of the time they are on their feet. With good stamina, they won’t tire easily.

a doctor and she works tirelessly to save people’s lives .

I admire my cousin because she is the most dedicated person I know.
She spends long hours at the hospital to help care for the patients. She has to monitor her
patients' progress, diagnose problems and administer medical treatments. She works hard to

help her patients get better.

Another quality that stands out is her excellent bedside manners .
This quality not only puts her patients at ease but

also helps reassure them that they are in good hands . I believe this quality is important
for doctors to have as it helps patients feel less afraid about going to the hospital to seek
treatment. Her patients trust her because she shows compassion and empathy towards them.

I really like my cousin Trisha. All the people who have crossed paths with her feel the
same way. Both patients and hospital staff hold her in high regard.

I hope to make a positive impact in other people’s lives when I become a nurse in future

Practice 1
We asked six students to share the new rules and regulations required in order to HEBAT: KWR
control the spread of contagious diseases. Read the texts below and answer the (CAR/KWLH)
questions that follow.

THE NEW NORMAL FOR MALAYSIANS

Wearing a face mask to cover your nose and mouth is compulsory whenever you
Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
A are out in an open area. Unless you are jogging, eating or drinking, this rule should
Selina be adhered to. Doing this practice can possibly block any transmission through
inhaled droplets as to prevent the spread of a disease.

Although social gatherings with a limited number of guests are allowed, you
should avoid crowded places. Always remember to keep a distance of at least one
B metre from other individuals around you. Having to queue to go into a bank or buy
Latif something at a popular outlet is a fact that you have to live with. You should stand
or sit where you can see markings which have been made to ensure that you are
not too near to other people.

Our usual social practice of shaking hands and hugging as a way of greeting is to
C be avoided because close encounters with other people can poise a risk in catching
Rizal the disease. Instead, you can place your hand on your heart, give a wave or nod or
just say hello in order to practise social distancing, one of the necessary steps to
break the spread of the virus.

You are required to register yourself at any premise that you visit even if it is just
for a short while. For this you need to download the “My Sejahtera” application into
D your telephone. An alternative to scanning with “My Sejahtera” will be to write your
Danny name, telephone number and the time you enter the premise. Remember to check
your body temperature and use the hand sanitiser. Failing to do so can cause you
to lose a lot of money in terms of paying a fine, if you get caught by the authorities.

One other important fact to be aware of as a step to prevent Covid-19 is to keep
clean. Follow your usual hygienic routine and remember not to touch your face
E especially your eyes, nose and mouth. Wash your hands with soap and water or
Citra sanitise them when washing is not possible. You must also clean and disinfect
surfaces that are often touched regularly at home or at school. Doing this as a
precaution, may reduce the risk of infection.

F If there is nothing urgent that requires you to go out, you should just stay at home.
Putri It is more important for you to stay home if you have a fever, flu or cough. This will
help in breaking the link to stop the spread of a germ or a virus.

I’m a fan of Korean dramas. Hence, South Korea will be the destination of my visit.
B The best time that I would like to be there is during spring time. I’m sure Jeju Island

round except for the famous tulips. The delicate flowers which blossom for just a
few weeks in the spring are definitely included in the itinerary.

I am interested in architecture so my choice is Istanbul, Turki. Visitors to Istanbul will
not miss looking at beautiful, historical landmarks besides its shopping sites and
D delectable cuisine. My tour should include the Hagia Sophia, a beautiful church-
Adam
turned-museum with an interesting history, the Blue Mosque and the famous
Topkapi Palace.

I love challenging sports. I’ve tried skate boarding and ice skating. I would love to
try skiing and I hope to be able to ski in Austria, a mountainous country in Europe.
E I’ve read that the country is situated in the Alps where outdoor winter sports are a
Kancana
favourite pastime. It will certainly be difficult to choose one out of the many skiing
resorts available to tourists.

I have always dreamed of going to the Disneyland Park which is situated in Los

Shocking Disasters

The unforeseen tsunami, caused by the Indian Ocean earthquake that occurred in
A 2004 left harrowing memories to many people in the world. Malaysia was also struck

Mrs. Heng by the tsunami which hit the Northern areas, especially Langkawi, Penang and Kedah.
The crushing waves had been fatal to lives and destructive to things and buildings.

The Highland Towers tragedy happened in 1993. There were three buildings and I
B was a resident in one of the towers. Continuous heavy rains had caused a massive
Mrs. Raj landslide which brought down one of the towers with it. There were some survivors
but many had been buried under the rubbles. Since then, the other two towers
were declared unsafe and everyone had to leave their units.
Floods are common to Malaysians especially those in coastal areas in the eastern
C part of the peninsular. One of the worst floods occurred in the middle of December
Puan 2014 and which only subsided in the first few days of the new year, 2015. More than
Dahlia 200, 000 people were affected and 21 were killed. The flood occurred throughout the
country and affected Sabah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak and Johor.

Malaysians have never been worried about earthquakes until one struck in 2015.
D Sabah was rocked by a 6.0 Richter scale earthquake which afflicted the area near
Avin Agus Mount Kinabalu. The tremors caused loose soil and boulders, alarming the people
living near the foot of the mountain. Sadly, eighteen hikers of different nationalities
perished, including Malaysian hiking guides who died protecting other climbers.

Most tourists who visit volcano areas find the thrill in catching a glimpse of the
smoking peak of a volcano or looking at a fiery crater rim spurting jets of orange lava
E and red sparks. Our country does not have any threat from a volcanic eruption but the
Puan White Island volcano off the coast of the North Island in New Zealand erupted and
Jasmin caused death as well as injuries. The victims were mostly tourists and Malaysians can
be victims to similar situations. We never know what the future holds!

Pos Dipang, an Orang Asli settlement that had been washed away by a mudslide
was considered as one of the worst incidents in Malaysian history. It happened
F at around 6 p.m. on 29th August 1996. The villagers heard a loud rumbling noise
Encik followed by a landslide of mud and water that came rolling down, sweeping houses
into a river which was almost 9 km away from the place. Forty-four people lost their
lives. The incident was widely blamed on widespread logging activities carried out
not far from the village.

Surviving Disasters

Malaysia is quite a blessed country! Natural disasters such as earthquakes and tropical
storms seldom occur and there is no drought or even a (5) volcano in our country. However,
accidents and disasters are (6) unforeseen situations that can happen. In spite of a common

phenomenon, a flood can cause a (7) harrowing experience. Lives lost or destruction all
round can be depressing. Despite everything, life needs to go on. A person has to be strong
emotionally and to become resilient in order to cope with such situations. Just accept the fact, as

grumbling and (8) rumbling about unfairness or disappointments will not change anything.
So, be optimistic and move forward!

Embroidery

I can say that doing this is quite rare nowadays. I picked up the hobby from my

Sara
later I tried a few stitches. After some time, I’m hooked! I just love to see the final
piece because it is beautiful and I can claim that I’m the person responsible for it.
Playing Video Games
Although my parents are concerned about the possible negative effects of playing
B games, I’m glad that they still allow me to spend time playing my favourite games.
Damien However, I limit myself to play just for an hour on alternate days. It is a way for me
to relax and entertain myself. I think playing games does have some advantages. It
has helped me to be motivated and become more disciplined!
Making Handicrafts
I love making handicrafts. I recycle jars and containers or make patchwork items
C from scraps of cloth. The finished items can be tote bags, pencil holders and small
Vanessa
decorative items which I give to friends and family members on birthdays and
special events.

Outdoor Activities
I just love being outdoors. On weekends, I usually go fishing, trekking or hiking with
D my father and my younger brother. We often spend one whole day exploring the
Matt
trails in a nearby forest. I feel calm and peaceful being surrounded by nature and
all its glory.

Watching Travel Programmes
I cannot afford to travel but watching travel programmes allows me to see and learn
E about other countries. It is like a form of virtual tourism in which I am able to observe
Alexis the attractions and the cultures of the country being featured. Even though, I do
not experience meeting the people there but I gain a lot of extra knowledge about
food, costumes or the customs and traditions.

Reading
I choose to read story books to help me increase my vocabulary so that I can write
F better essays. Definitely, it has been the right decision. I am now much better at
Charlie writing. In addition, reading fiction creates lively imaginations! I often put myself in
the different places and situations that I read in the story, hence I will be engrossed

Beneficial Hobbies

Many people turn their hobbies into jobs that they enjoy doing.

Some people indulge in gardening to get physical exercises and to (5) relax
but they can earn extra money by selling seedlings or their extra vegetables.

• Baking can be another way to garner an income. Who will not be tempted with creamy, fluffy
and beautifully decorated cakes? It will be a (6) rare occasion if someone
says, “No, thank you! I don’t eat cakes.”
• Let your (7) imagination run wild! Try writing short stories that you can send to the

school magazine or newsletter. It is even better if you can participate in writing contests. You
may win a prize for your effort.

them aware of the good and bad food so they can build a better relationship with
June food. I am aware that cases of obesity keep increasing and it is a difficult problem
to deal with. Therefore, I hope to help people overcome eating disorders and find
suitable solutions so that the future generation will become healthier individuals.

Information Technology
My interest is in Information Technology, a broad field that keeps changing- fast. I’m
