On our way from Victoria Falls to the Ngamo Plains, an elephant-laden grassland where diminishing acacia woodlands meet the parched stretch of the Kalahari sands, we rattled out of Dete Station towards the north-eastern frontier of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. There were twelve of us, including nine tourists, two engineers, and a safari guide on the custom-built, private train. Standing on one foot and leaning out of the side of the train, I squinted into the midday sun and took a sip of water in an effort to get a closer look at a colourful bird perched on a wire. A fellow traveller’s camera was fully zoomed in. We spotted flashes of electric blue, a somewhat big beak, and a massive head, but the lighting prevented us from making a certain identification. We kept debating while the train sped ahead, leaving our target far behind. Could it have been a kingfisher? Perhaps some kind of woodpecker? One of the train engineers overheard our pointless speculation and correctly identified the bird as a lilac-breasted roller. Satisfied with the answer, I crossed the bird off my list and was able to relax. The Elephant Express, a one-car train that can carry up to 22 passengers, may seem like an unusual safari vehicle, but it actually provides a unique safari experience. An element of surprise and delight is added to the experience when travellers stumble upon magnificent creatures by chance, rather than actively seeking them out in a 4x4 or on foot. We hadn’t gone very far from Dete Station when the engineers slowed down and pointed to the right. There was a troop of baboons that swarmed the park’s entrance. There must have been more than 100 enormous baboons running about and body-slamming one another. On the rest of the roughly 80 km journey, we had to slow down several times for families of elephants and herds of kudu to cross the tracks. We also stopped to observe giraffes grazing in the canopy, while zebras and steenbok fed on the undergrowth. More lilac-breasted rollers were seen, along with a large group of Southern Ground Hornbills. We also spotted a brown-hooded kingfisher and were fortunate to hear the cry of a grey go-away bird just moments before we caught sight of it. Our small train came to a complete halt. As we waited for animals to appear on the open sides of the railcar, Vusa Ncube, a resident of the nearby Ngamo community and our main safari guide, gathered us together. A tree to the left of the railroad tracks had a wooden plaque that said, “Cecil’s Tree.” Ncube shared the sorrowful story of the illegal killing of a beloved lion in the local area. Poaching has also greatly reduced the rhinos population in Hwange. It is estimated that there are less than a hundred black rhinos left in the area, and that white rhinos have been extinct there for at least 15 years. As a result, the local villages are collaborating with the National Park and the safari to protect the area’s wildlife and promote ecotourism. I remembered my trip in May when US-based adventure travel company Wilderness Travel collaborated with Imvelo to lead a small group of tourists to see Thuza and Kusasa, (Community Rhino Conservation Initiative) CRCI’s first rhinos. Siboe Sibanda, the lodge manager and a resident of Tsholotsho, warmly welcomed us upon our arrival at Camelthorn Lodge. Sibanda ensures that everything runs properly for Camelthorn guests. We visited the Ncube residence, which is the home of the village chief of Ngamo. I noticed the village chief and his wife were wearing T-shirts with designs of rhinos on them. While we sat around a table drinking tea and coffee, Ncube told us a story about how he became really excited when he first saw a rhino when he was a child. He said that the majority of rural kids have never seen a rhino in person. However, in the future, things will be different thanks to the conservation effort. As the Elephant Express headed back to Dete Station, I enjoyed observing the abundant wildlife in Hwange. I truly had a great time. But I do wonder if I will be able to see a rhino crossing the rail tracks the next time I visit. (Adapted from: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20221122-zimbabwes-stunning-80km-safari-train)

Practical Joke Gone Wrong A sigh escaped from Frida’s lips. Her thumb might be busy scrolling through her social media feed, and yet she still feels bored. It was certainly a long weekend. Her parents had gone to visit her aunt, so she was home alone. (27) It was barely 4 o’clock in the evening. She was not in the mood to do anything. Neither the chores nor the homework. This is a day of rest. She told herself, “No work, zero.” Again, she sighed. Having nothing to do is still incredibly dull. (28) She smirked. She made a phone call to her classmate, Tasya, who is widely acknowledged as the brightest student in the class due to her frequent visits to the library and stacks of borrowed books. (29) That means Tasya won’t be able to see who’s calling her on her caller ID. “Hello.” Frida beamed her signature smile. “Greetings, Miss Tasya Jones. This is the library. It has come to my attention that you have overdue books. Your overdue fine currently amounts to RM48.72. Please bring the books and the necessary payment to the library immediately.” She could hear Tasya’s frantic voice on the other end. Tasya was raving, saying that she had no overdue books. (30) As the call ended, Tasya said she would head to the library immediately to solve the issue. Frida was delighted. Her practical joke was successful. Excited, she called another classmate, Jody. Again, the same practical joke. It was no longer a boring day for Frida. (31) The phone number was unrecognisable. She hesitantly picked it up. “Hello, is this Miss Frida?” a woman asked. “Y-yes.” Frida replied. Two people reported receiving a call from this number yesterday with regards to an overdue book, and our system has now flagged your number as suspicious. Nothing about this is funny, Miss Frida. This is a very serious situation. The library has decided to ban you for three months as a result of the prank, and we want you to submit an apology letter. If you do not comply, I will have to bring this matter up with your parents.” Frida turned completely pale. (32) The next thing she knew, her phone was buzzing with messages from Tasya and Jody. They were both really upset with her. What had she done? A An unexpected phone call came in the next morning for Frida. B Then, an idea popped into her head. C She thought of various ways to pass her time but came up with nothing. D She spent the entire afternoon resting on the sofa in various positions. E Plus, Frida was positive that Tasya did not have her number because she had never given it to her. F Her parents will not take this lightly and there will be repercussions. G She profusely apologised to the librarian and sat still on her bed, her stomach in knots. H Frida tried to hold her giggle as much as she could.

English Form 5 Assessment Test 81 © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. Part 5 [8 marks] Questions 33 to 40 are based on the following texts. Read the texts carefully and answer the questions that follow. How Do You Relieve Stress? A Maria When I’m stressed, I write in my journal. Writing down my thoughts and feelings can help me unleash pent-up emotions. It helps me organise my thoughts and control my emotions. I write whatever comes to mind. No one reads my journal, so I can write whatever I want. I just write down everything that comes to mind and think about it later. This is so I can figure out why I’m so stressed and make a plan to feel better. B Tan I find watching movies to be entertaining and helps me deal with stress. I can forget about my problems when I watch a movie because I don’t have to think about anything else while watching. Watching movies helps me get my feelings out. I usually either laugh or cry during a movie. This emotional release can help me feel better and calm me down. C Saleem When I need to let off steam, I always sing. When I sing, I feel happy and energetic. Just hearing the song makes me happy and changes my mood. When I sing at the top of my lungs, I let out a lot of energy, which helps me forget about my problems. I feel happy and refreshed after I belt out a tune or two. If I have extra pocket money, I’ll go to karaoke. However, if I don’t, I’ll just sing in my bathroom at home. D Julie When I’m feeling stressed, I usually talk to someone. No matter if it’s a member of my family or a friend. Most of the time, I talk to my friends about things that make me feel stressed. It’s because they usually have similar experiences and can understand me better than my family. When I share my feelings with my family and friends, they always offer me advice and support, which helps me feel better. E Ravi I work out when I’m stressed. Exercise has been shown to be a great way to deal with stress. I usually do aerobic exercise or just go for a run. It helps me forget about my worries and focus on how my body moves. This makes me feel better and makes the annoyances of the day go away. The focus also brings calmness and clarity. I notice that when I work out, my mood gets better. F Rana Taking a long walk usually helps me. When I’m feeling stressed, I walk away from the source of my stress and keep walking until I can go back. I don’t have to think about the things that are stressing me out when I go for a walk. I try to enjoy my surroundings, like watching the birds or the sky. It helps me clear my mind and stop thinking about whatever or whoever is stressing me out.
