Sappi InTouch 18_24

Sappi Head Of ce Internal Newsletter
My Story movie reminds us what’s important
They know the physical and emotional pain of being injured. They know that things can go horribly wrong in a split second.
The My Story Sappi safety movie that screened at Head Of ce last week brought a powerful message across: safety is non-negotiable. It is something we should be aware of always, everywhere.
Sharing their injury experiences openly and honestly, our seven colleagues from the SSA region prompted us to be more vigilant towards our own safety and that of others.
Lessons learnt by the movie’s seven safety warriors:
14 November 2018
1. Devan Ramsamy (Production Superintendent) suffered burn
wounds on 17% of his body after being burnt with acid:
“Never be complacent. I’ve learnt the importance of following procedures at all times. If there’s a problem, talk it through, instead of doing the wrong thing and getting hurt, or even worse, getting killed.”
2. Joshua Kistan’s (Will Cutter Operator) palm was cut open
after trying to apply tape to a sheet roll:
“It happened so quickly. I will never again underestimate the machinery I work with. I’m now far more cautious about my colleagues and my surroundings. I don’t want others to go through the same pain.”
3. André Nel (Engineering Hydraulic Fitter) sustained a
nasty cut to his hand after loading a huge tank on a forklift:
“Getting injured rst is the wrong way around to learn that you always need to be safe. Before doing any task, take a step
back and think about what needs to be done before rushing into it. If it’s not safe, rather get help or walk away.”
“Take nothing for granted. Especially when it comes to the isolation of machinery, always double check those isolations yourself and make sure it’s done correctly. If not, you could land up injured, disabled or even dead.”
“Don’t wait. Get serious about safety
right now, where you are. I share my story, because I don’t want others to rst face an incident before realising the importance of safety.”
6. Sipho Magubane (Management Forester) got caught in a
runaway veld re and ended up in hospital for almost two weeks:
“If your job requires you to wear proper PPE, do so at all times. I’m also very aware now of applying the safety principle of stopping and thinking before you act. It could save your life.”
7. Siphelele Mdakane (Land and Community Legal Counsel) was
injured in an accident at home when using a pressure cooker:
“Safety is for everyone, in all circumstances. We often take the impact of our daily chores at home for granted. We think accidents happen to others. I wish I could turn back the clock to stop, think and then act.”
4.
Mervin Liversage (Engineering
Fitter) had to have his hand and part of this arm amputated in an accident in the dryer section:
5.
Baryn Hulley (Chargehand
Operator) accidently dropped a scaffolding bar that bounced over the edge and fell on someone’s head down below:
01.
MY STORY ... shouldn’t be yours.
“I spent 7 days “I watched as my esh became “We were hit by a in ICU” detached from my body” burning furnace”
“I could have died that day”

My Story continued . . .
Ready to enjoy the movie and learn... (from left) André Schoeman, Matshediso
Moshoeshoe, Candice Mahlare, Christinah Sibiya and Preston Mayhew. Aubrey Billings, Brenda Luthers, Siyanda Gama and Nomawethu Nkomo.
What you said about the movie:
Fumani Nkuna, Learning Manager
“At some point it was painful to watch, especially the emotional impact suffered by my colleagues and their respective families. However, I enjoyed the story-telling approach. It is relatable and real. It made me more conscious of the potential consequence of my actions and the need to observe the health and safety rules, even in my personal space.”
Thanessa Moodley, Administration Manager
“It was really an eye-opener for me. I felt so emotional to see the stories from Sappi’s own people. It made me realise that an accident can happen in a second, and that it can change your life, and the lives of your family forever.”
Nomawethu Nkomo, Assistant Tax Accountant
“The movie reminded me of all my own unsafe habits and how detrimental they can be. The core message I got from the movie was that safety is my responsibility... and it is vital at work and at home.”
Brighton Hlatshwayo, Steve Binnie, Baryn Hulley and Glen Pearce. Brighton and Baryn, Brighton Hlatshwayo, Samantha Johns, Baryn Hulley and Sipho Ngubane. both from Saiccor Mill, were responsible for the production of the movie.

Life Saving Rules –
why do we need them?
We caught up with Regional Risk Services Manager Merten Jansen van Rensburg to nd out more.
Why are we introducing Life Saving Rules at Sappi?
} Safety has been incorporated into the Sappi value statement, entrenching it as a core business objective for Sappi.
} The Life Saving Rules look at risk areas that have the highest potential for serious injury, occupational illness or fatality as proven by incidents that occurred at Sappi.
} The Life Saving Rules entrench safety compliance as an organisational culture.
} These rules form part of Sappi’s ongoing commitment towards zero injuries.
} The rules highlight critical actions everybody at Sappi should take to protect themselves and others.

Sappi among industry- rst to
deploy SAP Sidecar
Sappi was somewhat of a slow starter at adopting SAP technology. We embraced this tool in the late 1990s, some 20 years after SAP was introduced. For the past two decades however, we have been loyal consumers of SAP systems.
In fact, nowadays we can claim our leadership in digital transformation. Globally, we deployed the latest version of SAP Business Suite for HANA (S4 HANA), thus enabling us to adopt newer technologies in the Cloud Applications space. This enables us to operate nimbler within this arena.
SAP Sidecar
In doing so, certain features enabling our business processes in the Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene functional area, had to be shifted from the classic SAP ECC system to a new home, the SAP HR system. In the SAP industry this is referred to as a ‘Sidecar’.
As the name suggests, this SAP system sits alongside the SAP digital core S4 HANA system. Whilst SAP recommends that this nature of build takes anywhere between one and one-and-a-half years to deploy, our team executed this huge shift in only nine months, and well within budget.
“Not only did the team execute with speed, but the enormous amount of self-engineered, internal technical planning and thought put into this solution are also worth noting,” commented Project Manager Koosh Panday. “Sappi has become an industry leader within the SAP Africa User Group, and the preferred point of contact when our industry colleagues enquire about lessons to be learnt in their SAP S4 HANA Sidecar deployment cycles.”
From left: A great team effort by Sylvia Jenkins, Koosh Panday, Shelewe Matlala, Chris Erasmus and Christo Janse van Rensburg. They were at the forefront of the SAP Sidecar transition, supported by back-of ce staff and fellow colleagues that assisted with the testing cycle and future proo ng of the system.

Sappi helps to change lives
at Jabulani
Jabulani Training and Development recently held a graduation ceremony in KwaThema, where Sappi was
well received as sponsor for this Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme.
14 November 2018
Jabulani staff joined on stage by Sappi’s Khethiwe Hlubi ( fth left) and Sipho Sipho Ngubane (seventh left) and the founder of this organisation, Jabulani Mkhize (right).
A total of 100 students graduated on the day: Early Childhood Development (ECD) NQF Level 1, ECD NQF Level 4 and ECD NQF Level 5 (Assessors).
Of these graduates, 48 were sponsored by Sappi. They presented ECD NQF Level 5: Early Childhood Development.
The Higher Certi cate in Early Childhood Development will help graduates develop their skills to provide appropriate education, training and developmental services in the ECD sub- eld.
This will also enable them to use their knowledge of child growth and development (from birth to nine years), supported by relevant national policies, to guide their professional practice.
About Jabulani
