Sport for athletes with an impairment has existed for more than 100 years. The first sport
clubs for the deaf already existed in 1888 in Berlin. It was not until after World War II
however, that it was widely introduced. The purpose of it at that time was to assist the
large number of war veterans and civilians who had been injured during wartime.
In 1944, at the request of the British Government, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann opened
a spinal injuries centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain, and in time,
rehabilitation sport evolved to recreational sport and then to competitive sport.
The first Paralympic Games was held in Rome, Italy in 1960 and featured 400
athletes from 23 countries. In 1976, Örnsköldsvik, Sweden staged the first Paralympic
Winter Games. The Games is now the second biggest sporting event in the world.

Swimming is a sporting activity that is well worth the effort it takes to get into
the pool. It increases lung capacity and the heart pumps better. It gives you the
chance to hang around with friends while frolicking in the water. It gives you re-
spite from the heat. Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength, and
cardio – vascular fitness. It can serve as a cross training element to your regular
workouts.
Besides, people of all ages can swim. As swimming is a non-weight bear-
ing exercise, it is easy on the joints and even people with arthritis can swim with-
out worrying that the exercise might ruin their bones further. Swimming burns
calories, a pound of body weight per mile, so it’s a good exercise for weight loss
as well.
There are many psychological benefits to swimming. If you relax and
swim with very little effort and let your mind wander, focusing on nothing but
the rhythm of your stroke, before long, a feeling of well-being settles similar to
the feeling one gets from meditation. For me swimming is a mixture of exercise
and fun.
Spending time floating on my back while listening to the water lap my
feet is so soothing and relaxing that it makes me wish I didn’t ever have to step
out of the water.

Read the narrative below and answer the questions that follow.
When Silver Gleams Like Gold
Through the first three days of sailing from Wednesday to Friday, Evang had built
up a good lead over his competitors. Three first place finishes in six races had him
five points ahead of the pack. Thailand was close, but Evang was sailing confidently
and those of us who were following the daily updates from the team were allowing
ourselves to smell a whiff of potential gold.
Then on Saturday came a little slip. Evang turned the wrong way at a buoy. He did
not sail a shorter course than his rivals but he sailed the wrong way around the buoy.
Rules are rules and it was an infraction that could invalidate his results for that race if
any team protested. He ended up finishing first in that race.
A gold medal would have been almost a sure thing if the results of that race stood.
The other teams had an hour-long window after Saturday’s only race to protest the
wrong turn and invalidate Evang’s points for a first-place finish. Except – no one did!
After years of hard training and sacrifice, with the gold medal within his grasp
and the rule books in his favour – a lesser man would have just seized that good break
and take the easier route to the top of the podium. After a quick consultation with the
team coaches, Evang went up to the Games officials to report his wrong turn in that
race. This invalidated his much needed points for his gold medal.
21
English Form 2 KSSM Unit 2 All that Glitters
We wish we could report a Cinderella ending but on that Sunday, the man from
Thailand was just the better sailor, edging out Evang for the top spot at the podium.
That act of integrity swayed the results but showed a gem of a character.
Yes, he went home with “only” the silver on his chest. But we know that inside – he
has got a gold medal heart.

COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE OF ADJECTIVES
Grammar Tips
The degrees of comparison are known as the positive, the comparative, and the superlative. We use the
comparative for comparing two things and the superlative for comparing three or more things. Notice that
the word than frequently accompanies the comparative and the word the precedes the superlative. The
suffixes –er and –est are used to form most comparatives and superlatives, although we need –ier and
–iest when a two-syllable adjective ends in y. Thus the comparative form of happy is happier and the
superlative form is happiest. We use more and most when an adjective has more than one syllable.
Positive Comparative Superlative

small smaller smallest
wet wetter wettest
hot hotter hottest
thin thinner thinnest

large larger largest
