The Aberdeen Open

The Aberdeen Open is a Sport Karate and Kickboxing competition open to all held on the last weekend in April each
year.
The event has been running successfully since 2016 by WKC Scotland, growing more each year and attracting hundreds
soon to be thousands to the Granite City.
The World Karate & Kickboxing Commission Scotland started out life as Team Scotland, a team made up of competitors
from several Martial Arts clubs representing their country at events around the world.
We have teams from all over the UK and the world, including Guatemala, Canada, USA, Germany and France attending
this competition, bringing tourism and sport to our city.
Whats next?
With your help we would like to take this fantastic event to world class levels.
To provide comparison, the largest kickboxing tournament in the world is the Irish Open, a tournament run in Dublin,
Ireland each year. This event is full each year with a 4000 competitor limit, with at least one significant other on average
attending with each.
With the move of our event to the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, we believe that by continuing to manage
this event well, we can safely exceed these numbers in the years to come and make the Aberdeen Open the premier
Martial Arts event, but we need the cities help to achieve this!
In order to build this event and continue to attract the best of the best from all over the world, this event needs to be
the best. We recognise that our team is reaching its limits, and that we need help!
We are working with several agencies and local charities, such as Visit Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Football Club
Community Trust, but what is really needed is the help and assistance of local companies and other trusts that can assist
us both financially and with advice.
Why do we need funds?
In order to grow this event, we need to look at controlling and reducing our costs, whilst never compromising on safety.
Our current plans include purchasing our own safety matts and scoreboards, rather than hiring each year, leading to an
annual saving on the event. Judges and referees training, an annual consideration, though if we can

WKC SCOTLAND

Founded by Malcolm Evans, a Martial Arts instructor and veteran with a vision of making our sport accessible to all, the
World Karate and Kickboxing Commission (WKC) Scotland has developed into an organisation seeking to provide good
governance to the sport in Scotland, encourage greater collaboration between the various clubs in Scotland, to have
Sport Karate and Kickboxing recognised in Scotland, and most importantly, to encourage public participation in our
Sport.
The member clubs of WKC Scotland have in place sound practices for ensuring they provide a safe environment for their
students, young and old, and continue to develop the expertise available to their students through ongoing training
programmes provided through WKC Scotland.
These programs vary from Safeguarding and Protecting Children, First Aid, Dietetics and Nutrition; to Growth and body
development. This continuous professional development will help ensure that our participants not only develop safely,
but develop as an all-round athlete with the right information and assistance on hand to help ensure they can reach
their desired level of achievement.
WKC Scotland hold seminars throughout the year, open to all, to help encourage active participation in our sport and
allow others to learn more about Martial Arts and the benefits which can be seen.
WKC Scotland, and its board of Trustees, believe in strong ethical practices and adhere to the WKC Scotland Code of
Conduct.

BENEFITS OF OUR SPORT

Total Body Workout: Martial arts is a high-aerobic workout that uses every muscle group in the body. Stamina, muscle
tone, flexibility, balance and strength all improve through martial arts.

Self Confidence: Due to the goal setting, positive encouragement and respect for values that are an integral part of all
martial arts programs, the greatest benefit usually reported by martial arts students is greater self-confidence.

Improved Cardiovascular Health: Research has found that the only real way to improve the status of the cardiovascular
system is by participating in activities that stress the heart, such as martial arts.

Weight Loss: A one hour session of moderate intensity martial arts can burn up to 500 calories.

Improved Reflexes: Research has found that by participating in martial arts, you not only improve your reflexes while
performing the activity, but actually experience faster reaction times during all activities of your life. This is very
important in a number of daily activities, such as driving.

Focus and Stillness: Behind the punches, kicks and knees, a true martial artist learns to see where their weaknesses
are. As a martial artist, participants learn what it is to be still, challenged and focused.

Teaches Great Morals and Values: Martial arts are renowned for their focus on good morals and values. These form
the core of any Martial Arts program. This reminds students of the right attitude, frame of mind and virtues to strive
for inside and outside the Dojo setting strict boundaries and providing good role models for children and adults alike.

Muscle Tone: By participating in martial arts, you can greatly improve the amount of muscle mass you have in your
body. The higher your muscle mass, the higher your metabolic demands will be, and subsequently the more calories
you will burn each day, thereby helping prevent obesity and promote weight loss. High levels of muscle mass also lead
to increased agility.

Better Mood: Researchers have found that participating in a regular exercise routine is one of the best ways to improve
your mood. Performing martial arts is not only a good way to relieve stress and frustration, but may actually help to
make you happier. The endorphins released by physical activity continue to be active in your body for as many as four
hours after exercise.

Mental Strength: A successful practice of martial arts requires a large amount of mental fortitude. Some of martial arts’
most traditional tenets - such as indomitable spirit and perseverance - stress the importance of fighting through
preconceived limits. Discipline might be the biggest trait that leads to success in martial arts. Knowing you have a
challenge up ahead and developing the discipline needed to achieve that is an important life skill that will translate to
many other areas of your life.

Another important aspect of martial arts is feeling, accepting and controlling your emotions. By practicing martial arts,
you will feel anger, fear, frustration and anxiety, at some point. The way you deal with these emotions will help you
grow mentally. This will also help in everyday life with how you deal with others, from workplace discussions to family
disagreements.

GOVERNANCE

Child Protection

We believe strongly in ensuring we provide a safe place for any child wishing to take part in our Sport.

We have in place robust procedures, developed from the best practices provided by Sport Scotland, and actively seek
to train all Trustees, Coaches, Referees, Judges and Volunteers in Child Protection. Further to this, we are registered
with Disclosure Scotland to ensure that all of the above are PVG checked.

Health and Safety

In order to ensure a safe place for all, we recognise that sound health and safety practices are a must. As such we
provide relevant health and safety advice to all member clubs, training were required and a health and safety pack to
help ensure they go above and beyond their basic legal requirements.

As a contact sport, we recognise that from time to time there may be injuries, firstly we seek to reduce the chances of
this where possible, though we have also put in place opportunities for all Coaches, Referees, Judges and Volunteers to
receive First Aid Training suitable to the sport, and make everyone aware of the requirements for First Aid cover.

Anti-Doping

WKC Scotland is committed to the fight against doping in Sport.

It is completely against the integrity of any Martial Art and is counter to the WKC Scotland core principles.

Whether by accident or on purpose, doping is against the rules of sport. We have UK anti-Doping trained advisers on
hand to provide advice to athletes and coaches, and a strict anti doping policy which we enforce in full.

Code of Conduct

WKC Scotland, in line with the recommendations of national organisations such as Sport Scotland, encourages
Instructors, member Clubs, Referees, Judges, Volunteers and Parents to conduct themselves to the highest standards
at all times.

These high standards ensure the safe, fun and progressive participation of all those taking part. Positive early
experiences can ensure that each person has an opportunity to reach their desired level of achievement and experience
an effective transition to the competitive and recreational structures of the Sport.

Trustees

All of our trustees are bound by the strict requirements of law and governance of the Office of the Scottish Charity
regulator (OSCR), as well as the OSCR approved WKC Scotland Constitution.
