Mandela Day brings relief for women and children
In commemoration of International Nelson Mandela Day, Sappi Head Office visited the Frida Hartley Shelter for destitute women and children with gifts of food parcels, Sappi hand sanitiser and cloth face masks. Sappi continuously strives
to make a difference in surrounding communities by taking #ActionAgainstPoverty, because we are #StrongerTogether.
Sappi volunteers with the donated goods that have been delivered to the Frida Hartley Shelter as part of our Mandela Day outreach.

Thrive25 paves the way for a prosperous business
As we enter a new era with revised goals and commitments, Sappi has unveiled the Thrive25 strategy to guide the company towards a sustainable, profitable future.
To this end, we commit to our core business segments, whilst investing in innovation, growth opportunities and ongoing customer relations.
Through innovations like hemicellulose sugar extraction, furfural derived from C5 sugars, and dissolving pulp products used worldwide by converters to produce viscose fibre, Sappi continues to add value to the business and ensure its sustainability.
Key focus areas to ensure a thriving business:
Ask Alex sessions – “A real platform for conversation”
The ‘Ask Alex’ roadshow sessions, of which the
second one was recently held online to introduce Sappi’s Thrive25 strategy to staff, provides an effective platform for engagement between management and employees. What do you think of this means of communication? Tell us by sending an email to [email protected].

Achieving targeted returns from capital projects in which we have invested
Deliver future growth through advances in technology, analytics and understanding of our customers’ needs Product and process innovations that will create value and growth.
Melanie Jacobs – Regional Learning Manager says:
“I’m very impressed by our leaders’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic and
their encouragement to work safely, whilst ensuring that we will have a job to come back
to. In addition, the sharing of information on Thrive25 gives us hope for the future and it is something to look forward to. The way Alex answers questions – honestly and directly – is also great. This is a real platform for conversation, and not just a one- sided roadshow.”

We anticipate growth in virgin packaging paper and dissolving pulp (DP), although new competition in the DP market will necessitate a focus on low cost initiatives.

2 Fumani Nkuna (Learning Manager - HR):
Yes Norman, it was a reminder that Sappi Performance Enablement was launched on 17 March 2020, and that it was important for managers and employees to have discussions around quality goalsetting, regular coaching and simple performance reviews.
4 Fumani: I know. COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the business, and I understand that employees are worried and anxious about the way forward, BUT Performance Enablement is going to play a vital role to make sure Sappi remains sustainable.
6
Fumani: Through clearly defined performance goals and objectives discussed between managers and employees. These are very difficult market conditions the business is facing, and we need to make sure that the business can adjust to the changing needs of the economy. It’s vital that each employee knows exactly what is expected of him/ her to keep Sappi sustainable going forward.

Norman: In what way?
Norman Raluthaga (IT Systems Administrator), via Skype Call: Hi Fumani, I remember seeing a notice from Fergus recently about Performance Enablement.

Norman: Ok, thanks Fumani. I’m beginning to understand that the business must go on. So how is it going to work?
Fumani: Well, the HR Business Partners throughout SSA are talking to the line managers and their teams to support the move from the old SAP performance review system to the new performance enablement system.
Norman: So this is happening right now?
Fumani: Yes, definitely. Employees within the Non-Bargaining Unit (HRL13 and above) have to follow the new approach to create aligned SMART goals in preparation for the year-end review in September 2020. Your HR Business Partners will be in contact to ensure that you are trained and well supported to enable the transition.
As part of the transition from SAP Performance Management to the Sappi Performance Enablement approach - which
is supported through the Sappi Learning (Cornerstone) system - the SAP functionality has been locked for editing. You will, however, be able to view your objectives in the interim.
Norman: Thank you so much for the update, Fumani. I now know why Performance Enablement is so important and I understand who to contact should I need any further information.

COVID-19:
7 ways to prevent infection
COVID-19 is a serious threat to our health and safety. Make sure you follow these protocols in common areas.
1. Don’t sit down for tea or a meal in a tearoom/canteen if you cannot maintain a two metre distance from others.
5. Never share food or utensils, or a cup or glass, or drink from the same bottle with others.
6. Please wash
your own utensils.
7. Do not enter a smoking area if you cannot maintain a two metre distance.
Remember:
• Safety comes before everything else! • COVID-19 protocols must be
followed at all times
• There will be ZERO TOLERANCE
for non-compliance.
2. Spend as little time as possible in the pause area/ pantry to reduce your exposure to others in a confined space.
3. Sanitise the table and chair before and after your tea or lunch break.
4. Always wash/ sanitise your hands
before removing your mask to eat and again before putting your mask back on.
06.

COVID-19: How distance, dose and dispersion interact
The three Ds - distance, dose and dispersion - are interconnected. Understand how they interact and minimise your risk of becoming infected.
Sappi Head Office Internal Newsletter
If you are outdoors, preferably two metres apart from others, for less than 15 minutes, your risk of becoming infected is incredibly low.
On the other hand, if you are stuck in a room with closed windows, with someone with symptoms, your risk of getting infected increases - whether or not you wear a cloth mask.
Large known outbreaks have arisen at indoor functions - eg in churches, at weddings, music events and restaurants; places where a crowd of
people are indoors, close together and talking or singing for hours.
Physical distancing is very effective when outdoors or for short encounters (15 minutes). Once you are in a closed space, its effectiveness dramatically diminishes.
Important:
Masks and two-metre distancing are not enough if you are with people in an unventilated space all day.
In summary:
• Make sure there is ample ventilation when you are indoors • Avoid crowded spaces
• If you have a choice, rather spend time outdoors
• Wear a mask and keep your social distance, but also
minimise the length of time that you are among other people.
