KM1–6 KERTAS MODEL SPM 1 © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. SPM English 1119/1 Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. For each question, mark your answer on the best answer sheet. Johor Darul Ta’zim football club or JDT is well-known for its achievements and has garnered attention, love, respect, and support by a lot of Malaysians, Johoreans, in particular. I too, am not excluded, hence my persistence to watch the final match of the Malaysia Cup against Selangor at the National Stadium last November. I voiced out my desire to my father despite knowing he might not be able to afford the tickets and the whole journey. I thought I had picked the wrong timing to tell him as he had a long weekend, mostly taking passengers to and from malls and LRT or MRT stations. “Dad, I promise to study harder...” At my wit’s end, I blurted out my vow. SPM was around the corner and I still had the gut to be obsessed with my favourite sport and team. I worried how my dad would take it. How much harder could he work every single day to fulfil my request? “Sure,” dad replied and hugged me. I was stunned for a while because I thought he would disagree and start nagging at me about being wasteful. For our family, money was already tight. I was selfish enough to ask for a ticket. Guilt began to envelope me but at the same time, I really wanted to watch my favourite football team in action. Ignoring my negative thoughts, I continued revising subjects that needed more focus in my room. Dad left home again, most probably to take on more jobs. He once worked in a corporate firm but due to Covid-19, he was laid off. To this day, he has been selling ‘Nasi Lemak’ in the morning and working as a part-time Grab driver. He has never missed a day working post Covid-19. Mum cooks ‘Nasi Lemak’ before dawn and packs them nicely before selling them at a stall in our neighbourhood. A few days after I told my dad about wanting to watch the match at the stadium, he came home with three tickets. I was over the moon when I saw the tickets! However, I did not think Mum would want to see the match because she had to look after my one-year-old baby sister. “Call Aiman and tell him we have an extra ticket for the match.” Aiman is my cousin and Dad knew very well that we were very close when we were young. “We’ll be staying at Uncle Jo’s house for a night. I have not met him for very long.” We had not travelled since March 2020 due to Covid-19 travel restrictions and dad’s sudden retrenchment was also another reason. We talked about our trip while packing our things. He reminded us to pack light as we were only staying a night at Uncle Jo’s house in Putrajaya. I had not met my cousin, Aiman, for quite some time. On the day of the event, we started our journey early to avoid being delayed due to traffic jams. Although the match would kick off at 9 p.m., dad still sold ‘nasi lemak’ in the morning before we left. Luck was on our side as he managed to sell every single pack by 9 a.m. By 9.30 a.m., we were on the road, making our guesses as to which team would win and who would score goals. Mum fell asleep after a few minutes in the car as she was up the whole night looking after my baby sister, and cooked and packed ‘nasi lemak’. When she was awake, she would say one or two words about the match but she did not seem to understand much about football in general. We reached Uncle Jo’s house around 3 p.m. as dad drove cautiously. “I don’t want to pay summonses!” said dad jokingly. He always keeps to the speed limit.

KM1 –7 SPM English 1119/1 KERTAS MODEL SPM 1 © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. Uncle Jo’s family welcomed us warmly. The young man who opened the gate for us was none other than Aiman, who had grown so tall that I almost mistook him for Alif, his older brother. They were born twelve years apart. We chatted until it was time to go to the stadium. As we reached the stadium, we were led to the general admission area. Dad bought the cheapest tickets for us but I was grateful enough. We were so absorbed in watching the match that none of us said much to each other. Aiman, being a true supporter of Selangor, was ecstatic when Herlison Caion De Souza Ferreira scored a goal in the first half. His happiness was ephemeral as JDT made a comeback with Bergson Da Silva and Fernando Forestieri scoring JDT’s goals making the team win the Cup treble this year. Neither did I tease him about the loss nor express so much joy over JDT’s win. Most importantly, I went home feeling jubilant. 19. What was the writer’s concern when he told his father that he wanted to watch the match? A His father’s nag on being wasteful. B His father would ask him to focus on SPM. KM1–8 KERTAS MODEL SPM 1 © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. SPM English 1119/1 Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 are based on article ‘Monkeypox Outbreak’ that is adapted from New Straits Times. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Mark your answer on the answer sheet. MONKEYPOX OUTBREAK After being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, the world once again was alarmed by another contagious disease known as ‘monkeypox’. Molecular virologist Dr Vinod Balasubramaniam of the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia said monkeypox, a zoonotic disease caused by an orthopoxvirus, results in a smallpox-like disease in humans. 27. . Since then, it has spread to other regions of Africa (primarily West and Central), and cases outside Africa have emerged in recent years, he said. “This disease got its name Monkeypox because researchers first detected it in laboratory monkeys in 1958. The virus is thought instead to transmit from wild animals such as rodents to people or from infected people. Dr Vinod added that there are two forms of monkeypox, a milder west African strain and a more severe central African, or Congo strain. 28. . Dr Vinod said that people who have been infected by monkeypox typically experience fever, rash, headaches, muscle aches, and fatigue and may lead to a range of medical complications. «It is usually a self-limited disease with the symptoms lasting from two to four weeks.” Severe cases can occur depending on people’s immunity status. Monkeypox can be transmitted through close contact (with bodily fluids, such as saliva from coughing) with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus. 29. . According to Dr Vinod, “the virus can enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or the eyes, nose or mouth, hence a person with monkeypox is likely to infect far fewer close contacts than someone with SARS-CoV-2”. He then added that “most people recover from monkeypox without treatment in a few weeks.” Dr Muhammad Amir Yunus, a virologist from Universiti Sains Malaysia said there is an indicator symptom which might differentiate monkeypox from other virus illnesses (including smallpox), that is swelling of lymph nodes. “30. . The lesion is typically bumped and filled with bodily fluid and then becomes pus before drying and scabbing.” Health officials emphasise that anyone can be infected with monkeypox despite media reports that stated monkeypox cases found in other countries were related to sexual activity in Europe, involving men who have sex with men.

KM1 –9 SPM English 1119/1 KERTAS MODEL SPM 1 © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. There are several factors contributing to the resurgence in monkeypox cases. Dr Vinod stated that the most prevalent factor is waning immunity, although deforestation may be a factor or can even act to strengthen it. Dr Vinod said, “Monkeypox puts virologists on alert because it is in the smallpox family (which is far more virulent), although it causes less serious illness. 31. . But the smallpox vaccine also protects against monkeypox, and so the winding down of vaccination campaigns has led to a jump in Monkeypox cases.” According to Dr Vinod, travelling can possibly cause a spillover of monkeypox cases to other parts of the world as we are seeing a rise in the number of cases in the west and central Africa. 32. . Dr Vinod also expressed that the dwindling population immunity linked with the discontinuation of smallpox vaccination has established the landscape for the resurgence of monkeypox. (Adapted from: https://www.nst.com.my/news/online-special/2022/06/803522/monkeypox-outbreak-wake-callgovernments-stop-next-pandemic-say) A The symptoms will be followed by the presence of widespread rashes, blisters and lesions throughout the body including the face. B The current global outbreak, he said appears to involve the West African strain. C Monkeypox is not entirely a novel disease as it was initially diagnosed in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). D Monkeypox is a newly found disease feared by the world as it is as contagious as Covid-19. E Smallpox was eradicated by vaccination in 1980, and the shot has been phased out. F On the contrary, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, spreads through tiny airborne droplets. G The multiple strains found in South Africa are predicted to spread to other parts of the world like chicken pox and Covid-19 did. H With Covid-19 restrictions being eased, more and more countries are witnessing a higher rate of transmission.

KM1–10 KERTAS MODEL SPM 1 © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. SPM English 1119/1 Part 5 Questions 33 to 40 are based on the following text. Read the texts carefully and answer the questions that follow. Birthday Gift Preferences Abu, 38 years old My weekdays are always busy. I am occupied even after work as I work as a teacher. Marking and preparing lessons often leave me less than two hours every day to spend time with my family and do house chores. So, to me, my perfect gift would be to spend time with them at places such as beaches, parks, waterfalls and hills as we are nature lovers. Yaya, 19 years old I am a big fan of BTS, a South Korean boy band. If someone could give me a BTS ticket to their concert or a fan meeting as a birthday gift, I don’t think I would be able to sleep until the day of the event. Oh, I wish to meet them so badly! Hui Ling, 25 years old I’m a food lover and I love food hunting. Although eating at fancy restaurants and discovering new finds always give me thrills, on my birthday, I would love to eat something familiar, something that brings back my childhood memories and that is my mother’s cooking. The warmth that accompanies it is undeniably serene, a different sort of happiness, I would say. Rama, 46 years old Reading has always been my passion. I read all kinds of books and I collect them too. A room is dedicated to store my books as it is intended to be our family’s mini library. Mind you, it is a huge collection I have got there in the room. Nonetheless, on my birthday, I realise a lot of people like to buy me books, which is just great, but oftentimes, I have already read them or they are in my collection. So, I would suggest giving me a book voucher instead, so I can pick a title that I have not read. Samad, 78 years old I do not wish for anything at this age. I have been to many places and experienced many things. I have too many things which most of them I do not need or use anymore so I’m in the process of giving them away. Celebrating it is not something I want to do because my wife passed away on my birthday five years ago. Ever since her passing, visiting her grave and praying for her are what I do on my birthday. Julie, 30 years old I love receiving gifts and giving them too. I suppose it’s my language of love, giving and receiving things. I would love to receive fragrances and cosmetics on my 30th birthday. I’m all about beauty and having these items makes me feel more feminine.
