The 10-month recycling programme held in SK Setia Jaya has shown an increase in the number
of recycling items collected by the Year 6 pupils. The teacher in charge, Mrs Rajes had made
arrangements for recycling items collected to be sold and the cash was given back to the
pupils to be put into their class fund. Some activities were also held whereby the pupils created
handicrafts from the recycling items collected. These handicrafts were later sold during the
Canteen Day and the proceeds were given to the headmaster to help fund the new school

Beach Clean-up
Last week, Amar and about 50 volunteers joined the beach clean-up at Pantai Merdeka. Upon
reaching, the village headman divided all the volunteers present into different groups. Each group
was given a large plastic bag to collect the rubbish.
Amar and the other volunteers started the clean-up at 8.30 a.m. Amar collected the plastic
bottles strewn carelessly along the beach. Some collected the food wrappings thrown around the
trees. Some volunteers collected the rubbish along the beach. In an hour and half, Amar and the
volunteers had managed to collect 15 large bags of rubbish.
The village headman invited all the volunteers for some refreshments. All the volunteers
quenched their thirst and took a bite of the snacks prepared by the headman’s wife. The volunteers
continued the beach clean-up by placing some sign boards requesting the members of public to
take care of the cleanliness of the beach.
Amar and the volunteers finished the clean-up around noon. They were all tired but were
happy looking at how clean the beach had become. They all hoped that the future beach patrons
will be responsible for the cleanliness of the beach and help to preserve the environment.

Dear Melissa,
How are you? I am doing great here. Thank you for your letter about the Green Week
at your school. Let me tell you about the Astronomy Week we had at my school. I learned a
lot about our Solar System from all the activities held. Let me share some facts of the planets
with you.
• Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.
• Venus the second brightest object in the night sky after the Moon. It is the hottest
planet in the Solar System.
• Earth is the fifth largest planet of our solar system and has one large natural satellite,
the Moon. The only place where life is known to currently exist. Earth is 70% water.
• The surface of Mars has many craters, deep valleys and volcanoes.

English Year 4 Comprehension – Section A
• Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter has some of the largest moons
in the Solar System.
• Saturn is the second largest planet and is known for its rings, although the other gas
giants also have these kinds of rings, only Saturn’s rings can be seen the clearest.
• Uranus takes roughly 84 years to orbit once around the sun.
• Neptune is the second furthest planet from the Sun and it takes 165 years for Neptune
to go once around the Sun.
• It takes Pluto 248½ years to complete its orbit round the Sun as it is the furthest
planet from the Sun.
These facts are interesting, aren’t they? Do you know any additional facts about our
Solar System? Please do share them with me. I can’t wait to hear from you.
Love,
Umairah

Jeevan and his classmates were at the school compound. Their teacher wanted them to

way. When he caught sight of a praying mantis, he went closer to look at it first. To his shock,
it suddenly jumped and landed on his arm. Jeevan started screaming loudly and his teacher
dashed towards him. Everyone laughed at him as he cried like a baby. Jeevan promised to

Good morning, pupils. Today, I would like to talk about safety precautions while staying
home alone. Staying home alone can be risky. A safe precaution for you is to keep the doors
and window locked. Although it is unlikely that someone might break in, it is better to be safe
than sorry. You should also decide with your parents on what to do in case the phone rings or
if there is someone knocking at the door when you are alone at home.
Apart from that, you might also have some other kinds of emergencies such as an
overflowing toilet, a fire or even you or your siblings getting injured. Hence, you should know:
• the emergency numbers
• your address and contact number
• the name, address, and contact number of your parents’ workplace, of your trusted neighbour
and of another emergency contact person such as your grandparents or family’s friend
Staying alone can be dangerous. However, if you are prepared, you should be safe.

Dear Irfan,
Thank you for your previous letter which I received a few days ago. You asked about
the importance of spending wisely in your letter. Well, one of the importance is we can use
the money during emergencies. Besides that, we should learn the value of money from a
young age so we will be responsible adults in the future. Finally, it is better for us to only
spend on things that we really need. This is to prevent us from being in a situation whereby
we need to borrow from others. That would be really embarrassing!
I hope you spend your money wisely as the saying goes ‘a penny saved is a penny
earned’. I hope to hear from you soon. Take care.
