What staff say ...
Brenda Luthers, Regional Treasury Controller: “I‘ve been with Sappi for
the past ve years, travelling with the Gautrain. Moving to Rosebank has bene ted me a lot. Walking to and from the station is closer and much safer now. The new building looks amazing. The feel is fresh, and it makes one feel excited to come to work.”
Lidia Proenca, Executive Secretary:
“I left home quite excited about my
new journey to work. Driving through Houghton Green Avenue was refreshing. Being able to just drive through the boom, was effortless. The ladies room was clean, fresh and modern and it felt like I was in Sandton Mall! And nothing is better than starting day one off with a great cup of Arabica coffee.”
Phindiwe Mbekeni, Credit Controller:
“The positives of our new of ce space are that it provides comfort, more effective functioning and a space geared to reduce health and safety risks. I also appreciate that it’s more colourful compared to the old building – each oor colour with its own signi cance. Red is associated with ambition and vitality, which is in line with Sappi’s values.”

Heritage Day:
an explosion of
colour and style
Did you know
The rst Heritage Day was commemorated in SA in 1995. Before that, in KwaZulu-Natal, it was known as Shaka Day, celebrating the Zulu king, Shaka. Today, this public holiday is
also referred to by some as National Braai Day – another way in which we celebrate our cultural diversity.
Each year on Heritage Day (24 September), South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.
Staff at Sappi head of ce made full use of this opportunity by dressing up in traditional wear. This was one of the last events to be held at our former of ces in Braamfontein.

Saving an endangered species, one tree
at a time
In celebration of Arbour Week and as part of the Gauteng International Arts Festival, Sappi recently donated six Pepper Bark trees, which were planted at the Brooklyn Theatre in Pretoria by Alex Thiel (CEO, Sappi Southern Africa) and representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Dendrological Society and the Of ce of the Mayor of Tshwane.
The endangered Pepper Bark (Warburgia Salutaris) – highly sought-after for its multiple medicinal uses – has been saved from extinction thanks to a long-term commitment by Sappi, SANParks, the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), SANBI (South African National Bioinformatics Institute) and Priscillavale Farms (a private seed supplier in KZN).
Started in 2013, the project has, to date, enabled over 30,000 new trees to be propagated for distribution.
Alex Thiel (back, third right), joined by dignitaries and school learners during the planting of Pepper Bark trees in commemoration of Arbor Week and as part of the Gauteng International Arts Festival. The learners were invited as part of the Trees are Life prize-giving, which celebrated the value of trees in the form of poetry, art and essay writing.
Stay safe when using Wi-Fi
Wireless networks in public areas such as airports and restaurants are a convenient way stay connected while travelling or relaxing with friends. But these networks also pose great risks to your online safety.
Keep these tips in mind when using a public Wi-Fi hotspot:
Be aware of your surroundings. Make sure no one is peering over your shoulder when you log in to your operating system, eMail, instant messaging (IM) or other accounts.
Never leave your laptop or handheld device unattended – not even for a moment.
Don’t allow your wireless card to automatically join the nearest network. Instead, manually select the hotspot when you connect.
Make sure you’re on a legitimate hotspot by checking with the host to con rm the network name and connection process.
Turn off le sharing when you’re using a hotspot, and try to minimise the amount of sensitive, personal data stored on your laptop and mobile devices. You can usually turn off le sharing from your operating system’s network settings menu.
Don’t do online banking or trading at a public hotspot. Save it for a more safe and controlled environment.
Limit eMail and IM to casual communications. If you use IM or eMail at hotspots, never send anything that should not be made public. Consider setting up an extra web-based eMail account to use at hotspots.
Don’t surf websites you wouldn’t want a stranger to know you’re viewing.
Turn off your wireless card when it’s not in use.
When using a public hotspot, your device is vulnerable to virus infections and hackers prowling the network. Make sure it is protected by reputable antivirus software. Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security – both from Symantec – are safe options.
