald, raised more than $232,000 with the help of an esteemed list of sponsors including Speaker Sponsors Brad & Rachel Stephens and a generous donation of AAdvantage miles from American Airlines in a special raffle.
For the 8th Annual A Chance to Soar Luncheon, held April 9th, 2019, more than 500 supporters filled the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Dallas
to hear “The Oprah of Radio,” Delilah, and answer the call to support the mission of Jonathan’s Place. Delilah shared her inspiring story of motherhood with 13 children, 10 of whom she adopted, and her mission to be a voice for children everywhere. The luncheon also included recognition of Texas Department of Public Safety with the Award of Service and Jonathan’s Place foster parents, Jessica and Brian Gardner with the Award of Compassion.
