Chapter 1  English  SPM  Chapter 1 Short Texts (MCQs)

Kuala Kangsar: Police are hunting for an armed robber who threatened a woman
and her toddler at knifepoint at noon today. Neighbours who heard the woman
screaming made a call to the police station. The man in his thirties had grabbed
the woman’s keys and driven off her car. In a separate incident, a man who fits
the same description broke into a house and made away with ten thousand in cash
and some jewelleries. Officers have begun investigating and suspect that both
crimes have been committed by the same person but no arrests have been made.

5. Which is the most suitable headline for the report above?
A A Toddler Who Cheated Death
B A Serial Robbery
C Armed Robberies

The answer is B. A headline serves to summarise the point of the news. Option A
is unsuitable because the news did not focus on the toddler. The option C is not
suitable because there is no mention of the use of arms in the second robbery
case. The word serial in option B means a series of repeated offence. The last
two lines of the report suggests that it is a serial crime. Thus the answer is B.

The impact of open burning on the environment cannot be disputed. Yet, it is
still a common practice used to dispose of waste. An estimated 41% of global
waste is burned openly. Most open waste burning occurs in residential areas. It
is a popular way to get rid of waste as it is fast, effective and inexpensive. It is
disheartening that residents are not doing their bit for the environment despite
the numerous awareness programmes carried out. Perhaps the only way to combat
open burning is through strict enforcement of law and it is time this is done.

6. Which of the following is true?
A People commonly dispose of waste through open burning due to lack of proper
waste management.
B Residents are unhappy that there is no way of effectively disposing waste
except through open burning.
C Strict enforcement of law has yet to be carried out to deter residents
from carrying out open burning.

The answer is C. Option A is not a true statement as it is clearly stated in the text
that open burning is done because it is fast, effective and inexpensive. Option
B is not the answer as there is no indication that the residents are unhappy.
In fact, it is stated that they are doing it in spite of the numerous awareness
programme carried out.

would mean offering suggestions and appeal means to make a heartfelt
request. In this case it should be to contact.

You only need to look at the text messages that flood your own mobile to
understand the impact of text messaging on the English Language. It is
therefore not a surprise when English teachers bemoan the decline in the
language proficiency. The average children today struggle more with spelling,
grammar and essay writing in general. It is not unusual to see such language
being used in essays. English is a beautiful language that does not deserve
such a massacre.

8. Which of the following is true about the impact of mobile phones?
A It has caused students to have a better grasp of the English Language.
B It has promoted better spelling, grammar and essay writing.
C It has significantly ruined the English Language.

The answer is C. Option A is not the answer as the text clearly stated that
there is a decline in the language proficiency. Option B is incorrect because
the text explicitly says that the children are struggling with spelling, grammar
and essay writing. Option C is the answer because the word ruined means
collapsed or in a state of disrepair. In this context, it refers to the decline of
the English Language.

The gold standard N-95 mask is 95% effective at keeping the wearer free of inhaling
viral particles. These masks are best reserved for front-line workers in high-risk settings.
Surgical masks are less effective and cloth face coverings even less so in protecting
the wearer. However, even a 50% reduction in viral transmission is important. For the
general public, the reason for wearing a facial covering is to help protect others from
you when you cough, sneeze or even talk. So, wearing a mask is showing respect
for others and is your way of helping lessen the spread of the disease.

Adapted: https://www.lung.org/blog/covid-masks

2. Which of the following sums up the purpose of the article above?
A To advise people what type of mask to buy.
B To inform people of the different types of masks and their effectiveness.
C To persuade people to get the best mask for protection.
