Linda’s e-Wallet
To some people especially the (0) oldest generation, e-wallets might be unheard
of although the Government has introduced a programme which (9) aim to encourage
the use of cashless payments among Malaysians. (10) Option for digital payments will
be safer and efficient for everyone whether you are a customer or a small business
owner. (11) A e-wallet allows people to make payments with just a single tap, without
any cash being involved. As more people choose to go cashless, many companies are
promoting (12) them e-wallets by introducing affordable features to serve the daily
needs oftheir consumers. One of them is Linda (13) that has been using the e-wallet
apps for quite some time. In addition, she also gets incentives and rebates offered by
the e-wallet that she is using. One evening, Linda went shopping for her (14) day
groceries. When she reached the payment counter, she could not find her wallet in
her handbag. Luckily, she had her e-wallet with her and the groceries (15) was paid
with just a tap of the finger. If she did not have the e-wallet, she would certainly be
embarrassed as there were other people queueing behind her. It was such a (16) relieve
that the e-wallet had saved the day.

ANDREA’S FOOD EXPERIENCE
Everyone knows that Malaysia is home to all kinds of tasty foods. Andrea came to Malaysia with
her aunt who wanted to visit her friend. On the first day she was treated to most Malaysians’ favourite
dish, ‘nasi lemak’. It was rice cooked in coconut milk, served with ‘sambal’ or cooked chillies, together
with meat, fried chicken or egg. The meal was definitely delicious but Andrea had to drink a lot because
she was not used to eating chillies. She also had a taste of ‘roti canai’ dipped in curry that her aunt’s
friend, Cynthia was eating. Cynthia mentioned that on another day, they could try another favourite
which would be fried noodles. The noodles could be ‘kuetiau’, mee or meehoon. The drinks would be
either tea or coffee although ‘teh tarik’ was obviously the more popular drink of the locals.
On the second day, the three of them travelled to Penang. Cynthia took them to a place where
they had ‘Penang laksa’. ‘Laksa’ is actually a kind of noodles eaten in gravy made of fish that had been
boiled and blended. Along the street, vendors were selling food usually eaten for tea which included
banana fritters, curry puffs, masala vadas, ‘rojak’ and Malay traditional cakes like ‘seri muka’ and ‘kuih
lapis’ or layered rice cakes.
Andrea was also introduced to ‘cendol’, another favourite which could be taken either as a drink
or as a dessert. The creative sellers would add fruit like durian, mango or dragon fruit to make it more
delectable especially if consumed during hot weather. Andrea liked it so much that she ordered another
bowl.
Travelling to the east coast, Andrea tried ‘nasi kerabu’ and ‘nasi dagang’ although she preferred ‘nasi
dagang’ which had a unique taste. Cynthia explained that the rice was a mixture of plain and glutinous
rice. Nevertheless her aunt preferred ‘nasi kerabu’, a blue-coloured rice mixed with raw vegetables and
fried shredded coconut. She said it was a healthier choice if compared to ‘nasi lemak’.
Andrea enjoyed her visit to the different states of Malaysia where she met friendly people,
experienced good food as well as visited beautiful beaches. She was also enchanted by the colourful
handmade ‘batik’ and bought some as souvenirs for her parents.

Read the text below and answer questions 25 – 34.
Being Healthy for A Lifetime
“Prevention is better than cure,” the nurse started her talk to us students. We were
in the hall to listen to a talk organised by the Counselling Club of the school. The talk was
held in conjunction with Health Week and to create better awareness among students on
how to take good care of their health.
“It has been noticed that more young people are diagnosed with diabetes and
hypertension. As students, you must have the knowledge on food that can be good and bad
for your health. You should equip yourselves with the necessary knowledge that you can
practise doing it yourself. As growing teenagers, most of you often feel hungry. It is important
that you eat healthy food that contains the required nutrition needed by your body and eat
reasonable portions to satisfy your hunger.”
I took down notes on food with good nutrition. Most of the food is either a fruit or
a vegetable. Some examples of the fruit are pineapples, oranges and all the berries. The
vegetables are carrots, cabbage, cauliflower and the green leaf vegetables. Other food that is
good for the body is the protein that can be found in eggs, fish and meat. Nuts like almonds
and pistachios or legumes such as beans are also nutritious for the body.
However, the nurse reminded us that meat especially processed meat like patty
burgers, meatballs and nuggets should be consumed sparingly. She could not deny that
fast food was not only convenient but also delicious. Pizza, doughnuts, fried chicken and
French fries were definitely favoured by the young people who might have eaten fast food
regularly. Hence, it was said to be one of the reasons for the increasing cases of obesity.
The high calories in the fast food taken will result in excessive calories that aren’t needed
by the body.
“One important advice is to be active so the extra calories can be burnt when you do
the activities. You can just walk, walk and walk, if you are not keen in doing exercises or
taking up a sport. My final advice is especially for the boys, which is to either avoid smoking
or quit smoking. It’s bad for your health. Thank you.”
As for myself, I wonder whether I can give up my weekly burger or the pizza and the
glazed doughnuts which are all my favourite food!

Questions 35 – 40
You are going to read a story about Luna.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit
each gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. For each
question, blacken the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.
The 10,000 Steps
Luna weighs 90 kilogrammes although she is only 15 years old. The doctor considered
that she is an obese case based on the calculation of her body mass index. He was worried that
Luna would get diabetes at an early age if she would not lose any weight. 35
The doctor advised Luna to start a healthy lifestyle. Besides the meal plans that the
dietician had created for her, she had to do physical exercises, too. 36 As such, the
doctor said that regular physical activity as simple as walking would help in increasing the
amount of oxygenated blood in the body which strengthens the lungs and muscles. At the same
time, endorphins released during walking could help to reduce stress level as well as improve
creativity and concentration.
37 Luna had to walk for at least 10000 steps every day which could take
hours! In order to help her, Luna downloaded an application in her phone. After a few days, she
realised that she had only been walking for no more than 5000 steps a day. She could not take
her phone to school hence the number of steps when she was at school could not be counted.
38 In addition, it was quite a hassle to have her phone with her all the time for it to
record all her movements. She then decided to get a fitness tracker.
Luna had to fight temptations and discipline herself to stick to diet plans. 39
Her best friend, Anya, kept telling her to persevere. Luna had even started to jog instead of just
walking. Her 10 000 steps were easily achieved and she added aerobics exercises into her daily
schedule.
40 The doctor was happy with Luna’s progress and hoped that she would not
stop until she reached the target weight. Then, Luna could look forward into a better, healthier
future.
A It was challenging and she had to be tough.
B She had fun and did not want to stop.
C Thus, she could not reach the target of walking 10,000 steps a day.
D However, walking did not look that simple.
E Luna had no problem in doing physical exercises.
F Luna had never done any exercises neither was she an active person.
G As she began to lose weight, Luna could feel she was fit and more energetic.
H Therefore, the doctor referred Luna to a dietician who would help her in planning her
daily meals.
