Part 2
Read a letter of complaint from a customer.
Answer questions 5 to 9 based on the letter.

Dear Sir/Madam,

1 I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service at your fast food outlet in Urban Mall on
Saturday, 30 January.

2 I usually go there to have lunch on my payday to give myself a treat after a month of hard work.
On this occasion there were only two cashiers when there should be three on duty to serve the lunch
crowd. This fast food outlet is usually very busy on a Saturday so having only two counters open is very
unwise as it causes the waiting time to be unnecessarily long. There really should be three counters open
to serve the crowd more efficiently.

3 Additionally, I noticed that the person in front of me was getting very frustrated because the cashier
told him that she did not have any change for the RM100 note he wanted to pay with. This is poor
planning on the management’s part because the supervisor should always monitor these issues so that
business runs smoothly. At that moment, I was afraid that the same thing would happen to me as I also
had a 100 ringgit note only.

4 Sure enough, I had a very unpleasant experience that day, as not only were the items that I usually
order out of stock, but when I finally paid, the cashier told me that they did not accept RM100 notes.
This caused me to burst out in anger as I was also very stressed out, having to wait in line for so long.

5 I told them that I wanted to speak to the supervisor or person-in-charge but he was nowhere to be
found. I was annoyed because I assumed that he was having his lunch but the staff later told me that he
had gone to the bank nearby.

6 If the cashier had spoken to me in a nicer manner, perhaps I would not have been so upset. However,
I found her to be very rude and unfriendly and I had the impression that she was not very well trained in
customer service. I would suggest that your company pay for proper training in order to improve your
staff ’s communication skills so that this situation does not repeat.

7 The supervisor returned just in time and apologised for the long queue. He then handed me the
correct change and I did enjoy my meal although it was not something I would usually order. I do feel
that it is important to bring this to your attention so that things can be improved. I hope you can take
steps to make sure this mistake does not happen again.

Yours faithfully,
Amelia Ling

5 Amelia sent the letter because she
A wanted to praise the staff

B He had gone for his lunch break.

Read the article.

Answer questions 10 to 14 based on the article.

1 A generation ago, the tobacco industry was berated for selling a product that is bad for one’s health—cigarettes.
Today it is the food and beverage industry and its product is sugar—sugar that is being added to food and
drinks.

2 After 20 years of working in the tobacco industry, Jane Martin, Executive Manager of the Obesity
Coalition, has launched a battle against sugar-added food and drinks. She says that the food industry has
borrowed the marketing strategy of the tobacco industry to increase sales.

3 According to her, the food industry has been very similar to the tobacco industry in how it works.
Those in the food industry fund their own research studies and criticise research that they see as harmful.
She claims that they make their products seem healthy and nutritional by promoting false advertising.

4 Added sugar, not natural sugars that exist in fruits and vegetables, is present in many food products.
One of the largest sources of added sugar is beverages, such as soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit drinks.
There are also moderate amounts of added sugar in bread, yoghurt, peanut butter, soup, sausages and so on.
Research has shown that a single tablespoon of certain brands of tomato sauce can contain a teaspoonful of
sugar.

5 Lisa Renn, a dietician, explains that having small amounts of sugar in moderation is okay. Large
amounts every day is not good. Sadly, soft drinks have become ‘the new water’. Another expert in the
medical industry, Dr Robert Lustig, who is a doctor and world leader in the anti-sugar campaign, points out
that sugar consumption worldwide has tripled in the past 50 years.

6 He states that our food supply now contains so much added sugar that our bodies can’t handle it. Fructose
is a commonly used form of added sugar. The quantity of fructose eaten today mainly gets stored as fat. For
the weight-conscious, they will not be happy to know that this fat will go to the belly.

7 The danger to health is not just from obesity. Evidence has linked sugar to liver disease, type 2 diabetes,
heart disease and tooth decay. This doesn’t stop the food and beverage industry from having extensive
advertising of its sugary products. Each year hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to promote foods
that are actually unhealthy—those high in sugar and/or fat. Besides this, the industry also invests heavily
in sponsoring sports events, cartoon character ambassadors as well as YouTube and Facebook marketing.
These are likely to reach children, thus most likely to bring in huge profits.

Read two reviews about a novel.

Answer questions 15 and 16 based on Review 1.

Review 1

1 I’ve never been to Alabama, but novelist Harper Lee made me feel as if I had been there in the long, hot
summer of 1935. Her novel tells the story of a lawyer named Atticus Finch who decided to defend an innocent
black man accused of a horrible crime. Scout, the lawyer’s daughter, remembers exactly what it was like to
be eight years old in 1935, in Maycomb, Alabama and the whole story is told from her point of view. There
were a lot more going on than just the trial, and Scout tells you all about it.

2 Scout’s voice rings so clear and true, and this is the key reason why I adore this book. Not only does
she make me see the things she sees, she makes me feel the way she feels too. Even though the story took
place many years ago, you get the idea that parts of it could happen today, in any town where people distrust
and fear each other’s differences. In a just world, an innocent man should not be found guilty.

3 There is also a strange boy called Dill. He is one of Scout’s friends but Dill isn’t really so strange once
you get to know him. He says things like ‘I’m little but I’m old’, which is funny but also pretty sad, because
some of the time Dill acts older than his seven-year-old character.

4 To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with interesting characters like Dill, and Scout makes them all seem just
as real as the people in your own hometown. Here’s how Scout describes Miss Caroline, who wore a red
striped dress: ‘She looked and smelled like a peppermint drop’. Although readers may find Dill, Boo and
Jem fascinating, the most important character in the book is still Scout’s father, Atticus Finch. It feels as
though Scout is writing the story down because she wants the world to know what a good man her dad was,
how upright and just he tried to be. And even when the deck was stacked against him, Atticus still fought
hard to do the right thing. This makes the book a fantastic read.

(Adapted from http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/bookrev/tips.htm)

15 What do we learn about the reviewer’s impression of the novel?
A He was impressed by how the writer describes each character.
B He was angered by the injustice of the law system at that time.
C He loves it because of how the story was told from a child’s perspective.

Answer questions 17 and 18 based on Review 2.

Review 2

1 To Kill a Mockingbird is about Atticus Finch, who appears as an unlikely hero and role model due to his
principles rather than his physical capabilities. The theme of good moral is clear throughout the whole
novel, especially in relation to race and the idea of committing crimes. To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on
the differences between right and wrong, and questions the law rather than just following the law. If you
take the 1930s, the time setting of the story, America was in a state of change in terms of social inequality.
The unfair treatment of women and slaves was gradually being overcome at that time.

2 Without denying the moral message, and how well the book was written, it is still open for debate whether
schoolchildren should be forced to read the novel and go over it page by page. The beauty of literature, and
the reason I love it so much, is that a writer must allow the readers to interpret the meaning of his or her
book according to their own experiences, principles and memories. Therefore, everyone who reads it can
take something different out of it. However, it seems that looking for these life lessons has become a less
and less popular exercise as the years go by. Let it not be forgotten that a true piece of literature, like To
Kill a Mockingbird, is meaningful in every period of time and that today, Atticus Finch’s message should
be heard in the midst of all the global conflicts that we hear on the news every night.

3 I can’t say whether it should be analysed, taught in schools and pulled to pieces. If it were up to me,
‘Heavens no’. Of course not, for we should be reading for the sake of simply enjoying reading. Honestly
I feel that Mockingbird is a book that should be read, be it by students or adults, without the necessity of
tearing every chapter to pieces. It’s a book to read and reread with so many layers of meaning that you can
get so much out of. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that has really changed my own life. Each time I read

Read an article about the problems of petroleum. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose
from the sentences A to G the one which fits each gap (21 to 26). There is one extra sentence which you do not
need to use.

1 To start with, we cannot go on using petroleum forever. At present, there is still plenty of petroleum under
the ground as engineers keep finding new sources of oil. There is oil under the North Sea and under the
Atlantic Ocean. We can possibly keep using oil for only a few more decades—perhaps until 2070, then it
will eventually run out. There will be none left—or at least, there will be hardly any left.

2 First and foremost, the quantity of oil under the ground and under the sea is not unlimited. It will not

last forever. As oil becomes rarer, it will become harder to find. It will also become more and more expensive

to extract. 21 .

3 Secondly, oil will always cause pollution. The by-products of burning oil include noxious gases that

are released as pollutants into the air. 22 . Currently, there is new concern about micro-plastics

and how it has penetrated everything we consume and drink. Because of oil and its by-products, we have

created a huge mess on our planet.

4 Thankfully, there is light at the end of the tunnel. 23 . In fact, most of the oil that we consume

comes from plants and it is sometimes possible to make petrol from this oil. For instance, some types of diesel-

fuel already contain sunflower oil. Sunflowers produce good quality oil too but most of this oil is needed for

cooking. Sunflower oil is cleaner than mineral oil, so it causes less pollution. 24 .

5 Looking forward, in reality, the future will have to be a future without oil—or with very little of it.

Scientists are already developing pure electric cars, negating the need for petroleum. 25 .

6 Today, electricity is produced in Britain in several different ways; some of it is produced using oil but
oil-burning power stations are already being closed. Nuclear power stations will be closed too, because they
are very expensive and the risks and hazards are plenty. Tomorrow’s electricity will be made from gas and
from other ‘renewable source’.

7 In the short-term, gas will be an important source of energy. It is cleaner than oil, and easier to extract.

There is also a lot more gas than oil under the ground. In the long-term, all our energy will come from other

renewable sources. 26 . It will be clean energy—with no pollution—and it will last forever.

However, don’t get your hopes up just yet because no one has found the formula for a reliable renewable

energy source.

8 We are on the right track but we are not there yet! In fact, it is still a long way to go. The twenty-first
century will be a century of change. People who are over 50 today are not going to see a world without oil.
Those who are under twenty may ... if they live long enough.

A In the long-term though, vegetable oils are not a good solution for the future because we may need all
the land to produce food.

B Electricity will be the energy of the third millennium.
C Plastic, another by-product, is literally choking the Earth and all its living creatures.
D Oil will therefore become more costly to produce than other fuels so we should be looking at a more

cost-effective alternative fuel.
E Renewable resources are good in theory but the operation costs are too high to be efficient.
F Scientists are hard at work making new forms of oil including fuel made from plants.
G These will come from the sun, the wind, the rivers and the oceans.

Part 6
Read an article on a type of fast-food additive.
Answer questions 27 to 33 based on the article.

1 Fast food can be considered unhealthy for many reasons, from its caloric content to the presence of
additives. However, a new study of a toxic chemical called PFAS has found that packaging that contains
the food may also be doing bodily harm to us. PFAS, or Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, refer to
a class of chemicals used in large quantities to make common household objects water or fire resistant.

2 A new study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives looked at levels of PFAS in 5
people who had fast food compared to those who ate homecooked meals. Blood samples were collected
from more than 10,000 people from 2003 to 2014 and results showed that five commonly used types of
PFAS were found in the blood of around 70 per cent of those surveyed. After a 24-hour period, the highest
amount of PFAS in the blood was found in those who ate fast food consistently. Normally, common
contaminants would pass through the human body quickly but scientists found that PFAS can linger for 10
years which is dangerous to health. However, it is unclear at what threshold PFAS begins to take a toll on
human health. Other significant studies have linked the chemical to cancer, thyroid disorders, hormonal
changes and weight gain. The fear factor is so high that Washington state and the city of San Francisco
have both passed legislation to limit the use of PFAS in food containers sold in America.

3 Based on the 2017 study conducted on 400 types of fast-food wrappers and containers, they found 15
that more than half of bread and dessert wrappers contained the fluorine compound. It would seem that
its presence is everywhere—in nearly 40 per cent of food wrappers and 20 per cent of paperboard, the
stiff containers used to hold French fries. It is prevalent because the packaging becomes water and grease
resistant when the chemical is added. This in turn makes food highly portable and more profitable. It
is those same tough properties that are a concern to those who study the effects PFAS might have on 20
the body.

4 ‘We’re still learning about health effects that may occur at different levels of exposure,’ says
study author Laurel Schaider, an environmental engineer and chemist at the Melvin Institute of Food
Technology. ‘Food is just one source of exposure,’ she says, noting that PFAS is commonly found in
paint, carpeting and clothing. ‘Everyone should make it a point to reduce their exposure although we 25
have not yet been able to statistically identify an exact rate of fast-food intake that will lead to harmful
health effects’. She cautioned against the consumption of the affected products, saying that the regular
ingestion of PFAS may have cumulative effects on human health.

5 Animal testing has shown that PFAS exposure consistently results in damage to the liver, kidneys
and the immune system. They have found tumour with some strains of PFAS indicating that it is 30
cancer-causing but there has not been enough data and research done on humans to confirm this. Thus,
Schaider says it is still uncertain how consumption of this substance, and not specifically any other
chemical, leads to cancer in humans.

6 Rolf Halden, the director of Arizona State University’s Centre for Environmental Health Engineering,
says the data from recent studies show a clear link between fast food and PFAS consumption, but he 35
worries more about the overall abundance of PFAS in consumer goods. ‘I am less interested in the
aspect of popcorn and fast food and more troubled to know that 70 per cent of the US population is
exposed to chemicals that cannot degrade and will cause long-term harm,’ he says.

7 Halden added that consumers should be very concerned about the impact PFAS has on the
environment when it is discarded. PFAS can leach into groundwater in unlined dumping grounds. A 40
recent Environmental Working Group report found that tap water going to 7.5 million Californians
tested positive for the contaminant. State governments are beginning to buck up and take action. San
Francisco, California, New York, and Rhode Island as well as Washington have each proposed restriction
on PFAS. A great milestone has been achieved with Denmark being the first country to ban it from food
packaging last month. More countries will follow suit and ban the substance in an attempt to maintain 45
food safety for all consumers.

27 In paragraph 1, the writer’s main intention is to highlight the
A presence of PFAS in fast-food packaging
B five types of PFAS found in blood samples
C rising fears of widespread distribution of this chemical
D legislations put in place since the discovery of this harmful substance

28 The writer refers to the study published in Environmental Health Perspectives to support the idea that
A PFAS stays in the blood for years causing danger to health
B PFAS causes cancer, thyroid disorders and hormonal changes
C the government should ban the use of PFAS in food packaging
D more studies need to be done on the effects of PFAS on the body

29 Which of the following is true of the 2017 study?
A PFAS was identified in more than 40% of bread and dessert packaging.
B Products with this substance can be easily distributed from port to port.
C PFAS is commonly used to improve the absorption of liquids like water and oil.
D The long-term effects of this chemical to the human body are cause for serious concern.

30 What is the word exposure being used to refer to in line 30?
A Level of PFAS in products
B Effects of PFAS on the human health
C Consumption and contact with products containing PFAS
D Certain food, paint and clothing products that contain PFAS

31 The conclusion of the lab studies in paragraph 5 is that
A animal testing of this toxin is ongoing
B there is evidence of organ damage in animals caused by PFAS
C it is still inconclusive how PFAS causes cancer in the human body
D tumours in the rats and mice confirm that PFAS does cause cancer

32 Why is Rolf Halden not very interested in the presence of PFAS in fast food?
A It is an inevitable move to enhance profit.
B 70% of Americans are already exposed to it.
C PFAS is found in many other consumer goods.
D These chemicals cannot break down in the long-term.

Part 7
Read an article on Alzheimer’s disease.
Answer questions 34 to 40 based on the article.

Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
1 The sixth leading cause of death in America, according to the Centre for Disease Control, is Alzheimer’s. 5
A shocking 1 in 3 seniors die with some form of dementia and the disease kills more people than
prostate and breast cancer combined. With the ageing of baby boomers, the number of Americans aged
65 and older with Alzheimer’s is expected to rise dramatically to over 13.8 million by 2050, with some
estimates reaching as high as 16 million.

2 The human cost is incalculable but the cost to the healthcare system is not. This year, Alzheimer’s
is projected to cost the American people a staggering $290 billion, with Medicare and Medicaid picking
up nearly 70 per cent of the tab. By 2050, that number will rise to $1.1 trillion. What is even more
depressing about this is that all this medical cost does nothing to reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s.

3 Lucy Comer, a bestselling author, describes the impact of this disease in her book Slow Dancing 10
With a Stranger: Lost and Found in the Age of Alzheimer’s. She focuses on the effects the disease has
on individuals and the havoc it wreaks on the lives of patients, their caregivers and society. She gives
personal accounts about her husband who is suffering from Alzheimer’s: ‘I couldn’t help but scream
at him last night for the first time. Then I felt so guilty because it’s not his fault; it is the disease that is
my enemy. I feel like I am a prisoner suffering too. I promise I will never scream at him again. ... his 15
disease is keeping me imprisoned and hopeless. I feel compelled to speak out for victims who have no
voice, and caregivers who feel worn out’.

4 Harvey Nick, Comer’s husband—an accomplished doctor—degenerated before her eyes after he
was diagnosed at 58. He became upset when dementia caused him to make mistakes and the slightest
thing set him off. For example, if he couldn’t find his things, he accused her of taking them. Despite 20
being an eloquent speaker before, he talked about a dead cousin while giving a speech at their son’s
wedding. When Comer mentioned this to her husband, he erupted in anger. She ended up walking on
eggshells around him and this frustrated him even more. The episodes ended with him storming off. Her
anger turned to empathy in 1995, when she finally understood the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

5 This begs the question as to why so little is written about the horror stories associated with 25
Alzheimer’s. It may be because of the nature of the disease itself. People simply do not want to hear the
dark tales associated with this disease. Sometimes, in their confusion, the patients can become violent.
Comer noted that unprovoked and out of his mind, Harvey had tried more than once to choke her from
behind. During an early stay in a psychiatric hospital, while she was bathing him, he dragged her off
and punched her so hard that her mouth gushed blood. Those experiences were part of the reality of 30
Alzheimer’s for her and other caretakers faced similar acts of violence. To make matters worse, there
is no magic cure or a miracle drug for treating Alzheimer’s. It is a long and slow death sentence for
patients and a dark journey for everyone around them.

6 Not all news about Alzheimer’s is doom and gloom, however. The World Health Organisation
released its latest risk reduction guidelines for Alzheimer’s last week, noting that lifestyle changes can 35
delay or reduce the incidence of the disease. Those include regular physical activity, eating a balanced
diet, managing weight and blood pressure, not smoking and not drinking in excess.

7 WHO Director-General Dr Ted Adhan confirmed this in a statement: ‘The scientific evidence
gathered for these guidelines confirms what we have suspected for some time. What is good for our
heart is also good for our brain. What we need is globally committing to leading the way right now 40
with public health campaigns that work. Dementia hits at random and affects everyone. We should all
take action, knowing that we can reduce our risks now by just leading a healthier lifestyle.’ He cited
how lifestyle choices can influence up to 30 per cent of Alzheimer’s disease cases. This means more
exercise, better food choices, having a network of friends to do things with and feeling more purposeful.

8 Without a doubt, healthier living and better lifestyle choices will slow the relentless march of 45
Alzheimer’s. That’s good news everyone should be spreading, not just for Alzheimer’s but for many
other diseases.
