Year-end charity drive: Let’s
all donate towards the Santa
Shoebox Project
Wouldn’t it be great to bring some joy to a less fortunate child this festive season (especially after a challenging year, where so many people struggled to make ends meet)?
As you know, Sappi Head Office will once again support the Santa Shoebox Project. This national charity programme collects and distributes personalised gifts
of essential items and treats to underprivileged children.
Each department has been asked to fill at least five Santa shoeboxes (valued at ZAR400 each) by
03 November 2020. You can do your bit by donating items from the list below:
• Toothpaste
• Toothbrush
• Bar of soap
• Face cloth
• An outfit of clothing
• Educational supplies
• Sweets
• A toy
Also consider including a reusable shopping bag for the child to carry their shoebox home in. The shoebox should be decorated but not sealed.
A reminder of how it works:
1. Departments can collaborate this year. Each HOD has received five tags and five boxes. Each tag will display a child’s name, age, gender and clothing size.
2. All boxes are to be submitted to your EWB floor representative before 03 November 2020.
3. For more information, email Khethiwe.Hlubi@sappi.com.
The Santa shoeboxes will be dropped off on Friday,
06 November 2020.
More about the Santa Shoebox Project
It originated in Cape Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes.
In 14 years, it has grown in leaps and bounds, with the number of Santa shoeboxes donated reaching a total of 957,297. The shoeboxes are distributed to more than
1,000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia.

All systems go for Sappi Safety Awards 2020
As we move into the new financial year, we are pleased to announce that a new date for the 2020 Sappi Safety Awards has been established. The event is now scheduled to take place on 18 November.
The event will be live streamed from Head Office which will give more people the opportunity to attend the awards event virtually.
The 2020 event will be made even more special with our forestry, nursery and research colleagues also participating in the event.
We look forward to celebrating the great safety achievements of our colleagues and
contractors. ‘As OneSappi, we do business safely, with integrity and courage, making smart decisions that we execute with speed.’
Continue to work safely and remember: “I value life”
Saloshni Govender (2019 winner: Safety Representative – Mill Award Stanger Mill)
How important is it to have safety awards?
I think it’s vitally important. These
awards get the entire Sappi family talking about safety. And every minute spent on safety is a minute well spent.
Why is safety so important to you?
We spend more time at work than with our families, so the people you work with become your family too. The thought of anyone getting hurt at work really bothers me.
Hermien van der Merwe (2019 winner: Safety Conscious Employee Mill Award – Ngodwana Mill)
What is the role of the Sappi Safety Awards?
Many people feel that safety is like a stick:
a stick to reprimand
anyone who steps out
of line. This perception
is wrong. We need to
promote and encourage
safe behaviour so that we
can all stay alive and healthy, and the company can prosper.
What did the win mean to you personally?
It gave me hope that the 2019 awards will be the start of a wave of change around the perception of safety in our business.

Thrive25: Growing segments that matter
Sappi will be looking to maximise output through diversification and achievement of best in class efficiencies. This will include the commercialisation of products with sustainability advantages, like furfural and xylitol, the continuation of improvements in energy and water, reduction in waste, and an increased use of own and renewable energy.
Product segment strategies for packaging include new investments for improved quality offerings and growing margins through efficiency, integration and substitution.
Focus areas:
• The goal for Dissolving Pulp (DP) is to remain in the lowest cost quartile, while maximising volumes with contract customers and growing with the market.
• For the graphics, tissue and sawmilling segments, we are looking at growing Typek’s local footprint, and moving into niche markets with tissue and shelving. Ultimately, we will be pushing to manage cost, grow volume and mix to improve EBITDA margin.
• In the forestry segment, we are looking at reducing costs by improving efficiencies, while seeking additional revenue streams in terms of trade.
• Exciting opportunities are also presenting themselves within the biotech segment, where there is a strong demand for biobased products and a growing range of applications.

To live financially free... you need to budget
The expansion of the lyocell product offering and strengthening of the Verve brand is paramount.
Five good reasons to start budgeting
1. It keeps you focused on long term goals and helps you to reach them.
2. It helps you save for a happy retirement; you won’t leave it to chance.
3. It helps you prepare for emergencies, by putting enough money away.
4. It sheds light on bad spending habits, so you can change them.
5. It contributes to a good night’s rest, so you won’t lose sleep over finances again.

Wellness talks: adding more value to your life
We’ve all been through a lot this year. Our stress levels may be sky high and our levels of patience and tolerance plummeting, which is why Sappi’s wellness talks are so beneficial.
How to strengthen relationships under pressure During this talk held on
30 September, social worker Karen Badenhorst highlighted that stress creates distance, disagreements and disconnection in our relations. It’s crucial to practice self care habits and master the skills needed to maintain healthy relationships, including listening, understanding, and dealing carefully with confrontation and conflict.
She also discussed the five love languages in relationships: physical touch, acts of service, words of affirmation, quality time and receiving gifts. Giving someone love and support where needed, will help create a new level of connecting that brings you closer together.
Work-life balance: How to set manageable boundaries During this wellness talk held on
14 October, Karen discussed how effectively work-life boundaries can reduce role conflict and enhance the wellbeing of employees, teams, and Sappi as a whole. It can also reduce stress, prevent burnout, and enhance mental and physical health.
She highlighted the importance of having a routine, and also discussed the four types of time to take
into consideration when setting boundries: activity time, alone time, one-on-one time and family time.
If you want to develop meaningful relationships while maintaining
a work-life balance, then drawing functional, flexible boundaries in all aspects of your life is crucial.
Be sure to catch the next wellness talk on Wednesday, 28 October 2020 at 09:00. The theme is ‘Stress Management’. Look out for the MS Teams invite.
See you there!

Getting Sappi POPIA compliant
Why it’s important for all of us
Handling personal information with care and respect is critical to protect our reputation. Mishandled personal information can have serious repercussions for organisations, their employees and customers. It’s very important that we all understand what POPIA compliance means.
• Sappi needs customer, supplier and employee personal information (PI) to run the business successfully. We are trusted to look after this PI.
• The Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (‘POPI’ or ‘POPIA’ ) came into force in July 2020 to ensure that PI is protected.
• Everyone who processes PI must ensure that they are fully compliant with POPI by July 2021.
When Sappi collects and uses the PI of another (individual, company, prospective or actual employee, student applying for a bursary, visitor to our offices, customer querying or to whom Sappi provides products to, a vendor or service provider who provides Sappi with goods/ services) – we must ensure the following:
• PI collected is used by Sappi only for the purpose collected
• PI is not distributed to unauthorised parties
• PI is kept safe and secure
• PI is kept for the required period and then
deleted or destroyed.
You are our best defence against reputational damages and financial penalties.
Visit the POPIA information hub on Sappi Net for all you need to know about the Act. Or reach out to Amanda Tregoning or our POPIA information officer, Maarten van Hoven, if you have any questions.
