Practice 3 PART 3: Information Transfer READING The New Kid in My Neighbourhood There was quite a commotion outside our house. I took a peek and saw several moving trucks stopped at the house next door. Ever since Mr Ranjit and his family migrated to Australia six months ago, the house has been empty. I missed having Sandeep around. She would always drop by the house and we would have so much fun hanging out. She did promise to return for a visit. I stay glued by the window and watched the scene unfold as every moving crew carrying boxes of all shapes and sizes out of the truck and into Sandeep’s former home. It took them quite a while to bring everything into the house. As the moving team continued to unload items, a black MPV pulled to a stop across the street. The car’s doors opened and a cheerful family of four stepped out. There was a dad, a mum, an older boy and a younger girl. I, instinctively, knew that they were the new home owners and my new neighbours. I quickly made my way out and introduced myself to them. The older boy is Liam. His height is pretty intimidating for a 12-year-old, and we will be classmates too! That same evening, I took Liam to a nearby park and we played basketball. Liam was part of his old school basketball team and he hopes to play for our school too. We both share a passion for books. This has sparked interesting conversations between us about our favourite stories and characters. His enthusiasm for learning is truly inspiring. We also explore new interests together, from science experiments to art projects. I can tell it is going to be an amazing year for our school assignments!

© Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. 34 MODEL QUESTION AND ANSWER Part 4 Read the article and answer questions that follow. Choose no more than five words and/or a number from the text for each answer. In the Name of Sui Ling Sui Ling stares at the blank page for the longest of time. Shoulders slump and she sighs, “Hate this word”. The word ‘NAME’ never fails to stop her in her track. All she has to do is write her name down. It’s that simple, really, but not to Sui Ling. It’s a struggle. What’s in a name one might ask, eh? It’s plenty in a name. Sui Ling takes the application form for opening a new bank account and finds an empty chair to sit, away from prying eyes. She keeps tapping the black pen on that particular blank. The word ‘name’ in any given form or shape of any documents, irks her. She remembers a time during a family gathering at her paternal grandma’s home. Her aunts and grandaunts all would be calling her name out from the kitchen, “Sui Ling! Sui Ling!” It dawns on her that her name just doesn’t suit her personality. Once she asked her mum who in the family had the ‘honour’ of naming her? “It was your Ama.” If only mummy could see Sui Ling rolling her eyes. Why did her grandma give her that name? She’s in no rush. Her eyes dart to the digital clock on the wall blinking 2.30 p.m. She has plenty of time. No appointment, not hanging out with her friends today. She writes her full name pretending that it’s not her name, as if she’s helping another lady filling up the form. Then she waited for her turn; number 1120, three clients ahead of her. She sits and checks her Instagram, an activity that can miraculously make one forget time. She scrolls reel after reel. Lately she’s been into watching those how-to-hack reels on renovating the bedroom. I can do this. It’s manageable. How hard can it be? Who needs muscles to do this? Then her train of thoughts is interrupted by a squeal. “Sui Ling?” She hears it twice. If someone calls her by that name, it must be someone from her village. Urgh. She lets out an extremely quiet sigh which is only known to her and her soul. Look up, smile and be polite. “Hey, you!” “Oh my gosh! It’s really you!” Katie wraps her strong arms around Sui Ling. Sui Ling has to force a smile but Katie is just too excited to notice the unnatural smile. Tips and Techniques 1. Read the title and text thoroughly to get an idea of what it is all about. 2. Read the questions. Scan the text to locate specific information and look for keywords to help you answer the questions. 3. Your answer should be no more than five words and/or a number from the text for each answer. 4. For questions 33 and 34, scan the text to find the word which best represents the meanings given. Read the sentence before and after that particular word to help you get some clues. 5. Give complete, detailed and specific answers. Check that your answers are grammatically correct. When they first moved in a few years back, there was no flash flood when it rained heavily. However, recently, the neighbourhood always would have flash floods during heavy rains. One day, Intan walked around the neighbourhood and realised that all the drains were clogged. Some irresponsible people had thrown rubbish into the drains. That night, Intan told her family about the clogged drains. Intan’s father decided to raise this issue at the upcoming residents’ association meeting scheduled for that weekend. During the meeting, he brought up the matter and all residents agreed that they should clean the drains. They decided to organise a gotong royong for the neighbourhood the following weekend. Posters were displayed throughout the neighbourhood to promote the gotong royong. Nearly all the residents signed up to participate in the event. On the day of the gotong royong, the residents gathered at the neighbourhood field around eight in the morning. They had brought along rubbish bags, gloves, waste collection baskets, hoes, shovels, rakes and other cleaning tools. Once everyone had arrived, the president of the residents association, Encik Kamal, gave them their duties. Apart from cleaning the drains, they also decided to pluck the weeds at the field and playground, sweep up the rubbish at the streets, plant flowers around the neighbourhood and other clean-up activities. Soon everyone got to work. Around one in the afternoon, they stopped to have lunch. It was sponsored by a resident and his family, the Lim family. After lunch, they continued their work. They only stopped work at about 5.00 p.m. The residents were exhausted but happy that their neighbourhood looked clean and beautiful. A few days later, it rained heavily, however this time, there was no flash flood. Intan and her neighbours were glad.

English Form 3 Part 5 Matching (Gapped Text) © Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. 48 PRACTICE 1 Read the newspaper article below. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (1 – 6). The Reasons for Private Tuition Parents deem private tuition necessary for their children. They want to provide their children with the best possible education. (1) Even if it comes at a high cost, they want to ensure that their children are able to achieve good grades. Parents feel that private tuition provides the extra push needed because school teachers have too many classes, too many students in one class and too little time for individual attention. (2) (3) Parents think private tuition would help them to catch up with the lessons that they struggle with. Private tuition can customise the lessons and activities for their children according to what is required by the child. Another necessity gained from private tuition is the amount of time and attention a student will receive from a teacher. As private tuition is usually on a one-to-one basis, a tuition teacher can fully focus on a student. (4) With less distractions, the tuition teacher is able to understand and work on a student’s weak points. At school, students don’t have many choices from their teachers. Having a tuition teacher will grant students an educator who’s able to cater to their learning styles. (5) With busy schedules and timetables, it becomes difficult for parents to help their struggling children with their homework and exam preparations. (6) Tuition teachers help students to be wellprepared for their exams with relevant techniques and more practice. A The tuition teacher can devote more attention to the student for the entire duration of the lesson. B It is important to engage with students learning styles when teaching them. C In this situation, the best thing that a parent can do is hire a private tutor. D Thus, individual attention is almost impossible in schools. E Therefore, the smaller the group, the more that each student will benefit. F Many parents do not mind spending hundreds of ringgit on tuition classes in a month. G Students who are weak in certain subjects might need extra coaching. H This enables students to learn all the positive aspects. [6 marks]

Malaysia’s Powerlifting Star Born on June 3, 1999, in Betong, Sarawak, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin is a remarkable Malaysian powerlifter. He is the son of a Bidayuh father, Gustin Jenang, and an Iban mother, Evylen Gelagar. Despite the challenges posed by his spina bifida condition, which affects his mobility, he has not allowed it to hinder his success. He was introduced to powerlifting at a very young age, often accompanying his father, Gustin, during training sessions. His interest in powerlifting was sparked after watching his father, a former national para-athlete, compete in the sport from 2000 to 2017. Inspired by his father’s success, Bonnie began participating in powerlifting at the age of 15. Additionally, his older brother, Bryan Junancey Gustin, also competed in international powerlifting events, further motivating Bonnie to follow in their footsteps. He began training under Coach Jamil Adam and quickly ascended through the ranks, winning both national and international competitions. His dedication paid off when he finished fourth in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in his category. He served as the nation’s flag bearer at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and went on to set a new record by lifting 228kg in the men’s 72kg category, securing Malaysia’s first-ever gold medal in powerlifting. He continued to excel by winning a gold medal at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Georgia and subsequently set a world record of 230kg in Dubai. At the recent 2024 Paris Paralympics, he once again represented Malaysia with pride. Bonnie broke the record again by lifting 232kg, establishing a new world record in the men’s 72kg category and securing his second gold medal. Bonnie frequently shares words of inspiration, encouraging others to “never give up” and to “believe in themselves.” He believes that challenges are merely opportunities for growth. His journey inspires many, demonstrating that determination and hard work can lead to greatness, regardless of the obstacles faced.

Coldplay’s Green Journey in Malaysia The British rock band, Coldplay, consisting of four talented members with Chris Martin as the lead singer, has captivated audiences worldwide with their iconic songs such as “Yellow”, a heartfelt ballad and the chart-topping “Fix You”. Lately, the band has been making headlines not only in the music industry but also for their positive impact on the environment. The band has consistently advocated for environmental sustainability and is well-known for their green initiative. In recent years, Coldplay has partnered with The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit organisation dedicated to removing plastic waste from waterways in Malaysia and Indonesia. According to research conducted by The Ocean Cleanup, the Klang River ranks among the world’s top 50 most polluted rivers, primarily due to improper sewage treatment, industrial waste, residential discharge and soil erosion. The band has taken action against plastic pollution in the rivers of Malaysia by sponsoring a specialised boat called the ‘Interceptor’ to collect plastic before it reaches the ocean. This innovative vessel is valued at approximately RM3.2 million. Since its deployment in December 2021, the Interceptor has successfully collected around 75 metric tonnes of waste. This project aims not only to clean up the rivers but also to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the planet. Coldplay is truly walking the talk, as the band has produced vinyl records using recycled plastics collected from the Klang River. These records consist of 70% plastic sourced from the river and 30% from other recycled waste materials. Each vinyl record is made from approximately nine plastic bottles. This clearly demonstrates that a substantial portion of waste can be repurposed, thereby mitigating environmental impact. This innovative approach underscores how art can contribute to solving environmental issues. The band’s commitment inspires fans and communities to take action and consider their ecological footprint. Their efforts remind us that even minor actions can lead to significant positive change.
