Writing Tips 1 Part 5 tests your spelling and ability to read and understand definitions of words. 2 There are 5 questions in this part. 3 Look at the example below: A round fruit with shiny red or green skin that is fairly hard and white inside a p p l e 4 Read the definition or description carefully and think about what the word could be. 5 The first letter of the word will be given. This will give you a clue about what the word could be. 6 Then, count the number of blank spaces. Use the number of blank spaces to guess the number of letters in the word. 7 For example, if the answer is “apple”, and there are 4 blank spaces, it means that the word must have a length of 5 letters. 8 The total mark for Part 5 is 5 marks. 9 Practise spelling at home to improve your chances of getting them right in the exam. English Year 4 Vocabulary Enrichment & Writing Tips Part 6 Short Communicative Message 1 Part 6 tests your ability to write short messages. 2 You will be given a prompt that describes a situation, and you will need to write a communicative message in the form of an email, letter or message. 3 The prompt will usually include 3 bullet points that provide clues about what you need to write. 4 Make sure you address each bullet point in your communicative message. 5 Tips for writing a communicative message for Part 6: (a) Identify the key information in the prompt. • What is the situation you are writing about? • Who is the recipient of the message? • What do you want the recipient of your message to do or know? (b) Be clear and concise. Get to the point quickly and avoid using unnecessary words. (c) Remember to use proper grammar and spelling. (d) Read through your message and check for errors before submitting. 6 The total mark for Part 6 is 10 marks. 7 You have to write between 30 and 50 words. Part 7 Note Expansion 1 Part 7 tests your ability to write a communicative message based on a stimulus, such as a poster. 2 You are required to write a communicative message in the form of an email, letter or message. 3 The stimulus will provide you with all of the information that you need to write your communicative message. 4 It is also important to elaborate and extend on the information in the stimulus. This means that you need to add your own ideas and words to the message. 5 Tips for writing a communicative message for Part 7: (a) Read the stimulus carefully. (b) Address the information in the stimulus. (c) Elaborate and extend on the information. (d) Remember to use proper grammar and spelling.
