Learn strategies that give students an alternative to the standard algorithm for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Explore how these TEKS- encouraged strategies can strengthen student understanding of place value.
Day 2: Model Drawing for grades 3-5
Explore how the “strip diagrams” in the TEKS can be incorporated into instruction and student-use in a variety of contexts. Learn how to teach bar models from the concrete, to the pictorial, to the abstract level with all four operations. Examine ways that these bar models tremendously help students solve one-step and multi-step word problems across a variety of strands.

In the elaboration portion, see twenty-one strategies modeled that students can choose from before using them in context with proper punctuation. Finally in the editing portion, discuss ways to rectify common writing pitfalls, including vagueness, wordiness and poor sentence structure.
