Sappi InTouch 19_01

Sappi Head Office Internal Newsletter
2019: Let’s make Sappi great
To all our staff members and contractors: welcome back and may the year ahead bring lots of joy, peace and prosperity to you and your loved ones.
17 January 2019
For Sappi, it will be a year of capacity growth, with a strong focus on completing or continuing projects as we seek to
use our raw materials better and finding alternative markets to optimise our waste streams. Controlling costs, especially variable costs, will also remain a priority.
As individuals, we can all play a part in helping the business grow and prosper.
In between making new year’s resolutions, take a moment to think about the question: How can I help to make Sappi great in the year ahead?
This is what some of our colleagues had to say:

Sanele Nkomo, Compliance Manager
“I will do my bit by living the Sappi values. I realise that creating a positive change starts with me, so I intend
to make Sappi a wonderful place to work by supporting my colleagues and making them smile.”
Ntswaki Masiteng, Internal Audit Intern
“I endeavour to make a difference at Sappi by finding new, innovative and creative ways to complete my tasks in a more efficient and effective manner.”
1. Start small. Commit to things that are actually attainable. Keep your goals clear and simple.
2. Change one behaviour at
a time. You don’t have to reassess your life all in one go.
3. Talk about it. Use all the help you can get. Share your goals with family and friends, ask them to monitor your progress. Or join a support group that addresses the goal you are working towards. Sharing your journey with others helps to keep you accountable.
4. Go easy on yourself. Minor missteps on your journey to reach your goal is completely normal. Stop, reassess, adjust and move forward.
 James Manana, General Manager: Employee Relations and HR Operations
“I will continue my efforts to improve Sappi’s shared value initiatives in the communities where we operate.”
 Brenda Khumalo, Receptionist and Switchboard Supervisor
“I would like to participate and
support all safety campaigns and be an example to my team that we can really have an accident-free working environment.”

Finances
A new year: Get your finances on track
The start of a new year is often a challenging time, at least where your bank account is concerned. Waiting for the next pay slip while still recovering from your December spending can feel like an eternity.

Fortunately, a new year is also a time for new goals and renewed focus. What do you want from your finances this year? What past mistakes do you wish to avoid?
Set your goals
It’s helpful to think of your personal finances as a business, and of yourself as the CEO. In order to run your business effectively, you must set tangible goals and measure your progress.
Money is only as valuable as the things you spend it on. Sadly, most of us tend to waste too much of our hard-earned salaries on impulse purchases and spend the rest on the first bills that arrive.
Setting financial goals will help you manage your monthly spending to ensure that you don’t miss important payments and that you spend your money in ways that add real value to your life. Impulsive or reactive spending only leads to regret and prevents you from maximising the value of your income.
Whether you want to put down a deposit on a house, plan your dream family vacation, invest in education or simply pay off your debt, setting goals with measurable monthly milestones will help you get there.
Draw up a spending plan
Once you’ve written down your financial goals, create a monthly spending plan for your household to make sure you guide your monthly cash flow accordingly.
Draw up a spending plan by looking at your average monthly income, expenses and debts. Make sure you have enough money for your essential expenses and plan ahead to make provision for savings, emergencies, holidays and school expenses throughout the year.
A spending plan will also allow you to see when you are spending too much on luxury or unnecessary expenses.
Start saving for next year’s expenses
If you have children, you will know that school fees and supplies can make a big dent in your January budget – when you have the least money to spare. This year, do yourself a favour and start saving up for next year’s school fees far in advance.
February and March is also the best time to shop for next year’s school clothes and supplies, as many stores will have sales to clear their stock after the back-to-school rush. Also, remember to budget for all those extracurricular activities.

Up close with...

Leola Britton, Group Organisational Development Manager
Seeing the sights in London with her Spanish beau, Paco Cervantes.
1. I’m happiest when... I have a glass of wine in one hand, surrounded
by my nearest and dearest and shooting the breeze.
2. When I feel stressed out I... either put my ear phones on and hit the gym or head out to the closest hiking trail or outdoor spot to calm my nerves.
3. My most treasured possession is... my mobile phone. It contains pictures of good memories and moments that I treasure, enough apps to ensure that I’m but a phone call, Whatsapp, Facebook or Instagram message away from people and things that I care about the most.
4. I laughed out loud... every day. Life is too short to be miserable.
5. I’m inspired by...people who dare to make their dreams a reality.
6. I can’t live without... books, wine, good food (made by someone else), excellent company, my dog, Netflix and peace.
7. My favourite read is... Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for mindless entertainment, as well as the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee to feed my soul.
8. I love watching... people and observing how they interact with one another. You can tell a lot about a person or a relationship by just observing body language.
9. My favourite holiday spot is... Port Elizabeth. It is my home town and has many hidden treasures – spotless beaches, excellent hiking trails, great restaurants, amazing nature reserves and the Eastern Cape province’s Big 7. And the locals are super friendly. For travel overseas, it has to be Spain for the people, sights, culture and food.
10. In my spare time... actually I’m not sure what spare time is, but my boyfriend and I do like to pretend that we’re tourists in Joburg. We enjoy exploring the many things
to do in the city on the weekend.
I also do the occasional outdoor yoga class, fitness event or Parkrun together with friends. And a good old South African braai is always a winner in my friendship circle.
11. My first job was... as a fitting room assistant at Woolworths when I
was in high school and university.
I remember giving unsolicited style advice to customers.
12. What people at Sappi don’t know about me is... that I don’t really have any secrets or hidden talents.
I wear my heart on my sleeve and what you see is pretty much all there is.
13. I love working at Sappi because... the people and leadership that work here are inspiring, and the future at Sappi is filled with promises – something that I would like to be part of.

Want to get fit? Five peaceful running routes
Training for the JP Morgan Challenge taking place on 28 March this year? Here’s a round-up of the best running trails – from inner city parks to beautiful game reserves.
Take note: Entries to be part of Team Sappi at the JP Morgan Challenge close on 25 January 2019.
Some of the top running trails in and around Joburg include:
1 Braamfontein Spruit
Most of the Braamfontein Spruit runs between Emmarentia Dam and Sunninghill, so there are many
options when choosing a route. A popular choice, however, is the 4.3km route south of Emmarentia Dam. The trail leads runners in a circular route through the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens (which borders Emmarentia Dam) and back to the starting point.
4. Zoo Lake
The park is situated around a small lake and joggers can run the circular route to their heart’s content. The total
distance is just under one kilometre and the terrain is flat, making it ideal for running. Zoo Lake is relatively shaded, and frequented by runners, walkers and picnickers alike. Parking is available and security patrols the area.
5.
the bustling city. The reserve is home to Johannesburg’s most popular mountainbiking trails and also hosts the WildJoburg, a challenging trail running event. Wildlife is abundant and includes zebra, black wildebeest, jackal, mongoose and more. The
trails are mostly single track and include plenty of climbing and technical sections for those who are after a bit of a rush. You can either choose the 5km, 10km or 20km trails.
Safety tip: Wherever you decide to run, always be vigilant and be aware of your surroundings. Try to run in a group and don’t carry valuables with you. If you decide to run alone, always make sure that someone knows where you are going and when to expect you home.
2.
Kings Kloof running trails are complemented by valleys, river crossings, natural pools and amazing views. Trails are well- marked but tough, so take enough water and sun protection. The trail starts as one route, before splitting into three different difficulty variations covering a total distance of 22.5km.
3. Cradle of Humankind
The Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to many important archaeological discoveries
and the area is popular among cyclists and runners alike. Whether you’d like to hit the tarmac solo or register for a race, the options are endless.

Early detection saves lives
CANSA together with Bestmed are offering a free SureTouch breast scan to female Bestmed members and spouses (on a first come, first serve basis) at Sappi Head Office Clinic, Ground floor on 06 February 2019.
Why do a breast scan?
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. This computer-based test is a non-evasive, pain-free way to detect the possibility of abnormalities in breast tissue.
A handheld sensor is placed on the breast’s surface. When pressure is applied, an equal and opposing response pressure is exerted. ‘Hard/stiff’ structures will produce specific responses, displayed on a specialised computer screen.
How will it affect my Bestmed benefits?
As a Bestmed member (or spouse), the scan is free and will not influence your Bestmed preventative care benefits. After doing the scan, regardless of the outcome, you can
still visit a GP/specialist to do a mammogram (which will be covered from your normal available benefits – preventative or savings).
Book your appointment today for your breast scan
To make an appointment email Surprise Maluwa at [email protected]
Please provide the following information:
• Your name and surname
• Cell phone numbers
• Your Bestmed membership number.
SureTouch
CANSA pioneered the latest technology for safe breast examinations. It is not a diagnostic tool, but used for pre-screening.
Explored and verified by CANSA, the SureTouch screening device travels to urban, semi-urban and rural communities across the country to deliver safe and easy breast examinations.
