BTS – the World’s Top Korean Band

BTS is actually short for Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean which literally means
‘bulletproof boy scouts’. For non-Korean fans, they are known as Bangtan Boys. This
boy band consists of seven members: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.
BTS is now famous worldwide. Their music is popular even in countries which don’t
understand the Korean language.

This incredible boy band was formed in 2013 in Seoul, South Korea. They were
merely teenagers when they released their first album in the same year. Then from
2015 onwards, their music entered America. By 2017, BTS started becoming famous
worldwide. Their most famous albums in the US Billboard 200 were Love Yourself: Tear,
Love Yourself: Answer and Map of the Soul: Persona.

their dance moves and good looks. These talented youngsters write and produce most of
their music. They focus on serious issues which touch many hearts. Although they started
their career with hip hop, they also perform K-pop, R&B and EDM.

BTS has become one of South Korea’s national treasures. In 2018, their global music
sales was up to USD19 billion, which makes them the world’s top Korean band. Then
in 2019, they made USD4.65 million for the South Korean economy. On top of that,
they received international recognition from world leaders when they were invited to

Lindy and Horror Films

Lindy had a love-hate relationship with horror films. She loved to watch
scary movies but at the same time, they made her so scared that she also hated
them. Her mother could never understand this.

“If you’re so scared, why do you keep watching them?” Her mother would
say. “Stop watching and go to sleep already!”

Yet, Lindy would always stay glued to the sofa. Her whole body would
shake from fear but her eyes were wide open. Despite her parents telling her to
stop watching, she wouldn’t stop. Once, her father switched off the television and
it made Lindy angry. Every time her parents stopped her from watching a scary
movie, Lindy would promise that she wouldn’t watch it.

One night, her parents watched a horror film. They made her go to bed early
so that she couldn’t watch it with them. After ten minutes, Lindy snuck out of her
room and sat quietly on the stairs. From there, she watched the movie without her
parents’ knowledge.

The movie was about a haunted house called Amityville. A family moved
into the house and found a doll inside. The little girl in the family liked it, so
they let her keep the doll. They didn’t know that an evil spirit lived inside it. The
haunted doll could walk around and hurt people. At night, when the spirit became
active, the doll’s eyes would glow red.

Lindy sat frozen on the stairs. She was terrified but she didn’t make a sound.
At the end of the movie, she returned to her room quickly and quietly but she
couldn’t sleep at all. The next morning, she went to school feeling extremely
sleepy. She kept falling asleep during all her lessons. Because of that, she was
punished in front of her classmates the whole day.

When Lindy got home, she threw all her dolls away. Her father found them
in the dustbin but didn’t say anything. He knew that Lindy had secretly watched
the movie. Since that day, Lindy stopped watching horror films.

You are going to read a story about Zaki.
Six sentences have been removed from the story. Choose from the sentences (A – H)
to fit each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

For each question, write your answer in the space provided.

Small Change

“Whose coins are these, all over on the table?” asked Mr Ahmad.

“They are Zaki’s,” answered his wife.

“Zaki, why do you leave your coins everywhere?” Mr Ahmad said to Zaki.

“They make my wallet so heavy,” said Zaki.

“Coins are still money. (35) You might need them,” Mr Ahmad said.

“Why? You just gave me RM50,” replied Zaki. His father did not reply and just went

to work. Zaki did not listen to his father.

“Just because you get a lot of pocket money, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t value

money. (36) ” said Zaki’s mother when she sent him to school.

“Okay, okay.” said Zaki. “I’m going out with my friends after school today. You don’t

have to pick me up. I can take the bus back. Bye, Mom.”

(37) They walked to a cafe nearby and had lunch together. Zaki ate a lot. He

ordered a large burger with French fries. Then he ordered a cold drink, an ice cream

sundae and finally a hot coffee.

After lunch his friends went for their tuition classes. (38) The bus finally

arrived after half an hour. He got onto the bus and took out his wallet. The bus driver said,

“RM2.50. Please put the exact change in the machine.”

Zaki opened his wallet. (39) “I’m sorry, I don’t have any coins,” he said to

the bus driver. The bus driver refused to accept it and Zaki had to get off the bus. Zaki

panicked. He could not ask for money from his friends. He also didn’t want to call his

parents. They would definitely scold him. In the end, he had to beg for 50 cents. He had to

ask more than ten people. (40) He thanked the stranger then took the bus home.

After that day, Zaki would always have coins in his wallet.
