# 101 / Mastering Ripplefold Draperies with Karen Barnes
With their smooth, contemporary folds that glide across the window, it’s easy to see why ripplefold

... yet, they can appear daunting. Fear not, Karen Barnes will help you navigate fullness, master
carriers, carrier counts and “rippling” to pattern. She’ll also discuss snap tape vs. wave tape,
fabricating with no visible stitching, specifying hardware, fabricating a double-sided ripplefold panel
and more!

A customer asks whether you make slipcovers, and you respond with an enthusiastic “Yes!” even
though you have absolutely no idea where to begin. Jessica Arey has your back. She’ll share how
she gathers quality information to prequalify a slipcover project and close the sale. Jessica will also
discuss the Slipcovering vs. Reupholstering debate and answer The Prewashing Question. Plus, you’ll
learn about her pricing menu, and her fabrication process that includes draping a muslin.
#103 / Running a Workroom With Your iPad with Ceil DiGuglielmo and Elki Horn
You bought the latest iPad to easily check emails and shoot photos for your Facebook business
page, but now what? Elki Horn and Ceil DiGuglielmo will show you how they record and retrieve
measurements, photos, estimates and invoices, as well as access their vendor catalogs all from their
iPads. They’ll review Dropbox, Evernote, GoodNotes, iBooks, LastPass and Siri, and show you how to
save time and become more efficient and productive.

valance patterns. She’ll share a slideshow and physical samples detailing how she modified the
Squire valance pattern and added shawl cascades.

and show you how to assess the frame for issues, select materials and stitch in springs. Plus, you’ll

How do we love stationary Roman shades? Let us count the ways: lower cost, no headrail, less
fabric, more control over the finished length and, therefore, more control over pattern placement.
Rosemarie Garner will show you how to apply ribs, use a template to calculate rib placement and
fabric amounts, calculate the finished length based on the shroud cord, and much more. Please
bring: two 1½-yard pieces of buckram (any width) and one 18-inch ruler.

Tuesday, October 2, 2018, 8:30 am – 10:00 am Keynote Address
#500 / Transforming Our World, One Stitch at a Time (Included for all attendees)
When their worlds came crashing down, there was nothing left for Lonnie Vanderslice and Kelly
Wilson to do but pull out their high school sewing machines and get to work. Started in a Kansas City,
Mo., basement, Weave Gotcha Covered! has grown from a two-woman part-time side job into an
award-winning custom soft-furnishings workroom and design studio with 6,500 square feet of space
and 19 employees. To better the world through sewing, this social enterprise employs women
returning to the community from challenging life circumstances, including addiction and
incarceration. Join Kelly and Lonnie as they share the lessons of this life-altering journey.
Lonnie Vanderslice is co-founder of Weave Gotcha Covered!, but her favorite
“hat” is as the community engagement liaison, a role that allows her to
capitalize on her passion of working with women facing barriers to
employment. Lonnie is also co-founder and executive director of The Sewing
Labs, a nonprofit vocational learning center teaching sewing arts in the urban
core. In this role, Lonnie partners with various local entities to form a pipeline of
job-ready individuals with the goal of fostering economic self-sufficiency.
Her early career was in the clinical laboratory. When computers entered the
medical field, Lonnie switched to clinical information systems consulting,
providing information system implementation expertise nationwide, and then
moved on to the telecommunications arena where she honed her business
expertise.
Lonnie holds a master’s degree in divinity from Unity Institute, and an undergraduate degree in medical
technology from Northwest Missouri State University. She is also on staff at a local women’s transitional housing
facility, serving as a peer level Missouri Recovery Support Specialist. She can be heard weekly on her online
radio show, Spirit of Recovery, and has recently joined the faculty at Unity Worldwide Spiritual Institute.
Kelly Wilson is CEO and co-founder of Weave Gotcha Covered! A lifelong
autodidact, she has always had a passion for living “outside the box.” A
combination of varied job experiences from New York City to L.A, along with
an eclectic higher education has created the rich foundation for Kelly’s life.
As a result of the economic downturn and after 17 years of exploring the world
“unschooling” her two daughters, Kelly found herself in the job market in 2005.
Without a professional career to resume, she found a $5-an-hour job at a local
fabric store. Noticing the numerous requests for sewing referrals, she identified
the need to start a sewing business. Weave Gotcha Covered! was born in the
basement with a sewing machine, a friend, and the commission of a “While
You Were Out” makeover.
Kelly’s reputation for working hard and dedication to doing right by the customer, employee, and society,
provided the blueprint for WGC’s mission-driven social enterprise business model. With a mission to employ
underserved women of the urban core, Kelly tweaks standard business practices by questioning the status quo
with a passionate “Why can’t we?!”

these techniques to create a snapshot of valuation, track progress, and set goals.

better way. In this class, Nancy Letts will show you how to make a bed skirt with a matching band, as
well as how to adapt the skirt to different types of beds, work around slats or other obstructions, and
use hook-and-loop tape to easily install the skirt without removing the mattress or bedding.
#603 / Setting Yourself Apart with Deborah Cronin
Any marketing workshop will teach you that the key to success is distinguishing yourself from the
competition. What, exactly, does that mean? Deborah Cronin will share myriad ways to take your

solving, the ability to handle special fabrics, advanced sewing techniques, knowledge of just the
right materials to create a finer product, above-average service and more.

#701 / Learning to Love Lace, Sheer and Casement Fabrics with Ann K. Johnson

how these techniques can help you tame any unruly fabric.

with minimal light bleed. She will also share tips for adding internal stability, troubleshooting tricky
fabrics that sag, and much more.
#704 / Upholstery Foundations: Cushions with Cynthia Bleskachek

compared to the cover, and how does that relate to the available space? Cynthia Bleskachek will
share common pitfalls and offer you solutions for achieving professional results. You’ll also learn about
selecting and working with modern cushioning materials, patterning cushions for furniture, dealing
with problematic cushions, weighing the pros and cons of different cushion styles, and
communicating with your client.
